When I first started to read the possible causes and the affirmations I was skeptical but when it was working I was surprised and delighted that I do have the power to heal my body and mind.

If I could give no stars, I would. I'm putting this review on each of Louise Hay's titles to warn people who fall into believing that this is a caring, compassionate person. I met her recently at an event and was about to compliment her on one of the books her company publishes that Dr. Dyer wrote for children. Louise Hay was so incredibly rude to me before I even got to open my mouth that I was shocked. The woman seemed to be only about capitalism, power and ego and, though I had been a previous customer of her publishing company, I will NEVER purchase anything by them again nor will I recommend them. I will not give money to someone so ill-behaved, let alone someone who's telling others to be nice when they haven't learned that lesson themselves. Louise Hay, I hope someone on your team shares this with you. You should be ashamed of yourself for being so nasty!

By contrast, I have dealt with the people at Sound's True a zillion times and all of them are as nice as can be and behave in accordance with their products. I spoke with their people at the same event (and others before it) and they were all lovely.

And, no, I do not work for or am in any way compensated by Sound's True. I simply people should know the truth about who practices what they preach and who doesn't. In my opinion, Hay's behavior was one step down from Cruella De Ville. If you're shocked reading that, imagine how shocked I was experiencing it from her.

This book is pretty interesting. It has a nice page by page set-up where you can look up all your illnesses by alphabetical order and it will tell you what underlying (emotional/mental) cause is going on and also what affirmations to say to help heal that dis-ease.

I did find what it said about my particular health problems to be very interesting. But wow - if I work on all my health issues, I'll be saying a dozen or more affirmations every day! Maybe it's better to start with just one or two at a time, and see how it goes.

I can't say whether it really will help you heal. But it's interesting, at the very least.

I bought my first copy of this book several years ago. My kids and I loved it. At some point I passed it on to my daughter, and when I asked for it back, she was too attached to it to let it go for good. Time for a second copy. I am a psychotherapist and use it with my clients--a number of them have gone out and bought their own copy after hearing the uplifting affirmations and my family's positive experience with them. Don't wait another minute to order your own copy! Enjoy!

Reviewer Permalink
This book is not narrative, as the excerpt would suggest. There are less than 7 pages, counting the introduction, written in narrative style. Most of this book is affirmations. For example, if you cut yourself, you are supposed to affirm, "I create a life filled with rewards." For something serious, such as an impacted wisdom tooth, the affirmation is: "I open my consciousness to the expansion of life. There is plenty of space for me to grow and to change."

I am a licensed alternative medicine health care provider, so I certainly have a strong belief in the power of the mind to heal. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone.

(Hide Review...)  An Excellent Reference Guide for Self-Healing
Reviewer Permalink
This is quite simply the best seven-dollars you could ever spend. This work is certainly not unique; but the handy size and format of this book makes it the perfect resource for anyone interested in self-healing -- or anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the mind-body connection and the "body-metaphor" for health and wellness. I have used this reference with amazing results in my personal life, in clinical practice, and I still refer to it during telephone consultations.

If you are not familiar with mind-body, or holistic, medicine, scanning the tabular information is eye-opening and mind-expanding. Apply it honestly to your life and you will be amazed -- of course, it will be much easier to apply these things to others! Although we don't want to acknowledge the underlying cause of most of our problems, just reading the "Possible cause," and corrective, affirmative thought pattern is often enough to stimulate a change.

This is one of those books that we own several copies of, and have given several away. This book, or any of Louise Hay's books containing this information, is an important part of any library. This is a very useful and helpful book -- a valuable resource for healing!

For many years, I have listened to tapes and CD's by Louise Hay. She has greatly helped me in her healing affirmations on the tapes and CD's. So I decided to buy some of her regular books to read on health and healing. For me stress, worry, and overthinking has caused many of my health problems. When I read this book on the reasons for the disease, pain, etc, I realized more reasons for the pain, etc. that I never thought of before and why it is so very important to LET GO of negative thoughts and anger and more as these cause illness. This is a compact book, and I keep it next to my bed so I can look things up when needed. I already own the CD version of Heal Your Life and have been so impressed with this as well, I am thinking of ordering this one as well since it gives even more detail to why we get sick in the first place. At any rate, this book is a keeper and one that I will refer to over and over. Thank you Louise for your many years of helping people and also for this wonderful and revealing book!

This book is simply a list of ailments and what they represent, plus a little couple of sentances to say to help "trick" yourself into changing your thoughts. For example, it might say "hurt wrist - represents having a hard time coping with life - say: I love my life and I can deal with anything." (This example IS NOT in the book. I came up with this one myself and it has no truth to it. But you get the idea.)

I was first introduced to Louise L. Hay and this deceptively slim book about 8 years ago. I was so amazed by the accuracy of the descriptions of emotional and mental causes for my own physical "dis-eases" (well put indeed, for that's exactly what it is)I bought a copy immediately. It didn't take long before I shared the info with someone and ended up giving them my copy - a trend I have delightedly continued for years! I keep a few on hand for that very reason, because once people look through and read the causes and affirmations and I see that they are ready to make that connection and heal themselves, I can't resist just giving them the book!

The thing about this information is that while it might seem simple, it's very powerful. If someone isn't ready to take responsibility for their own well being or own up to their issues and blocks, this will push buttons.

I had a family member once react badly to the entire concept, mistaking the concept to mean Louise Hay is blaming people for their health problems. It's not about blame or any such negative intention. It's about understanding the undeniable (in my opinion of course) connection between our state of mind, our emotional body and our physical body. Once you learn to recognize that the physical symptoms we manifest are ways that the body is helping to bring our attention to something that needs healing, those symptoms become calls to empowerment. And once you face an issue and work through it to heal, your life unfolds in grace and understanding.

This is not just new age mumbo jumbo or psychobabble. It might be a small, thin volume, but I have called upon the help and wisdom within more times than I can count. It's incredibly easy to tote it around, but I would advise having more than one handy because once you share it with friends and family, they'll want one too.

There are many facets to healing and many paths to wellness. This book is like a flashlight of wisdom and support.

Another enlightening book I read is called the T_r_u_t_h about C_a_f_f_e_i_n_e. After finishing it last night I woke up the next day and made an important decision. I decided that I did not like how coffee made me feel or what it could do to my fertility, and that was the end of a decade-long love affair with coffee. I told my body that it was free of all chemical addictions and that it would feel healthy and balanced without it. It worked.

Dis-Ease is simply the body talking to us, giving information about changes that can be made, if we choose to do so. This powerful little book provides detailed information about body parts and conditions, linking them back to a particular emotional state, then providing a mantra to assist with healing.

I find it to be a powerful resource in my coaching and healing practice.

I have given away several copies of this book and reference it in my presentations and small retreats. Similar to another reviewer with a charismatic background, I was surprised that I now recommend this book! However, in my case I found the ideas in this book (but not necessarily in all her books) to be very consistent with faith, positive confessions and words that "create." We have a God-given creative ability that can be blocked by what is in our unconscious. Our unidentified/unaddressed negative thoughts or emotions (hurt, anger, bitterness) counteract everything positive that we read/believe in our conscious mind. When you address those things, all of you is on the same page, and it's very powerful!

Most people would agree, Christian or not, that loving other people (and yourself) is a good thing. This book gives a quick list of physical symptoms & related thoughts you may have in your unconsious that are not based in love (fear, anger, grief, etc.). The next steps are up to you -- to use things like journaling, retreats, counseling, etc. to change those beliefs. I find asking myself questions and responding in a journal using my non-dominant hand to be particularly helpful to find out what's really in my unconscious.

Other great books include anything by Dennis, Matt or Sheila Linn. I've gotten a lot out of Healing Our Beginnings (or if you can find a used copy of Remembering Our Home that's even better).

Reviewer Permalink
I found out about Louise Hay's books several years ago. This famous "little blue book" has become a regular reference book in my life. I literally own 3 of them, so they are convienently scattered around the house for quick reference.

Louise Hay's theory of healing physical and mental pain is that every pain and illness that we have has some root in our mental belief system. It is important to read the text in this book, because following the process is the key to making this work for you. Then, you understand how to use the handy reference guide. There are three columns in the guide: the physical or mental problem, the probable cause (the mental or emotional thought) and the New Thought or affirmation to replace the old and help the healing process.

Hay recommends three main points to make this process work for you;

1. It is important to not judge yourself or feel guilty for your physical ailment or pain.

2. It is important for you to "be willing to release the need for the issue".

3. Then, find the corresponding affirmation to help heal your body.

I've always been surprised when I have a pain and I look up the emotional and mental thought behind it. It always relates to my life in some degree. I easily blame myself for my ailments, so I need to remind myself to not feel guilty about contributing to the problem. I just step back and work on allowing to let the problem go and then recite the affirmation in my mind.

This has really helped me to get in touch more with my body and emotions. I can see how I can help ease my pains and frustrations. It helps to relieve my anxiety when I have a physcial pain, such as a migraine or cramp.

I only gave this book 4 stars because I highly recommend that you purchase Louise Hay's full text, "You Can Heal Your Life". It goes into much more detail about Hay's life and this process. It also does include the handy guide of ailments, emotions behind the ailments and affirmations.

As a massage therapist I deal with the physical body on a daily basis, and one thing is for sure... the link between our physical and emotional state of being is very powerful.

If you are interested in learning more about this, Heal Your Body is the perfect introduction to this concept.. you will be able to look up ailment from anorexia to and earache, then see what various research has shown to be a link to this. Also included are affirmations which you can repeat to yourself when you feel the effects of the ailment, thus promoting a healthy thought pattern to replace the negative one.

This book is very simple, very straight forward, including a small introduction and testimonial by Hay which is also worth reading. I have loved this book, referring to it often, and have clients reaching for it all the time. A good addition to any holistic library.

(Hide Review...)  She Healed Herself of Vaginal Cancer
Reviewer Permalink
Author Louise Hay is a teacher, lecturer, and founder of Hay House Publishing. She contends that disease is caused by mental thought patterns, especially patterns of criticism, anger, resentment, and guilt. Festering resentments eat away at the self and can ultimately lead to tumors and cancers. Anger turns into things that burn, boil, or infect the body. A pattern of criticism can turn into diseases like arthritis, and guilt seeks punishment and leads to pain. In this book, Ms. Hay outlines hundreds of diseases and conditions, alphabetically, and the mental patterns that are associated with them, including each vertebrae of the spine. She has discovered these patterns through many years of study, her own work with clients, and her lectures and workshops.

She knows the power of healing by changing mental thought patterns firsthand: she was diagnosed as having cancer of the vagina several years ago. She was already a teacher of healing for several years, and saw it as an opportunity to practice what she preached. Despite knowing the power of replacing negative thought patterns with positive and affirming beliefs, she felt panic like most would at this kind of diagnosis. However, she felt that if she allowed the doctor to operate without changing the mental pattern that created it, the cancer would just come back. In fact, she believes that when cancer comes back, it's not because the doctor "didn't get it all", but because the individual never addressed the mental patterns that created the dis-ease in the first place.

In Ms. Hay's case, she had never acknowledged the deep resentment she carried for being raped when she was 5 years old and being battered as a child. As she says, we are often blind to our own patterns--even if we're healers or teachers.

Ms. Hay bargained with her doctor and asked for 3 months to work on the deep resentments and thought patterns that created her cancer. He grudgingly agreed, warning her that she was putting her life in danger. She began working immediately with a teacher to clear up her patterns of resentment, as well as working with a nutritionist to detoxify her body. Six months later, the medical profession agreed with what she already knew: she was completely free from any form of cancer.

She still keeps the original lab report as a reminder of how negatively creative she could be.

I have to admit, I never thought I would recommend this book to anyone. My first husband was a Charismatic minister who believed that words were powerful and creative, and taught this concept to his congregation. However, he contracted leukemia at age 28, and despite a lot of positive thinking and affirmations, he suffered physically and died. Entertaining the theory that he created his suffering, especially after believing in God, healing, and the power of words, made me mad. Very mad. I scorned Ms. Hay and her theories of blame.

So what changed my mind? I had a series of physical symptoms that I knew were connected to my beliefs and thought patterns. As a former Charismatic minister, I used to teach the same thing as my deceased husband. However, deep down, I don't think I really believed in co-creation, but just wished it were true--especially in the area of prosperity and "name it and claim it." After following a different spiritual path from the one in which I was raised and upon further metaphysical study and reading while working on my own thought patterns, I began to realize, deep down, that my thoughts were powerful and that there were mental and emotional correlations to my physical symptoms. It was then that I felt to give Louise Hay another try.

First off, let me say that Ms. Hay believes in taking full responsibility for your health without self-reproach of feeling guilty. The means NO BLAME. But if you're anything like me, especially one that struggles with guilt from being brought up in a fear-based religion, it's hard not to feel blame when exploring the ideas of metaphysical causation. Some people blame God or an evil entity for dis-ease, and others blame it on the environment, poor lifestyle choices or genetics. Ms. Hay doesn't believe in participating in self-loathing and self-blame when you get ill; this is yet another destructive thought pattern.

I bought Heal Your Body a few months ago, and I have to tell you, it's really helped me pinpoint issues I needed to acknowledge and work though. I was suffering sinus trouble, and sinus trouble supposedly correlates to being irritated by one person--someone close. I began to look at the fact that I held unacknowledged resentment towards my Autistic son because of the arduousness of dealing with his behaviors, as well as wishing my situation was other than it was. What mother wants to acknowledge she may resent her son on some level--especially a precious 4 year old with Autism? Yet, this is what becoming responsible for myself and my health entails: ruthless self-examination without self-judgment and self-blame. Then, it's possible to actually work on the root of the resentment, see where I was resisting reality and wishing it to be other than it is, and changing my mind and negative thought processes.

Needless to say, after a few months of working on it, the sinus trouble disappeared. (And it was plaguing me for many months.) I've had this work for me with other ailments, as well.

If anything, this book is a great starting point for examining our beliefs and thought patterns and observe if there is truth to Ms. Hay's correlations. If it doesn't seem to fit, sit with it awhile. Be honest with yourself. Allow yourself to explore the idea that it's possible. You may find some surprising insights into your health and your life, and begin on a path to a level of health that you never imagined possible.

As an open minded skeptic, I am ever on the lookout for a scam, but I cannot find it here. As I refer my mundane afflictions to Ms. Hay's guide, I can't disagree with what I find listed. I have tried to trick this little book, but I can't. And so I am left wondering, to which ancient form of medicine would like something like this point? I have to think there is more, ancient, wisdom available. Yet, this is an amazing start and let's face it, exptremely affordable!

(Hide Review...)  Creating Our Illness???
Reviewer Permalink
As an inspirational speaker for the chronically ill, and one who can speak first hand about chronic illness, I patently refuse to endorse Louise's books. While I find her very insightful and spiritual, I have a hard time "blaming" people for their own illnesses, particularly my two nieces who were born with Cystic Fibrosis and had accumulated no time on earth in which to develop negative emotions that would have been expressed through illness.

In her book, Louise asks us to take responsibility for events, that quite frankly, we often have no control over. One man I know with Multiple Sclerosis became paralyzed within five years of his diagnosis. What HE CAN control is his reactions to this event, and he is still one of the world's premier oceanographers and has a wonderful wife and child. He has also given back and become a mentor to many disabled children.

I teach people to make to change the things that they can change and accept the things they can't. I'd much rather see people living fulfilling and wonderful lives--making the most of themselves--rather than blaming themselves for their illness, and wondering why they aren't getting better. There are some illnesses to which there is no cure.

(Hide Review...)  Dog-eared volume held together with tape!

This little blue book has been a constant companion over the past several years. This is apparent when you see the dog-eared, scotch taped book that might be laying around anywhere in my house. It never seems to stay on the shelf where I could easily locate it! Someone is always touting it here and there as they check up on the little "chronic ailments" that crop up from time to time. "Why do you supposed I broke the fingernail on THAT finger?" "You know that is the same vertebra that keeps going out - let's look it up and see what your body is telling you" or "You know our whole family seems to favor heart disease....we're always fighting melancholy and depression." I used to get calls from family and friends to "look up" what's happening with their various ailments. Now most of them have their own volumes. The more you understand from this book, the more you can see the patterns of communication your body is using to get you to "wake up" and change your thoughts and expectations. Louise Hay is truly a great pioneer in this effort to enlighten us about how it is really true - "As a man thinketh, so is he". I highly recommend this book and the doorway it opens into understanding how each of us can become increasingly accountable for the level of health we choose to enjoy. Most importantly, I'm grateful for the understanding that you will receive MORE of what you FOCUS on. When you think about the aches and pains - you receive an abundance of those very things! It's important to remember, as you get older, to refrain from "scuffing your feet along" and pick 'em up and put 'em down with vigor and intention! I love feeling like a powerful contributor to my own good health by seeing myself well and whole and then aligning my behavior to that deeply held vision! I am grateful for Louise sharing her insights and experiences. The affirmations are great and "cut through the confusion" about "how do I change this thought!"

(Hide Review...)  A great guide for finding the causes of symptoms
Reviewer Permalink
This is a wonderful book for help in finding the causes to our physical symptoms. If you believe that you are in control of your own life and your own body, this book can be very helpful in getting to the root of those symptoms we all have from time to time... The aching back and the hurt thumb to cancer and other serious diseases. I must admit that I've never read the text portion of the book (it's the smaller section) but the larger encyclopedic section I utilize often. I sometimes disagree with the authors suggestions, but even in cases like this, I find the book helpful for getting on the right track.
