I was disappointed with this book It read more like a diary than a book to help organise your life, The authors seemed to be more interested in their life than mine. Give it a miss and try Flyladys books if you need help

I have enjoyed reading both of the slob sister's books. "Get Your Act Together" and "Sidetracked Home Executives". I enjoyed the "Sidetracked Home Executives" so much that I read it twice. They offer great insights on organizing your life. They also make it fun and humorous.

I bought Sidetracked Home Executive in 1983 and I did the program. It worked for me as a mother of two young boys. I bought SHE as a gift for a newly-wed friend and "Get Your Act Together" for me. I read the book and laughed and cried as I related to the sisters stories and tricks and tips for those of us who are born disorganized. I like the new format for the card system. I can't wait to set up my box for my new stage in life--empty nest. If you buy both books life I did--read the GYAT book first. This will save you a lot to time when you do your card system. Read the SHE book second and laugh with these two crazy sisters.

No, kidding. This book changed my life. I am chronically disorganized and although I still hate organizing and housework, I now find it bearable because I have a weekly plan and daily routine. I follow the plan in the book in a loose and flexible way and still manage to stay basically on track. I like the fact that you can structure it to meet your individual needs. I've read many organizing books and have come to the conclusion that there are three basic areas to organize: your time, your "stuff" (like your home and paperwork) and your money. This book does a great job tackling time management with it's index card system, daily routines and weekly plans. It also makes decluttering a priority and 1st step towards true peace of mind and order in your life. For me it has taken three favorite books and almost 2 years to get on track. I love The Organizing Sourcebook for organizing "stuff". It's very thorough and also has a step-by-step plan for decluttering your home and getting it organized. Sink Reflections (the Fly Lady book) is great for both time management and organizing and decluttering your things. I use the basic plan in Get Your Act Together and embellish it with Sink Reflections routines and lists. I found the lists and routines in Sink Reflections to be more thorough and applicable to my life, but that's not to say that Get Your Act Together won't be perfect as it is for someone else. I highly recommend this book to anyone who really wants to get organized and stay that way!

Was very pleased with quality of book and service to get to me. Great timing to my house! Love ordering books with Amazon. After reading the book, I realized that it has some good ideas, but there is a lot of cooky stuff too. First time invented philosophies of sort of alter egos to confront. A little too strange for my taste. But some really good organizational ideas. Thanks.

I hesitated to buy this book since some of the reviews said it was basically useless and probably just an attempt to make more money on their part. But I LOVED their first book, Sidetracked Home Executives, so I decided to give this one a shot.
While I agree that there's a lot of fluff in this one, there are also plenty of solid, helpful tips for optimizing their organizational system -- they wrote this 10+ years after their first book was published, so they'd had plenty of time to work out the kinks. Don't make this your first "slob sisters" purchase -- read Sidetracked Home Executives first -- but if you find that their cardfile organizational system works for you at all, I recommend getting this book to fine tune the system. I liked the first SHE book and even started a local support group of SHE's. I recently picked up this book and found The Slob Sisters learned some things in the 15 years of experience since they wrote "Sidetracked Home Executives." I found the changes they made to the system to be GOOD ONES. I especially liked how they flat out tell you what to put on the cards - I'm a SHE because I have such a hard time making decisions! The fewer decisions I have to personally make, the better. I really liked the section on getting the husband and kids more involved - this is a topic everyone in my SHE support group yearns for answers on! I agree with some of the other reviewers that some of the personal stories got a little long, but overall I think this book offers a better system than the first book. The first book offers more in-depth insight on WHY we are so disorganized, but the system improvements in this book appeal to me.

A friend of mine loaned me Sidetracked Home Executives about 15 years ago. I LOVED that book and it changed my life. I lost that book and decided to buy it again, a couple weeks ago, along with Get Your Act Together. Being a huge fan of their style and humor, I couldn't wait to see how Pam and Peggy revamped the card file system. Boy was I disappointed. They are starting to sound more and more like the B.O.'s (born organized) that they claim not to be!
They talked, in the first book about how pointless is was for the born disorganized to make lists and now the new card file system is nothing more than cards filled with lists! There is something really satisfying in putting one job per card and being able to move it to its next spot because it was done. I got a lot out of that system. However, by putting in all these little lists on the new cards, I have to remember to write whether it was done or skipped.... It seems like more of a hassle to me. And then I can't just move the card to the next day (if it was daily) because so many of the other jobs on the card were done. There isn't the humor of Sidetracked Home Executives and it wasn't insightful either. It sounded like almost every other organization book out there. Now, for those of you who haven't read the first book (now 20 some odd years old) this could very well work for you. If you've read Sidetracked Home Executives and have followed *that* card file system, this system might still work for you but I would venture to say you'll still go back to the old system. I guess there is always the possibility that the 2 systems could be worked together. I'm still trying to figure out if I can do that in any way shape or form...so this Get Your Act Together book won't have been a complete waste. I think the "Slob Sisters" should go back and re-read their own first book to remind themselves of what it was like to be disorganized. They've been organized too long. They can't seem to relate as well to the disorganized anymore. They even have a day planner out for almost $100.00 that is for nothing *but* making lists. Anyway, long story short...or not, I think the old system is the best and this book doesn't have near the information or inspiration of the first. I could relate to them in Sidetracked Home Executives but they don't seem to relate to the born disorganized anymore. Needless to say, I won't be buying any of the other books, tapes, organizers or other things they sell on their website. The first is the best for me. I can see how it could work for some. Please understand this is only my opinion. :) (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:11 EST)

Their first book was actually helpful, and a bit of a novelty. It offered a different approach to cleaning that was geared toward the genetically disorganized, designed by genuine slobs. This was refreshing compared to a lot of the organizational books written by the naturally and freakishly organized trying to feign empathy for their inferior readers.
However, this book doesn't have anything new to say. I felt like I was wasting time reading it because so much of the book was devoted to the authors going into detail about their personal family problems, which really doesn't help the dishes in my sink, laundry on my couch and the Polly pockets on the floor waiting patiently to embed themselves in an unsuspecting foot. I get the distinct impression that this book was an excuse for them to make more money. But, it does rehash their original ideas, which were all useful. Their first one was their best one, but this is better than nothing. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:11 EST)

If you are a SHE- (Side Tracked Home Executive) you already know it... the dryer holds wet clothes (you forgot to turn it on)... At 6:00 pm you panic wondering what in the heck to fix for dinner... Your kids are your favorite people in the world, but they often end up searching for their cleanest dirty socks to wear to school.
The thing that sets us apart from other slobs is that we really do care about our home and family- we would rather be effective and capable, but for some reason we just can't keep on task long enough to get it done. Pam and Peggy are the greatest- they've been where we are, and have respect for the chronically disorganized yet highly creative people we are. Following their advise is a sure way to turn things around. Fun to read- down to earth and promises not to turn you into some sort of crazed neat freak! You already know if you need this book, if you don't- pass it by, there are plenty of us out there who can benifit from the copy you leave behind! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:11 EST)

I am not one to read many books, though I do enjoy it....this one is well worth taking the time out of your crazy schedule. The stories have striking similarities to many women I know, myself for sure, and the suggestions are practical things that make a difference. If nothing else, my attitude has improved to the point that people are commenting on my happiness level these days. I'm looking for other books by the SLOB sisters....BUY THE BOOK, YOU WILL WANT TO KEEP IT!

Okay, obviously some of the people writing reviews here are not the kind of people it was written for. ("why would I need a card to tell me when to change the kitty litter?) We all know that lots of people in the world cannot even imagine that some people struggle with the simple routines of life. They think that people with messy houses just don't care. Really, even those of us who struggle sometimes can't understand why we can't manage those things that seem so simple for other people. Well, if you are the kind of person who can't understand why someone would need a reminder to make up the bed, do laundry, etc. -- you just won't get this book. If you are the kind of person who hates living in chaos but can't figure out how to get out of it, you just might love this book. Also, I highly recommend Sink Reflections and The Messies Manual.

I read this book about a month ago and the difference in my house is amazing! Also, I am so much less stressed and seem to have MORE time. I have read dozens of these books in the past, but this one did it for me. Highly recommend. I'm buying it for a friend of mine.

I have a small collection of various organizing books, partly because I have a tendency to let things get very messy periodically, and partly because I find it rather satisfying to straighten out the mess (it can be quite a creative exercise). Of all of these, this little book is probably my least favorite. It's hard to point out one reason, but some of the features of the book that I found less than appealing include the long chapters that ramble on and on about their personal stories, the rather hyperbolic, even evangelistic tone, and that peculiar whiff if you will of 'mommie with a house full of smelly children (diapers or sneakers, depending on age)' thing.
Perhaps this aspect of it doesn't appeal because I don't have kids yet; yet, I do like other organizing books that are written from a homemaker's point of view such as the ones by Deniece Schofield or FLYlady Marla Cilley. Anyway, if you like books with lots of tearful personal anecdotes, this book will appeal to you. If not, and if you want to try their general method, try the excellent FLYlady web site first (and her book, Sink Reflections, if you like.) If you want a book with lots of hints about how to organize your kitchen, plan menus, deal with the kids' gear, and such, Deniece Schofield's Confessions of An Organized Homemaker is it. If you want a book that goes beyond keeping the house picked up and the hubby and kids running smoothly however, try a more general organizing principle book such as Julie Morgenstern's Organizing From the Inside Out. Happy organizing. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:08 EST)

This book has most, if not all of the same stories the first one did, and assumes you have read the first one (for example, this book mentions colored index cards, but only the first book, Sidetracked Home Executives, tells you which color to use for what). Use white cards and just use a colored dot or sticker, or not.
The big difference is that it puts several jobs per room on one card, instead of each job having its own card, as in the first book. You would no doubt come around to doing this eventually just having the first book as you fiddle with the system. As to the "infraction game" (leave stuff out, have to pay to get it back), I don't see it working for some or even many families, just as allowances don't work as a chore motivator if children are smart enough (or jaded enough) to see that someone will eventually feed the dog, even if they don't, and I doubt that some parent will make their child pay to get their homework back if it gets left on the kitchen table. The book is okay, but definitely read at the library before you buy it. You might like it better than the first one. I did not get much out of the Buzz Word cards, for example. I do like it better for the streamlining of the original system. As others have said of both books, their time estimates are 'way off. Something you don't want to do ALWAYS takes longer to do than you think it will. Leave off the time estimates and just think, "This job first, do not stop till it is done. On to the next one." I think the system works better for you this way. You can also adapt this system to a To Do List, or even put it on your computer or handheld if you wish. Sidetracked Home Executives is the better of the two books, imho. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:08 EST)

The elaborate systems of index cards, family motivations etc., promoted in this book will be of no use to the chronically disorganized. We organizationally-challenged can't follow routines and systems! That's the problem! And devising another system isn't going to help us. While it is reassuring to learn that many people are struggling with the same feelings and situations which result from chaos and disorganization, and this book will provide immediate, although temporary, enthusiasm and hope for the organizationally-challenged, the solutions offered will not result in any long term, or even significant, improvement in our lives. Unfortunately, the excitement created by the possibility of FINALLY making sense of the chaos of our homes is not enough to impose and maintain order simply by means of using index cards. People like us have wasted time and money setting up these types of schemes, only to experience failure and frustration again and again, because ultimately they don't work. One cannot change innate behaviors with a package of index cards. This book offers just another superficial non-solution to a deeper problem.

Index cards to organize household chores? You gotta be kidding! What century is this? I don't need to write down "Change kitty litter". I KNOW when that needs to be done!
Plan 2 hours on one day a week for "desk day" (i.e. pay bills, clip coupons)? Please.... I have to keep on top of it everyday, or I will spend 10 hours on it one day a week! And the droning on and on of poems and family problems. I got ZERO out of this book. You will, too. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:09 EST)

I loved this book and am glad I read it. However, the title is misleading as this is more a book about people issues than a manual on organization. The book reassures you that you are not a bad person for being disorganized and that the kinds of conflicts you have in your family are actually quite universal. So it was like chatting with your girlfriends.
Personally I enjoy reading about other woman's personal lives and I enjoy humor, however if you are actually looking for a book on organizing you are much better off with the original SHE (Sidetracked Home Executives) book that they wrote. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:09 EST)

This is an interesting, even entertaining chronicle of how two first-class messies cleaned up their act. They describe how they gradually decided that their lifestyle was not working, and how they eventually reworked it to the point where they were giving advice to others. They show their very human side, as well as their basically warm personalities.
They have a card system for getting chores done, which probably would work for a lot of people. I now use and prefer to-do lists, but the card method is flexible. I used to use a similar system with sticky notes (less durable than cards) before I read this book, and they proved that for them and many others, it works. As with a couple of other organizing books I've read, my main critique is that they don't allow sufficient time to do things. They apparently were stay-at-home moms who are not under the often stringent time constraints many others must deal with. If a job didn't get done one day, it could get done another. But the estimates for any task at any time, in my opinion, simply are too low. Can you clean a floor in 10 minutes? People are different, and have different sizes of homes and so forth, but I don't think I could do most chores (which also include errands to stores and so on) as fast as they can. Can you do a week's worth of grocery shopping, start to finish, in 45 minutes? Car to store to purchases to standing in line to loading to drive home to unload and put away? If one takes the time estimates with grains of salt, the rest of the book is helpful, and since most readers won't be starting from the extreme situation that these sisters did, they won't have to exert themselves as much to dig out. Certainly worth a try. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-25 09:07:09 EST)

I've read several household organization books and although this one is funny, there are better ones out there. (check out "confessions of an organized homemaker".) The organizational advice essentially revolves around the use of index cards and motivational games to get your family to pick up after themselves. While these are good ideas, the last couple of chapters go off course and delve into the authors personal lives and marital woes. A few lengthy, bad poems by one of the authors are thrown in as well. Buy something else.

I think that the authors our very sincere with their techniques, however I find that making an index card for every chore that needs to be done a bit much. It is more complicated than what I would have wanted to get my home organized. However I highly reccomend Sink Reflections. I have done wonders with my home after recieving this wonderful book. The author of Sink Reflections focuses on establishing Morning and Evening routines. And she is always letting you know that you are never behind, yet just begining. And it is Baby Steps all the way. You should check out the reviews for Sink Reflections. And no, I am not getting paid for this in any way, I just wanted to let you know what has and has not worked for me. Good luck with whatever road you take in getting your home in order!

This is a book written by two sisters who used to live in "pig-pens" and together developed a way to bring order into their lives. The targeted audience of the book are women with a family who are desperate to get their house-holds under control.
Therefore, Im probably the only male manager who's ever bought and read this book (actually I was looking for a time-management book and hadnt made a careful selection). Having accidentally bought the book, I decided 200 pages of large print in a small book wouldnt kill me and I might as well read it. Im glad I did. My family (and especially my wife) doesnt really need the book, but we arent perfect either and one can never have enough good ideas in this department. The book really assumes the worst about you (if you arent, all the better) in terms of self-organization and house-keeping. The system that the "slob sisters" introduces is interspersed among a lot of real-life experiences and shared thoughts to show that you are NOT alone with this problem, that you ARE a loveable person, that you REALLY CAN change the mess and that an hours worth of work WILL make a difference (which does not mean that you can read the book, put it back on the shelf and assume that you life all of a sudden will become wonderful). Having read the first part, I wished I had read it as a single male student. Then again, in those days I wouldnt have been caught carrying a book with this kind of front cover out of a bookshop for my life! What really touched me were the latter chapters of the book (including a chapter called "can this marriage be saved") showing how topics like this can undermine family life, how the women of this world often are abused by the men in their lifes without the latter really knowing about it and how these sort of problems CAN be solved. Once again, I think that we as a family are far removed from the extremities described in this book, but it contains food for thought for males working outside the house. Really and truly, this book has improved the quality of my life tremendously. Written by the chronically disorganized, for the chronically disorganized, this book hits right at the heart of the problem and gives actual step-by-step advice for turning it around. Would you believe that I have both of my kids in bed by 9:00? That all the dishes are washed, the laundry is folded and put away, that the dog's been walked, the bills are paid and I know precisely how much money is in my checking account? I kid you not. Read this book, and you too can be sitting at the computer at 9:30 writing book reviews for total strangers . . .completely guilt free!

I won't repeat all the things the other reviewers said, but I will add this: The Slob Sisters have a great idea for getting family members to help out. It's called the Infraction Game, and with it, my living room has stayed spotless! My son, who is ADD and never puts anything without being asked, is now hanging up his backpack and coat, and putting his shoes neatly by the front door. This is without me saying a word! It's a miracle--and I thank Pam and Peggy and the good Lord for inspiring them. We are still incorporating other ideas, and my husband is going to read the book himself for my Christmas present. Highly recommended!

Once I saw this book I couldn't put it down. I felt as if they were peeking into my home and writing about me! After reading many other home organization books and feeling like an utter failure I finally realized that I didn't fail, the system failed. Pam and Peggys book certainly helped me to see that. Their system showed me step by step how to become organized in a way that I understand and they did it without being strict and serious. The humor in this book kept me laughing as I imagined myself in similar situations. I am well on my way to having my home become a warm and welcoming place, my familys haven from the world.

In addition to being funny, light, and easy to read, reading this book was a life-changing experience for me. Although it's written for all sidetracked people, I recommend it also for women with ADD (attention deficit disorder).

This book is hilarious and helpful to anyone who struggles with chronic chaos and a cluttered house. The book and the support found on their website has literally changed my life. They offer hope and understanding for those of us who tend to get "sidetracked" -- and a practical way to get started. You owe it to yourself to try this, especially if traditional organizational books have failed you. You won't regret it.

I thought I'd never laugh (or cry!) harder than I did when I read 'From Pigpen to Paradise' by the same authors- but this book is just wonderful! Pam Young and Peggy Jones have done it again! You get the feeling that they've been peeking in your windows, they're so connected with the chaos that's been going on in your life and home. They share helpful advice for those of us who weren't 'born organized' that will finally convince you that you, too, can have a warm, welcoming home that's a haven from the crazy world out there! The Sidetracked Sisters have been in our shoes and they've conquered the clutter. This book will assure you that you can, too! A 'must read' for anyone struggling with clutter and chaos!

Young and Jones goes through getting you organized in a sometimes funny fashion and they have a few good ideas but in its entirety, this book is very strange. As well as organizational tips, the book offers weight loss advice, bits of religion and seriously bad poetry. Give this one a miss.

I have been trying to get organized for 15 years. I have a whole bookcase of organization books written by people who were born organized that did nothing but make the problem worse (more books gathering dust on my shelf, and more guilt building up). This book is written by two hilariously funny sisters who have "been there". They will use examples that are unbelievably close to home: in fact, they can even tell you exactly what is in your drawer and what to do about it! This is the answer for the disorganized person who has always wanted to be organized, but lacked the skills. This is a beautiful plan that will not have you obsessing about organization, but instead, spending less time cleaning and less time frustrated. This book is an answer to prayer!

Reading about Pam and Peggy's adventures made me realize that even though I was not born organized, I too could have a clean home, with the right tools. The Slob Sister's official Web site is at: http://www.shesintouch.com -- I've met so many sidetrackers like myself at their discussion boards!

This book was tons of fun and incredibly motivating. It's easy to implement! I would love to email the authors and also find out about their seminars. I happen to live in their area. Please help me get in contact with them.

I can't say enough about how great this book is. Not only is it very helpful, it is also the funniest book I have ever read. I will never forget reading it on the bus ride home one day and laughing so hard no sound would come out and tears streamed down my face (the other riders surely thought I was a lunatic). The stories of disorganized chaos really hit home. I got copies for friends and family members who all loved it as well. You gotta read it. I grew up in a similar household situation, where disorganization started in the genes and there wasn't enough strict parental disciplinarian action taken with my sisters and I to curb those impending procrastinational, chaotic habits I feared might be with me forever. Pam and Peggy pretty much sum it up when they say the other writers of regular "organizational" books often have no idea HOW bad it can get. This one is for those of us who are so disorganized to the extremes, it's hard to know where to start getting it together. It's so refreshing and inspiring to see two women who really came up with some great, creative techniques for organizing their lives, and I have definitely applied some of their methods which really work. Read it and you won't be sorry.

This book was written by two women were self admitted -over the top "SLOBS", and who learned to transform their lives, and offer a simple plan on you can do the same. They write with a sense of humor, hope, and "been there, tried that" approach. Even if you don't take their practical suggestions, the attitude they impart is well worth the price of the book - to lighten your heart and mind about the "mess" in your life.

I felt so close to the authors and just loved this book. It is informative and so funny!! I would love to know if they are still organized and still writing books. This made me look for other books written by them. The book is informative and very helpful.

This book was definitely worth reading. There are a lot of good ideas for getting rid of the clutter along with making life easier when it comes to cleaning and the bonus of a good laugh.
