Eating Well After Weight Loss Surgery: Over 140 Delicious Low-Fat, High-Protein Recipes to Enjoy in the Weeks, Months and Years after Surgery

In April 2003 Patt Levine underwent "Lap-Band" gastric surgery, one of the primary bariatric surgeries being widely practiced today. As a lifelong foodie, she was expecting the worst when her surgeon's nutritionist handed her dietary guidelines to follow post-surgery, and she was right. With her decades of cooking skills, she immediately set out to devise low-fat dishes that would be just as delicious pureed and chopped as they would be served whole. As an added problem, she wanted to cook for her husband at the same time. This first-ever cookbook for the hundreds of thousands who are lining up for bariatric bypass surgery is proof that it can be done. With collaborator Michele Bontempo-Saray, the author has created 125 recipes that contain no added sugar, are very low in fat, and get their carbohydrates almost exclusively from fruits and vegetables. Each recipe includes specific guidelines for preparation of the dish for every stage of the eating programs for Lap-Band, gastric bypass, and Biliopancreatric Diversion Duodenal Switch (BPD-DS) patients, as well as suggestions for sharing meals with those who have not gone through gastric surgery. Creative recipes cover every meal and food—breakfast and brunch, soups, vegetables, main courses, and sweet indulgences.

This is the best cookbook out there for post bariatric patients. There are wonderful recipes that are easy to prepare and you are given exactly how much protein you will be getting with each meal - which is more important than anything. I love the fact that it was put together by someone who has had the surgery and that she couldn't find a cookbook out there for herself. Face it there isn't much out there for us. This is a great example of a well put together cookbook.

First off I want to say that anyone could make these recipes! There are some reviews on here about how most people wouldn't have these ingredients in their cupboard, the only way that would be true is if you are a backwoods hick who only uses Mrs. Dash!! This cook book is full of common healthy ingredients! It is wonderful! It has a nice gourmet twist to it, but like I said is not to difficult! I really like how it breaks down all the options for the different WLS. The writer of the book had Lap-Band done herself. I totally recommend this book! Although if you are used to having fried fish sticks as seafood, you might not have an open enough mind. Although there are American adapted dishes such as pot roast and beef stroganoff, most of these recipes are somewhat exotic or European. All very good, A++ review, everyone who has had WLS should get this book, even if your just over weight and are on a high protein diet, this is a wonderful cookbook!

I'm a lap-band patient and a picky eater, two things which are not necessarily the best combination. I picked this book up a week after surgery, when I was desperate to at least read about food that wasn't protein shakes or Jell-O. It was much to my surprise that I found an easy dozen recipes on the first pass that sounded as though I'd enjoy them.

Only a dozen? Well, yes. When I say 'picky eater', I mean 'picky eater'; it's not a slight on the book. Entire swathes of it I ignored, but what remained was a good selection. I've made about half a dozen of the recipes thus far and had no disappointments.

The ingredient list is occasionally what might be considered more 'gourmet' but is generally accessible. (And by 'accessible', I mean 'available in central Wisconsin', which is hardly a haven for unusual ingredients.) Thus far, I've only had one recipe call for something I didn't have and couldn't get locally.

Perhaps the thing that makes me love this book the most is the nutritional information provided for each recipe; it's marvelous to know that I'm getting 31.41g of protein out of a meal. The serving guidelines for each stage after surgery are also handy, but should be followed with some amount of caution, as they don't necessarily jive with every surgeon's recommendations.

Although I'm a WLS patient, the rest of my family isn't, and it's great to still be able to serve them tasty food that doesn't usually require much time or culinary expertise. For the price, it's hard to go wrong with this book.

I was hoping for a cookbook with basic, down-to-earth recipes on how to adapt everyday dishes for the post-surgical patient. This wasn't it. The recipes are either very rudimentary (I know how to make an omelet) or party-like dishes. Very disappointing.

I did not like this book's recipes. I have the lap band. A lot of the recipes are pork or seafood which I do not like. The other recipes like the meatloaf did not taste good. Just my personal opinion! Not good for lap band people.

As someone that never cooked before I am finding the recipes easy to follow. Although I'm still trying to find some of the suggestd pantry items, the 2 recipes I made tasted really good. I bought this book awhile ago. It's excellent. It helps get you out of the rut of eating the same old things over and over again. Although, I found the recipes a little bland and added extra as far as the spices go. My family liked the recipes; so there's no fixing a separate dinner. Definitely a must for weight loss pts.

This is just what I needed as I plan for my surgery. The cookbook provides recipes for a wide variety of healthy nutrisious and appetizing options. Let's face it wls is a big decision and means giving up a lot of the "things" that make us happy. That doesn't mean we can't enjoy the food we eat it just means making healthier choises and not making the same mistakes over again.

This cookbook is a good resource for those folks following the weight loss surgery guidelines (or those who happen to live them). It is true that there are some recipes that are better suited for when you have more time but the authors tell you that upfront. There are also some easy recipes (london broil with horseradish cream) that take no time and no fancy ingredients. I personally like the variety and I appreciate that these recipes can work just as well for my husband and son as for me (lap-band patient). With the exception of the Cold Shrimp Soup recipe, I have liked everything I have tried.

I LOVE this book! It has the kind of recipes I loved to prepare prior to WLS, only in a new (for me) low-fat, high-protein way.

I've prepared about 15 recipes from the cookbook and each and every one has been positively delicious - even in the early days when I had to puree them!

I made the Beef Stroganoff the other night and it was so delicious (and smelled so good) that I couldn't wait to warm up the leftovers the next night.

My family eats what I eat/prepare and they have really liked: Chicken Breasts with Creamy Tomato Sauce, No-noodle Zucchini Lasagna, Asian Marinated Scallops, Shrimp Italiano, Moussaka, Shrimp with Coconut-Curry Tomato Sauce, Tofu and Veggie Curry and several of the egg dishes.

The other thing I absolutely love is that each recipe has it's own nutritional information - seeing how much protein and calories each dish has, along with other nutrients, is so important! The authors also include information about how to prepare each item during each stage of the post-surgery process (less than 4 weeks, 4-8 weeks, etc.)

The less-than-positives (which shouldn't stop you from buying this book NOW) is one recipe that I needed to "doctor" (Orange-ginger Tofu - easily rescued with more orange juice and zest) and the fact that I never looked at slicing veggies like eggplant and zucchini horizontally &/or vertically, as is written in the book (shouldn't it be lengthwise &/or crosswise??) - this created some discussion amongst my family members!

Yes, some of the recipes take a little bit of time - cook on the weekend and portion out for your other meals. And some use ingredients that are a little more expensive - buy on sale or consider what you are saving by not buying Haagen Daz and chips and avoiding fast food a couple times a week!

Trust this Italian foodie - this is good, real food!

I recieved the book a week before I had my surgery. I was so excited about it and couldn't wait to try some recipes after sugery. All the information in the begining was great and the nutritional info is very helpful.

Most of the recipes I have tried have been okay. Nothing to write home about. Most of them I skim through and have no interest in making since they are so gourmet and require ingredients I would rather not have to search for at my local stores. I try a new recipe from it every now and then but its not as well used as some of my other recipe books, especially for day to day cooking.

The most disapointing thing is that I thought it would have recipes good for shortly after surgery. I had RNY and at 5 months out still have trouble eating some of them that say okay for 2 weeks out for RNY. I know each person is different, but it seems the food restrictions were not taken into enough consideration for RNY (I dont know how it works for lap banders) I hope this will come more in handy in 6mo. to a year when I can tollerate more meat and heavier foods.

And a warning, many of the recipes call for alcohol, some of them don't cook long enough to cook the alcohol out. And alcohol consumption is a big no no for many in the first several months after surgery so use caution and make sure it cooks out the alcohol or avoid it all together.

While this book is good in the fact it helps us work toward getting more Protein in our bodys it was not good for me as in the area we can not grocery shop for a good deal of the ingredients asked for in this book to make the recipe turn out right. While a good deal of thought went into it apparently no one thought about the ingredients and if they would be readily available to those who wish to try the recipe's inside.

My husband had bariatric surgery in June. When we arrived at the solid food stage, I was in a panic as to what to cook. Moist low fat and tasty food was quite an order.

I have made several recipes from this book and they have been really delicious and satisfying, not just a concession to the bariatric diet. They are not too fussy to prepare and a joy to serve and eat. When I first made the scallops in garlic and wine sauce my husband could not get over how delicious they were.

This is a great cookbook whether you have had bariatric surgery or not and I highly recommend it to anyone. Low fat delicious food is for everyone.

I purchased this book months before my surgery. Once I had my surgery in June, I started going through the book and picking out the recipes that I could have as soon as could eat. This book actually gives you suggestions as to whether or not you should try the recipe depending on what week you are in as well as breakdown of 3 kinds of surgery. I have tried about 20 of the recipes and have loved each of them. I have learned so much from this book. I hope that someone somewhere puts out another cookbook for us post-ops. BTW at 11 weeks post-op I am 100 lbs. down.

The recipes are excellent, what I liked is that they are all simple, with no unnecessary steps or ingredients so that even a non-cook like myself can make them. Highly recommended.

I enjoy this book so much!I no longer need to taste everything before I serve it to my family. Everything(with the exception of the fake cheesecake) is fabulous. My husband and my sons love it also, plus they are seeing how good lower calorie food can taste. Most recipes take under 30 minutes to prepare including cooking time. Some do take longer, but it is well worth it. My nutritionist at Stanford recommended this book and I am so glad she did.
