Egyptology

Discover the wonders of ancient Egypt through a fascinating journal from a lost expedition — a treasure trove of fact and fantasy featuring a novelty element on every spread.

Who can resist the allure of ancient Egypt — and the thrill of uncovering mysteries that have lain hidden for thousands of years? Not the feisty Miss Emily Sands, who in 1926, four years after the discovery of King Tut's tomb, led an expedition up the Nile in search of the tomb of the god Osiris. Alas, Miss Sands and crew soon vanished into the desert, never to be seen again. But luckily, her keen observations live on in the form of a lovingly kept journal, full of drawings, photographs, booklets, foldout maps, postcards, and many other intriguing samples. Here are just a few of EGYPTOLOGY's special features:

— an extravagantly gilded cover, featuring a raised Horus hawk pendant with three encrusted gems
— a playable game of Senet — ancient Egyptian checkers — including board, pieces, original-style dice, and rules
— a souvenir booklet showing how to read simple hieroglyphs
— a scrap of textured "mummy cloth"
— a facsimile of the gilded mummy mask of King Tut
— a gilded eye-of-Horus amulet with a "jewel" at the end

Rich with information about life in ancient Egypt and peppered with Miss Sands's lively narration, EGYPTOLOGY concludes with a letter from the former Keeper of Antiquities at the British Museum, explaining which parts of this unique tale may be accepted as fact, which are guided by legend, and which reflect the author's delightful sense of fancy.

I was actually disappointed in this Ology book. I have two others and the way the information is presented in them plus the little extras were just better in those. There weren't as many exciting extras in this one as I expected and the "mummy cloth" example was a bit disappointing. I bought this for my daughter and she became bored quickly due to the confusing way the pages were written and presented. I am hoping the next Ology I choose will be more like the first two I have.

I had been looking at this book for about a year and was on the fence about buying it. The main reason was because it was 20-25 dollars everywhere. When I saw it for under 14 on Amazon I knew it was a bargain! It's wrapped up safe under my tree and I know my daughter will love it!

I am a life-long Egyptology buff, and co-author of a novel, Secret of the Sands, that is set in Egypt and I was absolutely thrilled to receive this as a Christmas present one year. It has sat proudly showcased on my main bookshelf ever since. Not only is it a lovely book to look at, the design of its interior is like leafing through the personal notebook of an Egypt-traveller. Its fun design includes all kinds of interesting things to open & unravel. It is a book that children find fascinating, because of all the little hidden items they can discover, plus the book is packed full of great facts about Egypt. This book truly does do justice to Egypt and her magnificent and unrivaled history. My house is decorated throughout with Egyptian art and this book is a wonderful addition to my home. It is a keepsake I will treasure forever...

A great gift for the Egypt-buff in your family!!

What a waste of paper. I was very disappointed when my cohort recently purchased this book. She told me it was a pop up book for little kids, but I could see through the lies and deceit. Unlike my friend Maryanne I can see this book for what it really is....a cheap gimmick to exploit the middle class of America. As if we didn't have enough I-Spy books, pop-up books, and Dora the Explora books. Her kids did enjoy the book however, and even learned a bit of Egyptian culture. The ends do not justify the means. I would much rather have my child look up Egyptian history and culture for a fraction of the cost on the internet. Please save your money and invest it in a more productive manner. Children can learn from pop-up books, but poor quality books like these are not worth the money.

(Hide Review...)  Egyptology is not a fantasy adventure
Reviewer Permalink
This book is very nice to explore (especially for children). However, as a professional, degree-holding Egyptologist myself, I find it insulting to place my work alongside Dragonology and Pirateology. Egyptology exists in the real world, and it is truly fascinating (which is why I have devoted my life to it). Too often, people ignore the realities of the field, preferring its fantastic versions. In my opinion, this hurts the perception of ancient Egypt as a whole.

That being said, this book is well-made and would be fun for children to explore. Buy your children this book to pique their interest in the field, and maybe eventually gear them towards more accurate representations of the Egyptian past.

I love the 'Ology books. This is fun, beautifully done, there is a game included, it is supposed to be the discovery of an old journal of a trip to Egypt and the search for the tomb of Osiris. The back of the book has little tags and things in it, the journal story is an adventure.

On a side note, recently, the tomb of Osirus was discovered underground and I got a photo drawing of how it looked before it got waterlogged, and put that in my book for fun.

This is a great book. My son got it for Christmas and loves it. We originally saw it in a Borders book store(price was alot more than at Amazon)and my son looked at it for almost an hour while we shopped. He just loved all the postcards and drawings and heiroglyphs that are on just about every page. The book is written as a journal from an amatuer Egyptologist who goes on a journey looking for what they believe is the tomb of Osiris. The whole expedition disappears and years later her niece has the journal published. You'll love all the little letters, cards and drawings that are inside and makes the book come to life. The ology series is fantastic. My son also has the Dragonolgy book which he loves as well. He really enjoys these books and is already asking for Piratology and Wizardology. I think this is a great book for kids since they really get into reading the book.

"Egyptology" is a large-size, illustrated book and the second in the "ologies" series. Other books in the series are "Dragonology," "Wizardology," and "Pirateology." The book is very short, at only 32 pages, but the illustrations are good. The book has black and white illustrations as well as full color illustrations and is written as if it is a scrapbook/travel journal from an amateur archaeologist who lived in the 1920's. Each of the sections covers a specific area of ancient Eqypt and the text is mostly made of up facts with some asides from the fictional author.

Over all, this isn't as good as the other "ologies" books and the text is hard to read sometimes as it is made to look as if it were written on a manual typewriter.

This book is full of fun and facts. Our son was given this book as a gift for his birthday. What a wonderful gift it was! We spend about half an hour at a time on a page. There are lots of "secrets" and pockets and even a game. The book pretends to be a mysterious manuscript dating to 1926 (or is it real?) and provides readers young and old with an imaginative tour of Egypt's mysteries. Its heavy pages have the feel of a well-made pop-up book and its storyline is absorbing. My son seems to scan around the pages and find something new every time we open the book. It's fun for him but, I enjoy it just as much. It reminds me of the fun adventure of Indiana Jones.

This book was awesome! I bought Dragonology AFTER I bought this because I didn't know about these two books. When I went to the book store I first found out about these books when I saw Egyptology on one of the bookshelves. But Egyptology was the only one of the two books on the bookshelf. So I bought this book and it was so cool that I went back and saw they had some book called Dragonology and bought that too. I love both of them and I think they both deserve five stars. Both are so convincing; I SO definitely believe in dragons and that the tomb of Osiris exsists. One of the artists whose name is Nick Harris draws the best pictures that I have ever had the priviledge to lay my eyes on. His pictures are so good it's scary. I mean, it looks like it's a photograph of the real thing. Anyway, I just want to say that this book is just as good as Dragonology was, and I hope more books like these are made because they are definitely worth twenty dollars to buy.

Oh, and buy the way, remember those coffee stains that the publishers noted at the end of the book? I SO don't think that Emily Sands or anyone else spilled coffee on her diary. I mean, really, there has to be a reason why this woman and her comrades disappeared without a trace, right? And I think that the reason is right there, splattered all over the last pages of her book.

This is a beautiful book with a stunning cover and many full-color illustrations. Important statistics are provided for travellers. For instance, local temperatures, distances and the road to Giza are shown. Hieroglyphics are set forth together with basic definitions. The Abydos is pictured. This is the most sacred site in all of Egypt. The Valley of the Kings is depicted together with an accompanying description. Pictures and stories of the Statues of the g-ds are shown- mostly for display on important holidays.

The book is a good value for the price charged. It will be useful
for a large constituency of students and teachers in academe.
The presentation will assist tourists travelling to Egypt for
the first time.

This book is another winner from templar and candlewick. They have definitely found a genre legions of fans can enjoy.Unlike Dragonology this book is more story-based and it is supposedly written by emily sands in 1926 and recounts her search for the tombs of osiris. But don't think that they have gotten too far away from dragonology. This book is packed with extras(i believe even more than dragonology). There is a game of Egyptian checkers(Senet),a piece of mummy cloth and much much much much more. But i cant tell you it all or it would ruin the book.Let me tell you this though dragonology is one of the greatest books of all time but egyptology isnt far behind.

I am a 5th grade teacher in Hamtramck MI, and I have to say that this book along with Dragonolgy are with out a doubt the two most highly prized books in my classroom library. Both boys and girls fight over the chance to read them. I actually keep them next to my desk instead of in the library shelves so they don't get taken by a child who simply has to have it.

These books just encourage the kids to have such wild imaginations, something that is being lost in the age of video. I love listening to their conversations as they talk about the fascinating pictures and play with the books realistic extras like letters and attached informational booklets. I like how the authors intretwine tons of informational text with a flowing fictional story line such as a make believe expedition or lessons learned from a dragonmaster. No question about it, these books are definitely 5 stars!

I bought this book for myself and i have to say it is absoutely awesome! I stayed up for 2 hourse reading every detail of this exciting "long-lost" diary. The games Senet is very fun and the "papyrus" looks very real! The cover looks like it is made out of gold and is very cool. I enjoyed this book and reccommend it to everyone.

As a fan of Elizabeth Peter's "Amelia Peabody" series, I was very excited to came across "Egyptology" by Emily Sands and immediately had to have it. It is beautifully illustrated and a great source of information. The book is put together like a scrapbook of Emily Sand's vacation to Egypt. It has drawings and pictures of places as well as little envelopes holding letters and game pieces. It is really charming. Anyone with an interest in Egypt and its antiquities should enjoy this book.
