It was just what I was looking for, and just as I expected. He assumes you know NOTHING and goes from there. Another good book in the Dummies series.

I am an accountant. I was extremely disappointed in this book. Not well structured at all. It doesnt seem to know if it wants to be a reference book, a book for beginners or a book for those that have Excel knowledge and want to figure out the different features.
In the end the book is a help to no one.

I was disappointed. Although it is good for very basic beginners, I was hoping it would help with functions that are more difficult. The Dummies Books are so good at explaining things in friendly terms. I was looking for the friendly terms to help me understand complicated functions. I was out of luck. I would only recomment this product for the very basic beginner.

Helps when you get stuck, but I actually learned more on using Excel from MS site. The book is easy to read and would be great for a beginner.

My son-in-law owns two gas stations and all of his records are on Excel spread sheets. I wanted to help him so I needed to learn how to operate the Excel sheets. He is running the older computers which have the 2003 version on them. I had to get a book about the 2003 version. I did buy this book and I read it from cover to cover. I was surprised at how much Excel could do. Once you learn the basics of Excel you can perform most of the functions in simple steps. You can do almost anything on a spread sheet. I kept going back to the book to look up procedures as I got into more complicated procedures. The book has a good table of contents. I even look up some of the words so I could better understand what the program required me to do to get the right results. Later I looked at the Microsoft manual for Excel. The manual has the same information but it seems more technical and it has a minimal table of contents. The Dummies book was more user friendly and it was easier to use as a reference to answer a simple question.

(Hide Review...)  I can't find anything on pivot tables
Reviewer Permalink
I already knew almost everything in this book, so I was disappointed when it arrived and I started looking through it. I ordered it hoping it would give me a simple explanation "for dummies" on what pivot tables are and how to create/work with them. They're not even listed in the index!

This book is great at covering all the very basic how-tos for someone who's never worked with Excel before; but it doesn't delve deeply enough into what the program can really do.

Generaly a weak book unless you have never used Excel. I got the book because I needed help with graphical display of data.
If that was your problem this book will not help you much.

Reviewer Permalink
Basically all the "...for Dummies" books are easy to understand and they guide you step by step on how to do just anything like teaching a three year old how to write "A". I also bought "Word for Dummies" and I can only say the same. It helped me quite a bit since I really don't know anything about computers. I've studied them back when we used "Cobol".

(Hide Review...)  Just a Manual
Reviewer Permalink
This is just a version of the manual without any sample exercises or anything. If that's all you need, its fine. I needed a tutorial with exercises, sample data to play with, etc. I found just what I was looking for in "Excel Personal Trainer 2003" which includes a cd with a lot of sample sheets and step-by-step exercises. In that book, the tutorial loads by itself but you have to manually copy over the sample spreadsheets.

BTW, I am actually using Quattro Pro 10 from Corel/Wordperfect but most things are the same or close enough to figure out.
