I've been a Database guy for some 12 year now since graduating. I've worked on numerous large projects involving complex database problems. This book is THE most well read, THE most frequently referenced book in my collection. It's well written and is THE best learning + refresher guide out there.

the book will teach basic Oracle things and clear the misconcepts, myths and mis understanding prevailing amongst numerous Oracle users.
I am still to finish this book fully, but so far I am so enlightened by reading the first 3 topics of the book. I recommend to all who are related to Oracle Database to go through this book, which would be very very helpful in understanding the Oracle Database. Also, it would make Oracle a fun to work with instead of huge and cumbersome tool which is the picture in majority of people's mind. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-31 05:49:52 EST)

This book delivers the clear insight before delving into intricate details on a good selection of topics that are critical to those concerned with deigning and implementating high performance database solutions.
My only wish is that this book covered more ground, especially on newer or perhaps peripheral topics such as RAC, ASM, XMLDB, OCI/OCCI, DataGuard and so on.. but maybe that's asking too much from one book. Classic Tom Kyte. Get it on your bookshelf today if you implement or support Oracle database solutions for a living. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-31 15:19:31 EST)

Tom has done a great job at busting several myths related to performance tuning, SQL, Architechture etc..
I think the entire book can be summarized in 4 words "Dont think just benchmark!" (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-08 20:05:48 EST)

I've been an Oracle developer for 12 years, and this is the best book on Oracle that I've read. No waffle, well laid out and it's packed with information and relevant examples. I found it extremely useful for a complex piece of work I was doing recently - it paid for itself several times over. 5 stars !

This book now lives permanently in my laptop bag (despite how heavy it is). Tom really goes out of his way to show you why you should do things certain ways, and he proves what he's saying through every part of the book with actual test cases. Applying some of the concepts from this book gave my application a 4x's performance boost, so my customers are much happier already. The biggest things you learn are to benchmark everything and not to assume anything about Oracle without testing it. The book really opened my eyes and made me realize as an application developer how much I was guessing about Oracle without actually knowing.

This is very helpful, if you want to learn how to design a performance efficient system. I have suggestion for the readers of this book, that they should read concept guide to get know how to use the SQL tunning tools.

Thank you Mr.Kyte for taking the time to write this book.
I got the book less than 1 hr ago and was able to solve 3 of our most vexing production issues immediately with the information and examples contained in your book Thanks again Bernard (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-03-08 19:56:50 EST)

A must read for anyone who works with the Oracle Database. This book opened up new methods of testing, debugging and tools(jdeveloper) and others. This book not only shows through examples what happens when you do something but also why you should not do something because it wont help. Thanks Tom for this book.Certainly tries in a very good way to take away FUD.

The author is a well known Oracle expert and this book is certainly informative. If you are experienced with Oracle performance tuning, or have read few other Oracle performance books, like I have, then this book doesn't offer much new. The scripts and examples in this book, however, are top notch and well worth emulating.
The publishers of books like this demand that the author write a minimum of XXX pages to justify an exorbitant cost of a book. Unfortunately, most people still believe the price of a book is determined principally by its thickness. Hence, we have books like this which could have been twice as good if it was condensed in less than 300 pages. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 11:08:05 EST)

This is one of the best Oracle books I've ever read. The style is different from any book I've ever read. Most of the Oracle books are feature centric, while this (as the name implies) is more design centric. In addition to design, it is interesting to see his methodology for proving his assertions. So many times in my career, I've been asked questions about design, and I've had a hard time articiluating why it should be done one way and not another. Typically the alternative is so bizzare, I've never even considered why other than "its just not right". His explainations to the "make everything varchar2(4000)" and the "have the application do all the validations" scenarios made me laugh out loud. The ETL developer on one of my projects wanted to take that exact approach. I've also never read a book that went into such detail about the Cost Based Optimizer, which was very interesting.
Can't wait to get my hands on "one-on-one", I hope it's more of the same. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 11:08:05 EST)

I have both of Tom's book and while this one is quite good, the first one the major book called Oracle One on One is pure solid gold for dbas and developers serious about Oracle! I have taken all of the Oracle DBA courses and have several years of DBA experience but still learned a ton of stuff that was missing such as partitioning, application tuning and design and general Oracle knowledge. Tom is a major deity when it comes to Oracle wisdom and his writing style rocks.

If you've ever looked over anything about the Oracle database, you've likely come across the name of this book's author, Tom Kyte. Like his articles, this book is designed to help the reader get the most out of the Oracle database. This is an excellent book for understanding the inner workings of Oracle database engine.
The theme of this book is that by understanding how Oracle works, you can write highly scalable, high performing applications. If you don't know how your database works, you'll always be frustrated and less likely to have a well-performing database. The author is absolutely serious about this point and drives it home by dispelling many myths surrounding Oracle (e.g. partitioning is always better than not partitioning). By discussing these technical details, the reader is equipped with the knowledge to build an application designed to perform. If you're looking for a book to learn how to write effective PL/SQL, then you might be slightly disappointed by this book. While there is a great chapter on the Oracle specifics of writing SQL, this book is designed to architecting the entire database, not just the SQL statements run inside the database. I think this a very effective (and sadly novel) approach to database design. There are all too many books out there which concentrate on writing fast SQL, with little regard for the underlying data design and structure. This is by far the best book I have read on understanding how Oracle works. The author covers everything from design to disaster recovery. If you are responsible for maintaining an Oracle database, I would highly recommend this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 11:08:05 EST)

This book is great. Author is unsurpassed in his ablility to explain how to use Oracle DB. Every time he makes a point he always back it up with clear and easy to follow steps to prove that point. Absolutely a great book.

This book is a must-have if you work with Oracle for a living. In my day job I work with Oracle and MS SQL. This book makes working with Oracle almost as easy as working with MS. It will teach you how to analyse your system for things that indicate problems and resolve them before they kick you in the behind.
