I purchased this book to educate myself about the process of IVF... I wanted to get a medical perspective that was balanced... not overly scientific, yet not dumbed down. I was really pleased with the book and would recommend it to anyone who is considering IVF. It described the process from beginning to end, enabled me to be a more educated consumer and provided me with questions that I could ask my RE. I find myself going back to this book as a reference guide...

I bought this book shortly before my husband and I made the final decision to go ahead with IVF. We went through IVF at one of the Sher Institutes (in IL) and I found Dr. Sher's book to be very helpful in answering some of questions/worries and even after speaking with the nurses & doctors at the clinic, this book was a great quick reference tool for any questions that I had.
I believe that this book would be helpful for anyone considering and/or going through the IVF process, regardless of what clinic you are having the procedure through. Although the book doesn't give personal accounts of the IVF process, it does provide very helpful and technical information. I found myself referring to this book more than any of the other IVF books that I purchased. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-30 00:31:35 EST)

If you want a clear explanation of the process of ivf this is an excellent resource. It avoids personal stories and provides a comprehensive overview of the range of options for assisted reproduction.

I made the mistake of purchasing his older book called The A.R.T. of making babies updated edition. Do not buy unless your doing a research paper. This book was written in 1998 and the information is outdated. Make sure you purchase the 2005 edition. I wish amazon.com would have made this clearer. I did read it anyways and had the book been filled with updated information it could be informative. I found the "Couple's guide to In Vitro Fertilization a much better book. Having recently gone through the procedure it was right on the money and very easy to read and understand.

My husband and I recently found out that IVF was probably our only hope at having a biological child. We live in an area where IVF is basically non-existent... as is the information that we've received. I wanted to find out everything I could about the IVF process, expenses, etc. This book was an excellent source of information from fertility testing, to the entire IVF process. It also went into depth on new procedures that can be used along with IVF. VERY inforamtive, and I would recommend to anyone craving knowledge about IVF.

I noticed the review from KK "Current IVFer" below and wanted to to say that this is the NEWEST edition of In Vitro Fertilization: The A.R.T. of Making Babies by Dr Geoffrey Sher (Copyright 2005). This book contains NEW information about IVF techniques and technology. KK "Current IVFer", if you received the older version of this book, when you thought that you had ordered this NEW edition, contact the Sher Institutes for Reproductive Medicine, Patient Resource Center at www.haveababy.com, I'll bet they'll be happy to replace your copy.

While this book provides a lot of technical information it was written over seven years ago. The information provided is practically ancient in the high tech and ever changing world of IVF. The author is very dry, clinical and frankly quite negative about the chances of success. Again, this is due to the age of the book. IVF success rates have increased dramatically since this book was published. A much better, positive, timely and accurate book is The Couples Guide to IVF. It was written in this century and it much more helpful, upbeat and informative.

With IVF technology advancing so quickly, it's hard to find very up-to-date reading material on this subject. However this book is still a good reference and it's very organized and informative.

This book has all the information you need to learn the ins and outs of this emotionally difficult process. It gave me all I needed to continue the discussions with my specialist and understand what he was suggesting and why. It also gave me a sense of a community of folks who are facing the same issues I am. This really helped me feel less alone and unusual.

I looked at every IVF book around and chose this one to help me through the IVF process. Things are explained in a way your fertility doctor would (or should) explain them, in a consise and easy-to-follow manner. What I like most about the book is that it only covers IVF, not all high-tech treatments. I highly recommend this book to those starting out on the road to IVF treatments.

We are a couple just starting the IVF process. While we read numerous web pages online, there was no clear, concise reference book that walks you through all the steps.
"The Art of Making Babies" provides a detailed overview of each step in the process from the initial meeting with your physician to what to expect in the final stages. The book has answered many of our questions. In addition, the book also provides questions you should ask when looking for an IVF facility or entering a particular stage of the process. Highly recommended. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-06 20:23:23 EST)

This book provides individuals undergoing any type of assisted reproduction with a guide to help them in decision making by thoroughly informing them at their own pace. Now entering our second cycle of in vitro fertilization, I find myself reading certain chapters in the book for the third and fourth time. Each experience is different. Although a patient must rely heavily on the expertise of their physician, reproduction in this manner is an incredibly complex occurrence, creating many questions that this book accurately answers. I've come to depend on it greatly and find that it has become almost a constant sight on my reading table. I have found that much of the writing that has been done about in vitro fetilization was done so for the physician and clinician as the reader. This is a thorough, as well as current, explanation of what a patient can expect, and should look for when entering a program for assisted reproduction. - Kristie Greiss
