Heading Home with Your Newborn : From Birth to Reality

This comprehensive guide for new parents finding themselves overwhelmed dealing with the reality of parenting provides "parent-tested, pediatrician-approved" advice to allay their fears. Written in a compassionate yet authoritative tone by two moms who are also pediatricians, this guide covers a wealth of topics that often prove daunting in the first eight weeks of a child's life. Starting with "Into the Mouths of Babes" (the trials of breastfeeding) and "What Comes in Must Come Out" (a discussion of "pee and poop") and moving on through "Fever: Trial by Fire" and "Seeing Yellow: Jaundice," this guide offers sound advice that will enable parents to feel confident about their parenting skills. Hints on daily living, sleep patterns, crying, the art and science of diapering, and traveling with a newborn are also provided.

For the price and quality, it is good for new moms or anyone feeding their baby. The only thing I would change is to have more cushion on the seat.

This little book is great! My MIL gave it to me and at first glance, I thought it was too basic and not likely to be that helpful. To my surprise, I read it the week before I was due and was so glad I did. It really goes over all of the basics and tells you what you don't know, but also, it was oddly reassuring to me because I discovered all that I did know! I now give it as a gift. It is definitely worth buying/reading.

The title is a little cheesy- but for first time parents, this book gives an informative, and entertaining overview of their newborn. I have nieces and nephews, but have never taken care of a newborn, and this book covers a lot of things I would have never thought about. It takes away a lot of worry so that you're not calling other parents or your doctor every couple of days. It's good for both moms and dads.

I read half a dozen books before I had my first baby, and now that I'm expecting baby number two I realize that this is simply the only book I needed. Easy to read, very informative and it covers everything you need to know. It leaves you with a lot of confidence and enthusiasm about bringing your newborn home - it even approached the mysteries of breast feeding in a practical and non threatening way. GREAT BOOOK - super gift for someone expecting!

Reviewer Permalink
I read about this book in a Parenting magazine and immediately ordered it from Amazon. Written by 2 female pediatricians who are also moms, the book covers the first FOUR MONTHS of your baby's life. Chapters are organized by feeding, bathing, flying with your newborn, car safety, basic health concerns and more. The book is very easy to read, and the tone makes you feel you can care for your newborn and feel confident! My baby is due next month, and being able to prepare myself for some of the realities and know that many things are NORMAL and can be dealt with successfully is a huge relief. I recommend this book to every expectant mom I meet at my doctor visits!

As a future first time mommy who never babysat babies and never felt motherly, I was surprised to read this book and find out that I hadn't learned all that much from it. I felt kind of disappointed, wanting to find out more after putting it down. Maybe I'm too perfectionnist or want to know too much, but I felt like there was not enough information, not enough depth. I felt like I had learned all these things from my pregnacy books...which are not giving that much info I thought. I still liked it though and would recommend it but I personally will be on the lookout for a book with more coverage.

I read most of the popular baby books (I'm a voracious reader who desires to be know-it-all in private.) This book made me understand most of what you need to know those first few daunting months. Easy to read, and good for quick answers, it is still on our coffee table for easy reference.

I really liked this book more than any others I have. It is perfect for a first time parent, before the baby comes or shortly thereafter. I wish I had it before my baby was born. It has real practical advice in plain language and is not at all judgmental. It is best before the baby is three months though. I highly recommend it.

Reviewer Permalink
I normally read all the reviews before I buy/borrow a book. In this particular case, I chanced upon it at the library and it did not disappoint! I guess the bottom line is that raising a child is not supposed to be rocket science but it always helps to have an instruction manual so that one does not have to reinvent the wheel over and over again (or be at the mercy of all your relatives). With that said, this book conveys a lot of practical, weighed, information and portrays parenting as not only doable but rewarding when armed with enough basic skills to be confident. It provides step by step instruction, with detailed tips, but the book also encourages experimentation to address your child's particular whims. Although we are still looking for a pediatrician, I feel like I've already talked to two very reassuring ones in this book! I can't wait to try their suggestions when our baby comes home.

This book has been a great source of knowledge for me, I can definitely see myself referring back to this book a number of times. My baby is not here yet, but I am trying to soak in as much knowledge as I can. I like the layout of this book and also the way it is written. There is humor- so it is not a dry medical textbook. I would recommend it to any new parent out there !

My wife and I received this book from our pediatrician before our baby was born. Both of us have read through it and this review is a combination of both of our thoughts. I liked the book because it was easy to read, with large text and a lot of short sections; both of which make this a conducive read in the spare moments of caring for a baby. My wife did not like the conversational style used by the text, and found it harder to understand than other books on this topic matter. Both of us appreciated the short length of the book.

It is a good quick synopsis. A caring for your newborn cliff notes. They address all the major topics, deciphering cries, poop, bathing, diapering, sleeping, car safety, illnesses etc. If you are going to buy several books regarding your baby than you could do worse than to purchase this one. However, if you only want to purchase one book, get
what to Expect the 1st yr. They have an entire section devoted to newborn care. It basically gives all of the information that you could find in here. Plus, you are able to use it as a resource for more than just the first few weeks.

If you read only one book to help you prepare for your new baby, this should be it. It is straightforward and full of information, but not overwhelming or confusing at all. It does not waste a lot of space with excessive or redundent explanations or cutesy humor. My husband (who is a doctor) and I (definitely not a doctor) both love this book, and recommend it to every soon-to-be parent.

I am a first time mom and was very nervous about what I was going to do after I had my baby as far as taking care of it. Before I read this book I was very scared and nervous about whether or not I was going to know what to do. This book sets your mind at ease and breaks things down in layman's terms, it doesn't give you more information than you need, and it doesn't give you opinion based information. I recommend this book to the scared first time mom.

My husband and I used this book a lot when we first brought our daughter home. It saved a lot of "what ifs" and anxiety headaches about situations that arose during the first few weeks. It helped us decide when to call or not to call the pediatrician (for things such as how high a fever should be before you bring your child in to be seen). Unfortunately my daughter is 7 mos old now and the book doesn't focus on older infants, so it is no longer relevant. Regardless, this book is now my new baby shower present!

Most infant care books fall into two groups: those written by doctors and those written by moms. The books by doctors are usually dry and boring but are packed with information - lots of which you'll never need. The books written by moms are easier to read but are usually one sided - if you don't do things their way, you're a bad mother.

This book is written by two doctors who are also moms. They know what is best for most babies but they also know that new parents live in the real world - a world that doesn't always work out just like the text book says it should and that not all babies fit into a mold. In fun, short chapters they quickly tell you what you need to know to care for your newborn (0 to 4 months).

The book is an easy read and a great reference during the first, chaotic, sleep-deprived months of a baby's life.

This wonderfully down-to-earth book helped my husband and me tremendously! As first-time parents delerious from sleep-deprivation and still in shock over the entire experience - this book was a saving grace! At 4:00am when she won't stop crying or during calmer moments when you wonder if she can see you, you'll find this book incredibly handy. These two great pediatricians seem to know exactly what matters to brand new parents, and they relay their knowledge, tips and advice from the point of view of both MD's and as Mothers, which is so great. And they're wit and humor reminds you that this is all a wonderful thing, and that you need to relax and try to enjoy each moment. They are the first to admit to not being perfect parents, as such people do not exist. As a new mother just exiting the 'newborn' phase with our little girl (14 weeks old), I cannot recommend this enough. Also, this book was a gift from my wonderful Mother, a reference librarian!

We were given this book by a friend, and truly loved it. I kept it by our glider/rocker and would read pertinent sections as questions came up. It was short, specific, and easy to use. Loved the different sections, and found the advice and diagrams just perfect for first-time parents.

I also loved that this book was the ideal size for multi-tasking: I could read while feeding the baby, and didn't have to spend lots of time searching for a specific topic.

(Hide Review...)  Wonderful practical guidebook for new parents
Reviewer Permalink
There are people who already have a great depth of infant care experience when they have their first child--have changed so many diapers they can do it with their teeth, can get a onesie over a newborn's head without waking her, can swaddle a baby into immobility with a flick of the wrist. We are not those people. We needed help, and we found a lot of it here.

My husband and I both read this book cover to cover before we brought our son home from the hospital, and referred to it often afterward. It has terrific practical advice for the new parent, with informative illustrations--such as demonstrating how to get those cute new outfits on your infant when they have clearly been designed by someone who has never actually dressed a baby-- and is written in a casual, clear style that makes it easily readable and memorable. We went back to it often: "What colors of poop did it say were okay?" "What did it say about the difference between projectile spit up and vomiting?" (Asked as something ran down a wall two feet away.) "Is it possible the baby really wants to eat every 45 minutes?" We suspect its discussion of growth spurts saved our sanity, if not our lives.

This book focuses on the nitty-gritty of the new obsessions you'll have with the bodily functions and sleep habits of your new arrival, and how to balance them with your own. It is a cheerful, engaging, sympathetic and nonjudgmental guidebook, and we appreciated it tremendously in our early weeks home. Highly recommended.

The pediatrician that took care of my children is now taking care of their children, my grandkids. He is so nice to us and was kind enough to give this book to one of my daughters. I tried frantically to read this book some weeks after our first grandson was born. My two daughters and I have found this book to be so much help. It's the "NO NONSENSE" advice that cuts to the core of what you really need to know as new parents. Written by two mother peditricians, that have experience as mothers. They've done an excellent job bringing up the points that the most attention should be spent on during the early months of your babys life.
Alot of things have changed since I was a mother of babies. This book was great for me also to learn all the things that are now being taught "differently" than we did years ago.

I found this book to be very helpful to read to get my head around the changes about to occur as I neared the end of my pregnancy. It is reassuring that the authors are doctors, but it is their knowledge as parents and doctors that really offers the best advice. I liked the straightforward, non-medical way of writing, and the short chapters so that you don't get information overload like other books do. I used it a lot as a reference after we brought baby home, too, and was glad that I had read through it once before I was sleep-deprived. A very useful "user's manual" for baby.

This is a terrific resource for new parents. The authors are pediatricians and they discuss in detail feeding issues, including challenges of breastfeeding and info on formula and solid foods. They also cover detailed info about observing changes in stool and urine, cleaning both girl and boy babies, how to change a diaper, vomiting, spitting up, burping, gas, and lots of other lovely details that a new parent will encounter. Sleep behavior, medical issues, and safety issues are also covered. Intelligent information without guilt trips.

I have been working as a neonatal intensive care clinical pharmacist for the past 5 years and I learned a lot from this book! Instead of giving you a bunch of medical jargon, this book is written for real parents who don't have time to sort the day to day info from the worst case scenario stuff. It is very well written, to the point, and funny! I was able to read the whole thing after my baby was born and only skipped the chapter on formula (exclusively breast feeding). The authors seem very knowledgable about current recommendations of the AAP on many topics. A must have for new parents!!!
