Everyday Italian: 125 Simple and Delicious Recipes

In her hit Food Network show Everyday Italian, Giada De Laurentiis shows you how to cook delicious, beautiful food in a flash. And here, in her long-awaited first book, she does the same—helps you put a fabulous dinner on the table tonight, for friends or just for the kids, with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of flavor. She makes it all look easy, because it is.

Everyday Italian is true to its title: the fresh, simple recipes are incredibly quick and accessible, and also utterly mouth-watering—perfect for everyday cooking. And the book is focused on the real-life considerations of what you actually have in your refrigerator and pantry (no mail-order ingredients here) and what you’re in the mood for—whether a simply sauced pasta or a hearty family-friendly roast, these great recipes cover every contingency. So, for example, you’ll find dishes that you can make solely from pantry ingredients, or those that transform lowly leftovers into exquisite entrées (including brilliant ideas for leftover pasta), and those that satisfy your yearning to have something sweet baking in the oven. There are 7 ways to make red sauce more interesting, 6 different preparations of the classic cutlet, 5 perfect pestos, 4 creative uses for prosciutto, 3 variations on basic polenta, 2 great steaks, and 1 sublime chocolate tiramisù—plus 100 other recipes that turn everyday ingredients into speedy but special dinners.

What’s more, Everyday Italian is organized according to what type of food you want tonight—whether a soul-warming stew for Sunday supper, a quick sauté for a weeknight, or a baked pasta for potluck. These categories will help you figure out what to cook in an instant, with such choices as fresh-from-the-pantry appetizers, sauceless pastas, everyday roasts, and stuffed vegetables—whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll be able to find a simple, delicious recipe for it here. That’s the beauty of Italian home cooking, and that’s what Giada De Laurentiis offers here—the essential recipes to make a great Italian dinner. Tonight.

I got this book as a present for a birthday. Needless to say, I didn't care for this book at all. Sure it gives you A LOT of pasta dishes but in all honesty, if someone were to eat Pasta Dishes Every Day of their life then they would be Overweight beyond belief! I've tried at least ten of the recipes and while they may do something for other reviewers, they sure didn't for me. I don't even watch her on tv anyone. She just has this thing where she holds herself higher than everyone else. I honestly don't care about her background culture and how it influences all of her cooking. I don't buy a cook book for the culture, I buy a cookbook because I Know I will enjoy the recipes and make them over and over again, rather than one time.

I confess that my husband and I have something of a cookbook fetish. We have, however, invested in some books that didn't prove worthwhile and so before shelling out the money for Giada's books, I decided I would check them out from the library, make some recipes, and go from there. I wanted to know if the recipes were as good as she makes them look on the show and if, upon tasting it, my husband and I would have expressions on our faces that mirror the food ecstasy Giada seems to experience. The answer to that question: Oh, yes! Today I've ordered all three of her books because I simply can't imagine living without them and not being able to make her delicious, heavenly recipes whenever I want. Here are my thoughts on a few of the recipes:

Vodka Sauce - This was perhaps the only Giada recipe I made with which I wasn't entirely thrilled. It was a little too heavy on the vodka for my taste and I would likely use less the next time I make it. It does have a nice, creamy texture and the vodka does cut through the cream but I thought the flavor of the vodka overwhelmed the other flavors. The next time I make this, I will try it with half the amount of vodka specified in the recipe.

Salmon Baked in Foil - I really liked fish "in a bag" as it makes for very easy cooking and very moist fish with a nice helping of vegetables. I enjoyed this Italian take on the dish and the end result was very tender and tasty salmon with a lovely herbed tomato sauce. I'm not entirely a fish enthusiast so it's saying something when a fish dish gets high marks from me.

Reviewer Permalink
I love to watch Giada's show and am a fan, but this cookbook is a big disappointment. The recipes are simple which is great, but they are unfortunately bland. Very bland. I'd have to say that her fettucini alfredo recipe is so flavorless you'd be better off just buying sauce from a jar.

I've given this cookbook several tries and have yet to prepare a meal from it that was better than 'meh.' There is nothing special here. If you purchase this book plan on having to tweak each recipe to add flavor. If you're okay with that, then you will enjoy the book because it is attractive. If you want a cookbook with flavorful as-written recipes then this won't be the book for you.

Giada's recipes are great. What makes them great is that they are easy and yet very elegant. Also, the ingredients are easy to come by and not so expensive and rare that you end up shelving the book. I really enjoy putting together her recipes and so far - my boyfriend has been going back for seconds each time.

I'm new to cooking and I work full time so another thing I enjoy about her recipes is that most of them don't take forever to make. I save the long ones for the weekends.

In the front of her book is a warm introduction and a small list of ingredients that she always keeps on hand. I found that to be very useful. I went to the grocery store and bought the staple items and some of the things I saw while skimming through the recipes. What I love is that I can come home from work and if I haven't been shopping in a while, I can always whip something up with little more than the staple items and the dishes still look beautiful and taste great too!

Giada offers some background to each recipe and I think that's a nice touch. Overall her book is easy to follow, has fantastic recipes and has proven to be the only one I use. Now I just have to getthe other books and I'll be all set!

(Hide Review...)  Excellent chicken piccata, disappointed on the lasagne
Reviewer Permalink
I've had a mixed experience with this cookbook. So far I've made 2 recipes: Classic Italian Lasagne and Chicken Piccata, one turned out well and the other wasn't impressive.

My mom and I decided to stray from our usual lasagne recipe and try the one in this book. As we started making the sauces from scratch and preparing the fillings we realized that the recipe was a bit more work than we anticipated. I had expected "Everyday Italian" to refer to meals that could be prepared on a weeknight with a reasonable amount of work, but this was more effort than I would do on a "regular night". Once we made it, I wasn't all that impressed with the flavor, either. Since it calls for bechamel sauce (which we had to make from scratch, by the way), it was too rich for me. I think everyone has their own idea of what lasagne should taste like and maybe this just wasn't mine. I probably won't be making that one again.

Giada did redeem herself with the Chicken Piccata recipe, though. It was easy enough to prepare that I was surprised at how delicious it turned out! Very elegant and yet very simple. It is definitely a candidate for serving to guests.

One thing that did bother me a bit was the recipe for prosciutto-wrapped breadsticks - it calls for refrigerated breadstick dough (like Pillsbury!) Somehow I just didn't think that fit into a cookbook that has recipes for a zillion "made-from-scratch" pasta sauces.

Overall, I'll be keeping this cookbook for the chicken piccata recipe and I may try some of the other similar recipes. I'm not expecting to love every recipe in the book, though.

(Hide Review...)  One of Giada's cookbooks--a few brief comments.
Reviewer Permalink
If you want to expand your cookbook library and must add one of Giada's cookbooks to your shelf, then (in my opinion) you may want to look into Giada's other cookbook called "Giada's Family Dinners". The reason I say this is because I think that the recipes in Giada's other book (FAMILY DINNERS) has tastier recipes.

In this cookbook, instead, Giada tries to add to her basic repertoire, but most of the recipes included (in this book in review) seem boring to me. Either that, or even bizarre,--- such as her cranberry raviolis (which sound pretty awful).

As previous commentators stated, I got tired of looking at more and more photos of Giada, and less and less photos of the recipes' steps. I would have preferred if Giada had included photos of "how to" steps, or even photos of the recipes' layout , such as the step-by-step photos shown in THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FOOD, (by another author, not Giada).

I love Giada so I really liked this book. It had lots of pictures- which I love plus the recipes were real easy to follow and it speaks to you in a way that she would from her show. I have tried the chicken parmisean recipe which came our really tasty and also the fetticini which was better refried the next day. I bought some ingredients to make some of the desserts and can't wait to try them. I think her Family Dinners book is better but this book was great to have as well.

If we can get 1 or 2 good recipes from a book, then we're satisfied, but every one of Giada's recipes that we have tried, turns out fabulous! Every One!

This book has lots of delicious, easy to follow recipes, more so than any other cook book I've seen (and we have quite a collection).

The recipes found in books by most famous chefs, often contain exotic ingredients that (at least in my region) are hard to find or down-right impossible to obtain, rendering the book pretty much useless. Not so with this book, the recipes have simple ingredients with delightful flavor combinations, suitable for everyday, and good enough to WOW guests at a dinner party, your guests will think you slaved over a hot stove all day.

Seriously, this is an excellent book for both the novice and experienced cook, and after trying many of the recipes from it I've purchased additional copies to give as gifts.

Within a week of buying this book, I had made four recipes from it. All turned out delicious, all were easy to make, and I had almost all the ingredients already (I did have to go out to get a lot of fresh basil). I have made a few more since then, repeated some, and have never been disappointed. It is a good book to look through when you are stuck for ideas to make for dinner, need a quick side dish, or want to try something new.

That said, I have two complaints:

First, the book does not stay open by itself on the counter, a feature I consider imperative in any cookbook.

Second, on many pages, the print is green on white, or white on teal, or some other low-contrast combination, making it both harder to read and impossible to photocopy. In order to keep my cookbooks clean and my favorite recipes handy, I photocopy the ones I like and put them in a binder with plastic page protectors. With this book, I have to type them in.

I have loved Giada's show on Food Network for a long time, and had been downloading her receipes from Food Network constantly. Her book, "Everyday Italian" was long-awaited and did not disappoint. I loved her suaces, especially her bright tasting alfredo sauce. I tend to like heavier sauces, but her arrabiata was also delicious. Notwithstanding the above, I did feel that some of her sauces and dishes were too "simplified." Granted, fresh, simple sauces are fabulous, but some sauces need a little more time, or a less "basic" recipe. Knowing her rich family food history, I anticipated that more intricate and diverse flavors and sauces were in the making, and they were, with her two other books, "Family Dinners" and "Everyday Pasta." The three Giada cookbooks are a staple in my household. My husband loves her recipes, and I love the look on his face when he eats a dish I cooked from her books. He especially loves her baked pasta dishes. Delicious! And, as a side note, I love her three-tied diamond necklace.

I have both of her books and can honestly say that my wife and I have enjoyed every single meal we've made. It is a clear and consise way to explore traditional Italian cuisine that moves away from the Americanized standards of old (pasta + cheese + sauce). As a red blooded American with a strong Italian bond I have memories of old dishes my family enjoyed that rushed back to me with every page I turn. Our dinner parties have become more fun and a hell of a lot easier while still looking like I spent all day in the kitchen. And let's face it...she isn't too hard on the eyes either. Good Eats - Pete from NYC.

I love Giada and her show(s). However, for my own needs this didn't cut it. This book is good for people who perhaps aren't already comfortable with cooking basics, or... who do not already own any recipe books. I much prefer Mario Batali's Molto Italiano for innovative recipes and interesting combinations. While this book is decent, it's a bit bland if you are looking for Italian dinner ideas. In fact I find this almost TOO Americanized. NB: I prefer her other book, Giada's Family Recipes, which kicks things up a notch and uses less 'action shots" as opposed to photos of food.
