I love Rolando's work. After reading his other books I decided I need to have every one. All though, you may see some of the same tips and explanations in different books I feal they are important keys and perfect reminders. Not only do his books teach you about lighting and posing they teach you how to work and talk with your subject which I find is most important part when doing fashion and glamour photography. The wisdom that he shares I have put into good use. I have been able to put it towards my own photography business doing portrait, glamour, fashion and wedding photos.

This is a very good book on glamour photography. Well-written and cleanly organized, it covers a number of aspects of glamour photography that will appeal to both the beginning photographer and the more advanced. It is not a step-by-step cookbook, but rather a guide to help you think about what you are doing, why you are doing it, and how you can do it better. It is a good starting point for learning about lens selection, lighting and other essentials of glamour photography. In addition, Mr. Gomez includes a few really helpful tips that can help save money on equipment without sacrificing quality. I strongly recommend it.

Mr Gomez has done a great job at creating a simple, easy-to-follow guide to glamour and nude photography. With everyday props and sets, he shows the reader how to create interesting and provocative images of models.

I had the opportunity to meet and speak to Mr. Gomez shortly after the release of this book. He is very talented and very knowledgable. At the same event, I met the model on the cover of the book. She explained that Mr. Gomez is a true professional and helped to launch her modeling career.

Reviewer Permalink
Not a fan of the writing style nor layout of this book. The photos are very non remarkable for the most part. The photographer describes his style in the book, it's not mine and perhaps I'm biased? But I don't think skin should be THAT yellow. There's a time and a place for flash gels but imo most of the photos in this book are way overboard, very jaundiced looking.

As for the homemade fluorescent light setup mentioned in other reviews. Unless you wish to spend time in photoshop removing the very distracting and very strange eye reflections, don't bother. The light looks...uh...fluorescent, I suppose, but not particularly soft fluorescent as there's no soft box or any other filter in front of it. With 4 catchlights in the models eyes in examples from the book I would definitely alter that plan. Plus a 4x6 hunk of plywood with a hole cut in the middle to insert your camera limits mobility drastically with such a light. It's a one trick pony and that trick isn't even that great.

I read this book and in fact have read it several times. It gives some excellent advice on photography from using lines and form to direct the viewers eye to working with lights and models.

The glamour images are excellent and will inspire you to try harder. The only down side to this book is it leaves you wanting more. There is so much information in such a little space, I finished thinking there had to be more.

As a long time professional photographer I feel I can always pick up something new from any book on photography I read. Unfortunately this was not the case. There were very few really top quality images in this book and they were mixed with a lot of poor images. The equipment that he used was very limiting, it was like he was pushing certain brands. Normally I would say it may be good for beginners but in this case I feel they would be lead astray. If you are going to write a book about photography every image should be of top quality, and you should explain the alternatives of the different kinds and brands of equipment available. You should explain how you are using this particular piece of equipment and why you are using it, and what effect it produces. I was so disappointed in this book I sent it back for a refund, and I have a very extensive library of photographic books, in the hundreds. Don't waste your time buying this book.

'Lite' simply means all the basics are well covered. The author opens his mind and reveals his thought and action processes. All glamour shots that are shown give detailed camera settings. Many 'tricks of the trade' are given. A very valuable resource. Keeping brevity in mind, he does mention several times in the publication that you will need to go to a more defined source if you need detailed information regarding a specific photographic arena. I got this publication in addition to 'Lighting the Nude'. I think they compliment each other very well. The first 'tells' you how - the latter 'shows' you how.

Reviewer Permalink
Very deceptive title for a book with no lighting setup diagrams or easy to follow descriptions. A few worthwhile tips, but essentially an extremely unrealistic approach for the average amateur. You would need a full crew of assistants and a nearly unlimited budget to accomplish what is shown and described in this book. If you're a pro this book may be worth your time otherwise look elsewhere.

This book has some decent images but quite a few that are startlingly bad. Also there are no lighting diagrams or real info on how to recreate any scenarios, and a focus on specific brands of equipment rather than general types of modifiers. Skip it.

The information in this book was pretty good and I did walk away with a few new things to keep in mind. However I was disappointed that much of the photography was either not particularly well shot, or lacked variety in the style in which they were shot. This is subjective though, some people might love the photography in this book, but I didn't personally find it appealing and didn't really find anything that would inspire my own work in the future. I'd give it a 3.5 if I could, but a 4 will have to do.

The title of this book led me to believe that this would be a simple to undersatnd book, keeping things on a basic level. I found good information in the book, but this is not for the beginner. The book talks about using helpers to hold light reflectors, etc. This is way beyond the simple do it yourself basic book that I was looking for. This is for the more advanced person looking to improve on their already basic knowledge for this type of photography.

I like this book as it really gets to the point and keeps it simple for beginners. However, at times it was almost too simple, and this is not simple photography. The quality is excellent and the models are beautiful.

What I would have liked is a bit more technical analysis on the shot. He does explain in most what he used, but a graphical would have been better. Also, this assumes you have all the same equipment, but for a beginner, i don't, and I wanted to learn how to get a good shot with what's available or easily obtained...window light examples would have been great. Because the title suggests that you could do this with almost nothing but light and a woman, i figured it would be much simpler suggestions and ideas. There is no way you can achieve some of those things he shows through a simple/basic "garage" set up.

Overall, great book, and a good addition to a collection. Just not really aimed at a "garage" amateur or beginner. I do recommend it with that expectation.

This book is excellent, I refer to it constantly and have post-its stuck all throughout the book so I can return to especially important parts. The author shares his significant experience in this field and this information will be particularly useful to photographers who wish to begin or improve in this photographic genre.

But this book is for experienced photographers, and although beginners may get something from it the book is clearly written for those with some experience in general photography. Not necessarily professionals, but at least intermediate amateurs.

If you are looking for a "cookbook" style book, one that tells you exactly how to place the model, the lights, etc, this is not that book. But you will get plenty of tips and techniques to make this a worthwhile purchase.

Reviewer Permalink
For anyone desiring to improve their Glamour/Beauty photography, this book is a must have tool. If you are looking for a step by step detailed tutorial on how each shot was created, this is not the book for you. However, keep in mind that a step by step tutorial will not make you a great photographer, it will make you a cheap imitation. Don't expect any single book will give you all of the answers. Read all the books you can on the subject, attend workshops, and learn from each one.

What makes you a great photographer is using your own unique vision and creativity coupled with lessons learned from the masters.

Rolando's book provides a great overview of Glamour Photography along with tips and tricks, and insight into his own preferences and style. The lessons on working with models is invaluable and probably more important than how to pose them, that is, if you want to succeed in this industry.

I am a pro photographer, I have attended Rolando's live Glamour workshop, I have purchased and read his book. Do I follow everything he does step by step? No. Does his teaching enable me to see and understand things differently and create images in my own style? Yes. Am I a more successful photographer as a result? My bank account says YES!

The writing style and the layout wasn't impressive. Many of the pictures didn't actually seem that great to me.

Most interesting part of this book for me was about homebuilt fluorescent lighting rig. However, shots lit this way looked quite unnatural.

I hoped that this book will tell me more about "why this shot was done like this" not just "this shot was made with that camera and that WB preset, etc".

Although I found the book interesting to read, I wasn't very impressed with the writing style or the layout. Also, although there were some nice photos in it, many of the ones he used to illustrate a concept didn't actually seem that great to me. For example, the shots with the infinity pool (pool on a ledge with ocean behind) looked pretty fake as the wave patterns were completely different in the pool than in the ocean.

He also talked a lot about his homebuilt fluorescent lighting rig which is basically four tubes in a square pattern. However, it was very easy to tell which shots were lit this way as the square pattern reflected in the model's eyes and looked quite unnatural.

Anyhow, in summary, not bad, but you may be slightly disappointed as I was. I would have liked more shots showing how the lighting was set up.

I own quite a few photography books, mostly glamour, and several basic "portraiture" and "lighting technique" books. Garage Glamour by far is the best I've read of the bunch. While it took me 2 weeks to read the other books (a page or two here and there) I finished his in 3 days...the information he provides just really makes you want to go out and practice! This book covers all elements from the finest details of the model, to how to create a great rapport with your clients, to lighting set-ups and every small detail of shooting glamour. Above that, it's filled with gorgeous images that include full detail on equipment used and image information. It's helped me volumes and I openly recommend this book to anybody.

This is compact and well written guide is based upon the experience of a well credentialed photographer (Gomez).

It is a useful soft cover book which is well written, detailed and is generously illustrated with quality images. There are a substantial number of "live" behind the scene images which detail the technical aspects of the lighting setups needed to reproduce images similar to the examples.

As well as the technical aspects of lighting and composition, the book covers other useful topics such as lens selection, posing, expression and the commercial aspects of glamour photography.

Possibly the only improvement that the "junior" student of the genera could hope for would be some lighting diagrams to complement the example images.

Save your dollars for something a little more informative, images were very 70's 80's and inanimate, pity some of the models looked as if they might photograph well too! Quite a large amount of similar images shot at the same location with an infinty pool and lots of lighting gels. Looked to be shot on an early digital camera as a lot of the images were not really up to the standard that should be. Plasticky skin etc.

I recently was drawn back to serious photography after a hiatus that was primarily based upon raising a family and attending to my career. My passion for great photography never died, rather it lay dorment waiting for the opportune moment to be revitalized. Catching back up to current technology has been a daunting task.

Refreshed and ready to learn, I purchased this book in hopes of fast tracking my learning curve. Yes, I'm capable of teaching myself, but my life experiences have demonstated that if you really want to learn a subject, let someone who has mastered the craft teach you. When it comes to Glamour Photography, Rolando is that person. His book is filled with both practical and applicable information that will accelerate your learning curve. This is not a step by step guide to photographing women, per se. If you are a beginning or intermediate shooter, Rolando's Garage Glamour will give you the foundation to build upon. When you raise the camera to your eye, you'll be more aware of light, shadow, leading lines and solid composition.
I was happy with the book and followed up with a workshop. I'm glad I did. Rolando's a great guy. He's is teacher, story teller and accomplished photographer all in one package.

If you are a hobbyist, guy that like to look at girly pics, go drool over girls at so called photo clinics...then this is the book for you. The work in it is far from professional but descriptions are those from a vogue shoot or something. There was way too much ego boosting from the author, way too many gear descriptions of his sponsors lighting and I just feel like I wasted my money. I did not get around to reading it till after the return policy at amazon expired so I am stuck with it. Trust me, there are a few other books out there on shooting glamour and fashion, this is not one you will want in your collection if you intend on taking your images seriously.

Rolando Gomez is a photographer who has experienced almost every type of scenery, from the dangers of combat to the horrors of Rwanda to up close and personal with U.S. Presidents. It is clear however that his overwhelming favorite genre is Beauty and teaching his students how to photograph it. In his book, Garage Glamour, Rolando schools us in the art, theory, and practical aspects of how to take photographs of beautiful women. Given the assumption that the reader has some foundation of photographic knowledge, Rolando presents the information necessary to create the masterpiece photos of beautiful women with the glowing skin that we've all come to admire. His presentation of photo infomation is factual in nature, however a close examination suggests it comes with feeling from his heart. If this is a skill you've considered learning, this is the book for you.

This book discusses the concepts behind successful Glamour photography and how to properly light the model. It does an excellent job of meticulously annotating the setups used for each of the shots shown. I learn something every time I read through it.

Simply put-this is a great book in the realm of Glamour Photography. I have been a photographer for more years than I would like to admit and I found gems of wisdom on almost every page. Whether you are a novice or experienced picture taker-you will benefit from this book.
I recently had the pleasure of attending one of Rolando's seminars and while I had read the book several times-I still learned more about lighting in the seminar.
Rolando Gomez has an extraordinary passion for his craft and this book draws on his years as a photo journalist and top glamour photographer. The book is weighted toward lighting and the ways to achieve the lighting effects so much used in the fashion/glamour industry. He shares many of the secrets that have made him famous. And he does it in a straight forward easy to follow dialog.
There is a small portion of the book that details how to make a glamour portrait set-up using common fluorescent bulbs found in any "Home Depot" type store-worth the price of the book alone for this "tidbit". I got to use this set-up in his seminar and it was truly an excellent tool.
You won't be disappointed in this book-the pictures are excellent, the instruction superb.

Reviewer Permalink
Glamour books have been springing up all over the place since the digital explosion. I've thumbed through most, bought a few, and this one, along with Successful Glamour Photography: A Guide to Professional Techniques for Film and Digital Photography, is one of the few texts worth parting money over. I say buy them both.

What are some of the things wrong with the others? Start with dry reading. I'm a year into the photograph vs. snapshot thing and some of the others were boring (even patronizing) even to me. Some are printed by publishers who seem like they dont want to spend money printing big, colorful photographs in a photography book. Some seem like they were just taped together by a publisher to get a piece of the growing digital glamour market.

When compared with many other texts, GG floats right up to the top. Photographers probably know that Amherst has no problems printing big (albeit sometimes thin), colorful photography books. Gomez writes in a chatty style that makes just as easy to read as to thumb through. He writes from a position of authority- I suspect that few people in the industry will argue that he is not one of the major glamour players over the past few years.

Even so, Gomez has no problems sharing pics from other photographers. One workshop I went tongave me the pleasure of learning from Dennis Keim (dK), and some of my favorite pics in the book are his.

Many of the names are familiar to me, even with my limited time in this field. If you are serious enough about improving what you do, spend money and some time with Rolando's or JT Smiths Supershoots workshops ...some of the names and faces will become familiar to you also. Maybe this is from a biased viewpoint, but it was nice to turn a page and find faces I had in my portfolio, compare them what I had done (or not done) and learn something from it.

Good read, good pics, authoritative, good value for the price. Excellent companion or premier for workshops in general and JT's or Gomez's in particular.

Anyone in or breaking into photography knows that the toys, the gadgets, the accesories can bleed a bank account dry. Against that backgound, this is little money well spent!

Now that I have had a chance to peruse the book, I can say I only have one bad feeling. Amazon must have dropped my book or the box it came in because a corner is dented in. Ok, so, I am a cry baby about incidentals. I have been told that I am a tad anal also, so, yes, corners bother me. Especially when you lend someone a book and they dog-ear a page. Argh...

Enough, the book is as promoted. The images are all crisp and varied. Not a one of the images is out of place. Great job there, from Rolondo's introduction and his perspectives to the conclusion of the introduction, you have already been given a feel for his excitement and energy. Throughout the book, he is insightful and not pushy. I didn't feel like I was being told that this is how to do it and there is no margin.

I have done many things and I have learned that as much as one person may believe there way is the only way. I know, short of the simplistic, that is not true. The feeling I received from reading this book is that his ideas are open, and I did it quickly and will go back and read it much slower. The explanations on technique and the end result are very clear, but the ways to it are many. I enjoyed the lighting section immensely, especially the poor man light setup. Being that I have always used fluorescents and anything else I could find. I have, since getting books and reading other's works as well as other's from the glamour 1 site, purchased reflectors and such and begun experimenting on my favorite model Rembrandt (not the toothpaste). To sum up these last few sentences, it is good to know that someone comes right out and says you don't necessarily need the most expensive equipment to produce a great end product. Thanks for that.

The book deals with the various elements that go into glamour photography and moves into the different equipment needed. My understanding is awakened in areas I am lacking and I already see how I can raise my photography a few steps. He touches on some areas that he doesn't go into great depth but it is enough for me, anyway, to get my mind thinking about how I look at it and to change some of my basic ideas.

Now, since I ordered this book last Feb., I have bought many others. Most of them make great coffee table books for older friends. Each, excepting one or two, had something of use in them but also some that I found, well, basically, not to my liking. This book will go on my list as a very good resource. And I still like the cover, she is a very petty girl.

I am not sure what Book Kenny ol boy actually read but to underscore what this book really is by saying the negative viewpoints are other than valid is hypocracy and The NAACP should get a load of this one. Now of course I am sure the critics didn't mean to rustle the feathers of his boyfriend or shall I say brownringfriend but when you deal in porn, it should be not so hidden in whimsical old school jabber. Isn't it freedom when one can respect criticism without falling back on the good ole' boy network to come save ya. Shame the book had potential but to toot ones own horn is one thing but to have his horn tooted by falsetto photogs is quite the toot to boot. Just some advice from an old koot with a hole in his boot.

The advent of digital photography has dramatically changed the view of many people on nude photography. There was in the past a background fear of exposure, of pictures sent off for development and viewed by any number of people, of extra copies being made, of pictures showing up in unexpected places, of the thought police deciding that this picture violated the obscenity laws. With digital photography all of these risks go away. As the author says, 'This is an awsome revolution for people who have a passion for glamour but, at the same time, want to be discrete.'

This book is the result of a series of workshops that the author has taught which cover all aspects of glamour photography. He covers clothing, accessories, props, picking the foreground and background so they add to the beauty of your subject. Posing the model which can accent the models best features and conceal any problem areas.

Although this is not a large book, it is a surprisingly complete introduction to the subject.

Let me first start off saying I read a couple of the negative comments, and it seems to me that the negative commentsmade about the book being poorly wriiten and outdated techniques come from some one who probably did not read the book or has some other issues. As I read the book it seems pretty well put together and has a good flow. One of he things that has always bothered me about how to books, or informative books are they have always been hard to read. The information is presented as a school textbook. Mr Gomez's book came across as a one on one conversation. It starts with describing the elements of a glamour photograph and it builds from there. Mr Gomez explains the differences between digital and film. he then moves on to the elements of composition which most intermediate - advanced photographers know, but it is always good to review. ( you may have forgotten something) The book then moves on to rapport building with models and posing. Then we move on to lighting. where one reviewer states the techniques are out dated. I disagree, some of the lighting ideas have been used for years, yes, but they are the same same lighting that is used for fashion magazines, playboy magazine,etc.. Mr. Gomez even gives you an idea on how to build a light set up that normally cost $2000.00 The book then goes on to show ways the reader create and develop their own style. Finally the images in this book are outstanding, they also give tech info on how they were created.I believe that this book should be in every ones glamour library.

I don't see the need to go into detail but it serves the public no good. It is poorly written, with outdated techniques and just an excuse for old men with over active libidos to get pretty young girls to take there clothes off. Picture takers or photo nerds who use there cameras as a way to get close to girls they normally wouldn't have a chance to be in the same room with. I am disgusted with this rubbish. WHen has amazon decided to start selling porn. Garage Glamour porn plain and simple.

This book offered great insight into what it takes to turn out great glamour shots in a wide variety of conditions. While I learned that I will not have the funds to light every shot I might want to take (many $K's for a really well rounded studio lighting set-up), I also learned what I can do without investing half a year's pay. The shots showed a good mastery of choosing lighting, poses and settings that flatter the subject. That made me much more willing to trust the advice of the photographer. This is a good read if you want to start your own business, or just want to get some good ideas on how to create some memories to please both you and your significant other.

I have to admit I was a skeptic. I mean anything from this genre is pretty lame. Ain't that right Jerry A. I must concede the best parts in this book are ones to masterba#2 to. Pleasuring oneself to this book is well worth the excellent pricing offered here on amazon. It is truly an ED nullifier. It also makes for good reading on the crapper. What more can one say but hats off to the writer for allowing me a chance to jerk it to the photo shopped face on the cover, gasp another smooth faced bimbette to splurge on. My only complaint is the cover should have been made of plastico for mucho easy clean up. Bravo, job well done.......

walks the tight rope from shock jock mania to corporate schlock undigested by the mainstream as glamour or in this viewers eyes un-glamourous. Technical writings plagerized from product literature written in a coy but lucid fashion in no way makes this shock jock one to follow. One can shutter at the high speed delivery of the information and one can equally be offended by the maleness of the comments regarding model submision. The connect the dots on how to best get a model in what one might say a good light...........seems like dating 101 to this old geezers mind........or better yet to get the model in no light at all. What fascinates is the boldness of the writers ability to show how full of himself he is and yet come across so indullably ignorant to the reality of his trade. It is dull reading in a dull world. Just like the media they will package it, sell it and some will buy it. I for one don't buy it Rolly.
