| How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
For almost forty years, How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby has been the standard reference for couples trying to increase their chances of having the son or daughter they hope for. In this new edition of their classic book, Dr. Shettles and David Rorvik provide authoritative scientific studies and compelling anecdotal evidence demonstrating that the Shettles method continues to produce results unmatched by any other method. Dozens of testimonials confirm its ease of use and rate of success.
How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby explains the simple, at-home, noninvasive Shettles method and presents detailed steps to take to conceive a child of a specific gender. The properly applied Shettles method gives couples a 75 percent or better chance of having a child of the desired sex. Some researchers have reported success rates of up to 90 percent! |

The suggestions in this book worked for me and many other people I know 23 years ago. I bought it for someone who really wants to have a boy. I was thrilled to see that it has been updated and improved.

Well we started to use the methods in the book. My husband skipped right to the part on what to do to concieve the sex you want. I tried to read the whole book. There is just a lot of junk before you get to the good stuff. I won't be able to tell you if it worked or not though, we got pregnant before we got to try the methods.

We are getting ready to put this book into practice. There is a lot of history included, and it is interesting and well written. When you finally get to the method, it is easy to follow and well outlined. At 36 I learned a lot more about my body and how my cycles work by reading this book. With my second child I had to follow chart my BBT and it never really worked well since my cycles seemed so irregular. This book made it clear what to look for and I found out my ovulation is not as irregular as I had thought. So after two boys, we are almost ready to start trying for baby number three. I would love to have another healthy baby... but it would be nice if we had a girl. Be very careful to understand, you should want another baby - boy or girl- and this book may aid in tipping the scales toward one or the other. We will see...

I have not read the updated version, but my husband and I read the book 18 years ago and gave birth to a boy after having two girls. It's not a guarantee, but might help sway the odds. The book is prefaced with the warning that if you would be devastated to get the sex of child you were not trying for, don't even try. Very informative, and if the revised version is like the original, the chapter on myths is hilarious and worth the price of the book. Good luck to all.

I found this book not only interesting but it worked for me! As the book mentions, trying for a girl is a little harder and since I had recently lost a lot of weight, my menstrual cycle had become a bit irregular. However, after months of tracking and months of trying (as the book indicates for a girl starting with a certain number of days prior to ovulation and bringing that number down if it doesn't work), I found the magic day. We found out through chromosome testing that our baby is a girl! We have 2 boys already and this addition really completes our family! I have recommended this book to all my friends who really want one sex or another.

I followed this book to the T. We were trying for a girl after two boys. I thought since this method had worked with my mother and sister in conceiving boys, I was a shoo in if I followed it. And I did. We got pg the first month with a healthy baby BOY. Do not put all of your eggs in one basket. Even if you religiously follow the book, the odds are still pretty equal and you will feel like a fool for following a book and still getting the opposite gender!

This absolutely works... I had my baby girl I wanted after my wonderful little boy was born 3 yrs prior. Make sure to complete reading the whole book for best results. Good Luck ... and remember every child boy or girl is a blessing. This makes it fun (and for the adults, too).

We already have a beautiful little boy that we love but when we decided to try for #2 I wanted a girl to even out the house! The book was recommended to me by some friends and was easy to read and understand. We followed the plan with some help from Fertility Friend for charting and tracking my temps.
We found out last week...Its a girl! :) I can't believe it worked! :) I am so excited! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-14 16:05:12 EST)

"How to Choose Sex of Your Babay" is a very useful book. Dr.Shettles'methods are easy to practice. The book clearly explains what you should do when you aim for a boy or a girl. Everything you need to know is in there. Also, 'How to Choose Sex of Your Babay' covers why other methods for sex selection may not effective as of Dr.Shettles is. It's definitely an excellent how-to book for couples who want to select sex of your baby. I will follow his guidelines this coming new year. Hope it helps !!!

This particular sex selection method has worked for us three times. I was monitoring very carefully for ovulation each time. That is the key. We read the whole book before trying to concieve the first time. We both work in the medical field and the suggestions by Dr. Shettles made sense to us from a physiological perspective. We tried for a boy first just to see if it worked. Not only was I pregnant the first month, it was a boy. So we tried for a girl next. Same thing. Our third time we tried for a boy and got pregnant the first month with a boy. We want one more child and are hoping for a girl. We'll see. The bottom line with any sex selection method is that it has to make sense to you and you have to be willing to follow it closely, but most importantly be thankful when you have a child regardless of the gender. Any "natural" sex selection method only works about 80% of the time even when closely followed.

The book is very easy to understand and I enjoy reading it. The down side of it is that it is very small and most of the things that are in the book are obtainable from the internet. The vaginal mucus is somehow confusing. However, I hope the book will help me to have more chances of conceiving a boy next year (2008) after June. I also bought another book called Guarantee the Sex of Your Baby: Choose a Girl or Boy Using Today's 99.9% Accurate Sex Selection Techniques by Robin Elise Weiss. I will compare it with Dr. Shettles book.

I gave this book 3 stars because some of the information was indeed valuable. But the first 100 pages were completely irrelevant. Its called how to choose the sex of your baby yet he speaks of what aristotle thought. Who cares? History is wonderful and all but is it worth 100 pages?
The repetition comes in the chapters where it talks specifically how to try for a boy or a girl. It tells you to read both chapters no matter what you are trying for but repeats the same thing. Out of the 230 pages, i have a page and a half of notes. I recommend you borrow a copy of this from the library. It honestly isnt worth adorning your shelves with. Such a book is naturally biased toward favor of the technique. But readers should look up "Shettles Method" on the web and read up on more critical evaluations. For example, "...adherence to these methods may decrease your chances of conception, without improving the odds of having a child of the gender of your choice. Note that caffeine has been linked to miscarriage, and douching has been linked to tubal damage and infertility." and "...in the New England Journal of Medicine, that has shown that 'for practical purposes, the timing of sexual intercourse in relation to ovulation has no influence on the sex of the baby.'"
You can also find out the details of the method (such as a simple chart) before investing in the book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-11 02:38:47 EST)

We have [...]girl and wanted to have another baby before she got much older. I picked up the book on a whim and decided that it wouldn't hurt to read it. The book is so full of information that it does get hard to follow at times. But if you read the book completely it WILL ALL MAKE SENSE. I learned (A LOT) about the physiological side of conception and so following the method was not difficult. We tried for a boy and we found out at the end of December that it is A BOY! Since then I have shared much insight contained in the book, with friends and strangers alike. And I have found out that many people either know someone that was successful with the method or were successful themselves. It is "easier" to try for a boy but I would feel confident following the method for either gender. I suggest the book to anyone who's planning to have a baby, regardless if they have a preferred gender or not.

I felt that this book was for the most part an easy read. There were times that I felt that it was hard to stay with the writer, but mainly because I was anxious for the facts. My advice is be patient. If you do want to increase your chances for having either sex then you really need to read the whole book. Although you could skip ahead to the chapter that explains how to try to conceive each sex, but honestly you will be missing a bunch of helpful tips throughout the book. We are hoping it will increase our chances of the sex gender we'd like to have first this Spring! Be sure that you will be happy with either sex. Do NOT depend on this book to work miracles. The book merely tells you how to increase your chances of having either sex.
Good luck! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-11 02:38:47 EST)

It wasn't the most entertaining of books, but heck I didn't read it to be entertained. I wanted a girl and this was my last chance. We tracked for 4 months and we not only got pregnant immediately, but we have verified that we are expecting a girl in May. I have friends who tried the method, but not with the level of committment that it takes. They were unsuccessful and admitted to not following it precisely. So if you really want to choose the gender of your baby then it is worth the read and try. You never know.

We have three wonderful boys but we still wanted a little girl to complete our family. I had read other books and understood that the sex of the baby is all in the timing in most cases. I bought this book, read every single page cover to cover and practiced all the things it said to do. I charted my cycle for 4 months and then we began trying. We did everything the book instructed us to do and I became pregant immediately after we started trying. A sonogram later confirmed the baby was a little girl and our dreams were fulfilled. This book definitely works if you are willing to follow all the instructions and not get lazy about what you need to do. Your chances of having a boy are greater then having a girl. Having a girl requires a little more effort to nail down the timing but the end result is well worth it. I would recommend this book to anyone trying for either a boy or a girl.

This book is great. Indepth. Goes into history of sex selection and how it works now. I am going to try for a girl and will update again later. I currently have a boy (not by using sex selection) However, if you go through the steps on how to have a boy, it is accurate based on timing etc. Regarding the single star that this book has gotten, it is inaccurate. You have sex often when trying to have a girl to lower the sperm count (men have more male sperm, this lowers the male sperm and gives the female sperm a better chance) 2) regarding the pill, the doctors recommend you get your period atleast once. Inorder to properly select the sex of your baby, you must plan and have "practice" months to determine your time of ovulation-only then can you use sex selection. You can not do that in only one month---especially for a girl. and either way, I would want to wait atleast 6 months to make sure that all the chemicals and sideeffects of the pill are out of my system before trying for a baby.

What a well-written book! Reading Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" before I read this book helped in understanding the signs of fertility and proper charting of these signs.
In response to the reviewer who was upset that Dr Shettles advises going off the pill 6 months prior...her doctor is right, a woman may ovulate as early as one month after discontinuing the pill; this would allow her to successfully acheive pregnancy as early as her first cycle after coming off the pill. What it is VITAL for the reader to understand (by reading the preceding chapters and not just skipping ahead), is that Dr Shettles recommends waiting at least six months SO THAT A WOMAN'S CYCLE RETURNS TO A NORMAL, SOMEWHAT PREDICTABLE STATE. Only then, can she and her partner hope to practice natural sex pre-selection. Most of our physicians are only concerned with helping us to acheive pregnancy, be it of a boy or girl; any practicer of Dr Shettles' method should be thrilled to have either one...but if you'd like to swing the odds one way or the other READ THIS BOOK!!! It is great to have a new edition of this terrifically useful guide to sex selection which has been in use for many years. My husband and i used it four years ago to conceive a boy and have just succeeded in using the method for a girl. We first read about it in Family Circle Magazine and Reader's Digest some years ago. We now consider our family complete. The advice in this book is the best. Two other couples we know have used it successfully as well. Thank you Dr. Shettles!

I bought this book just for fun but to also maybe try out the techniques to increase our chances of having a girl. I got it the other week and was bored with it immediately. It got a little interesting when it talked about the philosophies of old on female and male reproduction but soon went on to be boring again. Also, it said that when you want to try for a girl you are to have sex everyday. However, when you are trying to conceive doctors recommend every other day because if you do it too often the male sperm count gets too low to be effective. It also stated that if you are on the pill and you discontinue it you should wait 6 months before you even begin to start trying to conceive. I am on the pill and my doctor said that once I discontinue it I should have at least one period on my own before we start trying to conceive. This book is a waste of a good book, money and your time.
