Face the Fire (Three Sisters Island Trilogy)

The final book in the New England-set trilogy that began with Dance Upon the Air and Heaven and Earth.
Setting: Three Sisters Island

Sensuality: 7

A stunningly beautiful, powerful witch who possesses the gift of Fire, Mia Devlin locked her heart away when Sam Logan rejected her youthful love and left Three Sisters Island. Eleven years later, Sam returns to the island to claim Mia and take over his family business, the Magick Inn. Passion still burns between them, but Mia refuses to trust the man who once tore her life apart, leaving her grieving and alone. It's imperative that they find a way to resolve their thorny, complicated relationship for time is running out and the deadline for breaking a centuries-old curse is near. Mia has the steadfast aid of her two sisters of the heart, powerful witches that rule Air and Earth, but without Sam's help, even Mia's powers may not be enough to keep her alive until the deadline. And unless Mia makes the right choice about her heart and Sam, evil may win in the final confrontation, destroying all their lives and Three Sisters Island as well.

Face the Fire is the third and last book in bestselling author Nora Roberts's trilogy of witches, magic, and an age-old curse that began with Dance upon the Air and Heaven and Earth. This novel boasts a vivid seaside setting, sympathetic characters, and enough details about the practice of magic to intrigue the most cynical of readers. This is Roberts at her best. Don't miss it. --Lois Faye Dyer

In the conclusion to her acclaimed Three Sisters Island trilogy, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Nora Roberts masterfully evokes the quaint charm of New England, weaving a spellbinding tale of true love-and sheer magic. Mia Devlin knows what it's like to love with your whole heart-and then watch your love walk away. Years ago, she and Sam Logan shared an incredible bond built on passion, legend, and fate. But then one day he fled Three Sisters Island, leaving her lost in memories of the magic they shared-and determined to live without love.. The new owner of the island's only hotel, Sam has returned to Three Sisters with hopes of winning back Mia's affections. He is puzzled when she greets him with icy indifference-for the chemistry between them is still sizzling and true. Angry, hurt and deeply confused, Mia refuses to admit that a passion for Sam still burns up her heart. But she'll need his help-and his powers-to face her greatest, most terrifying challenge. And as the deadline for breaking a centuries-old curse draws near, they must take the first steps toward destiny-and come together to turn back the dark..

Its been a long time since I've enjoyed a trilogy as much as I have the Three Sister's Island books. The third book finished out the story of these wonderfully different women and their special talents. It was so much fun to read all three that I hated to see it end. I could read this trilogy again. Something I don't do often. If your going to read one, plan on reading all three. You won't want to have just one.

Mia Devlin is a strong beautiful witch that owns a bookstore/café on Three Sisters. She keeps buried a deep hurt from her childhood when the love of her life, Sam Logan, left her broken just out of high school.

Sam is back, and he is determined to win Mia back. He knows what a mistake he made leaving. He was so young, and the powerful emotions she brought out in him scared him, so he ran. Sam is also a witch, and he is willing to use whatever it takes to gain Mia's trust.

Mia and Sam must find their way back to each other, or they will not have the strength for the upcoming fight of their lives.

A great finish to the series. I liked that Mia was fire and Sam was water - fire & ice!

What is wrong with Nora Roberts? Her latest books about witchcraft and devils?? This is so not her. I long for a good book like her "THe Villa" or some of her past books with some depth and character development. I could not finish them and took them back to the dealer. Ick!

I think Nora Roberts has a habit of starting trilogies off really well, and then dropping the ball by the time she finishes. "Face the Fire" is nowhere near as interesting or compelling as the previous two installments in this trilogy. I think NR ran out of steam.

I loved this book. It isn't as good as Heaven and Earth, but it is still one of my favorites. The 4 elements are finally together again as Sam (water) heads back to Three Sisters' Island. When Mia senses that he is back, she is pissed, but she doesn't want Sam or anyone else to know that he could still effect her that much. All Sam wants to do is get Mia back. He knows that he made a mistake in leaving, but he is convinced that everything that had happened was meant to happen. Eventually, Mia lets Sam back into her bed, but she tries fruitlessly not to let him into her heart.

I think this is the first Nora Roberts book that I put down and didn't finish. I just could not get into this one and was disappointed. I liked the first book and was okay with the 2nd but this I just couldn't care about. First, I did like Mia but Hated that she was constantly flirting with Riley's boyfriend/husband and that he reacted to her made me a little uneasy as well. Anyway, Sam was just a disappointment....okay he leaves her FLAT without explaination, even after sleeping with her and writing that saying on the wall in the cave, then he has the nerve to come back 10 years later and wonder about her coldness. He thinks she is just going to blow up at him and he would soothe her. I wouldn't have even given him that after breaking her heart so completly. Just couldn't get past that and the book was a bit boring. This series just went flat and I am a huge Nora Roberts fan.

Oh well, this one just wasn't for me.

As usual, Nora Roberts delivers another excellent series. This series was one of the first Nora Roberts books I discovered.

Since then, and yeah, I'm a guy, and I lift weights, and I'm a straight macho guy, ad nauseum, but I love Nora Robert's writings, I have read thirty five of her books in the last three months.

The ladies at my favorite restaurant enjoy talking to me about Nora Roberts. I have a couple of them reading Nora Roberts and one lady and I are exchanging different copies of her books.

Enjoy this series. It is one of her best. It has the best blend of magic, romance, good plot twists, and strong characterization. Her series creates a desire in you to pick up the atlas and start hunting down the island and it's inhabitants.

And guys...with Nora Roberts you just might gather a little insight into the minds of these amazing female creatures. One hint...bring lots of chocolate and never forget what outfit and scent she wore the first time you met her.

Nora...I'm about to figure you out!

I heard the audio book version of this book. I don't know that I would have enjoyed reading it, but I certainly enjoyed listening to it. The book starts painting a picture of the island and four of its strong women .. the 'sisters' and the older, aunt like employee. Two of the sisters have husbands that I really liked. They weren't important to the story but the author did a great job of not making the mistake of so many, ignoring the need to develop the characters of more then just the two main people. The supporting cast helps to explain the story, where the sisters are coming from and also makes you really want Mia to find love with the man who broke her heart. As her broken heart mends, the sisters along with the man that broke Mia's heart, fend of a curse that is finally broken at the same time her heart is mended .. in a very intelligent way that doesn't seem completely hokey and makes sense. It's as if the author decided what would be the culminating point then painstakingly worked here way down from that night on the hill where everything came to a head. Well done!

The third of 3 books deals with Mia Devlin, super sexy (yet strangely virginal) witch extraordinaire and her long lost love Sam. He left ten years ago ostensibly because he was afraid of all the tales that they were fated to be together, so he wanted to screw about 50% of New York before coming back to her.

Mia is understandably cold to him but quickly loses all the spunk she's build up in the last two books and succumbs to this man who is little more than a dark and moody slut. She crumbles like a very dumb and weak woman, the kind you saw in romance novels of the 1970's and 1980's, and from the way Roberts wrote the dialogue I expected some bodice ripping any time, which never came.

Nora Roberts couldn't even think of a new enemy so she brings us the insane imprisoned ex-husband of the heroine from book one (Dance Upon the Air), and now he has magical powers that tap into the dark side of the island!

Sadly, the side tale of the Three Sisters of centuries ago that the island is named for is more interesting than this love story. At least the old legend is emotionally taut and satisfyingly wrapped up.

Sam is a cardboard hero; tall, dark, arrogant and pushy with little human emotions in him. Mia was a fiery sexy heroine, but she is reduced to virginal and nave status, except when she is flirting with the hero of book two (Heaven and Earth) who is married to her best friend. That really creeped me out.

Still, if the first two hooked you, you'll want to read this story. If you haven't started the "Three Sisters" novels, try her "Tears of the Moon" "Jewels of the Sun" etc. stories for a much better plot about 3 people bound to fall in love with new lovers and old friends to break an ancient curse.

I had high hopes for this final installment of the trilogy. Mia was my favorite character from the first 2 books and I was really looking forward to reading her story, and the exciting conclusion to the series. Not only did Mia get short-changed in the character development aspect in this book, but the big finish I was expecting fizzled to an unimpressive whiz-pop.

Admitedly, part of the reason why I didn't like this book is that I don't like Nora's brooding characters as much as I like her tom-boys and sweet girls. They're hard to write and even harder to write sympathetically. I absolutely adored Nell and Ripley, but Mia left me cold. In the same way, I fell in love with Zack and Mac, but I couldn't have cared less about Sam.

The scenery was delicious, as always, and the book wasn't a total loss. It's just that Nora is the IT girl, and it was disappointing to read a less than stellar book of hers.

The fact that I've read everything she's ever written probably doesn't help, but I find lately that after an engaging first book the second and third books in recent Nora trilogies always give me a sense of dýjý vue. The notable exception being the Key trilogy.

Otherwise it's a vintage Nora with a predictable romantic plot. I found myself getting slightly annoyed with the characters. Mostly because I had a feeling I had met them before and this was just another re-incarnation.

It seemed to me that all the women's trials were to either reclaim or remember something important in themselves: Nell had to regain her courage and thus her strength, Ripley had to remember her mercy and find true justice, and Mia had to relearn how to trust and how to forgive and thus to gain a deeper, better love than she had originally owned.
Another of the interesting things was how the love stories of the three modern "sisters" echoed those of the ones from 300 years ago. Naturally Sam had to leave; after all, so had his counterpart in the past and the past needed to be balanced for everything to straighten out properly.
And it was fitting that, finally, there was someone to take the place of the last element. There are traditionally four and it really struck me as wrong in "Air" when there were only three.
Bravo, Ms. Roberts!

I read the first two installments of the Three Sisters Island trilogy and anxiously awaited the release of Face the Fire. In fact, I set my computer calendar to pop up a reminder at 7:30 AM the morning this book went on sale. (Ok, so I'm a biblio-aholic, I admit it - I also have other author's new releases set for reminders, e.g. Jeffrey Deaver, Iris Johansen, as well as Nora Roberts). It's a great way to get the books hot off the press! So, the reminder comes on, I call a friend who just happens to be going to Sam's Club, and beg him to pick up a copy and drop it off at work for me so I could begin reading during my lunch break. (I already admitted that I'm addicted to books!). And then I restlessly waited for the clock to strike noon... Boy was I ever disappointed!

Face the Fire focuses on the third witch in the series, Mia Devlin - the knockout redhead with a strong sense of self who has honed her witchcraft to a level others only dream about. We've been given glimpses of Mia in the other two books and heard about the love of her life, Sam Logan. It seems that Sam had run away from Three Sisters Island and Mia when he was just out of high school. Now he's returned over a decade later to try to win her love back and take over the Magick Inn, previously owned by his family. But we weren't told in the other books that Sam too is a witch. That was an interesting twist of events.

Typical plot for a love story, but then you throw in the island curse to change it a bit. Mia (her power is Fire) must make the right choice about her heart and Sam or evil will prevail and the island will sink into the sea. In Dance upon the Air Nell (her power is the Air) made the right choice with Zack and overcame the evil set against her. In Heaven and Earth Ripley (her power is Earth) curbed her anger and chose Mac and life. So everyone already knows that Mia will make the right choice in this one, because it's predictable, as it's supposed to be in a romance book. At least with the first two the reader was enthralled and kept entertained until the very end with emotional drama that has made Nora Roberts famous.

If I had to use one word to describe this book is would be "lacking". It lacks the character development Roberts' fans expect. It does have decent development, but we don't get inside Sam and Mia's heads and truly understand their personalities. It lacks excitement. Come on, the evil always coming in the form of a wolf to Mia. Also there are bits and pieces that are superfluous to the story. The visiting author going to the island for a book signing just didn't fit. Was Roberts making a plea to some small island bookstore to invite her to do a book-signing event? It makes me wonder because there was absolutely no purpose otherwise for this subplot.

There were a few moments when there was hope for something spectacular - like when the garden gnome came to life (reminiscent of Stephen King's Shining). But those moments went by without being developed into something fantastic.

I truly enjoyed the first two books in the series, and give this one an "average" rating. It would be interesting if Nora Roberts writes an epilogue to this series someday or another trilogy featuring the children of these couples. She's got the makings of great plot lines: magic, charismatic characters, fantastic scenery, and untapped energy. She just needs to develop them and capture the reader, like we've grown to insist upon from her.

much higher! I couldn't believe how Roberts dropped the ball on the last book. Mia in the previous books was shown to be strong, confident and fearless, but this book tore all that apart, and left me with a feeling of what happened? In many parts Roberts didn't write directly what Mia was thinking, or doing, which led to a disjointed feeling within the book. And the part about Sam coming back as the 4th element? That was so out of left field. I don't know what went wrong, as the other two were so strong. Ripley and Nell were both strong in this book as any other, and Ripley grew tremendously within the book from the previous ones. Buy this to finish up 3 sisters, but don't expect it to be your favorite book of all time.

Although all of Nora Roberts books could stand alone, you wouldn't be hurt by having to read the others in her trilogies. I couldn't wait to get to the the third book in the Three Sisters Island trilogy. This one is Mia's story. All through the first two novels I caught myself wondering most about the most mysterious character, Mia. Ms. Roberts saved the best for last. Mia is faced with a tough dicision. After years she still nurses a broken heart and now has to face the one who broke it. Not only that, but events transpire that could end her world as she knows it.

Ms. Roberts has outdone herself with all three books in this series. I enjoyed all three, and I finally got the questions answered regarding Mia I had been waiting for. As all others in this series I couldn't put this book down. This is a book I could easily read again.

Ok folks Nora got me hooked with the first book in the trilogy. Excellent read {5 stars}... The second one was not a good as the first but still very good {4 1/2 stars}. I was so excited about the third novel that I went and got it the first day it came out. I just could not wait to see how it all ended... What the heck happened to the third novel??? Very anti-climatic and almost boring compaired to the first two books... I was very disappointed with the ending of this trilogy.

(Hide Review...)  "Face The Fire" Is A Wash-Out!
Reviewer Permalink
"Face The Fire" is the final book in Nora Roberts' Three Sisters Trilogy, and unfortunately provides a whimper of a finale instead of the expected bang. Her first book, "Dance Upon The Air" is excellent. The second, "Heaven And Earth" is slightly weaker, but well worth reading. This novel, which should have been her strongest, as Mia, her protagonist is the most powerful and interesting of the sister witches, falls into cliche and repetition. It is just plain boring and a big disappointment.

Three Sisters is a small, rocky island off the coast of Massachusetts. Legend has it that the island was once a part of the mainland. Back in the late 1600s, during the Salem witch trials, three sisters, good witches all, known as Fire, Earth and Air, conjured the island and made it a haven against persecution. Unfortunately, the sisters did not fare as well as their island. All three were doomed by unfortunate relationships and a misuse of power. Before the last sister died she cast a spell to keep the island safe for 300 years. At that time she prophesied a reunion of three sisters, descendants of the original three, who would join together to redeem their ancestors, right the wrongs of the past and save their home from destruction.

Mia Devlin, owner of the successful bookstore-cafe on Three Sisters Island, is a strong sorceress, of the white witch variety. She lost the love of her life, Sam Logan, when he left her without warning or explanation ten years before. Mia has closed herself off from intimacy to avoid the fate that destroyed her ancestress 300 years earlier. Sam returns to the island looking to renew his relationship with Mia and runs into a brick wall. Although the chemistry between the two sizzles, Mia is determined not to let Sam back into her heart. As with her sister witches, Nell and Ripley, Mia must face the dangers of the curse that holds the island hostage. It is up to her to meet and challenge the evil that threatens to destroy her home and loved ones, and to triumph over it if she is to save them all.

Unfortunately, Ms. Roberts brings back the same old, now exhausted threads & villains of books one and two, which do nothing to spruce up book three. What a disappointment! Mia and Sam have the potential to be her most interesting characters, but their story gives new meaning to the word "hackneyed." I read the novel to see how everything ends up, having an interest in the characters from books one & two. I should have read an Amazon customer review instead and saved myself the time and money. My advice is to save yours.

The third in a trilogy, Face the Fire was disappointingly slow and uninteresting. I would read it to complete the trilogy, but I do not recommend it as one of Roberts' great pieces.

I'd like to live in the world they live in, see the things that they see and be the best of friends with these dynamic women and their amazing men. Nora is one of the best, and this book is simply a continuation of her fantastic ability to weave a tale that stays in your heart.

(Hide Review...)  A great conclusion to this great triology
Reviewer Permalink
This is the third book in the 3 sisters island triology and tells the story of white witch Mia. She is a powerful witch and owner of a bookstore, who has had her heart broken by Sam Logan many years ago. Sam left the island but he is now back to win Mia back. Mia has closed herself off to love since Sam's leaving and he must convince her to love again. Admist this is the supernatural story of 3 witches (mia, ripley and nell) who are fighting a demon in human form.

This story is not your typical love story- there is no doubt of Sam's love for Mia or of her love for him. Rather, it is the struggle of Sam to get Mia to accept his love and trust in him and in them as a couple. Also nicely woven in, is the subplot of the 3 witches and their power and fight.

I definately recommend reading the other 2 novels preceding this-it helps get the full background and inter relationships. This is a great book- nora roberts writes with passion, character depth and intricacy. A sure winner!

Nora Roberts is a witch of words. Her magickal fiction selections are simply the best. If you like a little magic, or paranormal mixed in with a lot of love and laughter, the three sister's trillogy is the set for you. All three books are a must read but there was something compelling about Mia that I couldn't wait for her story to be told. I was not disapointed. Sugcessful business woman, wiccan by birth, and by choice Mia can not find a man to replace the young man who moved away and broke her heart. It is years latter now and Sam is back, can Mia trust again ? Can they work together to save their home ? Can they find what they had before ? You will laugh and you will be delighted, you will curse and you will cry. This series is a well done as the "Donavon Legacy". Way to GO MRS Roberts !!

Paranormal romance, and especially witches are my favorite kinds of romances. I guess I watch too much Charmed. This novel is the second in a series about three witches descended from three sisters who escaped the Salem Witch Trials by creating there own island.

Mia was never my favorite of the three women. She was too perfect. In this book, however, she comes off as a real B**ch. I really didn't like her.

Sam was just so typical romance novel hero that he was a little boring. Rich, good looking. The only thing new about him was being a witch.

The magic and spells in this book were over the top. They cast a spell for everything in this novel. I mean, a spell to do your makeup? Is that really necessary?

The end of this book just sort of fizzled the whole series, which I loved. I mean, all Mia had to do was love Sam. So what? Nell had to overcome her fear of her abusive husband, Ripley had to deal with her temper and need for vengeance. Mia just had to admit that she loved a man she had always loved. Seemed a little simple to me.

I do love these books though. Great fun to read.

Mia Devlin is a strong woman, strong in personality, powerful in what makes her the most powerful of the three sisters, but her weakness has just come back to Three Sister's Island after many a year away. Sam Logan had crushed Mia's heart when he left, she had never wanted another man, but he wasn't ready to settle down. So Mia built her business walked her cliffs and prepared for the fight to protect the Island. But having Sam come back has thrown her off balance, as all the old feelings come back, and Sam makes plans to settle down on the island for good. Mia can see her hearts desire, yet the shadows cling around her little island as never before. Its been waiting for 300 years for the wards of protection to fade around that little island of light and It's darkness will never be happy till it has destroyed what it could never have. This is Mia's test, and in the balance is the her love come back to her, her sisters and their familys, and all 3000 souls on the island, many of whom to which she is bound by the blood of family to.

Ms Roberts has done it again!

The story: A stunningly beautiful, powerful witch who possesses the gift of Fire, Mia Devlin locked her heart away when Sam Logan rejected her youthful love and left Three Sisters Island.

This was a fabulous ending to this series. Finally the sisters have the added power they need to defeat the evil that has come to the island : Sam Logan. He and Mia scorch the page with their love / hate relationship. Mia knows she has to decide her fate, and that the lives of everyone on the island hangs in the balance. With the love and advice of everyone from this series (Zach, Nell, Riley, Mac and Lulu) she makes her decision and never looks back.
I hated for this book to end. It meant losing the friends that I have made on Three Sisters Island. But, alas, all good things must come to an end. Once again, the dramatic conclusion happens on the last few pages and feels to brief to justify the long story. But, that is Nora Roberts' style and although the end is quick, it still works. I strongly recommend this series. It was wonderful!!!

This was a great book, my favorite out of the Trilogy but you should read all three in order to get the full effect of the characters and the story line. These books are really good! I would suggest you to read these books if you have never read any Nora Roberts books before these books might get you hooked!

I gave up reading Romance because they did have what I was looking for until I picked up my first Nora Roberts book, Blue Bayou, after that I was hooked. I bought this book because I am very intrigued by the wiccan culture and this book did not disapoint. I see these three women Mia, Ripley and Nell like a more grown-up version of the Charmed series. This book is about my favorite character Mia she is so strong in her powers, and a new character Sam Logan, her former lover who came back after eleven years. Of course, all my favorites are in the story to. I would like Nora to do a series sequel on the daughters of these three wonderful and lovely women and very sexy and gorgeous men that they married.

Nora Roberts not so good books are better than many of other authors best books.

Sam and Mia are on the same island again. They are learning to work through old pains and hurts and to love each other again. The passion is intense. The story is nice. It is a nice ending to a lovely series.

I rated this four stars rather than the usual five. I found this book to be much anticipated and it did not live up to the promises hinted at in the other books of this series. Further, I got tired of hearing about how Nell was a good cook. To top that all of, once I learned the story of how Mia was hurt and why Sam had left, I was dissapointed with the poor reasoning.

Despite the above problems I had with the book, the series is wonderful and the story is nice. The book is rich in passion and history and love. It is well worth reading, particularly if you have read the others in the series.

Enjoy.

conclusion(?) to an enjoyable trilogy. I have not read many of Ms. Roberts books but several people at work recommended the first book and I was hooked. I too hope there is a continuation maybe exploring Lulu. I loved the interaction between the couples, but I especially liked Mac. Hoping to see more on these characters.

This series was one of those, "I hate that it is over!" series for me. I do agree with some of the other readers who have said that this wasn't as fiery as the other two in the Three Sisters trilogy, but I still enoyed it. I just love it when "old friends" you've made in other books come back to "visit" again. This is one of those great series for a lazy afternoon, but do read them in order!!!

(Hide Review...)  This book has the Nora Roberts old style
Reviewer Permalink
I've been a fan of Nora Roberts for a long time. As I've stated before, the first romance books that she wrote many years ago, I thought were beautiful and well-written. A writer develops a certain type style of their very own. Roberts has done just that. Unfortunately, some of the latest books that have been published with this author's name on them, just didn't hold water that she even wrote those books. They lacked her "certain" style, which is a wonderful mark when she writes. HOWEVER, this book had Nora's style-stamp and I loved it. I doubt that Nora has taken a crash course in Wicca101 to write so well about the Craft, so she either did some thoroughly extensive research, or she had the help of some sisters. No matter, I love a wonderful romance story and this trilogy didn't let me down. At least I haven't lost faith that Nora does still pen a few of her own books. As for Nora writing about magic, well think about it. Isn't romance started between two people by a spark? Sure it is. Obviously, if everyone wanted to read the same thing, a lot of writers would be in serious trouble. So you'll have conflicting opinions about any book. I've given Nora a few less stars on some of her more recent books, but believe me, this is Nora Roberts writing at her best. I really did enjoy this book. I would recommend it to anyone that loves to read romance. The love between Sam and Mia never died, the flame was just lowered. I thought Sam Logan was a great character. And I also thought the final story of this trilogy was HER BEST. That's the romantic in me.
