This book is quickly becoming my "bible." Over the years, I went from a person without a weight problem to an obese person who often ate unconsciously, on autopilot, for emotional reasons, you name it. I've been on several diets as well, losing all the weight I wanted, only to regain all or most of it. Then I learned that the only thing diets ever really did for me was make me obsess about food.
I am already putting the principles into practice and feel empowered for the first time in a long time. It may be a long process for me to learn to eat in response to hunger, without judgment of myself, without silly, illogical rules, and most of all, with acceptance and peace with food and eating. I recommend this book highly. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-03 09:01:52 EST)

Anyone who has ever struggled with dieting or has ever had trouble controlling the amount of food they eat or has ever suffered from an eating disorder must have this book. It is a life saver.
You will learn how to have a positive, healthy relationship with food again. You will stop binging, emotional eating and eating out of control. You will find that after reading this book, you will never need to diet again because you will be so in tune with your body that you will only eat the type and amount of food that it needs. Your body will naturally return to the weight it was meant to be... permanently. This book is the end of restricting food, starvation, binging, guilt and fluctuating weight. I am a psychologist who has struggled with a binge eating disorder for years. I am now able to truely eat what I want, when I want without gaining weight or over eating. I will be using this program to treat patients who struggle with food. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-26 07:50:25 EST)

While this book has some good information in it and is a good place for people with eating issues or weight problems, I agree with the reviewer who said that the book's theory does not account for our modern diet full of sugar and poor-quality foods. For many people, eating sugar or certain fatty or salty foods will trigger chemical reactions that biologically make you want to eat more and more. This makes the "eat whatever you want when you are hungry, stop when full" almost impossible for some people. After trying to follow this and gaining some weight (which the book says can happen before your body "normalizes") I woke up and realized that sugar and processed foods were not healthy for my body and doing me no good health-wise or weight-wise, so it was time to stop eating them as much as I possibly can. It is important to follow your natural hunger and fullness issues, but it is also important to follow a healthy diet and not just allow yourself to eat anything you want at all meals. Do you let your kids eat all the sugar they want? Of course not. So, I don't think it's wise to let yourself do the same. Being or feeling "deprived" (which they say diets make you feel) is not about eating healthfully, it's about depriving yourself of a healthy body and life. The book says that you will naturally start wanting a healthy diet when you are allowed to eat what you want, but chemically, I don't think this is the case with certain people. It's worth reading, but I liked The Slow Down Diet better, and I'm also reading Shrink Yourself, a book written by a psychologist for emotional eaters.

This was well worth my money! After reading the first chapter I began to make changes. It all makes sense. The best part, after years of dieting and regaining the weight, I am losing weight without any effort. I no longer see food as the enemy. I'm grateful to have been introduced to this book and love the effect it had on me. I will certainly recommend it to others.

I give five stars to this book for a few reasons. First, being a young adult involved in the fashion industry, it is not easy to find answers out there that make sense. Of all the literature I have read on nutrition, dieting, and weight control, I feel this one is well rounded. There are no severe restrictions, no two week diet plans, and no extreme measures with results that do not last. I would feel comfortable recommending this to a younger crowd- teenaged group, or to an older more experienced crowd.
Pressure from outside sources are enough stress- we do not need to add the additional pressure form oursleves. One of the most important facts about this book was that it showed me what is right for myself may not be right for other people, and that is okay. Being true to yourself is one of the best ways to feel better, regardless of judgement and criticism. After years of struggling with body image and disordered eating, I am starting to feel better. I have been practicing intuitive eating for 4 months now, and through the stress of graduating college, I feel pretty good! I realize that eating, as in what you eat, how you feel (or don't) when you eat, and how you eat, all reflect a deeper look into yourself. In this healing process, I finally realize it is no longer about losing weight. The point is to feel better, happier, and have more esteem for yourself and your body. I can say that I enjoy ice cream to the max now! By removing the deprivation and guilt, we release the need to stuff our faces (and our emotions). Thank you. I'm a registered dietitian, so I'm quite particular about books I read about nutrition. However, this one is by far the best one geared towards weight loss, or eating disorders. Written by two registered dietitians (RD), not some doctor that maybe had just one nutrition class in his/her life, this book outlines the common diet traps numerous people unfortunately fall into. It provides common sense tips on how to avoid these diet traps & how to follow one's intuition and hunger cues to aid people who are having a hard time losing weight or those who disordered eating or eating disorders. The authors provide numerous examples and resources as well. I highly recommend it to anyone in the nutrition/fitness field.

I have read countless diet and health books over the years, this book proves that we have been brainwashed by an industry which doesn't have our best interest at heart and as a result we have lost our faith in our body's intuition. I am half way through this book and have already ditched my New Year's resolution to lose weight by the summer. Instead I am eating 3 meals and 2 snacks a day (including a bar of chocolate NOT three!). I ask myself if I am hungry and what I feel like eating and am trying to overcome the guilt that has been plaguing me for years causing a non stop cycle of diet/binge. I have a feeling I will be referring back to this book until my mind is cleansed of the media's bullying and am at peace with what my body is trying to tell me.

I'm in the middle of the book. It's a realistic view of food, why we eat, why we eat what we eat, and so on. I chose this book because I've been "dieting" off and on most of my life. I was ready to learn to not follow a strict diet, but to learn what to eat and why I'm eating it. I wanted control again - control to choose and do the right thing. I believe this book is getting me there!

This book was great!! I found it both helpful and comforting especially with my issues with food. For those of us with an eating disorder or without it is a definite must read. Everyone can benefit from this book. It can be so freeing and motivational. It really gave me hope that I can get over my issues with food, and I felt like the authors pinned things so well as I see them in my head. Soooo worth the money!!

I have gone through ever diet you could ever possibly image. Although some of them did work for a while, I could never really stay on them. After reading this book, I will never diet again. I now realize that eating when your hungry, and not eating when your not hungry is the ultimate way to train your body. I don't worry every time I get hungry now, I sit and think about what I would like to eat and then eat it. I haven't lost a significant amount of weight, but I have lost some and will continue to lose until I am at the natural weight I am supposed to be at. I feel great and enjoy being able to eat out with my friends and having the willpower to set the fork down when I am full. I suggest this book to everyone.

In the past, I never really cared about my diet. I ate what I want, and when I wanted. I never really gained or lost a lot of weight, but suddenly one day, I decided to get a gym membership to begin getting back in shape. I did well. I paid attention to my diet, and my exercise. Never before in my life had I been able to swim a mile, or run a mile for that matter. I felt better than ever. I lost quite a lot of weight, bought new sets of clothes, and life was good, or so I thought.
Little did I know, my world suddenly came down. I was hit with a major eating disorder. I was never into any particular diet. My rule was simple: eat natural food that you can think of in the wild, and any processed food is bad for you. I thought this concept was a very healthy concept. I wrote down all my calories per day in a journal, and at any point and time I had a craving, I would suppress it by exercise, drinking water, or punishing myself by eating fruits or veggies instead. However, about 7 months of this, I suddenly came into constant concern with food. One day, I spent nearly 1 and a half hour at a super market picking things up, reading the calories and fat contents, putting it back, picking it up wishing I could eat it, then not being able to eat it. Never before in my life, I had weird cravings: I wanted fried food (I never really liked fried food even before I started a diet), I wanted pop-tarts (again, I never really eaten pop-tarts before my diet), I wanted things like oeros, cupcakes, and many other things. I wondered to myself why did I want these things. I started to not enjoy myself with things I loved to do, exercise became a chore and I wasn't enjoying it because I figured I wasn't burning enough calories, and I started to go on binges. I would eat a whole box of "bad" things, and when I blew it, I figured, "Oh well, might as well eat everything else I can't eat, and tomorrow, I will restart." This started happening for about 3-4 weeks, when I started researching it deeply. I thought at first it was a major depression, so I read over depressions. I thought it was an eating disorder, and I read it over and I had some of the symptoms, but it didn't quite feel like a major eating disorder yet, as it's been only several weeks. Then, I asked around forums, and other places, when I realized it was because of my diet. I was too preoccupied with my diet, and therefore, it was my enemy. This book was recommended to me by a forum member. The first things I did were throw out my calories counter book, and I started reading this book. After reading halfway through and thinking over the concepts, I felt better about myself. I went out and bought all my "bad" food, and to my amazement, I didn't eat the whole box. I just ate one or two, and I didn't think about it all day long. I started enjoying my exercises, and I didn't constantly worry about calories, or fat grams. I just ate a bit here and there, and enjoyed it. I'm still reading over the book, and I'm finding it superb. It seems like the book is mainly geared towards women (I'm a guy), but I think this book can help anyone. I say if you have a eating disorder, or if you've been dieting and now you want to maintain but you're constantly worried about food or cravings, or if you just dieted and failed over and over again, I recommend this book. Hopefully I can keep the weight off, and I'm wishing that my relationship with food can be restored. Just less than a week of following this book put my mind at ease. I have seen so many books on dieting! Each month or so a new title pops up claiming to have the ULTIMATE SOLUTION to our nation's overeating problem. That's right folks, in most cases this is just that - OVEREATING. In most cases we do not need any diet; all we need is to stop overeating - the constant snaking, and chewing usually accompanied with drinking pops. How about drinking just clear mineral water instead? Just by making this simple adjustment many of us would shed a considerable amount of pounds. As the authors of Intuitive Eating rightly point out, there is no ultimate diet that fits everyone. Each one of us is unique, we grow up in different environments, we are all differently "wired" and we have different needs. The problem with Intuitive Eating is that most of the foods that we find in our grocery stores is not natural food any more; it often has so many added ingredients that cheat the wisdom of our bodies. Most of us can probably name one or two snack that we are just not able to stop eating. In my case it is potato chips. Whenever I start eating them, I cannot stop until I eat all of them. Why is that? - I don't know. According to Kevin Trudeau, the author of the book Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About, the food industry purposely adds some ingredients to "hook us up" with their products, to make us addicted to some foods. Whether this is true or not, it is very likely that our wise bodies will not intuitively know when to stop eating modified, unnatural foods. The way I deal with my problem is simple - I just don't buy any potato chips any more. It is only right to follow the well known advice that can be found in any GOON NUTRITION books (do not confuse that with dieting books):
- eating in small portions, not overindulging - eating only fresh ingredients, drinking a lot of water - eating a lot of vegetables and fruits - eating slowly, well chewing each byte - eating all kind of foods, not following any fad diets - changing your diet according to the season - exercising The above well known truths can be found in many sources. In addition, in the book "Can We Live 150" you will find the following bad habits that lead people to obesity: - The habit of eating fast and not chewing the food well - Frequent snacking or constant chewing - Incorrect combining of food products - Lying down after meals - Sitting lifestyle - Eating while watching TV - Eating while irritated - Eating before bedtime or at night - Eating mostly refined and cooked food products. Intuitive eating is a good idea, but in the modified foods environment it needs to be supported by additional knowledge of proper food combination etc. Books by Tombak ("Can We Live 150", "Cure the Incurable") and some other authors will well fill the void. This book is changing my life. I have to say... its not a quick fix. Not at all. I've been following their advice for months now. Its changing my head and my train of thought... my body has yet to catch up. It is a great book for anyone suffering from an eating disorder, or if they're simple obsessed with food. After years of Weight Watchers, I couldn't even think straight about what I wanted to eat for dinner. This book is putting me back on the right track. Its an easy read and it has a quick reference section. I am constantly re-reading it for more ideas and support.

The authors took a different approach to the issues of eating. The authors clearly state that their book may not work for everyone, especially those who have an established eating disorders and who may need professional assistance to solve their eating disorder issues. This doesn't mean you're weak.
I read this book back in January after I picked it up while waltzing through a bookstore. The major take away I got from the book was how dissatified I was with what I ate and why I was eating it. I was substituting foods that were okay tasting or were okay as far as pleasure goes for ones I really wanted. Sometimes I just want some candy or french fries. This doesn't mean I eat it all the time. At first I did after reading the book. I don't know if I gained weight once I tried it or not. One night a couple of months after I had finished reading the book, I found myself eating my dinner and not wanting any more of it. I find that I am paying attention to when I'm full and I sometimes eat past that point by my choice. My weight is going down (I did step on the scale a month ago and almost freaked out that I would not be able to sleep through the night). I find that I'm happier with my food choices. I tend to eat decently and I add the fun foods when I really want them. And I do eat them. And I don't feel guilty. For the diet nuts, I was a size 18 when I finished reading the book in January and I am now a size 14. I've not exercised, aside from walking my dog. I've just eaten intuitively. I struggled desperately on Weight Watchers last fall (before reading this book) with counting points and working out 2x a day to lose 10 pounds in 3 months - I was miserable and I felt so guilty eating my points I was entitled. It's not Weight Watchers fault. It is a program which does teach moderation and eating what you enjoy. It just didn't address the real issue for me - dissatisfaction with food. How else have I been impacted? For 18 years, I rarely slept through the entire night. I would wake up and eat - dissatisfaction again because the things I would eat when I woke were the things I would hide (chocolate chips, pop tarts, candy)because I was not supposed to eat them. This has had a major impact on me as I sleep through the night most every night (maybe one or two nights a month I now wake up) when before I would sleep through the night maybe 4-5 nights a month. For me, the biggest message I gleaned from the book is gaining satisfaction from what I eat. If you have an ingrained eating disorder, you may actually need professional help that a book like this cannot provide. Seek help if you require it. This book could be a good first step towards improving your life. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-22 00:59:36 EST)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever struggled with food, weight, and dieting. While I found one chapter on their suggested nutritional guidelines a bit antiquated, the basic tenets of their philosophy are so universally, intuitively true. It is a common sense approach to food and life that will teach you to look within for answers. Absolutely refreshing!

If you actually learn to trust your body and listen to your body, it can do wonders for your self esteem and outlook on everything. This book helped me get out of the mind set of the eating disordered, and taught me to trust myself. My body knows what it wants and what it needs. Some days I'm hungier than others, and some days I eat fattier foods than the next day. That's all okay because it all balances out in the end, and my body is getting what it wants and needs. The book made reference to young children and how they know when to eat and when not to, what to eat and what not to. They know how to listen to their bodies, and this book helped me learn to listen to mine as well. We are all different shapes and sizes, and we don't have to fit the ideal standard that our world has set out for us - we aren't all size zeros who eat low fat foods every day and avoid cake and cookies like they are poison. Trust yourself. Read this book and learn that food doesn't have to consume every thought that goes through your head.

This book (and many others on this subject) makes a lot of sense. Eat when you're hungry. Stop when you're satisfied. I agree with this in theory. In my many attempts to follow this, I found that I was only truly hungry about twice a day.
However, the problem is that complete intuitive eating is somewhat unrealistic in American society. For example, I found that I was never really hungry until around 11:00 a.m. Okay, so I'd eat. Then, I'd be really hungry at about 4. So, I'd eat. But that meant that I wouldn't be hungry for dinner. So, what am I supposed to say to my spouse---"Sorry, but I can't eat dinner with you because I'm not hungry. I'll just sit here at the dinner table and watch you eat while I sip some water." It's unrealistic to put all social situations involving food aside. Additionally, this book made me realize something: I don't want to relegate food to just necessity. I mean, food is one of the pleasures of life. Should I forego that once-in-a-blue moon dessert at a fancy restaurant because I'm not hungry? I agree that our society does FAR too much social eating and eating for a million reasons other than hunger. That's one extreme. The other extreme is intuitive eating. There has to be some sort of balance between eating only for hunger and eating only for pleasure. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-06 20:48:48 EST)

If you want to stop dieting and live your life by treating food like fuel, with no emotional attachments, this may be the program for you. I know people who swear by this program and for them this book seems to be the gateway to how to achieve that new life. For me, this book was not the be all and end all that I had hoped. I think if you follow the instructions to the letter of the law, it may very well work. I guess I don't have the patience for that. It's good reading, just not necessarily a life changing reading for all.

After coping with compulsive eating and recently dieting and binge eating, I was desperate to break free from my obsession with food and my body. This book has opened my eyes and set me on a new course.
Intuitive Eating is a revolutionary concept, even though it is basically the most normal, natural way to eat -- the way a child deals with food! The authors have started a movement that has been gaining momentum and is becoming more and more popular in the midst of all the diet mentality our society shoves down our throats. This book is for anyone struggling with eating and food issues: anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, compulsive dieting and exercising. It's for people who can't stop weighing themselves and are constantly criticizing themselves because of some perceived flaw on their bodies. The authors instruct us to toss out these irrational, destructive beliefs we have about dieting, exercise, food and our bodies and learn instead to honor and respect our bodies. Their research and case studies are convincing and inspiring, and their clearly explained principles are easy to understand. This book has changed my life. I recommend it to anyone who is tired of feeling like a failure because they can't stay on a diet, even though it's the diet industry that is failing us. This book has given me hope that I can become a healthier, happier person. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-01 19:45:23 EST)

I must admit I have not read this book, but used to work at Beyond Hunger a non profit and one of the first people who taught this intuitive eating concept. Read "It's Not About Food" to further your understanding about this way of eating and ending the diet binge cycle.
In my experience of using this concept in ending your food/weight battle,I was elated and excited to learn that I could stop dieting and throw out my scale. I was in my late 20's then and had been hospitalized for bulimia a few years before but still had trouble with binging, even though I did not purge anymore. I had a lot of support to remind me to eat what I wanted and stop when full. I had alot of support in accepting my body not being model thin anymore. I never lost any weight, but I did not balloon up either. My weight stabilized at about 135 (I am 5'4) my obesession with food and weight was way less. Most importantly, I was able to deal with my real issues, the ones I was running from by being obsessed with being the perfect weight. I had to realize that some people are not meant to be thin. That does not mean they are not healthy. I am talking emotional, mental and spiritual health as well as physcal. If we are honest with ourselves, we can find our right weight and it may not look good by the cultural standard but it feels right to our body. It is up to us to affirm our own beauty and get support for it. We need to stop judging people for their or our size. No one likes to hear this but it is true. What is the big deal if someone is fat or bigger? It may not be convenient on an airplane, but don't you think fat people feel bad enough with our and the medias constant reminding them that they are wrong for their size? Next time you judge someone for being bigger than you think they should be, remember this is a human being with a heart and soul and feelings just like you. You are not perfect either. You have your own food issues most likely, but because you have it "under control" you are better than them? So I was saying that then I gradually lost the support for accepting my body as I got older and my middle started expanding, which is natural with age and I became unhappy with my body again. Not having the support to deal with my changing aging body was not good. Also, I became increasingly senstive to gluten, and dairy products. So, just last year I went on a diet without gluten, sugar and dairy. I lost the weight but have since been back on the diet/binge cycle and the obsession with my body.I had myself in a cage with food again, and I had to break out.I am learning how to deal with this food sensitivity issue and my feelings of deprivation around it. It is not easy to find the balance here.If I just say "you can't have that food anymore", I rebel" When I say "go ahead and have it" I feel sick. See, it is not so clear cut and dry here. Some would say it is. But, we are dealing with the psyche here and all it's mystery. When people say there is a magic answer to this problem, I now feel mistrustful, I think the answer is being open to what this issue can teach me about me. It is bigger than food or weight and for some who don't want to deal with that mystery, a diet is their answer and always will be. So, I have concluded that if I do this "Intuitive Eating" plan that I need to have support to accept myself and my weight just as I am and deal with my bodies physical and my emotional changing needs in a healthy, gentle way. I need to accept that I will not be perfect, that I will have good days and not so good days.Without support of a healthy perspective on this issue, I am supported to get back on this hellish diet, guilty, obsessive, waste of time and life energy roller coaster that our culture and media espouse and sell me on a daily basis. I read Intuitive eating and thought it made complete sense. I threw out my scale, all my dieting books, and decided to learn to "listen" to my body. I ate when I was hungry, what I wanted, and stopped when I was satisfied. After 2 weeks I had gained 10 pounds. After a month, 15 pounds. I'm now in the slow, painful process of eating a sensible, low fat, portion controlled diet and exercising to take off that extra weight I gained thanks to the Intuitive Eating philosophy. Buyer beware.

I am in the middle of reading Intuitive Eating right now and already my thoughts about food and bingeing have changed. I have alot of food allergies and food restrictions and have found myself in the past year going through vicious cycles of bingeing on foods that I have determined are "bad" foods and ones I should stay away from alltogether or limit myself from having atleast once a week and therefor it turned into a pattern of not only bingeing on these foods but also purgeing and I never thought I'd be rid of all my obsessive thoughts about food or weight until I found this book and for once I truly feel like I can change my thinking and change my life for the better.

This is an excellent book. I have struggled with dieting all my life, and finally I have found an approach that makes sense and actually works. Buy this book; you won't regret it! Because drinking diet cola was a daily ritual my friend gave me a copy of a book called the T_r_u_t_h about C_a_f_f_e_i_n_e. I read that those who drink cola may experience a decrease in bone density -- a precursor to osteoporosis, it made me think twice. Carbonated sodas -- especially colas -- are highly acidic. There is a whole lot more in this book and I highly recommended it.

when i had just gone on my first diet when i was 15, i lost weight and exercised and looked great. but that was when i developed my first unhealthy relationship with food. in spite of how thin i was, i started not being able to stop at 1 brownie at school, i had to eat 8. i felt very guilty about it but as long as i exercised i stayed 5 pounds away from a slim weight. then i went to a semester away at boarding school. i was so depressed at leaving that i stopped exercising and kept up my unhealthy binging habits at McD's and school- in a month i gained 25 pounds. Which made me even more depressed. I even left the boarding school i was to attend for a semester after one week because of depression and a low body image. However i made a commitment to get back in shape when i got back home. However, i didn't know how to stop my binge eating and the exercise wasn't working like it had the first time and i could see i was set to gain even more weight. Which is when i went to the library and scoured the weight loss books section and found "intuitive eating". it made so much sense and it was just what i needed. in a matter of 2 months without exercising and eating whatever i craved, i lost 20 pounds. This was a runaway success for me. i continued to maintain that weight loss although i was still 20 pounds over my lowest healthy weight for my height, i was right in the middle of the healthy weight range for my height. over the years i still tried to lose the extra 20 pounds but i kept falling back to intuitive eating. An example of what this book does is i always LOVED haagen daaz butter pecan ice cream and when i first started using the principles in this book i would eat a pint of that ice cream a day. I ate it so much now i don't even like the taste of it anymore! you lose your craving for comfort foods with this diet. However, i think i still overate, so while it worked it it didn't work all the way. so, i can understand those people who gained weight with this book. nothing works right for everyone. everyone is different. and it didn't work completely for me either.
another issue came up for me years later too. i started taking antipsychotic medication because i developed schizophrenia. to make a long story short, eating intuitively the same amount i usually ate i gained 85 pounds. So, i had to learn other eating behaviors besides what this book has to offer to lose the weight. currently i'm holding at 65 pound weight loss. i still need to lose the last 20 pounds i gained and 20 extra pounds so 40 all together. some things i learned that's not in this book. What you eat really does matter. i think it's good to start off with this book and to also study what are healthy foods so you know what foods to eat when you lose your cravings for unhealthy food- so you know what foods would be a good replacement. I'm a big believer in raw foods. and although most people think of simple raw fruits and vegetables , raw food can mean anything uncooked so that could mean a raw chocolate or pumpkin pie- raw food is limitless. A important secret i learned about food is that the saying that "calories are the same for every food" or some such thing is wrong. You can eat the same calories in healthy raw food and cooked food- healthy or unhealthy and you'll lose weight eating the raw food and you might gain weight eating the cooked food. So that means that the source of the calories can make a big difference on how much you weigh. It doesn't even matter if you eat a lot of calories is it's from the right source. Another thing i learned is the concept of chewing. Chewing your food enough is so important because it slows down your eating, it helps you to enjoy the taste more, it digests your food better and is just great for weight loss. My 4 rules are,1. take small pea sized bites- fast if you're super hungry till you've filled your mouth. This is good because you digest your food better in your mouth and if you overeat it's only by a few small bitefuls, not huge- 50 calorie bites. 2. chew until you're food is liquid or dissolves in your mouth. 3. when chewing push food to the sides and front of your teeth so you chew it more. 4. don't swallow on purpose, swallow automatically, when your food is in small enough particles you will automatically swallow it. This has helped me lose weight because i haven't always been great about eating the healthy food and i still ate what i wanted but now i eat less just because of the way i eat now. Also, i learned this from my first diet, but drink enough water! Drink a lot of water when you're hungry because it could be thirst and not hunger. i'm glad i never forgot this rule. I still may have more to learn because i still have weight to lose but i think that's what helped me lose weight when intuitive eating failed me because i took metabolism lowering drugs. I stayed on the same drug dose but i lost 65 pounds of 85 pound weight gain. So my new rules must work. I lose weight VERY slowly because of the drugs, only 5 pounds a month, so i can't wait to get off the drugs and get my metabolism back. I'll probably lose the rest of the weight a lot quicker. but even if i dont get off the drugs soon i'm sure i'll lose the last 40 pounds with the above extra rules. so, just wanted to give some helpful advice with my critique of this book. i still think this is a great book and has helped me so much that i don't feel bad when i slip off healthy raw food and eat some unhealthy cooked food. it's best to be stress free about food- no matter what you eat- that's the most important thing and what people who live to long ages usually have in common. so, i hope this long review helps someone! :D (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-03-01 22:15:01 EST)

I have had problems in my relationship with food since I was 13. I'm 29 now and was so sick of hating my body and loving and then hating food. I had eating disorders when I was younger very severely and even though I no longer have them, I couldnt seem to have a "normal" relationship with food. I have been reading this book for 3 weeks and I already notice a huge difference in how I think. About myself, food, portions. This was what I have been waiting for. I have hope now that I can be a healthy weight without doing it the wrong way and that I will finally have peace with food.

I have been battling bulimia on and off for about 15 years. I have read many books and have been through many therapist, but this book just MADE SENSE!!! As I read this book it brought back so many memories of how your mind gets so warped when you diet. I would always tell myself that on Monday I was starting a diet and not eating anything but veggies, fruit, etc.... Then, come Thursday I would start my bingeing and eat until Sunday until I felt like I was going to explode, while taking laxatives and over-exercising literally in between bites. I will NEVER diet again. This book tells you how dieting DOES NOT WORK!!!!! We have seen to many friends and family members join dieting programs and end up larger after they go off the diet. This book tells you to EAT IN MODERATION whatever you want....you honestly DO NOT eat nowhere near as much when you tell yourself you can have ANYTHING you want. I LOVED this book and reccomend it to anyone who has ever dieted and failed, has suffered from and eating disorder, or just plain overeats!

When I first picked up this book I thought, yeah right, I can get rid of the food police in my head, I'm so sure. But, after reading only about a third of the book I'm convinced it works. I'm already experiencing a better relationship with food! I want to rush out and by this for every one of my girlfriends! This book can change your whole perspective, if you are ready to change.

For anyone who has discovered, as I have, that dieting doesn't work, I highly recommend this book. This is no light read, however. There is no a quickie diet between these pages! The material is very dense and at times you will have to read slowly, put it down, and "digest" it in your psyche and daily life before going on to the next section.
Developing the philosphy and practice of becoming an intuitive eater will require a serious commitment of self trust, time, and focus. You will need to rethink a good deal of what you've been taught to believe is true about eating and weight. Every expert on tv and every ad or news article about health and weight will contradict and scare you when you first begin this journey. Persist anyway! You're already scared and powerless regarding your weight now, so why not try something different and end yo-yo dieting in your lifetime? You will develop courage and connection to your inner guidance if you persist in reading and implementing the authors' challenges. The book will help you get firmly entrenched in self esteem and self empowerment on the subject of body size, image, and validation, in my opinion. One helpful addition if you are serious about the book, would be getting the help of a counselor or wise friend to regularly encourage and support you when every message in the world around you about weight and diet appears to be opposite what the authors are trying to teach you. This book will seriously save your sanity regarding your body image and help you develop a deep self trust. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-18 18:44:27 EST)

This book is the best written testament for yo yo dieters. If only I had it available to me when I was in my twenties, maybe I wouldn't be dealing with the health problems I live with today. It teaches you how to deal with food whether your an over eater or a person with an eating disorder. Food is not our enemy! It's a refreshing outlook for people with any issues with food. It is NOT another diet book!!

I know this book works--I've read it multiple times--but I could not get my behavior in sync with natural eating. Until I sought professional help. Deppression, bi-polar, and other conditions that cause a serious drop in seratonin to the brain among other complications may in fact be the cause of your overeating more than you estimated. I feel like if I would have just sought help from a professional earlier I could have avoided a lot of pain mentally emotionally-over the years. So, I wish you lick in your healthy endeavors.

This book might help you to eat intuitively, however, it does little to overcome over-eating. It does little to deal with the true cause of overeating--the pleasures you get from it. trust me when i say that if you eat compulsively, this book won't help much. all this book does is tell you to never diet, which is a good start but it won't solve nearly all of your problems with food. You still have to resolve why you eat & over-eat.

Great Book. This is the first book of its kind that tells us not what to eat or how much to eat like others really know our bodies more than we do, but tells us HOW to eat. And that is the key to weight managment.
The problem with other books is that you are not working on developing your own plan for what your body needs, and rather than apply reason and judgment from within, you are deferring to whatever self-imposed plan is in a book. The problem with this is that it keeps you in a repetitive cycle of being "on" or "off" your diet--and what started out as a tiny transgression turns into a failed diet plan. Evelyn Tribole teaches that all you need is a desire to become a little self-aware of what you are thinking and believing. Here are just a few examples: 1. I must learn better control over my behavior. 2. I must lose this weight quickly. 3. I am defective and will always have to follow some kind of plan. 4. Avoiding certain foods religiously will lead me to permanent weight loss. 5. If I ever do lose this weight, I'll be trading away my happiness. 6. I don't have enough willpower. I have to find more somehow. 7. I must alter the content of my food so I can keep eating a lot. 8. I'm not willing to change my relationship with food. I just want to lose the weight. By following Evelyn Tribole's plan you can replace these beliefs with more rational beliefs and self-talk. You will be helped most if you are willing to write down your new beliefs and spend a few minutes each day reading them. In this way, the new self-talk will eventually become part of your thinking. Pretty straightforward, right? Here are some more books on health that would make an excellent companion to this one: * The realAge makeover : take years off your looks and add them to your life by Michael F. Roizen * Thin for life : 10 keys to success from people who have lost weight & kept it off by Anne M. Fletcher * Fasting and eating for health : a medical doctor's program for conquering disease by Joel Fuhrman * Dr. Bob Arnot's guide to turning back the clock * Pritikin Program for Diet and Exercise by Nathan Pritikin * The fit-or-fat target diet by Covert Bailey * The Okinawa program : how the world's longest-lived people achieve everlasting health--and how you can too by Bradley J. Willcox * Low-fat living : turn off the fat-makers, turn on the fat-burners for longevity, energy, weight loss, freedom from disea by Robert K. Cooper * The Complete & Up-To-Date Fat Book by Karen J. Bellerson * The Metabolic Typing Diet: Customize Your Diet to Your Own Unique Body Chemistry by William Linz Wolcott * The South Beach Diet Dining Guide : Your Reference Guide to Restaurants Across America by Arthur Agatston * The Great American Detox Diet: 8 Weeks to Weight Loss and Well-Being by Alex Jamieson * The weigh down diet by Gwen Shamblin The bottom line for people trying to shed pounds is that both exercise and diet are important, and exercise may be particularly key in the ultimate distribution of a person's body fat.
- eating in small portions, not overindulging - eating only fresh ingredients, drinking a lot of water - eating a lot of vegetables and fruits - eating slowly, well chewing each byte - eating all kind of foods, not following any fad diets - changing your diet according to the season - exercising The above well known truths can be found in many books (French Women Don't Get Fat; Can We Live 150, Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About, and many others). In addition, in the book Can We Live 150 you will find the following bad habits that lead people to obesity: - The habit of eating fast and not chewing the food well - Frequent snacking or constant chewing - Incorrect combining of food products - Lying down after meals - Sitting lifestyle - Eating while watching TV - Eating while irritated - Eating before bedtime or at night - Eating mostly refined and cooked food products. Intuitive eating is a good idea, but in the modified foods environment it needs to be supported by additional knowledge of proper food combination etc. Books by Tombak, and some other authors will well fill the void. We've all been there-angry with ourselves for overeating, for our lack of willpower, for failing at yet another diet that was supposed to be the last one. But the problem is not you, it's that dieting, with its emphasis on rules and regulations, has stopped you from listening to your body. Written by two prominent nutritionists, Intuitive Eating focuses on nurturing your body rather than starving it, encourages natural weight loss, and helps you find the weight you were meant to be.And what they say is true when you do this, you naturally shed pounds. The book also describes how the pleasure of making your body feel good will motivate us to exercise more and be fit.

What I enjoyed about this book the most was that I walked away after reading it feeling positive about myself. So many diet books only reinforced the guilt feeling that seems to lead to more overeating or starving behaviors. The authors really focus on finding and defining your personal boundaries with food and gaining back trust in yourself. Following the steps takes food right off its pedestal and places it where it belongs. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who struggles with eating issues.

The concept behind "Intuitive eating" is both simple and effective especially if you don't suffer from compulsive behavior, which is difficult to overcome without a support group. I think that this is a detailed and valuable lifestyle program or more like guidelines for paying less attention to food and down playing its importance in your life. This IS important for successful weight loss. I have to say that the emotional side of the process is very important, although there is also physical/biochemical side, which is not thoroughly covered. That's why I think that you should pair it with the exceptional "your scientific diet" for 100% superior coverage of the broad spectrum of issues and challenges that lay ahead of each person who wants to lose weight quickly and easily. Intuitive Eating focuses on how to eat and heal from within instead of blacklisting and whitelisting many foods. The two authors are very knowledgeable and I am confident that this is one of the must have books for everyone facing weight issues.

This book was recommended to me by a nutritionist. Since I liked her approach to nutrition counseling, I ordered and read the book. I could relate to it in many ways, and read it quickly, yet thoroughly. Although some of the analogies were too focused on classic eating disorders such as anorexia and bulemia, for me to relate to as an overeater, overall, I still rate the book highly. In fact, so much so, that I have become a patient of one of the authors.

I am in process of working this method but I have to say that these ladies definitely have the idea here on how to heal eating issues that one has! They definitely break it down for the reader and give ideas of the different stages one will go through while healing. I bought this book because Katherine McPhee (American Idol-last season) mentioned that this book make such a difference for her in her healing while at an eating disorders clinic. I, too, am a performer, and need to heal from within. Diets do NOT work--at least not forever! This book is definitely worth the read and the program contained within worth working!
