Guess How Much I Love You (Guess How Much I Love You)

The American Booksellers Book of the Year nominee is available as a sturdy board book for the youngest of children. Little Nutbrown Hare wants to show Big Nutbrown Hare how very much he loves him - but love as big as his is very hard to measure!
All children want reassurance that their parents' love runs wide and deep. In Guess How Much I Love You, a young rabbit named Little Nutbrown Hare thinks he's found a way to measure the boundaries of love. In a heartwarming twist on the "I-can-do-anything-you-can-do-better" theme, Little Nutbrown Hare goes through a series of declarations regarding the breadth of his love for Big Nutbrown Hare. But even when his feelings stretch as long as his arms, or as high as his hops, Little Nutbrown Hare is fondly one-upped by the elder rabbit's more expansive love.

Anita Jeram's illustrations are bound to elicit an "aw" from even the sternest of readers; these loving rabbits are expressive, endearing, and never cloying. In turn, Sam McBratney tells a simple bedtime story of sweet familial love with humor, insight, and a delightful surprise at the end. Children and parents will love snuggling up for this one--a treat to be read again and again, just before the lights are turned out. (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1994 by Sam McBratney. Adorable story and illustrations. A must have for any nursery. But very young children will lose interest in it pretty fast because of the amount of text on each page and the fact that the pictures are pretty much the same on every page, and not brightly colored and bold. So not a BABY book. But still, who can resist the title alone??? Mom loves it even if baby doesn't yet.

Too annoying and choppy sounding to read aloud to a small child (if you want them to pay attention) ...I never bring it out any more, though it IS a sweet story.

I bought this when my daughter was 7 months old. She liked looking at the pictures, but simply couldn't sit through the entire book. I often found myself skipping pages to get to the end. I think maybe around a year she'll be able to sit through the entire thing.

This is a sweet little story about a little nut brown hare and a big nut brown hare. It is a story my child and I both enjoy. It is the whole book in it's entirety, not just a shortened version of the hardback as many boardbooks can be. My child loves when I substitute our names for the word 'hare'.

I have been reading this incredibly touching story to my daughter over the last three years which brings tears to our eyes by the time we reach the end; not because it is sad, but because it is such an emotional expression of love between a father and his child.

This is one of those children's books you keep and look forward to reading to your grandchildren one day.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

There are many wonderful books that show a mother's love for her child. This one is special because it features "Big Nutbrown Hare" who the child can view as a mother or father. (The text refers to him as a "he" making this book an especially good fit for dads.) Both the writing and illustrations are charming, and the lovely twist ending makes for a perfect bedtime story.

My wife and I both enjoyed reading this, almost daily, to our first child. He really latched onto the book, and my wife and I both identified as the parent bunny. (Who says it's not the dad?) This could have been hokey and saccharine, but it's fun and imaginative instead. A really good way to end a tough day for a tired toddler and frazzled parents.

Very similar to "The runaway bunny". In a world where children hear horrific crimes from mothers against thier own children, this is a sweet little oasis for a small child. We can't always shield our children from what they hear or see but we can emphasize our unfailing love for them. Give them hope to know they are important, and have a vital place in this world.

I bought this baby book based on the reviews and the fact that Guess How Much I Love You is one of my favorite children's books. The book does a nice job of asking enough questions to make a complete record for your baby without being overly burdensome. Some of the other books I looked at seriously asked what the weather was on the day you found out your were pregnant. Seriously, who would care about that? This baby book also gives great suggestions for a few pictures which is helpful--like the place to put a picture of you pregnant. I am very pleased.

I know many people love this book. I don't know why. We received one as a gift, and after reading it to my daughter, I was disturbed by the story. I felt sorry for the bunny whose parent invalidated his expression of love on each page. As many other reviewers said, it was a competition the adult wouldn't let the child win. This book contains a mean-spirited, misguided, sad, and disturbing message.

"Guess how much I love you" is a classic. The story is a simple dialog between a big rabbit (the parent) and a little rabbit (the baby), each professing and comparing the depth & "height" of their love for each other. We read this book almost every day to our infant daughter. She loves the watercolor illustrations & coos at the pictures. A lovely addition to a kid' book collection.

That's the most beautiful book for a young child that I know of. It perfectly expresses the mother's love. I enjoy reading it every night before my daughter goes to bed. I started to read it to her over a year ago when she was only two years old, and now she can read it with me. It has created a special bond between us. I highly recommend this book to any loving mother. In addition to that I also recommend a book series titled "Why Some Cats are Rascals ( Book 3)" containing lovely and inspiring stories for older children. My other recommendations go to:

(Hide Review...)  Feel-good book for parents; not appealing to kids
Reviewer Permalink
I think this is a classic example of a children's book written to appeal to adults. How wonderful it is, isn't it, that we have a book that not only helps to cultivate a kid's reading habit, but also expresses, on our behalf, how much we love our kids.

(1) The way it is written is not for kids

The fact of the matter is, the way this story is written is so cumbersome and tongue twisting, that a 2-year-old will have problem understanding some of the sentences and therefore the full meaning of the story. And stopping every other sentence to explain what it means simple takes lots of fun out of the reading. By the time a kid goes to 3 or 4 years old, they will know these sentence structures, but they will find the content of this book too simple and uninteresting.

Sure, lots of kid will like us to read this book with them, but I highly doubt that is because of the book's appeal to kids. It is more because of the affection that we subconsciously show when we are reading a feel-good book like this to our beloved angels. From this point of view, this book deserves some credit. But is a kid going to pick up this book himself and be fascinated by its content? Unlikely.

(2) The way it is drawn is not for kids.

I also do not quite like the style of the drawing in books like this. Why can't they put the proper pictures at the proper places besides the text to help kids understand the story? There is a reason why Disney is the biggest children entertainment industry in the world. Toddlers' brain and eyes are still under development. They see things differently from adults. The striking, highly contrasting and often exaggerating colors in a Disney-style cartoon may not look artistic, but it certainly contains a lot more information that a kid's eye can interpret immediately. The drawings in this book, while smoothing and appealing (I have no doubt it is drawn by a good artist, unlike the computer-produced mess-generated old-fashioned Disney stories) doesn't quite encourage kids to look at them in detail because the style is too subtle for a 3-year old.

(3) Maybe I am just ranting, but here is my humble opinion for parents and writers:

I understand this review is almost like ranting because frankly, I only decided to write this review after repeated failed attempts to get my 3-year-old interested in this book. (I actually obtained both the "board version" and the "big book".) This is still an above average book. I just feel like pointing out a few things that those glowing reviews don't talk about.

Your kid doesn't really need an "I love you" book to know that you love him/her. Just like we knowing our kids love us, our kids know we love them. By reading any book, I mean ANY BOOK, your affection will be shown to your kids. So go ahead and buy some other books that are more informative or more interesting (e.g. the how-to books, alphabet books, witches and princess stories), not just a book that aims to make the adults feel good about ourselves.

And come on, authors, I understand that after hundreds of years of children's book development, you guys need fresh ideas. I am sure a book like this appeals to the adult judges in a children' book contest, but this is not how a real kid's book should be written. Look at how many copies Harry Potter is selling. Can't we have something in-between, which is both meaningful and yet actually appealing to the kids?

"Little nutbrown hare who was going to bed, held on tight to Big nutbrown hare's very long ears. He wanted to be sure Big nutbrown hare was listening. "Guess how much I love you", he said.

As a preschool teacher I was very familiar with "Guess How Much I Love You". It was a favourite amongst the four-year-olds I teach from the time it was first published in 1994.
Then to my surprise, when I was 27-years old, my mother sent me a board book edition with the following inscription:

"Hey Becs, guess how much i love you, Love Mum"

She was living in Canada and I was living in Australia. I was so touched.
I am now 31 and have my own daughter who is 5 months old. As we sit together my daughter attempts to turn the pages as i read this book aloud to her. It now has a second inscription under the first:

"Hey *****, guess how much i love you, love Mum"

This is a truly touching story of a father bunny and baby bunny playfully expressing their love for each other. Maybe it was postpartum hormones, but I was moved to tears when I spotted it in the store with my newborn at my side. One reviewer described it perfectly, saying that it attempts to measure the immeasurable love parents feel for their children.
I know my now 6-month-old son does not understand it, but he gets excited when he spots the cover. He listens to my voice, looks at the pictures, and grabs at the cover (no doubt in hopes of chewing it!). My husband and I have made it part of our bedtime ritual, with all three of us lying together and reading the story. I highly recommend it to parents and children of all ages!
