Janet Evanovich and Michael Connelly: Author One-to-One
In this Amazon exclusive, we brought together blockbuster authors Janet Evanovich and Michael Connelly and asked them to interview each other. Find out what two of the top authors of their genres have to say about their characters, writing process, and more. Michael Connelly is the bestselling author of the Harry Bosch series of novels as well as The Poet, Blood Work, Void Moon, Chasing the Dime, and the #1 New York Times bestseller The Lincoln Lawyer. He is a former newspaper reporter who has won numerous awards for his journalism and his novels. Read on to see Michael Connelly's questions for Janet Evanovich, or turn the tables to see what Evanovich asked Connelly.

Michael Connelly Connelly: Let's get the business out of the way. What's Finger Lickin' Fifteen, the new Stephanie Plum novel, all about and what brought you to the story?

Evanovich: I wanted to do a book that featured Stephanie's wheelman, Lula. Lula is one of my favorite characters because she's pulled herself up from hard times and now is just more of everything. Fifteen opens with Lula witnessing a crime, and it all gets complicated after that. We're talking about barbecue gone bad, cross-dressing firemen, dancing hot dogs, etc.

Connelly: You strike me as an author who is involved in every aspect of the publishing of her work. But the output--at least two solid novels a year--suggests otherwise, that you delegate all over the place so that you can focus on writing high-quality stuff. So which is it? (And if your answer is that you do indeed delegate, how the heck do you learn to do that?)

Evanovich: You reach a point in your career where the business side threatens to eclipse writing time and you either delegate or power back. I delegate everything but the writing. My daughter and her staff manage the website, the fan mail, the book tour, the author publicity and marketing. My son is my agent and finance officer and chief problem solver. When no one else can solve the problem it gets dumped on my son's desk! I oversee all aspects, but I've had to learn not to micro-manage.

Connelly: We have an author friend in common-- Robert Crais--who has steadfastly refused to sell or option his series character Elvis Cole to Hollywood. On the other hand, I've flogged Harry Bosch up and down the studio strip. (Interestingly enough, to the same effect--no movies made!) Where do you stand with Stephanie and will we ever see her on the big or small screen?

Evanovich: Jeez Louise, I wish I knew the answer to this one. TriStar owns the Plum franchise with Wendy Finerman attached as producer, and Wendy has been trying to get this sucker off the ground for fifteen years. Probably somewhere in the vicinity of three million people read each of my Plum books, but for whatever reason, TriStar has yet to greenlight the project.

Connelly: Speaking of that L.A. business, do you remember when we first met? Since you conveniently put numbers in your titles, it is easy for me to remember that it was fourteen years ago in L.A. I bet you don't remember the name of the restaurant, which sadly is no longer there. But, luckily, we're still here and my memory of that lunch is important to me because at the time we had probably sold a hundred books between us (not counting romance novels).

Evanovich: What I remember is that what I consider to be my graduating class (you, Crais, and Jan Burke) would get together at all the mystery conferences, and you would be our fearless leader!

Connelly: Did you know that in my most recent novel a very bad man plans to use a Janet Evanovich novel to get close to an unsuspecting, potential victim? It's scary stuff--the plan, not the Evanovich novel. Have you reached a stage where your work is part of the terrain and gets these sorts of little nods here and there?

Evanovich: Every now and then my name or one of my character names pops up and it's usually in the work of a friend. I think it's fun and I always reciprocate...so live in fear.

One of the negative reviews on Finger Lickin' Fifteen says Janet E. has pretty much worn out her series. Really? If Robert B. Parker can work his formula over and over and die at his desk still working it, why not Janet E?

It's the dialogue that makes these novels, not the plot or even the characters. We all know Lula, Ranger, Joe, and Stephanie. Let there be subterranean Sixteen all the way to Forever Forty. They can happily chase each other around for another 25 or so novels. Write on, Janet, until you, too, die at your desk.

Well, I have read all 15 books and all I can saw is at least 15 was better than 14 (I didn't even finish 14). There was an opportunity to move the Stephanie/Ranger relationship forward but it fell flat. Ranger's character was being developed up until 12 and I was hooked...couldn't wait to read 13. Had to wait until 15 to even see some Ranger action and it was dissappointing. Janet needs to bring the flavor back into her chacters..they were so colorful and intriguing. Not so much anymore.

Janet Evanovich has done it again. I have read all her Stephanie Plum books and other books she has written like Plum Lucky, Plum Spooky, Motor Mouth, Metro Girl, etc. She never disappoints. As with other Stephanie Plum books, this was easy to read and kept me interested from the beginning. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

With every new plot and twist, slightly the same as the ones before it, 'Finger Lickin' Fifteen' is yet another 300 pages of mischeif, mayhem and "Haven't we already seen this?". Stephanie and the gang come back once again in Trenton, New Jersey, to entice with a possible end to the series, only this time the plot thickens and it's Lula who witnesses the horrific murder and is persued by felons, psychos and celebrities instead of Stephanie.
With 'Sizzlin' Sixteen' on the way, which is sure to contain yet more familiar plots and twists, I think it's time to shout out for 'Sum it up Seventeen'!

Oh, Janet.
I have followed Stephanie on many adventures and enjoyed them. How did the adventures get so shallow, so fast? I think you lost me for the final time when you decided that if blowing up a car is funny, then torching two cars the next day is twice as funny. And then you decided that Stephanie should be so stupid that she lets the the first and then the second skip escape through a window . . . hey, I'm not even a bounty hunter and I could figure out what would happen.
And Ranger. Since when does "Babe." quality as sexual tension? If I were Stephanie I'd be worried that he is so uninterested in her that he doesn't bother to try. And he wants Stephanie to solve the mystery that is trashing his security business? I guess he's not as smart as I thought he was.
Wow. Next time, write your own material. Give a damn about your characters, instead of just raking in money because you can. If you can't care about Stephanie, don't expect me to. I returned the book to the library unfinished, and that is sad. I'm moving on to authors who think what happens to their characters matters!

Hilarious! A great book by Janet Evanovich. It's I love Lucy set to bounty hunting. Toss in a mystery, a hot man or two, a few bizarre capers and what you have is a delightfully written book.

I got hooked on the Plum series when I was still working. This one was the best yet as far as making me laugh out loud! My husband and I both read the Plum series and this one was very entertaining for us. Lula really comes to life in this story and Stephanie sort of takes a back seat. But put Stephanie, Lula and Grandma together with a little bit of Connie, Joe and Ranger and how can you go wrong? Oh yeah, and how could I forget to mention that Joyce is here too. Definitely worth reading if you are a Plum fan.

I have enjoyed the Stephanie Plum novels from One for the Money through Twelve Sharp. I have been disappointed with the newer novels. I had high hopes for this as I am a Ranger fan. The storyline had great potential, but was lacking. All the characters seemed out of character, and the mystery and romance was flat. I hope Janet Evanovich either returns to the great storytelling she did in the earlier novels or ends the misery of the decline with Sizzling Sixteen.

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum's back for another wacky adventure in this 15th outing of the Plum series. Former hooker, now file clerk, bounty hunter wannabe Lula witnesses the decapitation of celebrity chef Stanley Chipotle and insists the only cop she'll talk to is Joe Morelli, Stephanie's on-again, off-again boyfriend. (At this point, they're off-again.) Stephanie's working part-time for the mysterious Ranger, trying to figure out how someone is accessing his clients' alarm systems long enough to disarm them and burglarize. She's also tracking felons for her cousin Vinnie but proves as inept as usual in this regard. Morelli figures the murder was a professional hit, but the killers have now targeted Lula, who manages to evade them, leaving blown up cars and buildings behind. When a million dollar reward is offered for the killers, Lula persuades Stephanie and her Grandma Mazur to help find them and split the reward.

With each book, Evanovich delivers humor, a zany plot, and outside-the-box characters. The teasing, triangular relationship between Stephanie, Morelli and Ranger continues with no end in sight. Characters are familiar and entrenched in personas and situations that do not change, although remain fun to read.

This installment of the Stephanie Plum mishaps and mayhem series is pretty thin. The same things happened in this book that have happened in every single other one in this series. The usual inability to capture the skips, the cars blowing up, the need to sleep at Rangeman, Lulu escapades, Grandma Mazur -- it's all getting tiresome and redundant. I feel like I've read this book already -- several times. I am tired of reading about the "sparks" between Stephanie and Ranger and between Stephanie and Morelli. The characters do the same exact things in this novel that they've done in the other 14 books. There were few laughs and overall, this was just barely an OK read.
No need to buy it, wait for the paperback or just borrow from someone who has it.

While this entry in the Stephanie Plum series was enjoyable, after having read the entire series it seemed to lack something. I'm wondering if Ms. Evanovich is getting a little tired of Stephanie since there were so many contrivances. Having 4 different vehicles blow up/catch fire, and Stephanie get covered in 3 different substances was a little bit much and it seemed that Evanovich wasn't having fun with this book as much as others like 'Eleven on Top'. These are fun characters, but I honestly thought that in this book, they were just going through their paces, doing what was expected of them. Would it hurt for Stephanie to become a slightly more adept bounty hunter? For Lula to be less one-dimensional? I can't help but think that these improvements would be looked on with great approval by loyal Evanovich readers. I just didn't see any character development in this book. Sorry, 3 out 5 stars for me.

I think Janet Evanovich might want to retire Stephanie Plum and find someone whose previous mishaps are still untold. In this book Evanovich seems to reach into all of her previous novels for the things that were funny, then bring them forward into number 15 not once, not twice, but repeatedly. After I finished it, I was talking to my sister about the book and she said there was one funny part near the end. I agree. It was laugh out loud funny. Once. I have been spoiled by the previous books that had me laughing out loud often. This book was a waste of time in a world where there are too many good books to throw away time on a bad one. Evanovich has been reliable until now. This book is a disappointment.

I read the reviews on Amazon, and I almost didn't buy this one...I am glad I did, though. Of course, it was a lot of the same story ideas, with Stephanie undecided STILL between her two men. But seriously, who would we want her to choose? Either way, the story would COMPLETELY change.

However, I laughed outloud at several spots, and I enjoyed the story line as a whole. The characters were still interesting, and I just love when the spotlight is on her family--it makes me feel like I'm home again.

So, if you are on the line to buy it, I recommend it. It's still that easy, fun loving Stephanie that we have enjoyed for 14 (now 15) stories. It's an easy read, and for me with 3 kids running around, it was exactly what I needed!

Thanks, Janet!

(Hide Review...)  What happened to the characters
Reviewer Permalink
I have been a Stephanie Plum fan for a number of years, but I have to say I have been totally disappointed by the last three books. What happened to all of these characters? Where is Stephanie's sister? How is it that Morelli is suddenly okay with what Stephanie does and even asks her to go out and find the bad guy? Grandma Mazur barely appears in the last book. Ranger has become a moron who can't run his own business. I feel like someone else is writing these books as the humor is sophmoric at best and the plot is totally flat. There was no romance, no sexual tension, no interesting perps to go after. I think I laughed once in the entire book.

Ms. E. you've lost the magic of Stephanie or you gave the writing task to someone else because this is definitely not a good book. I'll try the next one, but if it's as bad as the last three, I'm done!

There were moments where I laughed aloud, even though the humor is generally sophomoric. Farting was a big theme, as well as the usual exploded cars and Molotov cocktails. It seems to me that Evanovich is in a rut. Her plots are fairly thin and poorly executed, held afloat by the jokes and sexual tension. Ranger was a big component in this story, but Stephanie ended up at Morelli's at the end of the book - of course. I also had a hard time swallowing the idea that despite fifteen books, Stephanie is still the worst bounty hunter ever. If she had a brain at all, there would be a LITTLE improvement - such as, her FTAs would quit escaping through windows while she patiently waits for them to pee. What fun is a heroine with no brain? Big hair and blind luck are all well and good, but come on. Stephanie should be getting better. To make matters worse, Ranger - the biggest of all the badasses - hires her to help him do some scouting because he can't figure out why his security systems are failing. In the end, Stephanie discovers the secret, and Ranger was nearly thwarted by two geeky teenagers. The entire plot was hard to believe.

I admit it; I am a sucker for Janet Evanovich's novels. I love Stephanie Plum and all of the other quirky and wonderful characters in this series. I eagerly await each new novel, and while I am not a big fan of the Between the Numbers books, I have always enjoyed these stories.

Unfortunately, this time around I feel it is necessary to say that they are getting more than a little predictable. Hanging out with Stephanie and her friends is still fun, but when you can see events happening a mile away, the novel loses something. I felt that Evanovich, who knows she has a winner in this series, is falling back on a formulaic storyline and generating the same old Stephanie Plum novels, without any spontaneity. I miss being surprised by the things that happen in this series and while I will continue to read these books, I find myself wondering if I should continue to buy these books or save my money by checking them out from my local library. I love the stories, but she is losing me. It is like when I was little and enjoyed reading the Nancy Drew series, after a while I grew out of them because I recognized that they were the same story rewritten over and over again. I don't want that to happen to Evanovich, because her characters and stories are so entertaining, but at the moment I do see that in the future of this series.

I gave this book four stars because while the story is repetitive it is still enjoyable and ultimately I did like it. But I hope we see more originality in the future novels, so I don't lose interest in this wonderful author.

In some ways, I feel sorry for popular authors, since I think readers come to expect something greater than anyone can deliver. In the case of Evanovich, I think some of the reviewers seem to be expecting great literature. Talking about Plum not "growing" as a character? Get a grip, this isn't Hamlet -- it's a funny romance, with a bit of mystery thrown in. Actually, I think Plum HAS "grown" as a character. She seems to be getting better at the bounty hunter stuff, she's clever (in this book, she solves a mystery that Ranger hasn't been able to), and she seems to have learned not to jump without thinking into the bed of a guy she's attracted to. She seems more self-confident and less pathetic (as she is in some of the early books -- less is made of her fear of guns, for example).

This book contains at least two plots: The first plot involves a murder witnessed by Lula, that leads to the killers trying to get rid of Lula and Lula, in response, entering a barbecue contest even though she really can't cook anything, let alone barbecue. The second plot involves breakins at houses and businesses protected by Ranger's security company -- how are they getting the codes to disarm the system?

Evanovich has such a knack for vivid descriptions deftly done with a few sentences, so that you can see everything as though you were watching a movie. It's hard to believe that these characters and settings don't really exist. She's also skilled at funny dialogue and situations. Finally, she creates some great characters -- Morelli and Ranger represent two types of guys women are attracted to: both sexy, but one is on the side of law and order and the other is a bit shady (although less so than in earlier books in this series).

I really needed cheering up when I read this book, and I'm grateful to Evanovich for providing me with some laugh-out-loud moments -- and it's not that easy to get me to laugh out loud.

"Just shoot me now" - Stephanie's Dad in FINGER LICKIN' FIFTEEN

I hear ya, Mr. Plum! I share your pain.

Ok, ok. I understand that author Janet Evanovich and her publisher have a cash cow in the continuing Plum saga. At worst, the series will gain new adherents at the same rate that old ones fall away disillusioned and the revenue stream will continue at a steady flow. But, does the slopping out of a new book any old way in the act of whoring for the consumers' dollars have to be so obvious? At some point, doesn't it become a cheeky affront to the fan base even as the author skips off to the bank to deposit the funds enticed out of the readers' piggy banks?

I used to be a big Stephanie enthusiast when the concept was fresh. But, after the fourteenth installment, I swore I wouldn't buy another - even a second-hand copy for pennies. And I didn't. FINGER LICKIN' FIFTEEN was a cast-off freebie tossed my way that I read in a single sitting in a jury pool assembly room waiting for the clarion call to exalted civic duty. I should have stuck with the tattered and dog-eared ancient copies of the National Geographic and People magazines, which at least had pictures to arrest my glazed-over eyesight.

FINGER LICKIN' FIFTEEN is a repetitive, unimaginative, stagnant rehash of every mental sight gag in the repertoires of Stephanie, Lula and Grandma Mazur. At times, I thought that Evanovich was trying to win a bet over how many of such she could cram between the covers. The continuing Plum-Ranger relationship, which the author presumably includes to supply her concept of sexual tension, has degenerated into complete nonsense; no police board of inquiry would fault Morelli for shooting both with his service revolver. And Lula has become an absurd caricature; she should return to her old day job. Only Rex retains my affection.

Hey, Janet! Has it crossed your mind to think outside the box? Perhaps an expanded role for the poor, otherwise almost invisible, sap - Stephanie's Dad. Or what if Steph was tasked with cross-country transporting a bail jumper to some faraway place, like Bakersfield? Think of the possibilities! Or maybe Plum could actually marry Morelli, who might then expect his new wife to morph into a submissive housewife. Who would kill whom first? How about if the Bad Guys abducted Rex? And oooh, what if Ranger got Stephanie (gasp!) pregnant?

Finally, the two whodunit subplots of FINGER LICKIN' FIFTEEN have the lamest endings that I can recall of any of the Plum novels, the author seemingly having put no effort into making them clever, funny, or intellectually engaging as solutions.

I honestly don't know how to rid myself of this book. Tossing it into the round file would eventually have it taking up valuable landfill space. Perhaps I'll just leave it out in a public area inviting someone to "steal" it.

Celebrity chef, Stanley Chipotle, comes to town for a barbecue cook-off and Lula sees him get his head chopped off. Now, the killers are after Lula. Lula, Stephanie, Grandma Mazur, and Connie sign up for the cook-off thinking it will help them find the killers before they find Lula. In the meantime, someone is robbing RangeMan's accounts and Stephanie is trying to help Ranger find out who since it appears it could be an inside job.

You would think I would be tired of this series since we're at book fifteen now, not counting the between the numbers books. But, I'm not. I thought this was hilarious. How can you not laugh when Grandma Mazur and Lula get together? I will admit the whole Morelli/Ranger thing wears a little thin sometimes, but maybe that's because I can't eat donuts and fried chicken all the time and have two hot guys both pining for me. ;) Anyway, this is definitely not great literature, but if you're looking for a fun read and lots of laughs, this book is the way to go. I'm looking forward to the next installment in my "guilty pleasure" series.

Well, it's wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. While not exactly high praise, it's the best I can do for this 15th installment in the Plum saga.

The plot ( there isn't one, but bear with me) revolves around finding the men responsible for the murder of a celebrity chef and solving the mystery of who has apparently infiltrated Ranger's security business.

Either the characters are tired or I've grown tired of the characters. I liked Ranger when he was just a sexy bounty hunter with a mysterious past, not the Bill Gates of the Trenton Security world. I liked Morelli before the ASPCA got a hold of him and neutered him. And I liked when Stephanie, inept bounty hunter that she is, at least had a little pride. Sleep with Ranger ? If the timing was right. Slash Joyce Barnhardt's tires when she made a move on Joe? Absolutely. Show a little ingenuity when trying to apprehend a skip - you bet. The Jersey Girl with her own unique style is gone, the "new" Stephanie is more like an overgrown puppy who just can't get the knack of housetraining.

So why 3 stars? Because for all its bad points I did think overall the book was OK. If you can abide the coarse and juvenile humor you do get to see Lula in all her spandex lovin' glory and Grandma Mazur, to use her own words, is a pip. I got this book used for about the price of a Latte at Starbucks. And like my overpriced cup of coffee it gave me a few minutes of enjoyment so I figure I got my money's worth.

...you can't catch your breath and you can't see because tears are rolling down your face? And how you have to put the book down because you've got to get control of yourself before you can read on? And how you have to put it right back down again because the next line makes you laugh even harder? Well, that's what happened when I read "Fifteen."

Janet Evanovich is certainly in the pantheon of great comic writers. She creates word pictures that are so vividly funny that I wonder why her series hasn't been made into movies yet. (Probably just as well; Hollywood would probably butcher them!)

"Fifteen" is centered around a barbecue competition and the murder of a TV barbecue chef. So, there is a mystery, but I care about the mystery in Stephanie Plum books about as much as I care about the cases on "House." (which is to say, not too much.) The real treat is the barbecue part of the story, which allows the author to set up some wonderful plot jokes that are paid off to great effect, especially in the last three chapters.

Overall I really liked this book. Following past books Ranger has lost some of his Bad-A$$ness, but is still very hot. There is a funny plot with witty dialogue. My BIG problem was with Morelli letting Joyce into his house. He is now a total wimp and while I was on Team Morelli-this lapse in character style really bothered me. Enough to go from a 4 to a 3 in the rating.

Author Evanovich has said in an interview that Stephanie and crew will never age during the course of this series. Big mistake, because Stephanie never learns, never makes life-enhancing choices, never grows. In this 15th episode, the plot, such as it is, descends into slapstick. Once an author resorts to fat and fart humor to serve as the central mechanism to moving along the story, you know she's running out of ideas. This outing revolves loosely around Lula, who, having witnessed a murder, is in constant danger from the perps. A secondary thread concerns a string of robberies in establishments protected by Rangeman Securities. Not one, but at least four vehicles are bombed to smithereens. And formerly beloved characters are reduced to caricature.

Narrator Lorelei King does her usual professional best, but not even she can save this farce. Here's hoping Ms. Evanovich breaks her own rule and brings about some much needed change in Steph's life.

This book is funny enough, but it relies on the same devices as we have seen in the previous 14 books of the series. Stephanie Plum is the hapless, hopeless bounty hunter in Trenton, NJ. In each novel several of her cars are destroyed, one way or another. Her off and on romances with Ranger and Morelli never quite jell. The hamster goes around in his wheel. Ms Plum's grandmother causes disasters at the funeral home. And the fat ex-'ho assistant to Stephanie gorges herself on donuts, putting a serious strain on her spandex skirt.

Unfortunately the humor doesn't come from anything new, and much of it is crude--anal, if you will. Enough, already. Perhaps the series will contune until suckers like this one quit buying the books--which is now, for me. My recommendation is to put this to rest, create a new central character in a new occupation. And stop telling the same jokes.

I always enjoy reading a new Janet Evanovich book. Her books are funny & fast paced. Her main character, Stepanie Plum, is great. If you have time you can read her books in one setting. I rate this book a 5.

I have decided that listening to Stephanie Plum on Audiobook is my favorite new way to enjoy this series. Between the actress who reads the book and Janet Evanovich story the characters just come to life again and it make you laugh. I would suggest to those fans that have enjoyed this series and have become flat with the books - try it in audio. I borrow the CD from the Library enjoy a few hours on listening and I get my Evanovich fix. This book has the same 2 hunky guys who love/lust after Stephanie and lots of cars being blown up, a murder, a mystery and Stephanie is a walking disaster - nothing changes but somehow she gets me coming back every year to find out if Stephaine will make decision or if anything will change.

A disappointing and unsatisfying read for Ranger Babes. The problem lies in inconsistent characterization of my fav character, Ranger. We see him, at the end of Plum Spooky, rush to Steph's side and embrace her, telling her that he had to see for himself that she survived (not to mention all the sexual tension and tender concern of previous books). Contrast this with the jerk (I'd rather use a stronger word) that JE has given us in #15, with the line item as entertainment, comparison to a cat, and the most jarring of all, that she's his personal property. Others have commented on all of this so I won't dwell on it. But, this is my first post and I just can't seem to let go of the feeling that I've been mislead by this being a "Ranger" book. It seems that the author has just used this surface treatment of a compelling character to aid in plot -- like Ranger couldn't figure out how his security business was in trouble? Please, Ms. E., give us some depth rather than this altogether too fast and lacking effort.

Let's face it, most of us read Stephanie Plum novels for the fun and witty dialogue, as well as the immense appeal of the characters. Plot is definitely secondary. This was such a weak plot, however, that it was hard to even get into it. The ultimate pro Ranger hiring the somewhat inept Stephanie to ferret out serious business security problems at Rangeman just doesn't make sense and was a hard sell from page one. The audio edition suffered because of the narrator Loralei King with her very lackluster, little emotion Stephanie Plum and the aggravating nasally Joe Morelli. If you like audio books and have listened to the prior numbered Plums, you'll recognize that there is something missing. I'll try to think of all the enjoyment other Stephanie Plum books/CDs have given me.

I never miss the chance to read a Stephanie Plum book by Janet Evanovich.

As soon as Finger Lickin' Fifteen came in I began to prepare for the ultimate reading experience. I prepared a cup of hot tea. I made my spot on the sofa comfortable. I took a hot shower and donned my most comfortable pajamas. My husband sat down to watch a movie. I knew he was secretly watching me. He knew that at any moment I would burst out loud laughing. He grinned and said, "A new book by Evanovich?" He knows me well.

In Finger Lickin' Fifteen Lula has witnessed a murder. Two crazy thugs decapitated a well known chef right in front of her. Now they were coming for her with the same meat cleaver. Ranger needs Stephanie's help. Someone has been targeting his security clients. Morelli and Stephanie had a falling out and once again are broke up.

What ensues is hilarious calamity. Lula, Connie, Grandma and Stephanie enter a barbecue contest in hopes of trapping the men with the meat cleaver. It matters not that none of them can cook. When Lula once again destroys Stephanie's apartment, by exploding a pressure cooker full of barbecue sauce, she calls on the assistance of a cross dressing Mr. Clucky. The suspense continues to build just as the laughs do. Picture Lula hanging out the window of a car, shooting at the meat cleaver guys, it isn't a pretty picture. She's wearing neon spandex and is stuck unable to go forward or backward until she releases ...umm you get the idea. Of course the bails bondman we all love to hate, Joyce is back. The scenes between Ranger and Stephanie grow hotter with each book. As usual Stephanie's cars blow up, her apartment explodes and it never gets old.

This is a must read. The last couple of books had lost some of their zing but it is back again in Finger Lickin' Fifteen.

My own personal comments: Why can't Stephanie see that she belongs with Ranger. I heard a rumor that this was the last of the series. I hope that's not true. Grandma had a larger part in this book. I always love this gun toting grandmother. Janet Evanovich does it again!

Well, I have the say the fun has gone out of this series. Even Evanovich's legendary gift with gab is gone. Is her computer now writing the books? I seriously wonder who did the work with this title. Go back and reread some pages from earlier books in the series and you'll see what I mean. And come on, can't the characters grow at least a little as time goes on? This used to be a "laugh out loud" series but I'm not laughing now.

I enjoyed the first ten or so Stephanie Plum books, but how many times can you tell the same one-note joke before it losses its pizzaz? I think it's safe to say that no one ever read these for the "mystery." It was always about the characters, but now they're more caricature than character. Lula, for me, was only ever good for two books before I started skimming scenes with her in them (I found her more annoying than funny.) Gramma Mazer, too, has lost her appeal. There is no growth in any of these characters. The only thing that ever kept me reading was the sizzle in the triangle between Steph, Morelli, and Ranger and even that falls flat here. This is probably my last Evanovich.

I really enjoyed the early Janet Evanovich novels, but this one I felt was pretty bad. Nothing seems to be happening, except someone is out to `get' Lula for witnessing a crime. At first I thought this might be a `lula-centric' book, with Lula the main character for once, but alas, except for farting and running around town trying to elude a killer while also trying to make BBQ, Lula is not the central character.

In fact, it's kind of difficult to care what happens in this one... It's the same old deal.. Steph blows up cars, she and Morelli are on the outs, and Ranger and Morelli stand by to rescue Steph when she needs a hand.

As much as I hate to say it, Evanovich needs to ditch her formula. Morelli needs to hook up with a nice Italian Girl, Ranger needs to find someone worthy of his devotion, and Steph needs to pull herself up by the bootstraps and either embrace bounty-hunterness or move on.

I'm also rather disgusted with the Lula and farting stuff. That's so crass and gross. Lula is a funny character, but you can be funny without being disgusting.

Just where does Janet Evanovich get such great ideas for her Stephanie Plum books? Each is more outrageous than the last. When I read Finger Lickin'Fifteen, I was in awe at the number of scrapes Stephanie gets in and out of, and the other characters, Lula, and Grandma in particular, just get funnier and funnier. I laughed out loud several times over the inevitable car wrecks, and especially the catching of a bail-bond dodger at the well-known Funeral Home. To give too much detail would spoil the fun for others who haven't yet read the book.

I sent this book to my sister in England. Janet Evanovich has a couple of devotees there since I took a batch of Stephanie Plums over there for my sister's enjoyment. They were snapped up by her daughters who also enjoy these books.

I can't wait for the next one to come out.

I was very skeptical about reading book fifteen because I was so disappointed with the last couple of books in the series, but I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised. I suspect it is partly due to the fact that characters I love were more pivotal like Grandma Mazur, and also characters I love to hate were featured. Joyce Barnhart will always be the bane of Steph's existence, and she was back in her all self-appreciating glory. This book focused a great deal on Lula and the beheading she witnesses. She is center stage in this book, and is always good for several laughs. I do have some of the same criticisms that I have had in the past. I wish Steph would step up to the plate and choose already. Pick one - Joe or Ranger, just do it! If she can't choose, maybe it is time for both men to choose another woman. Consistency seems to be a problem in this installment. Joe inherited his home from his Aunt Rose not his Aunt Ruth. I listened to the audio book, so I didn't verify how the book was actually written, but it is distracting for the historical integrity to be off. The plot in this book was on the weak side, and not fully developed. Overall it was an enjoyable read, but JE is capable of doing better.
