| Focke-Wulf Ta 152: The Story of the Luftwaffe's Late-War, High-Altitude Fighter (Schiffer Military History) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
From the time of its appearance in 1939 the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best fighter aircraft of the Second World War a masterpiece produced by chief designer Kurt Tank. In 1943 he developed a new fighter aircraft based on this successful concept. The project soon deviated far from the original Fw 190 concept and as an honor to the designer it was designated the Ta 152. The great performance potential of this fighter was obvious from the very first prototypes of the Ta 152A and Ta 152C. Unfortunately, however, production was limited to a few examples. But at the same time Focke-Wulf was developing the Ta 152H high-altitude fighter which, powered by the Jumo 213E and equipped with a pressurized cockpit, was capable of reaching altitudes on the order of 35,000 feet and speeds in excess of 430 mph. A few Ta 152Hs saw action at the beginning of 1945 and they made an excellent impression on their pilots. Compared to the older fighters they exhibited significantly better flight characteristics and performance at high altitude. The Ta 152 could also stand up to the best Allied fighter aircraft, such as the American P-51 Mustang. On account of its unfamiliar shape the pilots of Bf 109s sometimes mistook it for an enemy aircraft and attacked. The heavy Allied bombing at the end of the war prevented production from beginning as planned, and as a result only a very few Ta 152Hs could be delivered. With the aid of a large number of photographs some previously unpublished and drawings, this book details the development history of the Ta 152, one of the most advanced fighter aircraft of its day. But it also illustrates the hopelessness of Germanys efforts late in the war to deploy advanced aircraft in large numbers.

This is an excellent reference for a little-known, late-war german fighter. As such, it is excellent in that it gives all proposed versions and their relative characteristics, design, testing, and production data as well as the limited operational missions of this aircraft type.
This is a *reference* work on a single aircraft. It should be understood as such and the work is not intended to be entertaining. It is very well researched and data is presented in great detail. In it's intended niche, it is very good. This would not be a good read for the casual reader of WWII or air war history. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-03-17 01:07:25 EST)

Kurt Tank is one of Germany's most famous aircraft designers. Creator of the FW-190, this plane was the logical development to meet the challenges of Allied P-51 and Spitfires. This fast, heavily armed aircraft was available for production as early as April, 1944, but only 43 were built. It was too late to change the war either way, but the Germans would have made the Allied cost much higher.
This is an excellent book. High quality glossy pages, clear B&W photos, tons of line drawings. There are photos of the interior, engine, statistics and data that shed light on this warplane. The narrative gives you a good insight to the history of the development of the plane from 1939-1945. Only drawbacks - no color plates and some of the technical documents are in German -In a book this price, Shchiffer Publishing should fix this. There are more famous aircraft of the war, war winners produced in greater numbers. But this is a real tribute to the potential of the German Aviation industry. I highly recommend this book for all serious aviation buffs. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-16 02:00:47 EST)

It's all here. The definitive series on this great fighter plane the Fw-190, culminating in the Ta-152. A necessary addition to your library.

This is the aircraft that has a special place in my heart ( beautiful lines ). Dietmar Hermann has written 3 great books on the fighter and they cover the Focke Wulf 190A, the Focke Wulf 190D and this book, the TA 152. Fascinating to follow the development of this great aircraft in these 3 books. They are all well documented, many high quality photo's and drawings, very accurate descriptions and you will even find the original factory drawings. In my opinion these 3 books belong together on your bookshelf.
I'm happy they are on mine ! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-07 06:37:06 EST)

Finding information on this plane is not that easy. Of all the books I have bought on the 152 this is the best. I highly recommend this book to any TA-152 enthusiast.
