For a Few Demons More

Despite dating one vampire and living with another, Rachel Morgan has always managed to stay just ahead of trouble . . . until now.

A fiendish serial killer stalks the Hollows, and no one living in or around Cincinnati—human, inhuman, or undead—is safe.

An ancient artifact may be the key to stopping the murderer—a mysterious relic that is now in the hands of Rachel Morgan, fearless independent bounty hunter and reckless witch. But revealing it could ignite a battle to the death among the vast and varied local supernatural races.

Rachel's been lucky so far. But even she can't hide from catastrophe forever.

With her action-packed Hollows series, featuring former bounty hunter--and mistress of the dark arts--Rachel Morgan, Kim Harrison has become one of the hottest authors in the incredibly popular genre of sexy supernaturalism. In her latest Hollows tale, For a Few Demons More, Rachel unleashes all kinds of undead fury on the greater Cincinnati area when she tries to track down a serial killer. I like the world, I even like the lead Rachel, and I'm interested in how the various intertwined love lives will resolve - but this book needed a tough editor to do the following: rip out 200 pages of pap, get the tension back into Rachel's decisions between her male lover, and wannabe female lover, remove the obvious plot devices that were something of an insult to the reader, and get the fear factor back into things. Rachel deals so casually with demons that will take her soul, yet is more concerned about a glance at a taunt set of buttocks that when it happens, it grates, then irritates, then finally insults the reader. It could and should have been better than this!

This book was actually painful to read from the beginning, but I trodded on hoping it would get better. It didn't and that is why I am immediately going to return it. It wasn't just one facet of the story but everything...lesbian issues that are obviously not what the main character is into and add that with storylines that are introduced before the other storylines are even made clear. It was an uninteresting blur of plots, characters, and in the end..words.

This book was my favorite of the series so far. Their was a definite focus on Rachel's relationships, which I loved, and added to some really exciting as well as tender moments. The element of suspense kept me engrossed clear to the end, and a lot more questions were raised that leave me wanting to read the next in the series. The story took a much more serious turn that caused (and will continue to cause) a great deal of grief for some main characters. It added a great depth to Rachel's character and will make the rest of the series that much better. There were a few minor disappointments (I keep hoping Trent will pull his head out and change his murderous ways!), but overall this was by far my favorite book of the series. Loved it!

I can't say enough about this book or this series. It has wonderful characters, in a fascinating "alternate" world (the Hollows) that Kim Harrison has created. My only hope is she keeps on writing! I am impatiently waiting for the next book....

This book is not the best in the series, but is still better than most paranormal/romance/mystery novels. It is right up there with Sookie Stackhouse series.

I couldn't put this one down. I really enjoyed and got into this installment of Kim Harrison's Hollows series. The character development is outstanding and what I was hoping for in the last book. I felt like we got to see Rachel, Ivy and Kisten grow and evolve some. We found out what was happening with the focus and what effect it is going to have on everyone's life. As you can probably already tell, you need to read the first part of this series to understand what is going on. Ms. Harrison tries to fill a reader in that accidently bought them out of order but to truly get how the characters grow and develop you need to start from the beginning. I loved how Rachel tried to make sure of every loophole in dealing with the demons yet there were still twists and turns that she doesn't and the reader doesn't expect. I will warn people that one of the lead characters has a strange ending but I like how Ms. Harrison is willing to go out on the limb in this series. I would highly recommend this book to Laurell K. Hamilton and Christine Feehan readers and anyone else looking for a great series. Just read the previous books in the series first. ;-)

I've been reading this series since the beginning. Love the story line, love the heroine's attitude. Rachel's a tough, smart & savvy witch that's not afraid to get her hands a little dirty. And who knew pixies could be so dangerous? I can't wait to see where the series goes.

If you've been reading the Kim Harrison "Rachel Morgan" series, this book won't disappoint you. Somehow, the books in this series keep getting better and better, and it would be a daunting enough task topping the first one.
I have the next (and newest) book in this series on the way to me now, and I'm impatiently awaiting it's arrival. I'll put whatever else I'm reading on hold when it gets here, and devour it rapidly.
If you like the Stephanie Plum character in the Janet Evanovich novels and the Harry Potter stories, the Rachel Morgan character is sort of a blend of the two. She's a private investigator/bounty hunter who's also a witch, and she runs into considerably more bad luck than Sephanie Plum.
Kim Harrison writes a very fast moving, entertaining book that is EXTREMELY difficult to put down once you start one.

I had picked up a copy of this book because Amazon put it on the similar list, and I thought I would give it a fair shot. I only got 50 pages into this tripe before I gave up and fed the book to the dog. What did Harrison do with the money her Mom gave her for writing lessons? She must have a pretty narrow audience out there. Magical is right-like trying to grab moonbeams. Empty, vacuous, thin, and mostly boring; a true waste of a dead tree. The story never got a hold of me, and it just made it more exciting to do my hair.

KH is a very strong story writer who knows how to pace her writing. Each of the books in this series I've read to date (1-5) are action packed, fast paced, and have engaging characters. It was especially nice to have Jenx (spelling? sorry, audio listener here) back in this one. The reason I titled this "Nearly lost me.." (and gave it a 4 instead of 5)was the ongoing anst between Ivy and Rachel - but I'm glad I held on for a great finish to the book. Have just purchased book 6 in the series and am really looking forward to it!

I got into this book like all the others: good read, follow up on the characters, humor, action, etc. Unfortunately also more struggle with Ivy. (I don't understand where that is going or why it is there at all.) But that's o.k., because we got a new interesting demon and more happening to Trent to compensate. What left me totally depressed, dissapointed and, yes, angry was the bad ending. The story is not finished. I see to many lose ends. And HOW could she do this to my favourite character? Bad things happen to everyone, but not like this to main characters without good reasons if you want to continue a series. It is about trusting the author to love her characters as much as readers do. I am not sure if I trust this author anymore and therefore I am cautious about buying the next book.

This is the fifth book in the 'Hollows' or 'Rachel Morgan' Series by Kim Harrison. I have become more impressed with every book in the series I have read. I definitely advise reading the rest of the series first. It's well worth it and it will help in understanding all of the characters and their relationships with each other.

Kim Harrison is one of those rare authors whose writing is multi-dimensional. She creates characters that you love, loathe, and even identify with. Her setting, The Hollows, is intriguing - strange but familiar. While classified as fantasy there is also mystery, adventure, action, romance, suspense, horror, and just a little sex.

For a Few Demons More is a very good book. It's difficult for me to discuss this book in any detail without risking a spoiler so all I will say is that Kim Harrison's character development is amazing. I have to admit to being disappointed with the direction the plot took at the end, but when an author can make you feel such an emotional attachment to their characters that you become angry when bad things happen to them - then you know what good writing really is.

I am eager to find out what will happen next. There are so many subplots and twists in this one it's almost too much. I eagerly await the next book in this series.

All the charaters that once-were interesting, are boring/anoying here. In the first few books I liked Ivy, and in the last book I liked her a little more, but here she blew. Her "girlfriend" is a bitch to Rachel, and they all know she's jealous of Rachel (erhm, why???) yet Ivy still lets her stay at their house (church, really). Jenks is just boring here, where he was absolutely FABULOUS in the previous book. Rachel is unbelievably self-pitying. I only got a little over half way through the book until i just had to STOP. the only thing that had kept me reading it was the hopes of reading some good Trent Kallamack scenes. After over half the book, we'd still only seen him, what, twice? for a very short time. I don't know why this book got so many good reviews. The writing is poor and it apears that no one bothered to edit it. example: "His eyes were blue - no brown" or something like that. Things like that appear ALL OVER THE PLACE. Also, Rachel acts like a whore by having to tell us how sexy EVERY guy is. really. yuck. Sorry to write such a negative review, but after seeing that its overall rating is 5 and a half stars (come on people, its not THAT good!!) I felt i had to share my opinion on how BAD this book is. I'm not going to bother with the next in the series, or anything else from this author, in the future. You want some truly GOOD WRITING? Go read Kelley Armstrong. She's earned her fame.

I only discovered this series a month ago, and at first I was very impressed. The first three books were excellent, well plotted, descriptive, an imaginative new universe, I was pleased to find a new series that I liked (after the Anita Blake series went completely down the toilet). I have been reading them back to back. I was surprised to find book four moving out of the Cincinnati environment, and I began to feel that Ms Harrison was losing control of her plot (why was Ivy waiting on the dock? why did Rachel insist on being in the truck with Peter when we never hear from him again?), but still, there was some good character development (I love Jenks). Book 5 started well, but then went completely down hill. The plot almost doesn't make sense, several characters are reduced to cardboard walk-ons, and there are several jarring editing errors. Rachel is not even behaving consistently any more, and by the end of the book I was really starting to lose interest in this series. I will try book 6, but if it is the same then I think that's it for me.

This was one of my favorite series. Yet the author actually managed to kill the series more effectively than Laurell K Hamilton ever could with the Anita Blake series. In fact Harrison killed it in such a way, it will never revive my interest. First she killed off or made unavailable every male character I liked. Alright, on occassion that can be pulled off. If there is some plot dragging things along and it's the last book in the series. I won't like it, but I won't hate it. But when the plot is largely based on the relationships between her characters and their growth... I couldn't quite believe it. She actually got rid of every male character I didn't like too. Second I have always mildly disliked Ivy and no matter how hard I tried I could not wrap my mind around Ivy and Rachel as more than friends. Though that has not yet happened I still feel the closer their characters drawing toward that conclusion to be unrealistic and written in such a way it encourages absolutely no interest on my part. Having had a friend who wrote romantic erotica at one time, (yes with all female characters) I can safely say Kim Harrisons editor should be shot for letting this go to print. It was not worth buying but if you feel the urge to read it go to the library. I personally feel like I should be paid to even touch it.

I Never heard of Kim Harrison, but one of the books I received when I joined the SciFi book club, was an omnibus of the first three books in this series. I started reading the book, and was immediately absorbed into the complex environment of the hollow. All that, till I arrived to the segment, where Rachel is transforming herself into a mink. Ms Harrison had described the mink as a RODENT!!! Most of us, of course. know that a mink is a CARNIVORE!! I was ready to quit the reading of the book, but luckily, the story line was stronger than my repulsion! :) Great series, with vivid and absorbing story lines. The heroine is a strong person (even if she does not recognize it), full of compassion and wit. All the surrounding characters are equally interesting.
MS. HARRISON, PLEASE CORRECT THE MISTAKE IN FUTURE EDITIONS!!! Or, if you want to stay with a rodent, you can put in a chinchilla. Another animal who is used in the fur trade. UNFORTUNATELY.

I got turned onto Kim Harrison about two and a half years ago while walking aimlessly around the bookstore to kill time. That fateful visit has given me love and addiction for her, JR Ward, LA Banks, and Laurell K. Hamilton. I swear, I go into a panic if I can't get their paperbacks on the first day they're released in that format!

That being said, I have to say that this is, to me, by far the best in the whole series so far. The depth and range of the emotions that I felt reading it were so much more than in the other books. I really felt like I was going through everything that Rachel was going through. The worst part, though, was the death of Kisten. Even though I was knew it was coming (though I was trying not to admit it to myself and I was holding out hope that it wasn't true), it still seemed to blindside me and hit me in the gut. I very rarely cry at books, but this had be bawling. It was almost as if I was experiencing the death of my boyfriend. What made things worse for me was the extra short story at the end where he was alive and with Rachel...it seemed almost unintentionally cruel to publish that after you had just "witnessed" his death. I would have thought it more appropriate for perhaps the ending of the last book.

Anyway, just my two cents on the subject! Superb book and I wish it were next year so I can have another one to tear through! :)

I was a huge fan of the first few books of the series. However, this book is horrible. I am really happy I didn't buy the hardcover, as originally planned.

One of the strengths of the earlier books was the way the realistic way the characters were handled. They were flawed and capable of both good and bad. So, a sore point in this book was the way Trent was written. In the previous books, he always straddled the morality line. He was ruthless (but possibly for a good cause),yet at his most lonely and vulnerable, you could empathise with him. In this book, he inexplicably crosses the line, and shows that he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. I went from loving to hate him, to even liking him, to just finding him a detestable character.

I am now sick of the way the relationship between Ivy and Rachel is being handled. Harrison has stretched this issue out long enough, and sadly there is still no resolution at the end of this book. Rachel needs to make a decision once and for all whether she wants to be with Ivy romantically or not. It's also frustrating that every other character in the book keeps telling Rachel that she needs to be with Ivy for Ivy's own good. I find it odd that Rachel goes back and forth between pursuing a long-term relationship with her roomate and noting how good looking every guy that she interacts with is. Really. Down girl, down.

Finally, the whole storyline does not seem to be advancing at all, and Rachel's character doesn't seem to be showing any emotional maturity as time passes. She never seems to learn from her mistakes. It's all becoming very tiresome.

I don't see myself wasting any more hard-earned cash on this series.

****Spoilers*****

I was a huge fan of the first few books of the series. However, this book is horrible. I am really happy I didn't buy the hardcover, as originally planned.

I didn't have a problem with the author killing off a major character, because I didn't think Rachel and Kisten made a good couple (I liked Kist and I am sorry he died so horribly, but, he was a bit annoying. Anyone who has a fake accent needs to undergo some serious introspection).

However, I am now sick of the way the relationship between Ivy and Rachel is being handled. Rachel needs to make a decision once and for all whether she wants to be with Ivy romantically or not. It's frustrating that every other character in the book keeps telling Rachel that she needs to be with Ivy for Ivy's own good. Ivy really needs a therapist, and a bodyguard, not to be with Rachel. It's plain (to me) that any relationship between two self destructive individuals can't last, especially when that relationship is based on the idea of 'saving' someone. I am also irritated by the way Rachel notes how good looking every guy that she interacts with is. Really. Down girl, down.

I was also upset by Trent's actions. In the previous books, he always straddled the morality line. He was ruthless (but possibly for a good cause), and at his most lonely and vulnerable, you could completely empathise with him. I liked the moral ambiguity. This of course no longer exists, since Trent has shown that he will stop at nothing to get what he wants. I went from loving to hate him, to even (gasp) liking him, to just finding him a detestable character.

Finally, the whole storyline does not seem to be advancing at all, and Rachel's character doesn't seem to be showing any emotional maturity as time passes. She never seems to learn from her past mistakes and grow. It's all becoming very tiresome.

I don't see myself wasting any more hard-earned cash on this series.

This book is a major MAJOR disappointment. Alas, another series bites the dust.

I almost didn't read this book, as I had a sinking feeling, based on the slow downward spiral in the series. Unfortunately, this trend has hit a new low with this book.

The actual plot threads are confusing, overly plotted, in most cases not resolved. Almost all the action takes place off-screen (and reported to us later), while we are treated to a series of lectures about how Rachel should have sex with Ivy. Also, the editor/proofers seem to have taken a couple of days off, as the errors (blue eyes - no - brown eyes; you for your; unneeded words left in when a sentence was rewritten; etc.) were shockingly sprinkled throughout the book - unusual for a series this prominent.

Spoilers alert

This series started out great, but each book fell off a bit. The characters, so interesting in the initial book, just didn't develop.

I'd hoped characters that showed promise but were underdeveloped would blossom, but except for quirky, sudden changes, they remained stock characters. Ivy - the tortured vamp friend with angst coming out her pretty little ears until you want to choke her. Kisten, the week, needy vamp lover who never gets a chance to develop. Piscary, the evil master vamp - we know he's evil, because people tell us things he does off-screen. Trent, the conscious-free rich elf scientist - is he good? evil? both? David, the stalwart alpha were. - call central casting! Etc.

I'd hoped story arcs would resolve, while allowing characters to become fleshed out. To be blunt, neither of these things happened. The major story arcs just keep arcing like fireworks, while an occasional new element is suddenly plunked down like a dead fish.

There are all sorts of little ends sticking out. When I start going - wait a minute, that couldn't have happened - there wasn't time - why didn't he say something to her - etc. - there is a problem with the book. For example, Piscary is let out of prison to catch Al because "Rachel won't catch him," says the news. We are to believe that in the time it takes her to get home on the bus from a party (where Trent, who is a city bigwig, was with her), Al leaves that same party, creates havoc, the city goes wild, yet no one calls Rachel. Instead they leap to a conclusion, have a city council meeting, and get Piscary out of prison. Long bus ride? Bad plotting.

When there is a story element I find interesting, it gets dropped or put on the back burner, often not resolved by the end of the book. When there is action (Al ripping and burning The Warehouse; Piscary selling Kisten out), we are riding the bus home with Rachel or hearing about what happened later.

Here is the major disappointment - Kisten got built up as an interesting character, intriguing many readers, while Ivy was basically an angsty thorn, pissing many readers off. I was hoping for dynamic development in the relationship with Kisten and Rachel and a wakeup call for Ivy, who was getting on my last nerve. Man, I should have known better.

Instead of scenes, action, and movement in EITHER relationship, we are treated to a series of dialogues where virtually every other character in the book tries to talk Rachel into having sex with Ivy! This is madness! I was expecting little old ladies on the bus and talking dogs in the park to come up to Rachel and say "have sex with Ivy." Each character in effect becomes a sex therapist for Ivy, sagely advising Rachel that she should do it to help Ivy have self-worth. Never mind that Rachel isn't even latently bisexual! Never mind that having sex when you don't want to because third parties tell you to is a bad idea! Everyone wants Rachel to have sex with Ivy. Everyone except the readers! What the heck is this about? It's just insane - oh, and borrrring.

Then the one character I really care about - the one character that is interestingly complex, where you wonder what he will do, where you feel that he and Rachel would make a good team - is killed off by person or persons unknown. Suddenly. As an afterthought - at least that's how it feels. Rachel is left with Angsty Ivy and elderly Jenks, and we don't even know who killed Kisten!

Frankly, I am glad I borrowed this book. I would not have bought it, after the downward spiral mentioned above, and I almost didn't read it but decided to give it a shot. I will not bother again, even if someone offers to lend a future book to me.

for those of us looking for some one to replace the old Anita Blake-- she has arrived. Rachel Morgan is the bomb she has it all the magic the baddies and the we can't forget the awsome pixie Jenks he and his 54 kids can add some comic relief. these books have it all. The Hallows is a well thought out setting for all of these well written action packed adventures to happen.
