This book is incredibly detailed and reads like a comprehensive textbook on how to drive fast. It is an easy and pleasant read, yet takes a while to finish (just finished my copy), just because there is so much in it - and one gets so much out of it. To quote a track instructor, this book will make your car go faster than thousands of $$$ of performance upgrades. It covers basic driving physics (no, no pages of equations, and they did the math for you where necessary so you just need to look at the final numbers to get the point), basic and advanced line theory, car handling, control and weight shifting, the approach to analyzing a new track, methods to analyze and improve lap times, rain driving, passing techniques, car setup (suspension and tire basics), types of racecars, general advice on life as an amateur or pro driver. Real life quotes on each topic from famous drivers. A reference book that you will read again and again, in full or in parts. Most people consider it the essential read. A steal at the current price.

This book was recommended by several sources on the internet, that's why I bought it. I'm about half way through it and it is a very good source of information on racing. It covers everything from the first time you see a track to developing the line and then corner entry, exit and quite a few things I haven't read yet. I'm sure it will help me to become faster and more consistant.

Going Faster is a very informative book with page after page of how to take corners at high speeds. It is not a very entertaining read.
I would recommend it for the information it contains, but warn that it takes an effort to slog through an excessive amount of detail to find the hidden gems of racing technique. An analytical individual who wishes to dissect their track performance will enjoy; dudes just looking to drive fast, probably not so much.

reading this book will surely improve your race driving technique and make you a more intelligent race driver. As the other reviewers have mentioned, this is *the* bible of race driving technique. Books like Ayrton Senna's Principles of Race Driving and Alain Prost's Competition Driving may have more flashiness and glamour, but Going Faster! is the reference textbook you'll be grabbing from your bookshelf regularly if you participate in HPDEs or autocrosses. There is no substitute for track time, but understanding the physics and theory behind car control and the real world racing line will help you avoid making time-wasting mistakes when you are actually on the track.

Even if you don't race and the closest you get to motorsports is the TV remote, this book will give you a better understanding of the technical nuances involved and make for a more enjoyable experience.

I bought this book prior to attending the Skip Barber Racing School, and it was the perfect preparation. The book goes into far more detail than the actual school has time for, so by internalizing it before attending the school, you are well prepared to put the theories into practice.

If the book has any flaw at all, it is that it treats race car driving like something that can be approached completely mathematically. When you're in a real car, instinct, courage, and judgment still count for a lot.

Going Faster is the recognized authority on the subject, and it might never be surpassed. It gets quite technical at times, and bears re-reading as one gains race experience. It is a bit too much for spectators, but for an ambitious racer, this book and seat time can take you to the winner's circle.

If I had one book about driving to recommend this would certainly be it. Skip Barber managed to cover pretty much every aspect of how to drive fast around a track in step-by-step, clear and easy to understand fashion. The book is well ilustrated and well structured.
I personaly haven't taken classes at his school, but I'm pretty shure that all the knowledge he tries to pass and his method are put down in words in this masterpiece. It's the closest from a racing driving class you can get without actually driving around a track with an instructor at your side.

From what I've read so far, it is a great book which covers the aspects of "Going Faster" (whad'ya know?) More theory, rather than dealing with the hands-on-at-the-track-i-need-to-make-sure-the-car-is-running-before-i-go-out, part. Great for people (like the book says) "who want to get into racing or want to appreciate more of what the pro's do when they're spectating from the stands. I haven't read Speed Secrets yet, but from what I read from the reviews, it should be similar.
Compared to Secrets of Solo Racing (which I have read), there's much more useful information for me, because it has more material covering driving rather than covering the entire autocrossing experience (volunteering, clean up, what to take to the track...you can get this from your close autocrossing friends. So focus on driving well with what you have).
All in all, main point is, great book if you want to learn how to drive fast.

My wife and I just completed our first high performance driver training event sponsored by our local Porsche Club of America chapter. The book was recommended by my driving instructor. It seems to be a very detailed version of the Skip Barber Racing School classroom material. Lots of photos and diagrams that make the concepts easy to understand. Reading the information is like listening to my driving instructor all over again. I've purchased two other books on the subject. One was so technical it was difficult to understand and the other was 98% the author telling how great he was during his racing career. This book is spot on. It is a must have for anyone who is about to attend a driving school or is a spirited driver.

When starting my book project "Go Ahead - Take the Wheel," I decided to focus my book on how people can start racing be it autocrossing, high performance driving events, and wheel-to-wheel racing on budgets ranging from economy to extravagant. I choose not to go into much detail on driving techinques in part because there are fantastic books such as Going Faster and Speed Secrets that serve as resources on driving techinques.

This is a book that a racer will read through once, then continually come back to read again learning new things each time. It truly is one of the great books on how to drive a racecar.

I have about 15 instructed on-track days under my belt, and this book told me a LOT about the physics underlying the instruction I have received. It is a fantastic aggregation of wisdom. A lot of on-track instruction is simply, "do this" or "do that" but there's relatively discussion of why you do things. This book spells it out.

70% of the book is timeless because the laws of physics well never change, and car dynamics do not really change. The remaining 30% could by updated. Specifically, the discussion of "showroom stock" racers, street radials and street brakes are starting to show their age. Showroom stock cars are a lot more advanced than the Taurus SHO they use as an example.

My suggestion? Update the discussion, improve the images, and consider analyzing 25 challenging turns from tracks around the world. The analysis of Sebring was a great way to apply the physics lessons; and I would extend that to other tracks and turns.

I bought this book to help me get better laps times in GTR 2. GTR 2 is such a realistic simulation that arcade driving techniques just don't work. This book is absolutely amazing. It covers every possible detail---maintaining traction in corners, braking and cornering strategies and techniques, spin prevention and recovery, etc. By applying the lessons in this book, I have greatly improved lap times in GTR 2, and I also have a greater understanding of the physics and planning involved in modern racing.

The level of detail in this book is astounding. No details are left out. In the chapter covering shifting, they explain in detail why you should blip the throttle when downshifting, including the effect that blipping the throttle has on the engine, transmission, and grip at the rear wheels. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in automobile racing.

"Going Faster" is surely one of the best books ever written about the fundamentals of driving. While focusing on handling a car at speed on a track, each of these lessons applies to general handling in all situations. Situational awareness, looking ahead, picking the best line through a corner, understanding the car's grip and why smooth inputs matter so much. Everything is here.

If you have ever manhandled a car through an autocross course and wondered why you could not compare to many others on supposedly lesser equipment, this book helps explain why. Or if you are simply wanting to improve your general driving skills and want to appreciate a vehicle dynamics, grip and basic skills, then this is also a great resource. I am convinced that having read this book as part of my preparations prior to my first track experience helped to keep the day safe and enjoyable. As a result, I learned far more than would otherwise have been the case. Buy it. You will not regret the education.

(Hide Review...)  The Best Manual of a Beginning Competition Driver
Reviewer Permalink
I couldn't "swallow" this book at once, it took me three sessions during a couple of months to figure out that amongst the good books on motor sports this one serves the role of a guidebook, of a manual of a beginning competition driver, best of all.

What do I mean by "good books"? Competition Driving by Alain Prost, The Technique of Motor Racing by Piero Taruffi, Driving in Competition by Alan Johnson, Sports Car and Competition Driving by Paul Frere, to name a few. All of them are wise and not overcomplicated, and have no buzz about the success stories of champions, the buzz which is useless for the reader interested in driving techniques.

I've found out that the definition of oversteer and understeer here is the most complete and most correct amongst the books that I've listed, yet without the formulas that may frighten somebody. It took the author 17 pages full of illustrations to explain these modes of car behaviour. This is the first big advantage of this book.

Another major advantage of this book is the serious attention of the author to the role of hardware, which is sometimes overlooked by the other writers, who claim that hardware is important, but do not write in-depth chapters about it. The book has may illustrations and explanations how the center of gravity, wheel base, and the suspension elements like springs, shock absorbers and the roll bars affect longitudal and lateral load transfer speed and motion, which occurs during acceleration, braking and cornering; how various adjustment affect the weight applied to each of the wheels, and how this affects car behaviour. He is the only author to mention the effect of download on coefficient of friction of the wheel, and why the total friction of the wheels is at its highest level when the download on each wheel is the same, i.e. the car is balanced. The other writers in this case did only mention that to keep the car balanced is important without a sound explanation.

The book has an appendix with the listing of racing resources, it has a good bibliography and a useful glossary and an index.

I highly recommend this book, although sometimes I had a feeling that more humour and liveliness would have made it even better. Please also consider buying "Skip Barber - Going Faster" DVD in addition to this book.

(Hide Review...)  The gateway to real performance
Reviewer Permalink
For most people performance is something you read on the tach. If you are among those few people who think that a Fiat 500 at 99,995% of its potential is going faster than a McLaren F1 at 98% of its potential, then you cannot miss this book, unless you've already won a world championship... maybe.

Pros:
1) it assumes you initially know nothing. And for most of us, even car fanatics, it is damn true. Actually 99.99999% of people don't know the difference between oversteer and understeer! the explanation given by most websites and magazines is absolutely incomplete and useless for a pilot. Did you know that a car whose rear is visibly leaning outside the trajectory is *NOT* necessarily oversteering? (actually it can be understeering!)
2) this books covers every possible aspect of racing, including insights in the world of racing, psychological aspects, preparation for the race, chassis setup, the role of hardware, limiting the damage in case of accidents and spins etc.
3) it's far from the useless belief that car control is a skill you're born with. It's a brutal demystification of the reality of racing
4) it's full of anecdotes and pearls of wisdom from the Skip Barber Racing School Instructors, which makes it more complete and more enjoyable to read. It's recommended even for the general motorsport enthusiast, and at the same time for the professional pilots, I didn't think this was possible...
5) it comes from multiple inputs. Far from the inevitably distorted theories of individuals, this book is very objective about where lap time comes from. If you talk to individual pilots, they tend to emphasize the importance of the aspect of racing which is most challenging for THEM, instead of emphasizing the objective importance of, say, higher corner exit speed vs. shorter braking distance. I heard more than one real pilot stressing the primary importance of perfect threshold braking... read this book and you will find out that for a good percentage of corners you DON'T use threshold braking (in order to speed up the turn-in phase) unlike everyone thinks, and anyway optimized braking zones are the least important thing for lap time. It goes to the extent of showing the output of data acquisition monitors of professional racers and apprentices, to point out the mistakes and to QUANTIFY them. I don't think other books do this. Every line of text made me discover new things.
6) other qualities that I cannot think about right now :-)

Cons:

1) for the most technically oriented, of course this book won't answer all the questions (it isn't an encyclopedy). For instance, many of you will want to know more about tire technology in order to exploit their potential better (which is a crucial skill). To satisfy any further curiosity, you should read technical books (indicated in this book, anyway). This one focuses on driving, but it does not overlook car technology which influences driving techniques and concepts. You simply may want a deeper "engineering" insight. Impossible to include everything...
2) it stresses the importance of the hand-eye coordination, but non soon enough. I would have put it in the first chapter. It is the source of so many mistakes, people tend to look at the car instead of looking forward. You must look at where you want to go, not at your car.
3) it doesn't replace a stage on track, nor days of practice. An instructor will do what this book can't. The problem is that an instructor (and a lot of practice) is needed to do what *ANY* book cannot do.

Bottom line: this book is absolutely a must read, it's the ideal first step to enter a new performance dimension.

Reviewer Permalink
I have never raced cars but have developed an interest in the subject, so this is written from a layman's perspective. My background is in computer engineering; I've recently read "Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynamics", providing me with a basic background of the physics affecting cars.

That said, my one area of disappointment relating to this book is in its treatment of technical subjects. The book strives to describe complex physical phenomena in terminology accessible to the least technically-inclined among us. This goal is worhwhile, and I could understand simplification of the subject matter. However, it's not just a matter of simplification: there are items that appear to me to be factually wrong. The claims seem "kinda right", and essentially correct conclusions are drawn, but it's a case of the ends justifying the means. A particularly worrisome example (for those who have already read the book) is the initial discussion of tire slip angles.

Once the book settles into the primary topic of what a driver has to do when behind the wheel, I found the it to be an approachable and helpful introduction to the world of racing. Many of the techniques provided utilize heuristics rather than detailed analyses; while my logical mind was sometimes left wanting for a more rigorous treatment, the approach used is probably the only workable one given the length of the book, the target audience, and the highly-complex and constantly-changing nature of race driving.

Going Faster tells us exactly how to go faster. And it does so in a scientific manner, using both theories and actual practice.

What's really great about this book is that it's like a text book. While that might turn some people off, that's exactly the strength of this book. It teaches you, step by step, what you have to do to minimize your time around the track.

It tackles subjects such as the Racing Line, Turning, Braking and Entering, Accelerating off the corner... and it does so in a methodical manner. It not only teaches you HOW to do what you're supposed to do in a racecar, it also teaches you WHY. And that deepens your understanding, and consequent practice, of the techniques of racing.

If I had a list of 5 books on racing, this one would definitely be in that list.

Going Faster approaches race driving from a very technical perspective. The book investigates racing lines, techniques, and some preparation subjects by paying attention to the underlying physics. The writing is crisp and clean without coming off as childish. Peppered with quotes from real drivers, this book is very approachable and readable.

The result is a wonderful book that you can read from cover to cover, or flip open to review something that's giving you trouble.

What's lacking? There's nearly no treatment of the driver himself. There's no way to learn what to think about before the race, how to mentally prepare yourself. Or how to achieve consistent results, or deal with mistakes. For that, you'll want a Ross Bentley book.

This 278 page book is all about driving. If you were like me and cant understand how you could write 278 pages just on driving, your in for a real treat. This book is a racers bible. Teaches you the fastest way through a turn, how to find out how much side load your tires can withstand, how to run in someones draft, how to avoid accidents, what driving line to use in the rain, passing, lowering lap times, diffent ways to shift gears, deal with oversteer and understeer. I can go on and on. This book has improved my overall driving as an everyday daily driver. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their racing or just improve your overall driving.

I read "Going Faster" from cover to cover before participating in a 3 day Skip Barber Racing School program at Laguna Seca Raceway (Monterey, CA). This book is not only one of the most informative accounts on the techniques of both fast driving and competition racing, but is an enjoyable read as well. The content has it all, from basic car control, to much more complex technical information regarding car setup, and physics of a race car. I found this book to be both informative AND inspiring, which speaks volumes in itself. Regardless of whether you are an armchair racer, gamer, autocrosser, club racer, or pro, this book offers something for everyone. I have also read many of the other standards on auto racing (Bob Bondurant's guide to high performance racing, and Carrol Smith's "Drive to Win"), and "Going Faster" offers the best of both worlds. If I had to choose one "Bible of Racing," this would most certainly be it! Worth Every Penny!

I've been hot lapping on road courses for about 6 yrs now, but I was still able to get a lot out of this book. They say Skip Barber's classes are among the best, so that's why I took a chance on this book. Money well spent! This book would be great for a beginner, but also has finer points that would benefit drivers of all levels. The photos were very clear and helped support the text well. Racing is really like anything, you need to understand the fundamentals. If you're going to go out on a course, or even just want to control your car better around city streets, this book can take you to the next level.

I race in AutoX and roadracing, and recently became an instructor in a racing license course. I bought and read several books about the subject of auto racing. The 'Drive Faster' book is absolutely excellent and definitely the most thorough read available on how to drive a racecar. It has the background, the theoretic part, the science part, the diagrams and is full of useful and detailed pictures. It's nicely laid out and written in a no-nonsense language. Every chapter is finished with a good conclusions part. As a bonus, there are separate pieces of useful and funny 'war story' experiences of several successful drivers, related to the subject of the chapter.

Drive Faster covers the subject of race driving from the ground up. I would say it's a big mistake not to buy this book if you race cars. I've gone back to read and re-read chapters in this book and everytime I start to think and find something to apply on the track. Best and funniest result was finding 0.5 sec in an AutoX by saying loud to myself "feeding, feeding" like Danny Sullivan suggests in one of his war stories... Best money/performance spent on the car so far. If this sounds like a commercial, so be it. The bottom line is that, unless you're Michael Schumacher, it makes an enourmous amount of sense to spend $100 on a couple on books to unlock driver performance rather than buying that nice anodized alloy performance item to gain laptime... Top marks!

This is a great, detailed description of how to "Go Faster!" It represents the race driving theory taught in Skip Barber's 3-day school and will be helpful to anyone involved in racing at any level. Nothing beats the School's seat time you get under the instructors' watchful eye, but if you want to understand the how and why of race driving, this book does it best. There are some great illustrations and commentary from the pros throughout. If you can only have one racing book, this sould be the one! PS - it is a great refresher and study guide for those of you who have gone to school.

This is the 4th or 5th racing instructional book I've read. Carl does a good job of explaining the different techniques in racing. I also picked up a few new things! The diagrams are professional and easy to understand. The side-comments by other racing experts also adds a lot of "realism" to it.

Going Faster is one of the greatest books that I have ever read on the matter of racing. It covers all aspects of the sport and most importantly gives important information on the techinical side of race cars. It is a very valuble asset that all up and coming drivers should purchase.

The term Ruthian, in honor of Babe Ruth, is a metaphor frequently used in sports to describe an accomplishment that doesn't merely break a record but so far exceeds anything that occurred previously that it deserves this ultimate superlative. On the subject of learning how to drive a race car, Carl Lopez' book, "Going Faster" is Ruthian. A road-racing fan for many years, I had always wanted to take up amateur, SCCA racing but had difficulty developing a budget for it. Now that I can afford it, I wanted to find a way to make up for lost time in learning driving techniques. Although a lot of progressive, in-car experience is a necessity, Going Faster prepares you for learning by its incredible detail and brilliant illustrations, presented in down to earth fashion, used to describe virtually every aspect of the interaction of vehicle dynamics, race course variation, and proper driver reaction. If you have a library of other books on the subject, donate them to a thrift store and buy this book. Even if you never race, reading a book that covers a subject brilliantly is a pleasure.

This is an excellent book that covers all the basics. The diagrams are great and the text easy to understand. The book takes more of a physics, fundamentals and technique approach, without being too mathematical.

GOING FASTER is simply the best, most readable, and most up-to-date racing textbook around! Although no amount of classroom instruction, principles or theory will ever replace seat time and on-track experience when it comes to developing racing skills, a book like this is a great way to enhance and help assess what you're doing (or not doing) out on the track. Plus its balance between a scientific approach and conversational language and anecdotes from well established drivers make it the most readable "how to" racing book I've ever read. Good for the beginner and seasoned "expert" alike. Congratulations to Carl Lopez on a fine job!

I am an amateur racer competing in SCCA regional racing.

I found GOING FASTER to be a very useful textbook. The organization is excellent, allowing me to skip some basic information and go directly to the areas which concerned me the most. The clear an detailed description of exactly how a racing car is driven through corners helped me analize my own driving and improve my performance.

The description of each aspect of racing starts with a technical foundation and then builds to a description of how to do it in the car. I am an engineer by traning, so this combination of a theroetical treatment with practiacl advice is excellent for me.

I found the descrption of how things are in racing to be right on, and I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to try racing, as well as to the racer who wants to improve his or her perforamnce.

If you are looking for a book that gets right down to the nitty gritty, this is it. Very well written, has tons of diagrams and photos. I soaked up the information in every chapter like a sponge and never felt like a topic wasn't covered thoroughly enough. And the author is right in that he doesn't just present his opinion alone. He is great at offering different pros take on various issues which I thought was great. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone serious about learning more about racing, whether it be karts, autocross, stock cars, open-wheeled Formula Dodge, Indy Lights, or Indy Cars....this book covers the techniques of line, braking, car control techniques, shifting and passing, as well as much much more that you will soak up!

This book will be the new bible for racers. Period.

As a long time SCCA/PCA/Skip Barber racer(25 years at Lime Rock) and Chief Driving Instructor for the local chapter of the BMW Car club, I can highly recommend this book. I will use it often to review concepts and keep me "on course" . This will be the new classic in the industry for high speed driving/racing. Amazing detail and diagrams not found in any other book on the subject.
