As soon as I bought the Kindle I picked this book up. It let me understand the 'hidden' capabilities of Kindle. For example, I use the slideshow feature of Kindle described in this book immediately to turn the pages automatically for me when I am working out on a bike or a treadmill. To give me enough time to read the page while working out I set the font size to be maximum. I listen to the music while working out with Kindle as well. For someone who just bought Kindle, this book will get you started quickly and serves as a quick reference in the Kindle. I use the search feature of Kindle to hit the information in the ebook whenever I want to lookup. Highly recommend buying this book, for this price you will not regret it.

I am extremely disappointed in this pamphlet. I recently purchased a Kindle (which I love, by the way)and wish to know about everything it can do. This 'book' seemed like it would be worth a try, particularly since it was marked down from $4.95 to 99 cents. How can you go wrong on 99 cents, right? (Although today I see the price is $2.39.??) I found this to have only one chapter (I believe it was #12)that had anything even vaguely helpful. I now know how to play Minesweeper! There were a few other tips, but the majority of the beginning chapters were more or less a screed for the Kindle. Also, if you want to self publish for the Kindle it could be helpful indeed. I feel somewhat mislead - where were the '100 pages of other cool tips'.
Highly misleading.

I missed the word "excerpt" in the book description. What you get is a tiny excerpt that tells you how to use the Kindle Browser to read blogs via the Google Reader. Might be worth the $2.50 price if there were a dozen other articles of similar depth. As is, not worth the money.

This is only four stars because I'm waiting eagerly for the rest of the book. I have had my kindle now for about three weeks...and love it! But I found the manual that came with the unit a little thin on info for actually using it. This article showed me several tricks that I use now, and I am looking forward to getting more time to explore the email aspects, along with reading the complete book. It was worth the small investment to help me get the most out of the Kindle, especially since some of the finer points weren't readily available in the included documentation. I say it's worth every penny.

If you are buying a Kindle and are new at the game, this is a worthwhile investment. It gives you all sorts of information you may not pick up on from the Kindle Users Guide. It has the bonus of regular updates on the Kindle and the promise of a no-cost copy of the finished book when it is published later this year [2008]. You also can get a bunch of links to interesting Kindle websites. I have had my Kindle for about 2 weeks now and find it worth every penny I spent on it. It works just as advertised and is extremely practical. This guide got me started right from the beginning; explaining features I would still not have known about if I had depended solely on the Kindle Users Guide. If you are wondering whether to go ahead and buy the Kindle, I urge you to take the plunge. Just be sure to add this article to the order!

I like the Kindle, but I don't like the endless nickel-and-diming to death that comes with it. The dime charge for putting an email attachment on your Kindle makes it literal.

This book is another example. Amazon, maker of the Kindle, produces a book on how to use their product. But you have to pay extra for the manual. That's outlandish.

It's a small amount, but for $400 the thing should come with the complete instructions.

(Hide Review...)  Okay, So it is a Little Light
Reviewer Permalink
I cannot disagree with many of the posted reviews. This book is a little light on content. Much of it can be found in the user guide that came loaded on the Kindle. But, then again, you buy for pennies more than two bucks.

I love my Kindle. I received it in December. I have subscribed to newspapers, blogs and magazines. Books are great to read on it. I particularly love it when I travel. With Whispernet, a new book is never out of reach.

Although I am a satisfied user, this book whets my whistle with potential applications. While I use it, I have a sense that it will do much more. For two bucks, this book opened my eyes to many of those new gadgets and applications. Plus, one of Kindle's promises intrigues me. I can upgrade by collection whenever there are content changes.

As a writer, I am particularly interested in the concept of "progress payments" for material. This book cannot be described as anything near complete. Yet the author is receiving payments. He promises to update this book. I hope so. He and Amazon have my 2 bucks. They will reap many more with a full compliment of content.

This article was completely unneccesary. There is nothing in the tiny amount of information about the device that you cannot find in the user guide on the home screen. I do not recommend this for the previously known content and the waste of $2.50.

Well, let's just say it isn't exactly what I expected. But it isn't as bad as some made it sound. I am not the most experienced when it comes to all the new gadgets of the world, but I am an intelligent women who can usually figure things out. Having said that...sometimes you just don't want to or have the time to figure things out. Sometimes you just want to pick up a reference manual and go for it. Let's face it, we live in a world where no one has time for anything. So I liked this guide for that reason. My days are just too busy to sit and figure the ins and outs of a new gadget. Maybe some people have more time than I do. It was nice to read through this guide and get all the information quick and easy. That is the only reason I have given this 3 stars, for the simple fact I would have eventually figured it out. So yes, I would recommend this guide. Nicely written, information was clear and precise, and it simplified everything I wanted to know and simplified it very quickly.

(Hide Review...)  A Good Aggregation of Info. Convenience is What you are getting.
Reviewer Permalink
I keep this on my kindle for quick reference along with my kindle user guide and it has saved me from having to go look for a lot of info on my own. For example, it reminded me to enable certain features to make sure they work before trying them out on my kindle which isn't a big deal but saved me a few headaches and a lot of battery power.
I'm an IT savvy person who could have written this manual if I had wanted to. I have GBs of free content, both audio and text and can easily get more. I say all this without conceit but to highlight the fact that this experience was gathered over years of playing with various convergence devices like kindle, palms, laptops, treos, etc and this little 2 or 3$ buys this info in a convenient package. It's worth the money to save you the TIME it would take you to find all this info on your own and the trial and error it would require you to get it done.
So it gets a 4. The lost star is b/c it's a bit repetitive and in places, it's not explanatory enough. The doc's organization is flawed in places where you think you are reading on your kindle but it's really taking you to a website. Not a big deal, just pay attention. It doesn't deserve any of the 1-2 star votes it gets here, I think. They just don't realize they were the wrong audience for it.
I look forward to the completed version.

Mr. Windwalker makes a compelling case for the future of Kindle, and I will watch the evolution of this amazing tool with great interest, though not with active participation. I have a Treo, a desktop, and a laptop. I don't care to be bothered by email when I'm reading or studying. Although I've only read two books on my Kindle, it's already like curling up with an old friend. It's astounding to think about having my entire library, including reference books at my fingertips. What I would like to see is a color screen Kindle. With this innovation, e-text books can become a reality, allowing Amazon to lead a revolution in education that hasn't been seen since Gutenberg.

Such fun - not only to find ways to connect using my Kindle - but to feel connected to someone who is making inroads and so willing to share. A stranger willing to anser my e-mail??? I can't believe it. So feeling "connected" applies throughout. The excerpt is easy to read - you don't have to be a geek. You don't have to young (I'm a "senior" - although I don't think of myself that way). REALLY recommend this for Kindle users whether you are a beginner or just want some hints.

This article is well-written, concise, informative, and VERY USEFUL. I gave it 5 stars for content and usefullness of the information. However, be aware that if you are outside the Whispernet service, most of the information will be unavailable to you because there are numerous hyperlinks throughout the article. My only wish is that the author had furnished everything at once without the hyperlinks. Downloading from Amazon.com produces the same result. In spite of this (major) flaw, I still rate it 5 stars and highly encourage anyone to read it (or find a way into the Whispernet service areas to be able to read most of it).

If you have to buy books on how to use a device...then it must be a fairly difficult device to use. I thought the Kindle was "user friendly" but obviously, I was wrong.
Another note about most of the GLOWING reviews for this article is that they were obviously created by the author/friends. Anyone can create as many Amazon ID's as they wish and write reviews. Not everyone will need or want this guide (the sample feature is a great tool here to review this guide and see if it's right for you), but despite what some are saying, the guide is not a necessary tool in the using the device, but it does contain hints and tips that aren't covered in the Kindle Guide included with the Kindle. It's a user's guide by a Kindle user, and all of us know that sometimes a product user can provide insight that the manufacturer doesn't.

"How to Use the Kindle for Email & Other Cool Tricks" is definitely worth a look.

Unfortunately, this book is more like a "Neat features about Kindle" user guide without a troubleshooting section than it is a self-help article. One doesn't have to go farther than the "How to use Kindle for Email..." section to find areas that are lacking. The section is laid out in a step-by-step format that shamelessly purports that checking and composing email is "easy-to-use". First of all, the webmail interface he suggests using is bare-bones minimal. Check the inbox and other folders, but hold the organizing and formatting that most people now expect out of an email client. And you want to write and send an email? Watch out for pitfalls and hang-ups in composing, reviewing and sending messages as Kindle's experimental web browser works with a poorly designed nuts-and-bolts Compose Mail form to produce a disappointing experience. All in all this author could have given us more than what any mobile email guide would have done.

...and it's not even many pennies at that. I agreed with other reviewers that yes you could play with your Kindle and eventually find out how to use certain functions, but if you don't have a lot of time to fiddle with it why not have step by step instructions from someone who knows? I thought it was an extremely helpful article.

Having the recommendations for sites and links to visit for more info such as the KindleKorner users group available is also another nice feature. It is amazing how much one can do with the Kindle. The email function is so cool and handy, as one doesn't always have a WiFi hotspot available when traveling and a laptop is so much more cumbersome. The Kindle is so portable and easy to read - sending email is like texting on a cellphone what-with the small keyboard, but doable. I am still learning how to access other sites not just Googles, and have a lot to learn, but I appreciate Mr. Windwalkers help and all of the users input at the KindleKorner on Yahoo Groups. It's great to be able to share shortcuts and hints with other users.

I commend the author for having the intiative to write this article and market it so well. After reading so many positive reviews, I decided to drop my $2.50 and see what all the talk was about. I was sorely disappointed.

I found the writing style to be awkward. The author skips around from subject to subject within the same paragraph, giving me the impression that this article is more of a "brain dump" and not a structured and well-planned piece.

In the end, this article essentially takes the long way around saying, "Hey, did you know that you can access your Gmail account with the Web browser on the Kindle!?" I kept waiting for the meat of it, but that's pretty much all I ended up with.

I would pass this one by.

It's interesting that most of the reviews are either loved it or hated it. I can't help wondering if the "don't waste your money" reviews are from Kindle owners that have mobiles with internet capability and already know how to use them.

I found the article well thought out, and I especially enjoy the links at the back to various Amazon Kindle products. Also, I enjoyed the links to free books as well. I would have liked to have a table of contents so I can skip to each section.

It also includes a way to check the time for those of us that don't wear a watch.

I also wish there was a table of Alt Keystrokes, so we can get more use out of our kindle.

Be sure to send him your email address so you can get notified of "free" products as well as article updates.

I already had a google account, and it's easy to apply the same principle to the Yahoo mail. (Be sure to click the MOBILE link near the top.)

A good investment!

Very interesting read. Ebooks like this should be encouraged. There's clearly more to the Kindle than meets the eye!

By the way, thanks to this ebook's inspiration I did some thinking...and I was able to use my Yahoo mail account with no problem, which is great because that's my primary email account.

It's about time someone put something like this out there for us! I've had my Kindle almost since it was released, and I absolutely love it! However, it takes time for people to learn all the tips and tricks and goodies and get the information out to the rest of us! This guy is knowledgeable and willing to share what he's learned. I'm so glad I stumbled across this! More, more, more!!!!

Stephen Windwalker makes the mysterious seem friendly and accessible. He greatly expands the usefulness of an already productive and worthwhile tool. I was pleased with my Kindle, but after reading "How to Use the Amazon Kindle", and applying a few of the applications presented therein, I take every opportunity to show it off to strangers.

I was skeptical at first about a reading device, but I am totally sold on this way of reading. I use it for reading the Wall Street Journal and find it easier to navigate than the hardcopy; I find I like reading on the Kindle easier and more convenient. I can have multiple books in progress, and I never lose my place. I have been converted to the new way of reading.

Like many new Kindle users, I bought this "cool tricks" Kindle book on my first buying spree about 2 months ago. I reserved judgment on how useful it would be until now, giving myself a chance to both read the material and receive the very helpful free emails that the author offers as a bonus, if you choose to send him your email address. The very first tip that came through that I used, a tip on a free download, in one click repaid the cost of the initial "cool tricks" book. High energy author who is motivated to find a position in this new market, and why not? Someone's got to save time for the rest of us, and I appreciate it.

Yes, technically all the information contained therein could be found for free if one had enough time, but if I had that much time and energy, I could also eventually travel to libraries to borrow, and back to return, every time I wanted to read a title for "free". "Free" is not the primary motivation of Kindle users, it's convenience, and personally, I find this "cool tricks" Kindle guide a no-brainer, common sense investment. For a couple of dollars, you get the benefit of this author's many hours of beta-testing. What's to regret?
