Go, Dog. Go! (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books (Hardcover))

Illus. in full color. Many kinds of dogs in a variety of fun-filled activities.
Life lessons? Romance? Literary instruction? Go, Dog. Go! offers all this and more, wrapped up in one simply worded, warmly hued package. Using single-syllable words in rhythmic repetition, and introducing colors and prepositions, this Seuss-styled classic has been an early favorite of children since 1961. For those looking for deeper meaning in a beginning reader book, here you'll find nothing less than a microcosm of life. Green dogs, yellow dogs, big dogs, little dogs. Dogs who prefer cars, dogs who favor skis. All represent the diversity a child will find in the world. And the slow-to-bud romance between the cheerfully oblivious yellow dog and the mincing pink poodle explains more succinctly than most self-help books what goes on in many grown-up relationships. Nonetheless, Eastman takes the concept of "primary" to heart, with his simple silly phrases and solidly colored illustrations. Not only will this book inspire peals of laughter in kids, it will also help them make the magical connection between those mysterious black squiggles on the page, and the words they hear and speak. (Ages 4 to 8)

So of course it thrills my heart that my two nieces (2.5 and 5) like it too.

This book is really an early reader, it's not *intended* for children under that age, though of course it can function as a read-aloud for little-little ones. (Not always - my younger niece won't always sit through this one, it's a bit long!)

There are two running plots in the book, one about hats, and one about where the dogs are all ultimately going; these two plots meet marvelously at the end of the book. (For *months*, I couldn't go a day without having to re-enact "Do you like my hat? I do, I like that hat, what a party hat!" with the older niece!)

Most of the book, however, is caught up with just basic vocabulary words, mostly about dogs - "One dog going in, three dogs going out" or "The sun is up, the sun is yellow, the yellow sun is over the house".

This can be a little tedious, but I the kids don't seem to think so - even at their fidgiest, they want me to say every word.

This is my favorite book of all time. I can't recommend it highly enough. If the "dog party in the trees" doesn't capture your imagination, I don't know what will. For the last forty years or so, I have been looking -- and I mean this literally, not figuratively -- for said party. That's a bit cracked, I know, but I just can't help myself.

I loved this book and read it all the time when I was little. I plan on buying it when I have kids. The pictures are colorful and fun. The words are easy to learn and each page seems to come alive with it's own story.

Is there a better childrens book than Go Dog Go? Great colors, simple but satisfying pictures, and of course, lots of dogs. Finally just wore the cover off the original with the third kid. If your child age 3 to 8 doesn't like GDG perhaps you should make an appointment. With a lot of Barney/Pooh Bear/TV tie in knockoffs out there, get an original. Also good are: the Bernstein Bears, the Olivia series, Roosevelt and the magic pebble, Ten apples up on top, Are you my Mother?,and for girls the Madeline books to name just a few.

this was one of my favorite books as a child, and when i picked it up after 35 years, i remembered and recognized the illustrations and scenes as if i had read it yesterday. this is a pleasure to read with its simple verse-like writing, its wonderful drawings, its bright colors, and its loveable characters. i couldn't reocmmend a book more highly, especially good for young dog lovers, like our son. don't bother with the board book version, which takes down 76 pages to about 6. this original is easy to read and a joy.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

This is a short, terrific book that neither you nor your child will tire of reading. Toddlers love the idea of dogs driving cars, and beginning readers enjoy the satisfaction of reading the story without help. This makes the book appropriate for a wide age range. The ending is charming and will put a smile on your face as well as your child's.

This is an excellent childrens' books. The pictures keep the child interested while the repetition helps them as they learn to talk and read. I like all of the P.D. Eastman books that I have read.

This is such a fun read! The illustrations are great. This is one of my son's favorite books. It teaches children colors and opposites. Out of the blue he will say to me, "Do you like my hat?" Then we play the hat game for awhile! I highly recommend this book.

I started showing this book to my daughter when she was 16 months old.
It is her absolute favorite (and she has about 30 books). She throws the book at me and shoves it in my face at least 4x per day.

She loves pointing to all the dogs while I tell her the color of each.
She is obsessed with bikes, so the dogs riding bikes really get her excited. She is now almost 18 months old, and she now understands that the sun is hot, and can say the word "hat, car, stop, and tree" from the repeated readings of the book.

There are so many things that this book teaches...colors, stop and go, up/over/under/in/out/around, day/night.....It was my absolute favorite beginner book as a small child too, and I am 40 now.

My little grandson is 6 years old and was experiencing some trouble with his reading in first grade. My Mother-in Law in the Chicago Suburbs told me that she read this book to all four of her children when they were having difficulty reading years ago, along with all of the Dr. Suess books as well...
All of her children turned out to be Professionals, one is a Bi-lingual teacher, then there's a Physical Therapist amd a Professor of Language Arts at a nearby University and one became an Executive for a very large Auto Manufacturing Company for 30 yrs. So, I ordered the "Go, Dog. Go !" book for him.
He was so excited to get his own package in the mail, that we sat down on the couch immediately and he read the whole book to me, all 62 pages of it !!! He just had a few little problems with the "wh" and the "th" words, otherwise he did fantastic !! Since then, his reading in school has improved greatly, and his teacher and parents are thrilled. So am I !! He understood the underlying humor in the book, and looked forward to every next page.

Thanks for a great price too !! Jan Jimenez, Danbury, CT.

Well made replica of the version I read as a tyke in the '60s. The hardback version appears in good binding, and the story and drawings are exactly as I remember them. Now I get to enjoy them a second time with my kids. The book is marginally educational; it's mostly just fun, and kids will enjoy the bright pictures of wildly active dogs up to all kinds of shenanigans.

The words are basic and simple so they are easily accessible to the early reader. And, of course, kids have always liked the drawings in this book. This was a favorite of mine as a child and it is one of the first books my son read on his own. He now enjoys reading it to his brothers.

As I read this book, I remembered back to when I was a child. The very first time I read this book I was filled with anxiety. I always told my mom to get to the end because I really wanted to see what the dogs were up to. This book has a various amount of imagination inside of it. I recomend that parents should read this book to their children.

This book covers all of the prepositions so your child gains an understanding of what it means to be over something, under something, in something, out, etc. This covers the ground that many kindergaten classes are studying.

My daughter is 5 and just starting to read. This book's magic is that it delivers an exciting, funny story with such few and simple words. When I read it to her I read it like it is the funniest thing I've ever read. We laugh and laugh. Now she is learning to read the book because she likes it so much.

I LOVED this book as a child, especially the scene where the dogs are all sleeping. It was fun seeing all the different sleeping positions and laughing at them and I begged to have it read over and over again. It is no different with my little one and tonight, it went to bed with him. You know you've done a great job when a child takes the book to bed. There's no better point than that! This is such a darling book, full of surprises, dogs driving fast in sports cars to get to a party, and a girl trying to get a boy ("do you like my hat? No, I don't like that hat.") The surprise in the end with all the different color dogs in the tree having a party is a particular favorite as well. This one is a must for your library - it is just tons of fun!
