It's important to note that this book is released in different countries as specific country editions. The triangle headed guy on the front cover is holding the flag from of the country each edition is from. Each country has its own laws and taxes, postal system you'll be using for domestic and international sales and so forth. Although most of the info (the general stuff) is the same if you're going to the effort of buying it I'd get one applicable to where you live. Even though Amazon is a global website, it is based in the US so you'll no doubt get the US version ordering it here.

There's heaps of books out there on ebay. Let's be honest none of them are really needed at all as all the info you could even need is on ebay's FAQ, help pages and discussion boards. If however your online internet time is very expensive or you don't have much time or opportunity to access the internet and want to be completely prepared for buying or selling an item on ebay before the expense of going online, then I guess you are going to buy a book to help you. Although if this is the case odds are you're not online and not reading reviews on Amazon about books anyway. But if you are after a book containing the basic information you need to buy or sell eBay for Dummies is one of the better ones out there.

This book is laid out in easy to follow chapters with headings on the various actions you'll be looking to do. It also has a pretty good index to search for particular things that way as well. There's not a great deal of pages devoted to buying, it's more for sellers (probably about 4 fifths of the book) but the basics are covered.

A much better book I have subsequently come across since writing this review is The eBay Myth-Bu$ter: Turn 199 Misconceptions Into Money! by David Busch. It debunks a lot of myths sellers tell buyers (and other sellers on the discussion boards) such as buyers are responsible for lost items (nope sellers are), feedback is important (nope but how you respond to it is), you can't have multiple accounts (yes you can, in fact you're stupid not to), buyers or sellers must respond within 3 days of auction ending (no they don't have to). It's a much better book to learn stuff than this Dummies or any other e-bay book I've come across.

Warning about ebay!!! I try to avoid credit cards so I can prevent massive debt, so I tried using ebay and paying everything with personal checks. The sellers grew very impatient or didn't report having received my payment and soon I had too many nonpayment strikes and my account was blocked within a month or two. To fix it, I had to mail my proof of payments into ebay, but that is way too much hassle and no guarantee that it wouldn't happen again next time! I wouldn't trust a company that can't tell the difference between a fake J.K. Rowling autograph and a real one!

The book does exactly what I expected it to do. Had I reviewed the tutorial already on eBay having to do with selling, I might have tried to work with it rather than buying a book.
Since some of the items I expect to offer on eBay are expensive (over $100) I wanted to be sure they were presented properly in order to draw a decent group of bidders. For me the book was a worthwhile investment.

I read the Dummys Guide several months ago. Since then I have read a number of other books and watched the Dont Bid On It eBay video. I also read the Simplified Tips for ebay, Schills and Sharks, and several others. After going through everything I am ready to pass along my opinion. I will mainly compare and contrast the Dummys guide with my top choice.

The information in the Dummys Guide was outdated and incomplete. The information was good but there was a lot of important things that were left out. Pages are filled with cute cartoons instead of details ebay users really need. Lots of filler to make the book longer but when compared to newer books, the actual information was thin. It barely comments on snipe bidding but the like Don't Bid On It book(which is also available here at amazon), has a detailed article on snipe bidding plus a chapter on bidding strategies that explains how it works along with other bidding strategies. The Dummys guide only quickly mentions fraudulent sellers and feedback with little explination of how to check it. Dont Bid has an extensive chapter explaining how feedback really works, how to prevent bad buyers from leaving you negative feedback, how to use feedback to spot hijacked or fake accounts, a full chapter on feedback and how it works, it also has a full section on identifying honest buyers and what to do if you do have a problem with a buyer or seller, and much more than I can list here.

Did you know that any seller who says "I am not responsible for loss or damage if you do not buy insurance" is WRONG, they are legally responsible even if the buyer does not pay for insurance.
Did you know that if you select the wrong option when filing a PayPal complaint, your complaint will be automatically rejected and you will not be able to re-file? That is pretty important to know and both of these were in the Dont Bid book but not in Dummys Guide as well as many similar tips.

The Dont Bid book also has a demonstration video. Many of the pages in the Dummys guide were filled with explinations about what webpage to go to and what to do, it was much easier to see it demonstrated in the Dont Bid video than it was to read the step by step in the dummys guide. Some of the Dummy's Guide information was not useful, for example, they explain how to research a bidder by seeing when they return to re-bid every day, but in the Dont Bid book they explain that you should not be bidding against such an inexperienced bidder in the first place because that only runs up the price unnecessarily. By simply waiting until the last minute or using snipe software you can avoid this bidder running up the price. This was not part of the dummys strategy and as far as I can remember, that was the only strategy they had. The Dont Bid book had several bidding and several more buying strategies.

The Dummys Guide gives you enough information to get started on eBay, but not enough to trade safely or enough to buy/sell and obtain the best prices. The Dummys guide is not expensive so give it a read but dont use eBay before you read the Don't Bid On It series, only then will you really know how to use eBay safely and correctly.

This book effectively explains the basics of buying and selling on eBay. However, much of the information can be readily obtained by spending some time on eBay's well-designed website. Those completely unfamiliar with or intimidated by computers would benefit from this book. Most other users would benefit more from buying/selling a few inexpensive items as practice - much less than the cost of the book and you might get some cool junk out of the deal.

There are two real reasons for buying this book.

One is that here is everything you need to know is contained in one, organized book. There is really little that you can learn here that you can't learn on the e-Bay web pages. But there are 386 pages in this book. Looking at that may pages on the web is a real pain, and you will never know if you didn't miss something important.

Two this book has material (especially comments) on subjects that are covered, shall we say, differently on the web pages. Some such subjects: Sniping (entering your bid at the final instant of a bid), searching using mispellings, astronomical shipping costs, and much more.

One problem with books like this one is that the rules on e-Bay change so often and so fast that keeping up with them is a task. This book with ISBN 0470045299 is the Fifth Edition published on October 30, 2006. Be careful if looking and used copies that you aren't getting an earlier, and obsolete edition.

(Hide Review...)  Very out of date
Reviewer Permalink
Like other books in the "...for Dummies" series, this one is well written, informative and fun to read. Unfortunately, it is also very out of date. eBay has changed SO much since it was published that, for me, it was a waste of time and money. I had been an eBay member for about a month when I purchased the book. I had learned the basics simply by participating in the eBay community. What I wanted was not the most basic information, but rather some advanced knowledge, and that was completely lacking. So my advice would be if you understand the basic workings of eBay, go elsewhere for more subtle and/or advanced information. If, on the other hand, you simply want to literally learn how to join, log on, bid or other extremely basic actions, this might be a good book for you. And did I mention I know where you can buy a barely used copy of this book for next to nothing?

(Hide Review...)  A good book if you don't like reading FAQ's on web pages.

I purchased this for a family member who wants to get into eBay selling, and I'm really on the fence about what I want to say about it.

On the one hand, I've given it 4 stars because it does very well address all of the things that someone will encounter and have to deal with / learn when they get involved in eBay selling.

On the other hand, it doesn't tell the person that I purchased it for anything different than I've been telling them myself all along, nor anything that they can't easily learn in 5 minutes of actually reading a page online.

So I guess to sum it up I'll say this:

If you know someone who refuses to simply read the help section on eBay or PayPal's web site, and/or if for some reason that won't simply sit down with you while you show them how to do one auction from start to finish, then yes maybe this book is the answer and the one thing that will finally get them motivated. Maybe reading it in a book, rather than on a web page or sitting with you telling them, is less intimidating to them and this might be exactly what they need.

This is not a book for hard-core eBay users, but if you're just getting started, it is absolutely the best (even if you're not a "dummy"). You don't need anything more than this quick-reading, but sufficiently detailed, introduction to the site. The author writes clearly and simply, and manages to work in a lot of humor. All the basics are covered here.

Why go anywhere else? This is the book I recommend to all my friends.
