I got these today and I am wondering why none of these reviews say that it is actually a flip book and not actual flashcards.?

Annoyed that they're not flash cards. This makes putting the tough words in your pocket to practice throughout the day. I've yet to take scissors to the flip book to make flash cards, but perhaps that will work well.

The GRE flashcards are great. Could have been presented a little better, maybe as actual flashcards, but the book helps to keep them all together. Very beneficial to have word used in sentence as well.

These flash cards are fantastic; they helped me to a perfect score on the GRE Verbal section. While it helps if you use these in conjunction with other GRE exam prep guides, these cards can serve you well on their own. Note though, this is a flashcard 'flip book', not a set of true flashcards. If you're looking for real English flashcards, try Vis-Ed's line of cards, but be aware that their English flashcards are very basic.

Bonus GRE tip: It helps to know several languages for the GRE verbal section. Many of the 'increasing difficulty' words are foreign words imported into English. Look out for them! This vocab book points you in the right direction for these, but the list is not exhaustive.

Reviewer Permalink
The deck is a bit bulky, but I like the fact that they are bound, so that I wouldn't lose any of them. I also like that the synonyms are listed along with the definition of the word, and that there is plenty of empty space for me to make notes. It would have been great to have antonyms as well.

500 words isn't too much to handle. With other books there is a "comprehensive" list of thousands of words and it is far too daunting. 500 words is managable and knowing these words well will help with many many others.

I went through parts of the book every night for 1 month and saw my scores increase steadily on practice exams before the real deal. It went well.

Content excellent, I thought the format would be "flash CARDS" as the title suggests, not a fat book that is difficult to carry and use during "brief" breaks, i.e. waiting in line, stopped at red light, vacuuming...

Reviewer Permalink
I returned this product because it doesn't have flashcards, i.e. vocabulary words printed on hard or thick cards. None of the pages can be torn out of the book. You're supposed to flip through the pages of the book and fold over the corners of the pages that contain the word that you've already memorized; turn the book upside down to learn the rest of the vocab words.

Despite this inconvenience, I'm pretty sure it has all the words that Kaplan can provide.

(Hide Review...)  Fantastic product--GREAT gift for any age--I LOVE IT!
Reviewer Permalink
If you care about having a great vocabulary--or if you wish things were otherwise when friends or business associates use words that you don't know, and are too embarrassed to say to them, "I don't know that word" and have them give you The Look--then what are you doing without this product? This is probably the single most important vocabulary building tool you could purchase. When I applied to grad school in my twenties, I had to learn these words using the GRE Prep book. Lugging the book around was difficult, so I wrote the words onto cards and carried them all over NYC--studying on buses, subways, in parks, etc--I memorized a LOT of them and yes, I did GREAT on the vocab test in the GRE. Now I'm middle aged and continued my education, till I now have a doctorate in law from a top 20 law school--and believe me or not, the GRE vocab words that I learned have not only stayed with me all these years, but have been the "big words" I've encountered most in life. And add this: the words come back to me whenever I need them, giving me an impressive vocabulary, when I need it(even my PhD English husband is often impressed). All this because I memorized the words in the GRE study book. Well, here I am now, thinking of what to give as gifts to my children in their twenties and even to my mother in her seventies! They are all big readers and word lovers, but, like all of us, they encounter words they don't know, and they often ask me for definitions, most of which I know! So I hunted online and found this product. I was thrilled! I got one for all of them, and another one for myself, to continue memorizing the words I never got to when I played with GRE vocabulary the first time. These aren't just any old vocabulary words thrown into a batch. These words are the most often encountered words in your more intelligently written books and magazines, or online materials, and are words that, like all great words, capture essences of things that no other word quite captures, or which would take an entire phrase to describe--caught in one word. Imagine having all those words--but none so difficult that they would never be of use--in one handy little study book. Well, obviously, I can't say enough about this product. Would I make any improvements on it? Yes. One. I would not say that they are cards, on the product, because they are not cards. They are pages in a book. I suppose you could cut them out and make them into cards, but too much trouble. I wish they were cards, as I learn kinesthetically, and I prefer cards that I can sort in deck form. But apart from that, you could not give yourself or your loved ones any better gift than this. I'm serious. At least, not if they are above average in IQ and would enjoy the enriching experience of learning a word for a thing, where they have never known a word for it before. Even if they are average IQ but are motivated to experience books and magazines and internet articles or college classrooms, or socializing with educated people, and being equipped for every word they will probably encounter. BUY THIS PRODUCT. I cannot imagine getting more for your money, if you have even the slightest love for great words. Memorizing a beautiful new word and making it your own, is like acquiring a magical lens, through which life becomes clearer and richer. Truly. Buy it. Ready? GO!

This book is reasonably useful, yet the synonym selection is not very impressive and the definitions are comically oversimplified from time to time. The bottom line is that this felt like an SAT study guide and not a GRE helper.

The content is good; however these are NOT flashcards as the title states. It is actually a paperback book with two words on each page w/ their definitions on the reverse side. The pages are regular paper, not even the type you could tear out & make into CARDS. There IS another BOX of Kaplan GRE Exam review cards. Be careful when ordering.

this book is really helpful if you don't mind carrying around a strangely shaped book with super thin pages. The fold down tabs were helpful, but still didn't make the words function really as cards... it was more like flipping through the dictionary than using flashcards. clumsy book, but really helpful w/ each word... includes the definition, a sentence and synonyms. overall wouldn't purchase this over just making actual cards.

I wasted a lot of time with this list of 500 words, many of which are common knowledge to grad students already...I literally saw only TWO out of the 500 words on the actual GRE verbal I took five days ago. I know Kaplan can't predict which words will be on the GRE, but come on, only two? I did find that the usage of the vocab. words in sentences did help me remember the word if I didn't yet know it. Sometimes the sentences were a bit odd just enough to make you recall them. Just too bad the GRE didn't actually test those words! Could have been harder and better. Test the HARD words to get a high score, not fill 300 pages with more common, untested words, Kaplan!

The format is very helpful--I found it much, much easier and more effective than either trying to learn words from a list, or making my own flashcards. One downside, though, is that there were some words that seemed too easy to be useful to most people taking the exam. They may have been able to trim out fifty or so words, or at least replaced them with more challenging ones. Overall, however, this is something I would recommend to anyone else I knew studying for the GRE.

The flashcards are easy to use and have most of the common and high frequency words of the GRE. However, they come as a book and detaching the cards from the book is a slight pain. Also, they contain only 1500 words. You would still need another book for the remaining 2000 words.

Reviewer Permalink
Some words, such as "chaos" to me are too easy to be included in the "500 hardest GRE words" but overall I learned a good handful of words that WERE on the GRE. However, there are some typos and some repeats (a few words that listed synonmys listed some synonyms twice or listed the actual vocab word as a synonym for itself) which bothers me because it means that editing was hurried and badly done. However, I only studied the vocabulary from this book and I made a 600 on the verbal. Its just this book is so easy to study with, you can even make it a (dorky) game with your friends when bored. Who knows this one? And in playing some can help you remember it.

If your weakness is the verbal section, this is a great tool (because after all, the verbal section mostly just vocab anyway). I would guess that the average test taker already knows about 1/3 to 1/2 of the words in this book, but for under $10, you can't complain.

(Hide Review...)  Flashcards are flimsy and time consuming
Reviewer Permalink
These are NOT 3x5 or 5x8 flash cards. This is a book in which one has to cut out the flimsy and see-through 2" x 8.5" half pages with the word on one side and the definition on the other. One can not simply rip them out, because each page has two words, so cutting is absolutely necessary. I have found a more comprehesive list of words, as well as common roots, suffixes and prefixes, from the Barron's GRE Study Guide and am making my own flash cards from them.

The content is good, but these aren't actually flash cards. It's a bound book with very thin pages and two words to each page. Studying with flashcards is best done by testing one's self with cards, slipping failures back into the deck for near-term review, and setting repeated successes aside. This isn't possible with a book.

The vocabulary section of the GRE is the one section I am quite frightened of,considering how extensive it is. But the Exam Flashcards offer an efficient and easy way to study. They are small enough to fit into my purse or backpack, allowing me to take them anywhere I go. When I am stuck in traffic or waiting in line at the grocery store, I can pull them out and review. I highly recommend these flashcards to anyone taking the GRE, they are so conveinent!
