Excellent and extremely helpful book in understanding humane, positive dog training. Couldn't recommend this enough. In fact, I recommend ALL her books, especially For The Love of A Dog, and The Other End of The Leash.

(Hide Review...)  Become a Better Pack Leader With Patricia McConnell
Reviewer Permalink
I sometimes worry that I'm not succeeding at being a strong, benevolent pack leader. This worry led me to Patricia McConnell's book, How to Be the Leader of the Pack . . . and Have Your Dog Love You For It. After reading the synopsis and reader reviews, I felt like this book could help me with my desire to be a better pack leader.

This 16-page book covers 12 must-read topics:

1. Petting
2. Body Blocks
3. Look Aways
4. Lie Down and Stay
5. Wait at the Door
6. Four on the Floor
7. Teach Off
8. Integrate Obedience Into Your Day
9. Leaders Are In the Lead
10. Play
11. A Word About Food
12. Alpha Roll-Over ... Don't Do It

I found McConnell's advice to be practical and realistic, and took away helpful tips from each of these sections. Tonight, I've successfully "body blocked" my dog's attempts to use her front paws to lean on the couch as she stands on her hind legs. I've also started making my dog sit (the only command she knows right now) prior to petting her.

This book is concise, interesting, and at 16 pages, I read it in less than 30 minutes. I highly recommend How to Be the Leader of the Pack . . . and Have Your Dog Love You For It to puppy owners and anyone interested in polishing their dog's manners.

This little pamphlet should be given out with every adopted dog! While only 16 pages it's a great intro into beginning training and how to care for your dog. It's especially useful for people who can't or won't read a longer book like my husband.

A tiny little pamplet 8" X 5" with 14 pages. There was very little information found in this. But I noticed in almost every thing I read that to train your dog you need a large amount of treats to feed them for every time they move in the direction you were hoping they would. It sounds like you would have to work with them for a lot of time and would have a pretty fat pooch when you managed to get him trained in the basics, and you would have to have him all to yourself to accomplish this. In other words it would be about as cheap to send him to obedience school. I was not pleased at all with these books/pamplets.

Since it's short, sweet and so easy to understand, this book should be given to anyone and everyone who has a dog in their home. Seriously. I'm tempted to buy handfuls of these books and hand them out at the nearby dog park, where it's crystal clear which dogs own their people and vice versa. This book made a big difference after I brought my newly adopted fullgrown pit/lab mix home from the shelter. After a few weeks of struggling with him, I read this book. I could clearly see his wily and subtle ways of being the dominant one in the house and I asserted myself accordingly as the pack leader. Everything was easier after that.

This book saved my relationship with my two "kids" - it is written in language that is very easy to understand and presents principles in a way that anyone can appreciate and practice. I believe that reading this book taught me how to live with and relate to my four legged family in a way that truly allows us to live together in a harmony that we had not known previously and cherish every day since. Highly recommended for anyone who has a canine companion, whether it is a new relationship or one that has gone on for a while but has become a strain for any member of the family.

I enjoyed this practical little booklet, but it is twice as useful and entertaining if you read it aloud and substitute the word "man" [or a man's name] for the word "dog" [or a dog's name]. I gave it to my sister when she adopted one of my foster dogs, and we had a jolly and educational time reading it "both ways". Anything by Patricia McConnell is a "must-read" for those of us who love interaction with our dogs!

Reviewer Permalink
There is definitely some helpful tips in this little booklet on how to convey to your canine companions that you are the leader of their family pack, but most of it was information I'd already come across in other puppy rearing/dog training books. The information was simple and to the point, so if all you want to know about is how to be the leader, then this book is for you. I think I would have liked this book much better, however, if there had been a more thorough discussion of what's going on in a dog's mind in respect to what they're looking for in a leader, how to tell if your dog is truly trying to lead you (and not just taking advantage of a leadership void), etc. When ordering this book, I hadn't paid any attention to how many pages it contains, so I was expecting more.

As a professional dog trainer, Patricia McConnell's booklets are one of the materials that I hand out to clients. Unlike some of the force-based methods that have unfortunately made a resurgence lately, McConnell clearly (and often humorously) explains how to establish leadership without using physical force. Her writing style is straightforward and down-to-earth, which makes digesting the information effortless. Anyone looking for an in-depth book should purchase The Other End of the Leash by McConnell as well, but this booklet is an excellent resource in and of itself, and I highly recommend it along with all of her other publications.

Dr. McConnell has many little things you can do to establish yourself as pack leader. The only surprise for me was that she does not mention the walk. I have found that long, disciplined walks (loosely at heel) work wonders in demoting a dog that thinks he is the boss. You can allow fun walks too occasionally, but the regular discipline of following the leader is the habit you want to establish.

Every dog owner should read this booklet.

I'm an experienced dog owner who just adopted a [..]rescue dog. I decided to go "back to school" and look for some new books to help me train my new dog. I bought three books by this author:
1) How to be the Leader of the Pack...And have your dog love you for it
(a WONDERFUL short primer on having happy relationships with dogs)
2) The Other End of the Leash
(a full-length book about communicating with dogs-- GREAT!!!!)
3) Family Dog Training
(a very readable, clear, wonderful book on training dogs gently-- it works!!)

This is the best author I have found for people who want to learn how to train their dogs through understanding effective canine-human communication. Read her books and you will never again try to train your dog through "leash pops", etc.. What a breath of fresh air! Finally, training methods you can feel really, really good about. Fun for dogs and humans. I can't say enough good things about Patricia McMillan!

She has some good points for the beginning dog trainer, however she is not right about pinning dogs down. They do in fact do it in the wild, it is NOT always by choice as she states in her book. When looking at books, be critical as everyone has their own point of view. Stubborn thinking dogs like the livestock guardian breeds need pinning at times, though it's usually through play to maintain your dominant possition.
Otherwise she is good.

I love this book(let). It's a book that any dog owner will actually read, since it's easy, short, and the concepts are clear. And it introduces the handful of concepts you *need* to know if you're going to have a successful & rewarding relationship with your dog.

The rescue group I'm involved with gives this to every potential adopter to get them prepared mentally for dog ownership - that's how I got my hands on this. I thought I knew the ropes, but little book clarified things for me, and made me more effective in implementing what I knew. Terrific.

McConnell gets to the point, explains what she's talking about and covers the true basics for dog ownership and leadership. All of her books are good - but this one is especially terriffic because of it's brevity and focus.
I believe if everyone that adopted a dog would read this book we would have many less stray and surrendered dogs in the local shelters.
