Absolute beginners who know nothing about the Internet and/or business will probably find this book useful, though not necessarily more useful than many free online resources. Fox clearly doesn't know much about the technical aspects of the Internet, but nothing he says is so terribly wrong that it will make a difference. Likewise, the general business information is cursory, and adds nothing to free information available online from the SBA and other groups, but it's accurate as far as it goes.

Fox makes a few points that are quite sound: you don't have to know a lot about technology or business to get started selling stuff online; it's better to get started quickly and learn as you go than to develop a perfect business plan that never gets executed; and overspending at the beginning is a bigger danger than being undercapitalized.

It doesn't take an entire book to reveal these "secrets"; nor is Fox a particularly compelling writer. But not being horribly wrong is actually better than average for a "get rich on the Internet" book. I also appreciated that he didn't advocate spamming or deceptive SEO practices, though he could have done his readers (and, thereby, the rest of the world) a service by covering these issues in more detail. His discussion of copyright could also be both improved and expanded.

While I don't necessarily recommend this book, I don't know of a better one to recommend for an absolute beginner who thinks they might want to get rich online. For general background on starting a small business, I would recommend the classic Small Time Business Operator, 10th Edition: How to Start Your Own Business, Keep Your Books, Pay Your Taxes & Stay Out of Trouble (Small Time Operator).

Scott Fox covers everything in this how-to book on starting your own internet business. Parts 1 and 2 start with brainstorming business ideas and researching them to be sure they're viable and moves on to explain different business models and how these relate to the ideas you've just brainstormed.

In Part 3, Fox explains the technologies behind the website(s) you are about to build and makes recommendations for how to do it cost effectively. He shows you how to choose a domain name, build a website, and develop "content" (all of the written material on your site).

Part 4 is the best section in my opinion. It's all about marketing and driving business to your site whether you have no budget, a small budget, or a real budget. And what good is having a fabulous site if no one knows about it, right?

Part 5 covers legal stuff and, as expected, is a bit drier than the rest of the book. But it covers important ground and Fox does it in a straightforward and easy to understand way.

One other thing about the whole "millionaire" thing in the title that others have commented on: Fox's point is that even if you're not making millions in your new e-commerce business, you can still live like a millionaire. How? By living on your terms and working when and how you want. And maybe you only make $500k or even only $250k so you're not actually a millionaire. But you know what? The average person isn't making that working 40, 50, 60, or 70 hour weeks working for someone else.

I'd absolutely recommend this book to anyone who needs the kick in the butt necessary to start their own thing. Fox's style is simple and easy to understand, but at the same time encouraging and motivating as hell.

(Hide Review...)  Good basic information on making money online
Reviewer Permalink
I'd never heard of Scott Fox before, but from what I read in the book, he's been quite successful at making money online. He's worked with some big names so it appears he knows what he's talking about.

The book spends most of the time covering the nuts and bolts of choosing a subject area (niche), determining its feasibility to make money, creating a web site and making the big bucks. He uses lots of case studies of people who are currently making money online, which is very useful.

I finished the book optimistic, but still a bit vague on the next action step. I'm in a bit of analysis paralysis, which he actually discusses briefly in the book. It's where you spend so much time planning and preparing to make money and learning to avoid all the pitfalls that you never take action. The book has given me some more ideas on how to make money, and I plan to refer back to it in the future as I take action.

If you're unfamiliar with how people make money online, it's a great book to help you learn. If you already know about the general methods of making money like drop shipping, selling on eBay, product development, affiliate marketing, digital information products (aka eBooks), then you probably won't find anything new.

(Hide Review...)  A good, solid handbook
Reviewer Permalink
This is a well concieved tutorial on the basic concepts and tools for starting an online business. Fox keeps it simple, helping the reader to focus on the core elements of the business, and showing how to get all the other administrative stuff done by using cheap or free online services.

Fox walks the entrepreneur through the steps of identifying potential business ideas from everyday activities, hobbies, and experiences. He shows how to identify business ideas unique to the internet, as well as ways to use the Internet to turn non-starters into worldwide opportunities. He then shows how to use the Internet to get the business up and running as quickly and cheaply as possible, taking most (if not all) of the risk out of a new business startup. Ideas for free (or nearly free) site/business promotion are detailed as well.

Fox's ideas aren't new. His tricks are not new. But this book presents the steps for establishing an online business, from soup to nuts, in a simple and easy to understand and follow format. No magic here - just a solid handbook to get the self-starter going.

Reviewer Permalink
Despite the title of this book this is not a hype filled volume of hyperbole disguised as information. Instead this book gives concise useful advice on how to make money online. Scott Fox defines an on-line millionaire as someone who can make a million dollars on the internet. He explains that some will do this in a year some in five years and others in 20 years or more (ie $50,000 per year). With this premise Mr. Fox builds a roadmap for success that any online entrepreneur can follow. I highly recommend this book for anyone serious about making money online.

(Hide Review...)  Great Basic Introduction
Reviewer Permalink
This is a good basic introduction to "e-commerce" if you can get past the first 7 chapters which are very repetitive and self-promoting. I particularly do not care for books that give numerous examples of what other people have done with their newly found businesses. I am interested in as much information as possible, as quickly as possible. Skip the stories.

I am learning very quickly that people who write books about making millions are usually making their money selling those books. An internet business requires a lot of knowledge and skills that are not learned in an intro to internet riches. Read the book and expand your knowledge of every topic by reading detailed books and articles about the specifics. There is a lot they are not telling you. You need to know!!

Reviewer Permalink
It was vague, listed very few resources, and mostly just told stories of other people and their businesses. The writing is fine, but the subject jsut didn't teach me anything new. It even has basic 101 business advice, so if you have never run any biz or are brand new to the internet this is a good starter book, but really I'd look elsewhere. "Plug Your Book" by StevE WEBER WILL TEACH YOU MORE ABOUT internet marketing and places to check out. A new user will still find theirselves wondering wheredo I start at the end of this book. 3g internet marketing is another book much better than this.

I did read the whole book and it did have some good tips here and there, but most of the topics were more to 'inspire' you than to teach you something. I am surprised at all the good reviews of this book (at-least so many 5 star ratings). I was hoping this book would have had useful tips for Search Engine Optimization; the entire book just seemed to lack something.

I'm going to do something I rarely do here. I highly recommend INTERNET RICHES by Scott Fox for anyone who is serious about starting up or improving their Internet business. But I'm also going to recommend you do something else first. If you are just now starting out with your Internet business, read Your Internet Cash Machine by Joe Vitale and Jillian Wheeler first.

The two books cover some of the same content, but the Vitale-Wheeler book is written on a more basic level and is a little easier to comprehend for the beginner. This book goes into much more depth and also covers many subjects not covered in Cash Machine.

For those already involved in an Internet business, you will learn a lot more than you might think. I know I sure did. I found particularly interesting, Chapter 25, where Fox gives some outstanding business advice regarding the value of mistakes and knowing when to change direction.

This is not necessarily an easy read and at times, has a text-bookish feel to it, but the knowledge gleaned is well worth putting forth the time to read this one.

(Hide Review...)  A Gold Mine of Useful Tips

If you are resolved to begin your own e-business,you get all the inspiration and advice you will need from Scott Fox's Internet Riches: The Simple Money-Making Secrets of Online Millionaires.

Fox is a highly successful e-business veteran who is the director of The Liminal Institute, a think tank based in California dedicated to the promotion of entrepreneurship. Fox states in his introduction that he founded the organization because the secrets of prosperity of the new generation of Internet businesses should be shared. In the past his expertise was only made available to top celebrities and venture capital-backed startups, he is now making it available to everyone through Internet Riches: The Simple Money-Making Secrets of Online Millionaires.

This must-read compilation of useful tips is divided into six parts and concludes with two appendixes, a glossary and an index. Beginning with an assurance that the Internet is alive and kicking in spite of what some "experts" have to say, Fox next proceeds by giving us a broader picture of e-business opportunities by exploring three waves of the Internet's millionaires. The first one he terms the efficiency millionaires who start businesses focusing on helping people and businesses do things faster, easier, or in more entertaining ways. As Fox states, "the key to finding Efficiency Millionaire e-business opportunities is to simply pay attention and keeping track of the needs of the people in your daily life." The second e-business millionaire is the Product Millionaire that can be broken into two categories, those that compete on price and those that compete on selection. The third e-business millionaire is the niche one or those who have profited by recognizing that communities are formed not only based on common social interests, but also on shared purchasing interests.

The next section of the book examines developing your own e-business model where Fox demonstrates the Millionaire Types Theory with a concrete case study showing the steps that an entrepreneur can take to evaluate his or her own interests in order to find a potential million-dollar business idea. In other words, what e-business you should pursue and how to go about finding one that is suitable.

Once you have decided on an e-business, an entire section is devoted to building your business where you learn about technology secrets and strategies, choosing a domain name, choosing a website hosting company, building a website, finding a web designer, e-commerce shopping carts, eBay, website content, reality checks before investing time and money, action plans, and testing your business.

Not to be left out are Internet Marketing Secrets, legal issues and administration. Fox loads up the various sections with Internet Millionaire Secrets. For example, he asserts that we are surrounded by business opportunities that we may not even see. The best of these are simple ideas based on making your customers' lives easier and more efficient. Another tip, you may have an excellent product to sell however friends and relatives try to dissuade you into believing that no one will purchase your goods. However, is this really true and when naysayers claim that "nobody" will buy your product or service, do they really imply that there will be zero customers? As Fox states: "Nobody" probably means nobody I know or nobody in our town, because, in the past, that's as far as most entrepreneurs could afford to market their goods." However, these individuals can't or don't want to look farther then their noses and fail to look at the bigger picture. Remember, the Internet now makes it possible to easily sell worldwide with millions of potential customers.

In addition to these secrets, Fox also provides many concrete examples and case studies illustrating on how you can take advantage of all of the business tools available, however, as he remarks, his book is "not about get-rich-quick schemes or vague strategies for envisioning abundance or positive thinking." In order to profit from this advice and sage counsel, it is imperative that you bring to the table your own creativity, dedication and hard work. Fox doesn't have any magical formulas to instant success, although he can provide those interested in starting their own e-business with some valuable tools to help them on their way.

As an added bonus, the book contains a very useful concluding section or appendixes containing a list of e-businesses that have been discussed in the book, Internet research skills and a glossary of various terms used.

I found this book to be just what I needed to get started with an internet business...now! There are lots of inspiring ideas presented here, and plenty of information for even a non-techie like myself to feel confident enough to jump right in and take action. The book covers areas such as brainstorming for ideas, business models, choosing target markets, web hosting, domain names, building a site, marketing your e-business, and legal issues. Inspirational stories of successful start-ups are also included in the book.

Scott's tone throughout Internet Riches is one of a personal coach leading you through your options, inspiring you to really think about what it is you want to do. I realized that for me, the answer was a business in nature photography because that's where my passion lies. It might seem obvious to have a business that encompasses your passion, but believe me, you can come up with a lot of excuses to not pursue it. Scott's book peels away those excuses...it was like a friendly kick in the pants to just get going and do something! Due to his clear, friendly writing style, I felt I could tackle the logistics of starting an on-line business -- and this was very important to me -- without spending much money.

I've recommended this book to friends, and truly believe that it's an invaluable resource for anyone who's interested in starting an e-business but is unsure about how to proceed.

There are lots of inspiring ideas presented here, and plenty of information for even a non-techie like myself to feel confident enough to jump right in and take action. I didn't have a clear idea about what kind of business I wanted to develop; I only knew that I was growing bored with my jewelery design business. I'd become tired of constantly reproducing designs, and thought that perhaps an on-line business was the answer.

This is an excellent book that provides a great overview of basically everything relating to an online venture, and goes beyond just random tidbits to provide actual useful info. Even if you're a very technically-oriented person like myself, you'll find the mechanics presented by the book relating to business areas to be solid gold, even though the computer-related information will be little new to you (still a good read though, thanks to the text not being dry).

If you're not good with computers, this book is going to be worth its weight in platinum to you, and will set you on the right path in regards to finding the info to learn from and giving you the fundamental concepts you'll need to learn what you need to know.

Overall, this book is an excellent text, written in an inspirational-enough fashion without being over-the-top with it, has very good text that is not dry/annoying to read/boring, with plenty of useful info throughout. The one point the author makes during the entire book is of course the most valid, that is, your online business will not just build itself. However, by learning what you need to, and reading books like these, you'll sure stand a better chance than you would otherwise!

This book teaches that even if you are not the next Amazon, ebay, or Google, you can still make a million on the internet. You just need to find a niche that is underserved.

I purchased "Starting an Online Business for Dummies" and the reviews were mixed. In someone's reviews, they mentioned this book and said it was much better. They suggested buying this book instead of the Dummies book. I took the advice, and am glad I did!

The book is great because it helps you understand that you don't need to be a billion dollar business to start with. Even small, underserved niche markets can earn a million.

I highly recommend this book if you are considering an ebusiness. It is well worth the money. I have been talking about this book to many people who have asked to borrow the book. I keep telling them to pick up their own copy because I am still using it as a reference! It is a great book!

This book gives a good overview of internet business. There are different ways to do it, and one must choose for himself which one is more suitable. But unlike many other books on the topic, this one also goes into the technicalities: how to choose and register a domain name, how to start the actual site. It presents various options, and shows how to start quickly with minimal spending.

One thing that was lacking for me is the information regarding affiliate business. But I guess there are other books on the topic.

The book is very detailed and practical. Good for someone who wants to start his website.

The entrepreneur profiles were very helpful with allowing me to focus on my ideas and interests. The stories were also very encouraging. I learned that my dreams are alive. Your book is a total eye-opener. I've always wanted to start my own business besides being an engineer, but I used to think that it ONLY involved me having to spend a ton of money to have a "physical" business.

All through undergrad and grad school, I've come up with different ideas and I wasn't totally sure how to get anything started. After reading this book...it really helped me to focus and generate even more great ideas. You've opened up a whole new world for me. I recommend this book to those who are trying to find their focus or those who are seeking more guidance and understanding.

I have to take issue with the repeated references to millionaires, riches, making millions, secrets, etc. I think the book does present some good strategies and ideas for making money online, but all the "millionaire" hype is a bunch of nonsense. Most of the people he profiles in the book are not millionaires. Having an internet company with a million dollars in annual sales does not make you a millionaire either. I didn't expect to find any million dollar ideas in the book anyway, but come on: the only reason the word millionaire appears in the title and on just about every page is to add hype to what are very simple and basic strategies that you can find in a number of internet business books. Having read several of these books, I found little information in here that was either new or novel. I'm sending mine back.

Scott Fox is to be congradulated on his enthusiastic tone which goes down easy and for his presentation that makes web-entrepreunering seem accessible to anyone. The caveats are: 1) If you have some experience as an enterpreuner a good portion of the material feelings too basic [but that's no biggie as you can always skim] 2) the bigger caveat is to research before using his recommended vendors. If you go to his website, you'll notice that the sites/vendors he recommends happen to affliate programs [ie. he makes money for referring you to them if you sign up]. Nothing wrong with this on a website, but when you buy a book you expect totally objective advice. And often you can find better deals/offers than the ones he recommends.
Good luck.

This is a really really good book. I learned that the web is open to anyone and that with a little thought, creativity and research you can take an idea make it a reality and not spend a ton of money doing it, but make a great deal of money implementing it.

I thought the book was awesome and inspiring. It really got my creative juices flowing. It also got me believing that I can actually build a moneymaking website and not break the bank doing it.

If you want a book that is a easy read, not technically overwhelming, will show you step by step the little things that you need to know to create a website and will motivate you, this is the book for you.

I am the president and CEO of a small, internet business. I read many books on marketing, PR, and sales to constantly increase my knowledge of the marketplace. I recently read Scott C. Fox's Internet Riches: The Simple Money-making Secrets of Online Millionaires. I quite enjoyed it.

Scott teaches the nuts and bolts of putting together an internet business in a price-conscious manner that can be run out of your garage. He cites many examples of successful internet business that are run by every day people.

If you have a product or an idea and are thinking of marketing it on the internet, if you have never used the internet or find the whole prospect a complete mystery, Scott's book is a good place to start.

Kudos to you Scott, keep writing books.

Scott, I purchased at least 5 books on Internet Marketing & piles of ebooks, by some very popular authors.

I have to say, your book is #1 for me!!! I am just learning about how to get a business going on the internet & I can read for hours to learn something.

What I loved about your book was that it was very detailed & yet easy to read & understand. I've learned so much & feel I truly received my $$ worth in buying this very educational book. This book from cover to cover will not disappoint!!! The other books have nothing on this book.

There are direct answers, explanations, resources & no run arounds. Have you ever read a book on a certain subject but felt you didn't get what you needed? Then you had to go out & buy another book? This is the only book you will need to get you on your way.

Scott, I am working on my ideas & am so thankful to you for writing this book. Please continue, I look forward to more.

I have read the whole thing and I have gotten so much from this book!! I just recently started the steps mentioned in the book and I have already made $5,000 in one month. And best of all, it was not hard. But dont get me wrong, this book has nothing to do with GET RICH QUICK SCHEMES, you actually have to think on your own a bit and actually do some work. BUT the information that he shares leads you to think about clever ways to make money that you may have never thought of before!!

This book provided good information and served it's purpose. Several good, specific examples of other internet start ups. I would recommend this book if your at the very initial stages of considering an internet start up. However if you've already done some research and your moving forward with your idea then I would recommend a more advanced book.

I lowered the rating to average because the book has a bunch of unneeded, useless filler. Especially at the start I feel the author continues on some points unnecessarily.

I bought this book because I was interested in starting an online business. It was so straight forward and motivational that I sent the book to other family members and we formed a partnership and have our first online project sunflowerocity going. I guarantee you will love this book, particularly if you are new to internet marketing. I followed up reading this book by reading The E-Code: 33 Internet Superstars Reveal 43 Ways to Make Money Online Almost Instantly---Using Only Email and with the knowledge from the first book this was a great follow-up that provided dozens of tips to from 35 experts to help make any online business successful.

If you are considering starting an on-line business, and you have not decided yet on what type of e-business you want, this book is a great "first stop." I had already done some research and had planned my product, so the book didn't really apply to me until about half-way through. Even so, I found his book to have a lot of great ideas and suggestions. I appreciate that he has a website which he keeps updated of his "favorite" sources. I also found it easy to read and understand.

One part that I also really appreciated was that at the end he gives you a lot of encouragement. I had started to wonder if it was really worth trying my idea, but after reading his last chapter I realized, as he said, that you can quit anytime, so why before you even start?

If you have a lot of experience or background in this field, his book may be too simplified for you; however, if you are just beginning, he is a great resource!

This book was great. I'm reading it a second time. The case studies and examples are truely inspirational. As you read, you'll think to yourself "Hey, I can do that, what an awesome idea. That doesnt sound to hard". Scotts ability to lay out the steps in an easy to understand fashion is fabulous.

You will quickly realize that you dont have to be an expert in all of the many areas of starting and running business like these. The most important thing is to just start doing it. You'll learn as you go. Its time to take control of your destiny, be happy, wealthy and wise.

I cant wait to be doing business as an entrepreneur in the near future as a direct result of reading this book.

This book reminds me of a seminar one of my friends attended at an airport hotel after he responded to an ad that promised how to unlock "the secret" of Internet riches. The seminar speakers provided flashy presentations and a lot of motivational banter, but ultimately, my friend was left with nothing except his wheelchair (seriously, Ronny is a parapalegic). Anyway, this book also promises to provide people with "secrets," as if the Internet is some mystical temple that is going provide salvation if only you know how to decipher its secret cryptograms. There is no secret to starting a solid Web business--develop a solid technology that can be protected with patents, and grow it with good customer service that meets a real need in the marketplace. Don't listen to a huckster with good hair!!!!

FIRST: I'm a more advanced web user, have created websites before and know a bit about marketing, however I am NO expert.

I was expecting this book to bring me new cutting edge ideas for marketing and building my new venture. I thought I would read about secret tips not widely known. Instead I found the info in this book 98% useless!

Let's put it this way. If you think AOL IS the internet, you WILL find this book of great knowledge. If you have never built a website before you will find this book good. If you know what HTML, CSS, Photoshop or a domain name is and how to register one, this book is a complete waste of money.

Learning books usually take me weeks to read as I'm trying to absorb as much info as possible. This book I skimmed through in one day because the content was so basic and dumb'd down. Many of his recommendations about building a "million dollar business" are very questionable, for example using templates for your site, do as little testing as possible and overall being as generic as possible. I can tell you if you follow his recommendations you will look like the other 50,000,000 sites out there no one visits.

If you buy this book and find the content as boring as I did, skip to the last 30 pages or so there are a couple things that might interest you. Also the way of calculating the "million dollar business" is pretty sad as well. Say you have a company that in 5 years GROSS profit is 1 million, there you go you now under his terms have a million dollar e-biz!

I never usually write reviews, but this book really wasted my money on something I thought was going to give me good insight.

This book was a great read, from cover to cover. I was so sad to reach the last page as it was truly enjoyable, inspiring and motivating. The author really does a great job of stimulating the readers' own creativity and thoughts regarding all the ways you can take something you are passionate about and turn it into a business.

You may have an initial idea or two about how you can take your interests or current business into a profitable internet venture, but reading this book is guaranteed to leave you with even more ideas on the different ways to go about it. Make sure you have a notepad and pen handy as you read, you are sure to ponder some creative ideas worth jotting down! The authors' voice is friendly and encouraging in this book.

I especially appreciated the mention of "overanalysis paralysis" and the author's assertion that this is actually the natural product of a creative mind considering all the possibilites.

I have to say, I only wish more information in the book is devoted to actual website creation and launch, and how to choose a shopping cart system, or web designer etc, but I realize these are not subjects that can be put into a nutshell. These are the hurdles that one still must cross in order to create a more notable and profitable site.

Although the book started a bit slow with too much rahrah stuff at the outset, I am very glad that I stuck with it as he really takes you through how other successful people have done their thing and how to target an area where you can succeed as well. Well researched and sequenced, he has a winner here!
