Seven chapters offer advice on when to go, where to go, vehicle rental, lodging, air travel, and other critical decisions. St. Andrews receives special attention in its own chapter. Extensive descriptions of sixty Scottish courses feature complete contact information updated for 2003-04. Appendices include a golf-readiness checklist, useful web sites, and an annotated bibliography for further reading.

I used this book to plan my golf trip to Scotland for my brother and I, along with help directly from Mr. Ferguson himself. You really need to read this book over and over again to reap the full benfit of all the info in here. He covers so much important information. I planned my own unique trip, choosing golf courses and places to stay, plus rental car and when to go and what to bring. Our trip came off with no problems, all tee times, rooms, travel, directions, etc were all right on target. We even met other golfers who were using the book as well. I know we saved money using this book as apposed to going through a agancy. I will be using his service again on my next trip as well.

Take some good advice from a guy (Ferguson) who has been there and done that. Very easy reading with some greats tips for planning your trip. You'll pay for the book just by following his car rental recommendation.

You can scroll down to other reviews of this book, I would simply be repeating the praises that others have for this golf/travel guide.
I devoured this book in almost one sittting. The advice is sincere, genuine and as helpful as travel advice gets. There is no mystery why everyone has rated this book five stars: it IS that good. I am planning a trip to Scotland in 2009 for our regular foursome. With this book I have a good idea what our group needs to decide on before we go. (E.g., Is playing at St. Andrews the major reason for our trip? Do we want to stay in a hotel/a B&B/a self-catering location? Do we want to stay in St. Andrews town itself or are we willing to pack up and re-locate to other locations? Do we want to spend $350 to play one fantastic course or 4 lesser-known links?) This book is practical and I recommend it WITHOUT any reservation! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-21 04:00:34 EST)

I have been to Scotland with tour operator, but this book is excellent if you want to save money and plan the trip yourself. Great review of golf courses and good ideas of lodging and traveling. Highly recommended. If you can find a better book, let me know.

This is by far the best book I've seen on how to get a tee time at St. Andrews Old Course. It's written by a golfer for golfers.

My golf foursome sought an aide to planning our golf trip to Scotland. We found it in Golf In Scotland. We followed his advice down to using the rental car agency he recommended and arranging an advance tee time at the Old Course. The result was a perfect trip that cost us about $2600 instead of the $5,000 that we were quoted by one of those purchased trip packages. Besides, we had the fun of planning the trip ourselves. He even arranged for great weather.

A little over a year ago, I bought this book as I was going to plan a trip to Scotland with 7 other friends and I wanted to research the best courses to play for a week long trip. I read the book quickly and settled on a number of courses to play. I sent Allan Ferguson an email and he quickly responded and actually helped me coordinate the trip. We got back about 6 weeks ago and it was the most amazing trip that I have ever been on. Not only did the book and Allan's recommendations of courses come in handy, but also he instructed and helped me (as mentioned in his book) coordinate the trip much much cheaper than if I had used one of the well known, but over priced golf travel agencies such as Perry Golf. Quite simply, there isn't a better book on golf in Scotland and if you are thinking about planning a trip, Allan's services or recommendations will come in handy to save you plenty of cash on your trip.

Unless you're being comped by a lobbyist on your next golf trip to Scotland, buy this book. Ferguson provides accurate and updated information; I found his reviews of courses and places to stay spot on. If you're the type of traveller who prefers the "hidden gems" instead of doing a "grand tour", you will find this book especially useful. I used this book to plan a recent golf trip to Scotland, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Quite simply, Allan Ferguson "gets it." His logistical knowledge, the people, places, things to do when you're not golfing, the courses, and even hole-by-hole descriptions are invaluable. His sensibilities mirror my own, and that of my group. I have successfully used this book to plan two trips of a lifetime. Like Allan says, you can use this book to travel to Scotland twice for less than the cost of one trip by the tour operators.

Simply put, if you're an American (on anyone else who can read English) and you want to travel abroad to play golf in Scotland, this book is "a must," the first one you should buy, and maybe the only one you really need. That is, unless you don't care about what the trip will cost and you have no difficulty letting other people make decisions for you. Mr. Ferguson gives you the ins and outs of making your own arrangements, the pros and cons of various approaches, and the highlights of a number of top-notch Scottish golf courses. He gives you the tools to do it on your own, without the tour company or travel agent . . . to create your own golfing adventure. Which is not to say that Mr. Ferguson will not work with you as non-comissioned, fee-based agent (as he's done with me), but it's also very clear he'd be just as happy, maybe more so, to have you buy the book and plan the adventure on your own (as I do now). By the way, the second book you ought to buy is James Finegan's "Where Golf is Great" (see my Amazon review), a judgment with which I feel certain Mr. Ferguson would not disagree.

Having had the delight of living in St. Andrews and traveling over most of Scotland playing golf, Allan's book is the best I have seen, by far, for describing the reality of golf, travel, and living in Scotland. He sugarcoats nothing, his opinion mirrors mine, and he is interested is ensuring his readers know exactly what to expect and know exactly how to best user their time and travel dollars. Even with my Scottish experience and contacts, his book is my golf/travel in Scotland bible.

After reading Mr. Ferguson's book we solicited his help in planning our first trip to Scotland. It turned out to be the best vacation we've had. Two subsequent trips were just as enjoyable using his book as our primary guide.

I have two editions of this book and Allan helped me plan two trips to Scotland. The two trips Allan planned included some of the name courses in his book and some of the lesser knowns in his book and they were the best golf vacations I have taken. Better golf at lower cost than the the tours. The course descriptions are accurate and I found a lot of great golf at reasonable prices. You can use this book to plan your own excursion and save big bucks over the guided tours, meet some really nice folks along the way, and play some of the best golf available. Simply, it is well worth the small cost. PS- at most places plan to carry your clubs or pull a cart so a lightweight carry bag is a good idea.

First off, let me say that the 1st and second editions of this book garnered 29 5 star reviews (all the reviews were 5 stars). Allan's book makes it so easy to book your own golf trip and save a ton of money. We just finished using the book to set up a trip for August of 2006. This is our second trip and hit alot of the "trophy" courses the first time around. We'll be playing Machrihanish twice, Royal Dornach, Nairn, Royal Aberdeen, Murfield twice, St. Andrews Old and Jubilee, Crail, and Carnoustie , renting a VW Caravelle van, and staying at some great B&B's. I had two tour operators quote me on the same trip and they each wanted at least $1000 more per person over what it will cost us to book ourselves...so Allan's book is saving us $4000. Allan's reviews of courses and lodging are spot on.
