Glen Beck gives us an honest view of our current political situation. There's lots to think about and not necessarily the way the media presents our situation. Overt lies are presented in a way that helps you make up your own mind, getting a view of the manipulation that is going on.

Glenn Beck's Common Sense is really not common sense at all. It is a poorly
disguised effort to play on a well-known pamphlet from U.S. history to gain some credence for himself. Highly presumptious. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-14 16:14:14 EST)

Why doesn't Amazon take the route ConAgra, Geico, Procter & Gamble, GEICO and Progressive have done by pulling their advertisements from Glen Beck?

This book is a MUST read for every person on this planet, not just Americans. I think everyone should have the chance to read and then decide for themselves; do we really need such a large group of public servants interfering with every aspect of our lives? Why doesn't government just get out of our way and allow the free markets to evolve naturally and either become successful, for the good of all of us, or fail on their own. People have lost sight of how this greatest of all countries was born and this book will help to educate and remind us all of our true heritage. We all have the potential to become the very best we can be and to continue to enable this wonderful country to be the very best in the world, but not with the current government infested with the self serving and corrupt politicians that have decided for everyone else that we need "change" to socialism. That leads to misery and destruction of our hard earned freedom and liberty that was won by the blood and sweat of people with true unselfish character who valued freedom more than their own lives and wealth.

Glenn Beck's Common Sense: The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government is a book I think most Americans can appreciate. Don't simply dismiss the message because of the messenger. By doing so I believe you are doing yourself a great disservice. Do you feel like the country has gone crazy over the last several years or decades? Do you often feel you are alone in those thoughts? If so, take comfort that you aren't alone. Mr. Beck lays out a well thought out case that we as a country are hurtling out of control and that We the People need to stand up and take the country back.
Mr. Beck is hard hitting to both Democrats and Republicans, essentially making the case, and I for one believe it to be valid, that both parties are taking us to the same place, which is a place that is not sustainable. Some of the examples he uses are both mind boggling and infuriating at the same time. For example, when you sit down and actually look at how the districts are drawn and the great lengths both Republican and Democrat incumbents go to keep power it is sickening. If you believe it is time to do something to take our country back from Washington then this short read is an essential first step. A friend gave me this and I did try to read it. At least I now better understand where all the conspiracy ideas seem to be sprouting from lately.
Unless you really want to believe in those theories I can't imagine this book resonating with anyone. It is based on made up "facts" and designed to play on the paranoid. I don't know why so many Americans want to believe that only they are smart enough to see the truth in made up nonsense but there is certainly a market for it. I didn't make it to the end of the book and returned it to its owner wondering why he would want to waste his time with something so off the mark. I have never seen Mr. Beck's show but now I know I don't want to. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-14 16:14:14 EST)

I read this book because my grandpa recommended it. I love my grandpa and wanted this book to have some kind of redeeming points that I could talk about with gramps.
Unfortunately, this book was one of the most poorly written, ill-conceived pieces I have had the displeasure of reading since leaving junior high. Straw man arguments? Check. Vilification of political opponents? Check. Disregard of the facts? Check. And even if the ideas contained in the book were honest or thoughtful, the whole thing is simply poorly written. Grandpa, you owe me dammit! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-14 16:14:15 EST)

This book is loaded with the sense that makes Glenn Beck one of the most popular wisdom teachers on TV. For those without the time to watch him each day as he picks apart the foibles of the moment here is something to carry around with you to keep your mind clear and alert to psychobabble.

This book was very disappointing for me.
Content: Beck constantly talks about his "plan" to correct what has been happening in Washington, but ultimately, he offers no plan at all. A few positive notes, though: he does not whine in this book nearly as much as he does on his radio show, nor does he once again dredge up the minute details of his struggle (twenty or so years ago) against alcoholism. Style: Beck is not nearly as good a writer as Mark Levin, or the superb Jonah Goldberg (I would recommend reading the latter's "Liberal Fascism", and also a free copy of Paine's original "Common Sense", rather than buying this book). "Common Sense" should be required reading for all freedom loving Americans. Glenn Beck points out the basic principles of our form of government and makes it clear that so many of us today are too willing to let it go.
A short read and very entertaining for such a serious issue. Buy the book and share it with others. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-14 16:14:14 EST)

So many people have already rated Glen Beck's "Common Sense" that I will be brief.
Common Sense picks up the intensity of Levin's "Liberty and Tyranny" and adds to the call for action by the American people to wake up, to stop being apathetic regarding their values and the ideals of our Country, and to get off the political sidelines and begin holding elected officials more accountable. Beginning with Obama, but also including all the rubber stamping Congress members who have enabled his socialistic encroachment on the basic tenets of our Country. And, return to the tenets of the Constitution, reclaiming basic individual liberties along the way. Beck brings his signature intensity to every page. He provides historical context regarding the hypocrisies of the "Progressive Movement" and joins it with current day examples of the failings and corruption of our political system. A positive about Beck's book is that he is an equal opportunity basher. Bush and the Republicans take a hit for their mishandling of the government and diminution of the people's trust in their government. However, it is Obama who takes the major, but well documented, hit. Beck is a curious, but paradoxical concoction of passionate advocate and hyperbolic showman. His work is well researched, but his delivery can often undercut the depth of his information. Too often he comes across as an ultra fear monger and modern day fallout shelter salesman. And yet, he compellingly delivers the goods regarding tyrannical government on his show every day, and here in "Common Sense." You either believe him or you don't, however, it's hard not to see him as a modern day Paul Revere. While Beck provides a reading list for the advanced education of his readers, I noted that "Liberty and Tyranny" was not included. I would suggest that readers begin with that book, then proceed directly to "Common Sense." They will most assuredly become better informed, less apathetic and more demanding of their government. Mr Beck has captured the truth of what so many citizens in the United States are feeling, regardless that they speak their minds or remain silent. A people silent in fear of breaking that unspoken societal rule regarding discussion of religion and politics. He goes far beyond that PC of behavior so engrained for decades upon decades in the American Citizenry and captures the true heart and soul of this Republic and it's disdain of personal and political corruption, of an elitest minority of elected officials and their criminal counterparts. These are representatives who routinely lie to their electorate/constituents for their own personal career building, pocket lining, and abdication of responsibility to their job titles.
In my personal opinion, they are renegade employees that need to be fired and replaced before the next election cycle because they are moving quickly to upturn every sector and paradigm of this republic before 2010 and the next election cycle. The content of this book is easy reading that anyone can understand and relate to. It awakens witin every American citizen the desire to dig further for the truth to becoming more enlightened that OUR EMPLOYEES, (politicians) have been and still are escalating theft in office and breaking laws, of every aspect in ethical and moral decay to the destruction of this republic while abridging the laws of this nation set forth by the US Constitution and Bill of Rights. It awakens the sleeping giant within the individual and collective of citizens of this nation, who truly understand and/or want to understand more, that this experiment begun by the founders of this nation is being swept away by criminals cloaked in the guise of upstanding politicians, That They AREN'T. Approach this book and embodiment of truth with an open mind. Set aside political ideologies and allegence to seeing and truly understanding the broader perspective picture that we are in the throws of having our natural human rights set forth in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights stolen by a minority of politicians who obfuscate understanding in voluminous legislation of legaleese and daunting overbearing diatribe of disengenuous babble, scripted by some of the worst of Orwellian mentality, long before they gained political majority. Take this challenge. Understand clearly what is truly happening and has happened, how we got here and how we're going to by law turn this around. This book is that breaker awaiting re-set within every American Citizen and the American society that truly awakens once again that sleeping giant of this republic. Allow yourselves to have your mind opened and the power within you, your constitutional right to be heard, turned back on. With the enlightenment and content of this book, Embrace your natural human rights, your Civil Rights, your Constitutional rights and foremost your Common Sense. What a sad thing that any tree had to die to print this tripe. There are no facts that this man did not manage to get wrong, he doesn't even try to pretend that he knows what he is talking about (Thomas Paine, indeed... either he never read anything by Thomas Paine, or worse and more likely he did read it, but he just wasn't capable of understanding it.) I want my hour back that was spent reading this lunatic fringe ranting.

Beck may present himself as over the edge, but his reasoning is sound, based on our Founders'. Our government has grown steadily out of control, and we need to reign it in.

Many of Glenn Beck's ideas belong in the 18th century with the worst attributes of the founding fathers--their racial prejudices and backward ideas on women. But had Glenn Beck been alive at the time of the revolution, he would have been in Canada with the Tories agitating against the revolutionary ideas that were at the heart of our insurrection against the British. There was nothing "conservative" about those concepts. The founding fathers were all about change and enlightenment, at least in terms of 18th century knowledge. I wish Amazon.com would join other corporate entities in refusing to advertise for Glenn Beck since it only promotes his racist and inflammatory remarks that diminish our collective dialogue rather than define it upward as did Tom Paine.

The book is a very good quick read, hitting on the basic problems of our current political system in America. Beck seeks to put aside political parties' self-interests in the interest of upholding the Constitution and limited government. He shows how both Republicans (Teddy Roosevelt and George W. Bush) and Democrats (Wilson, FDR, and Obama) have created a class of people that are above the common law the rest of us have to follow and have expanded government powers beyond what any Founder could have fathomed.
Among the topics in the book he covers how the US Tax Code is used in ways to intimidate people, Representatives use gerrymandering and campaign finance laws to stay in office for decades, and how our children and grandchildren will be paying back our debts (i.e. stimulus package and cash for clunkers) for years to come. Overall, a quick read that will open your eyes to what our politicians have been doing for years. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-14 16:14:15 EST)

This book hits the nail on the head!!! It is straight forward and in your face. If you want sugar coating go some where else. Glenn hits you with facts and blunt conclusions that are very much on target for this country. I recommend this book for any one that desires serious and blunt examination to the path that this country is heading.

This is a great book. Glenn Beck's Common Sense: A Case Against an Out-of-Control Government is the perfect example of how a book should be written by a conservative nut job. I sometimes sit awake at night wondering what went wrong in his childhood that made him end up like this. Perhaps he was dropped on his head, or maybe he just didn't have many friends. In either case, it is apparent that Glenn Back should not be able to produce any publication or media to influence and scare the American people. Frankly if he has so many problems with how this government is being run, he can leave to a find a country that better fits his needs. My suggestion is Never Land!

Wow, what a good book. I was sad that it ended so soon. Short in words, but long in facts. Glenn Beck is just hitting the tip of the iceberg in terms of exposing the agenda of those who have taken over our 'representative' democracy.
Read this book, even if you don't think you'll agree with Glenn. It will be good material for your next YearlyKos Konvention :) It also includes the original Common Sense by Thomas Paine, which is worth reading. Common sense isn't common any more. Read the book to find out what we can do about it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-13 17:14:52 EST)

Well, I just finished Glenn Beck's "Common Sense," which, according to Beck, was "Inspired by Thomas Paine." Beck has clearly never truly read Thomas Paine and knows very little about him, his history, or his beliefs. For many readers, pages one to seven seem to make a lot of sense. There are some general and specific criticisms about government spending and corruption in Congress I agree with. Who wouldn't? But Beck's attempt to connect his neo-conservative positions with Founding Father Thomas Paine is shockingly ignorant of both Paine and American history. Beck uses this book - and Paine's name - to criticize "Progressivism," blaming it for much of what ails the country. Sadly, this is a complete distortion of Paine's legacy. While the extent of most Americans' knowledge of Paine is "he wrote Common Sense, I teach his work in class every year. I use "The Crisis" and selections from "The Rights of Man" and "Age of Reason." If you want to understand Paine and his vision for America, you should read them. Beck doesn't understand Paine, but he does want to use the credibility of "The Founding Fathers" to promote an anti-government message. Far from opposing "progressivism," Thomas Paine is one of the original "Progressives," though at the time he was called a radical for his liberal views. He is commonly associated with the origins of American liberalism. "Common Sense" was one small piece of his work - it was a pamphlet simply designed to encourage revolution against Britain. Paine later clearly outlined his vision of what he thought American government should look like. This is where Beck falls off the apple cart. Beck uses this book to openly criticize progressive taxation, public education, social security, and "the progressive agenda." But readers should know something - Thomas Paine was one of the earliest advocates of progressive taxation, even drawing up tables and rates. He was also the first proponent of the estate tax. And in Agrarian Justice he proposed a democratic ideal to combat poverty and income inequality by taxing the wealthy to give jobs and "grants" to young people. He also proposed using this system to provide government-sponsored pensions for the elderly. Historians cite Paine's Agrarian Justice as the earliest call for a national old-age pension - ie. Social Security. He wanted to tax the rich and give money to the poor. He joined Thomas Jefferson in strongly advocating universal tax-supported public education, believing it was necessary to promote an educated electorate and was a necessary way to combat poverty. Paine also sought a federally guaranteed minimum wage, and long before Woodrow Wilson, Paine urged the establishment of, and US participation in, global organizations to help solve international problems and avoid wars. Yet, this is all lost on Glenn Beck. Beck criticizes Progressives for leading the United States away from its original purpose. He even goes as far as chastising Teddy Roosevelt. That's pretty bold for a guy whose only contribution to the United States has been as an entertainer. Has Glenn Beck completely forgotten "The Gilded Age"? While Beck, for whatever reason, is disturbed by progressive ideals, he fails to concede the un-democratic conditions that led to the desire of Americans for the rise of progressive reforms. In fact, if you look at American history from 1776 to 1900 and from 1900 to present, you will see that Beck is right in that progressives shaped America into the country that it is. It's one with a thriving middle class, reasonably safe food and water, no child labor, forty hour workweeks, etc. If Beck wants to dismiss Progressives and return to life under President McKinley or Harding with robber barons running the economy and the atrocious work conditions chronicled by Upton Sinclair in The Jungle, he's crazy. Beck has never known what it would be like to live in an America not guided by the leadership of progressives. Instead, he lives comfortably in a nation defined by liberal and progressive policies, and then audaciously challenges the very notion of the peaceful prosperity they provide. Beck ironically praises "our political leaders" that could inspire us to "defeat Nazism and fascism," and then goes on to criticize that leader - FDR - as helping destroy the country. Beck doesn't even concede that the United States would never have been able to wage WWII or build the Atomic Bomb or put a man on the moon or wage and win the Cold War if it weren't for the large-scale ability of the federal government to raise revenue, mainly through progressive taxation. He reviews the original foundation of the United States government in the Articles of Confederation, acknowledging that it failed because it was too weak, and then heaps his praise on the Constitution. However, he doesn't concede that the significant difference in power given to the federal government in the Constitution was the power to levy taxes. Even conservative Edmund Burke knew that "the revenue of the state is the state." Thus, weak revenue gathering equals weak government. And a weak federal government would never have been able to respond to two World Wars, the Cold War, and two Iraq wars. Beck goes on to criticize Hillary Clinton and the public education system for "suggesting the community has a vested interest in what each child is taught." Who doesn't believe that? He offers no alternative proposals for how education should be carried out. Though I hardly believe he is proposing the end of public education. That would be so un-Jeffersonian, another Founding Father. On page 99, Beck shifts from a scathing criticism of public education to promote God and religion in public life. This is completely disingenuous in a book "inspired by Thomas Paine." Paine was a deist who vigorously opposed Christianity or any organized religion. He often called himself an atheist. Paine was very anti-Christianity. He vehemently opposed the government supporting religion in any way. In fact, in his later life, he was practically exiled from the country because of his criticism of religion in America. A few other criticisms: On page 61, Beck paraphrases Barry Goldwater's quote, "A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have," and doesn't even give the original mind credit. On page 17, Beck paraphrases the well-known "You can't save the poor by destroying the rich" quote from Reverend William J. H. Boetcke and again doesn't give credit. Historians and English teachers call this plagiarism. Finally, Beck writes a mere 111 pages, and then re-prints all of Paine's "Common Sense" which is in the public domain - and he charges $12.00 for the book. What a sham. I'm glad I checked it out of the library, but I hate that my library spent taxpayer funds on it. They should have waited until it was in the bargain bin for $.99 That's why Beck is disingenuous. He is a hack, and while I occasionally enjoyed some of his earlier work - I've read all three of his books - I am sadly disappointed in this mis-use of one of America's Founding Fathers. Beck says Americans do not know their history, but he is one of them, and with this book he is counting on their ignorance. Ultimately, he is From what I know of American history, Thomas Paine would have been appalled by Beck associating their two ideologies, and he would have bitch-slapped Beck. And Beck would have deserved it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-13 17:14:52 EST)

This should be required reading in junior high, high school, college and each year after. Everyone of age should read it prior to going off to vote. The information is not slanted toward Republican or Democratic parties; rather, it exposes both major parties for their lack of respect for the American Individual. We all need to get back to basics or watch our nation get flushed down the toilet.

This must have been one of the oddest books I've ever read. To my surprise, Glenn actually does get a lot of his facts right, at the beginning of each chapter (his accuracy on founding father's words, deeds, writings, and intent however were clearly not researched), laying the groundwork for his repeating calls to attention...before he descends into improbable/impossible conspiracy theories involving all parties. On one hand he paints politicians as stupid, uncaring, and selfish (and there's alot of truth to that) but then only pages he later grants them the incredible intellect and foresight required to orchestrate these far fetched worldwide, decades-spanning conspiracies to shackle the common man and make him a plebe, to take control of his light bulbs, garbage, and every other aspect of his life. Which is it Glenn?
So, on one hand, yeah, it was nice to read the first half of every chapter (although I felt like he was just telling me what I already knew...probably because it really IS common sense) but since he seems to fall off of the cliff of insanity at each chapter's end, I'm left wondering if this guys REALLY UNDERSTANDS what he's talking about and if he really BELIEVES in anything other than wishing for the "Good Ole Days". It seems like most of the book is geared to make you wish for "the way things were", you know, before all of these conspiracies from Bushie and Obama. Like, back in the 70's and the 80's when politics were pure and this country was God Fearing and Patriotic. Glenn's "the way we were" experiences must be limited to spending too much time watching TV families growing up rather than paying attention to what it was really like back then. "The way we were" that he paints never really existed outside of hollywood and "the wonder years". The only chapter that really concerned me was the one on 2nd Amendment rights. It reads so much like a call to arms for revolution that he realizes that he should take steps to reign his readers in to make it clear that he is not advocating that they take violence in their own hands...then justifying that if things don't change, we should take violence into our own hands. WTF? If you grew up in and have a mentality that still wants to live as if you were a child in 1950,60,70,80, you'll love this book. Otherwise, your awareness of time, space, society and reality will probably win out and realize it just seems more and more like the rant of a child without his blanky. [...] The book claims (NEWS FLASH!!) that essentially all politicians are in the pocket of vested interests and are destroying the country.
In the spirit of Thomas Paine (whose writings are conveniently included in the book), the author hopes to inspire the masses to take back their country. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FOOD FOR THOUGHT -- Wouldn't it be nice if the USA could just declare bankruptcy (like GM and Chrysler)? We'd eliminate all our debt (ie, we'd be free from Chinese ownership of our country), and we could start over with a clean financial slate! Maybe we could even do a "CASH FOR BANKERS" sell-off of our inventory of unwanted (read irresponsible) financial institutions. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-13 17:14:50 EST)

I read some other reviews and it's all already been said. I just wanted to go out of my way to give 1 star. This guy is simply awful.

While one may agree with the theme the writer conveys, his style leaves me cold. The whole thing is an endless rant which has passed from my Kindle into the archive. Couldn't finish it.

Very well written and easy to read. Clearly points out many problems we are facing today as Americans and shows how we have gotten here. He offers common sense, hence the title, advice on how we can all work together to reclaim our country and return to what our original Founders intended. Not slanted toward a "Right" or "Left" view point, but simply a conservative, Pro-American, view point. I highly recommend this to anyone who calls themself an American.

Glen Beck's common Sense is a good book that every one should read because it tells it how it is. He walks it like he talks about it, and that's what this country needs. What we (this country) don't need is Socialistic rules that wasn't why our four fathers fought wars. When will we wake up people? When will we stop whats happening right now, right here. I don't know who T. Paine was but he sounds like a good man from the past. Beck is pointing us in the right direction, which is a full 360 from where we think we are now, but we are not their yet. The question is are you living in the USSR or are you living here in are country? That's the kind of question this book asks and answers. Thank you a nd God bless our troops who are in harms way. Thank you.

I wish there were a way to rate with negative stars!
Glenn Beck is either delusional or just out to make money, and in the most reprehensible way -- by victimizing all the other no-nothings out there! He and his ilk are doing our country SO MUCH HARM, and there seems to be no way to stop him and his fellow travelers. So sad - and alarming! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-13 17:14:50 EST)

Amazing book outlining the direction America is headed. Gives you up front facts and reasoning as to why our Government is out of control and where we are headed if we continue to allow Government to run our lives. Everyone should own this book, if they truly love their country and stand for freedom. Our founding Fathers left English rule, to come to American and establish the freedoms that we are handing back over to the Government today. Seems we have lost our common sense.

This book is a very concise, well-written handbook to use to review your outloook on the political scene. If you are already a "fan" of the government intervention in your life, don't bother reading this because it will make you furious. But, if you are unhappy about the current trend toward more and more government and truly want to know what can be done, this book is a very small investment for a big return. Must read for informed people!

Please read this book, no matter which political party (or none) you have chosen. Information seems well researched and attributed. Beck's passionate style certainly continues in this writing.

This book is a wake-up call to every American. Our country has gone mad! Our minds have been stolen from us by smooth talking politicians. It is as if we have lost all perspective in the most simple tasks. We have trusted the Goverment and the Goverment has lead us like sheep to the hungry wolves. We need to get our selves up, dust off and use our God given minds and stop all of this nonsense. We need to use our "Common Sense" and take what is ours back. This book shows you how!

After reading Glenn Beck's "Common Sense:The Case Against an Out-of-Control Government, Inspired by Thomas Paine", I have come to the conclusion that we as Americans can do something to stop the chaos that this administration is causing. We need to think for ourselves and not follow the party line. This book is an excellent book to help you to think for yourself. I recommend it to everyone.

As I read this book, I kept saying out loud, "Are you KIDDING ME?!" Sadly, everything in the book is factually true. You may not believe it at first, and the deeper your party affiliation, the harder it will be for you to believe that your party could possibly be doing "those things" too. "Certainly my party isn't doing that!" you'll say at first. But alas, they are. Left, right, (D), (R).... all the same. Each party does not what is right for the country, but what will ensure the gain of political power.
Take off your partisan blinders and read Glenn Beck's Common Sense. See the truth. Realize that while the parties have us fighting each other, they're busy taking away our Liberty. Then, once you're awake, start to ask "What can I do to take my country back?" (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-13 17:14:52 EST)

I wish everyone would read this book. It's not about left or right or republican or democrat. It's about being an american and our government being accountable to the people it serves. We pay them, they work for us. The government should fear the people, not the other way around. This is the first thing I've read that makes sense in quite awhile.
