The first chapter claims that the tutorials in the book can be used for any image editing program but the tutorial often involves using Photoshop scripts. So with that in mind, if you use another program it may be difficult to convert the tutorial steps to fit whatever image processing program you use.
Despite that, the authors really know their stuff. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-04 07:11:36 EST)

Very nice "How To" book, however, many of the techniques CAN be sourced from the Web. My biggest critique and is the scripts included in the CD - if you don't get them up and running (Mac OsX users) half the tutorials won't work. THey're supposed to make it easier for you, but not if they don't work...other than that, good to see some of the techniques Hi-Fi uses. 3 out of 5

I've just started coloring a comic, and I wish I had purchased this book before I started! It contains SO MUCH information, from scanning, to prepping your drawings for coloring, to flatting and finally to coloring itself. Sure, some of this may be in the Internet here and there, but never in one place and never, ever explained so well.
In addition to the valuable information on coloring, he also includes some invaluable scripts from Hi-Fi, which removes the tedious process of setting up your channels, etc., as well as a script for color holds and finishing up the page. All I can say is this is the best resource I've found on computer coloring for comics. In fact, it was so good, I ordered copies for two friends. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-04 05:24:58 EST)

This book is an excellent resource. The authors are talented colorists, but more importantly for the reader, they're people with real experience teaching others how to color comics professionally.
There are a hundred ways to do ANYTHING in photoshop -- what I love about _Hi-Fi Color for Comics_ is it stops to explain WHY they do it the way they're showing. I've colored a lot of comic pages and other illustrations over the years, and have my own way of doing things. I'm changing a lot of my approaches for the better because of this book. The book covers Hi-Fi's "house style" of coloring, but the meat of the book is valuable for all styles of colorists. You've got to flat well, you've got to produce good backed-up blacks, all the rest. No matter what coloring style you're shooting for, my bet is you're going to pick up some valuable tips from this book. And finally we have the included cd -- it's not just some sample files for practice and a couple custom brushes, it has a number of complicated photoshop actions that are serious high-quality time-savers for colorists. Any one of the actions would be worth the cover price alone. Just starting out? This book will tell you what you need to know. Experienced colorist? Boost your productivity, get this book. Having perused many books on animation, illustration, etc. and having purchased a few I thought this was pretty cool. The coloring style may not be for everyone, but the book is helpful in many areas. I thought the quality of the work was not as good as GURU's book, and I would recommend that book over this one. That being said, you may be able to pick up different points from each, as I did.

There are a lot of books dedicated to Photoshop, for improving photos. Which is understandable since that's what Photoshop is mainly for. There are few books that go deep into the art possibilities. (and I have quite a few Photoshop books).
This book is heavy into comic related art, mainly, how to color comics and really make them pop. But don't let that stop you if you are not into comics. This book helps with taking simple line art and making into a good pieces of art or graphic quality. It covers scanning, stitching, layout, and it full of coloring tips from end to end. Forget 2-dimensional line art. This book takes a basic line art and shows you how to make it fantastic visually. There are so many ideas here, it will keep you busy for quite sometime. Highly recommended. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-14 07:31:14 EST)

This is the only guide you will ever need to learn to color comics!!!! It's amazing. i can't believe that Brian & Kristy would reveal their secrets like this!!! They explain everything step by step. They even have homework assignments to go along with the lessons. It's like having my own private tutor. It even comes with software to help you learn the techniques better. I really can not express how much I love this book, and how simple it is for even a novice like me to understand. They even have a web forum where you can post any questions you have and receive extra help.
This book is THE best Amazon purchase I have ever made. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-11 07:29:04 EST)

There are few books in my life that I can truthfully say came at the right time. Hi-Fi Color For Comics: Digital Techniques for Professional Results is that book for me.
I have been a Photoshop user for about 14 years. From the begining my purpose in using Photoshop was to color comic books. I have used it for many other thing over the years, but I keep coming back to the inevitalbe truth that all I want to do is color comic books. In the last 14 years I have for the most part been self taught. I've gotten very good in the use of Photoshop, but as far as comic book coloring goes I felt incomplete in my skill-set. Hi-Fi Color For Comics changed that for me. With it's straight forward approch to instruction, great examples, and "secrit" tips. I feal like my leaning of Photoshop as it pertains to coloring is complete. In addition the great extras like the Photoshop scripts have been a huge timesaver in my workflow. As a nice topper there is a companian web forum tied with the book for future help and exchanging of ideas. All in all, without question, if you a aspiring comic book colorist, or even if you've just started getting work. Hi-Fi Color For Comics will round out your skills, and give you the tools needed to help you grow your business. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-17 07:30:17 EST)

This is a great book. When I wanted to learn about computer coloring back in '95, I had the pleasure of corresponding with or talking directly to two influential individuals in the industry. The first was Brandon Petterson and the second was Brian Miller. After finding out that he was from my neck of the woods (the midwest-St. Louis to be exact), we had a very pleasant conversation at Wizard World Chicago.
The Millers touch on so many points, from hardware and software to the coloring process to the business of coloring and working as a freelancer. This is a valuable resource to any colorist who is serious about getting into the industry. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-15 07:24:12 EST)

I'm hard pressed to find anything wrong with this book. The lessons are thorough and well put together in my opinion. It's the first book that showed me what can be done in "Screen Mode" for gradients and brushes. This book also goes into steps for the fundamentals of rendering a figure or background scene(knowing the basic shapes in a scene or figure). For anyone new to coloring comics...this book will not waste your time if you give yourself time to practice.

This is a GOOD Book!!
No a GREAT book on HOW to color comics, line art etc. It addresses the mechanical, production and well as asthetic side of rendering and coloring sequential art. The chapters are laid out in an effecient manner. And make lots of sense in the way the subjects and areas of concentration are sequentially laid out. The only problem I'm having is gettig a handle on the "Color Holds" section of the book. But the CD-ROM is FULL of actions, scripts that are REALLY helpful. Tips, techniques that I learned on my own through trial & error, experimentaion and advice from others are all laid out once the actions, scripts and brushes are loaded on your computer. Other than that my work has improved 100%!!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-04 04:55:58 EST)
