Eat This Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More!

Eat what you want, when you want--and watch the pounds disappear!

Americans spend more than $400 billion a year eating out, and behind each burger, turkey sandwich, and ice cream sundae is a simple decision that could help you control your weight-and your life. The problem is, restaurant chains and food producers aren't interested in helping you make healthy choices. In fact, they invest $30 billion a year on advertising, much of it aimed at confusing eaters and disguising the fat and calorie counts of their products. All of that has changed with EAT THIS, NOT THAT!. This book puts the entire food industry under the spotlight, and arms you with the savvy tricks and insider information it takes to eat well no matter where you are. With EAT THIS, NOT THAT! you're the expert in every eating situation, from the frozen food aisle to your favorite fast food joint to your local sports bar. You control your food universe-and lose the pounds you want--because, unlike every other customer, you'll know the smart choices to make-instantly!

EAT THIS, NOT THAT! is jam-packed with secrets the restaurant industry doesn't want you to know. For example:
Burger King doesn't want you to know that a BK Big Fish. Sandwich and fries have a whopping 1000 calories-nearly half your daily caloric intake! (Fish is usually healthy, but not this kind. Find out why with this book.)
Pizza Hut doesn't want you to know that a standard pizza in Italy contains 500 to 800 calories, but the same meal at Pizza Hut can top 2,100 calories! (You'd need to ride a stationary bike for more than three hours to burn off this mistake. Instead, eat all the pizza you want by making smart choices. EAT THIS, NOT THAT! shows you how.)
Macaroni Grill doesn't want you to know that a single serving of their Grilled Teriyaki Salmon has more than three times your daily allowance of sodium! (Cut your risk of high blood pressure by making smart choices at the same restaurant. You'll find them inside.)

If only you knew the industry secrets, you could eat at any of your favorite restaurants-or chow down on everything from the company vending machine to your kids' Halloween buckets-and know that every decision you made was smart, healthy, and the best possible choice for you. For example, did you know:
At McDonald's, an Egg McMuffin. is actually a healthy choice, with just 300 calories. (The Hotcakes pack more than double that amount!)
At Krispy Kreme, all you need to do is order the Very Berry Chiller instead of the Mocha Dream Chiller, and you'll save 500 calories! (Do that once a week and you'll drop more than 7 pounds this year-without trying!)
At Chipotle, you can cut 570 calories out of your Chicken Burrito just by ordering it as a bowl (without the tortilla) and asking them to hold the rice. (Same great taste, but with 94 fewer carb grams!)
Choosing a cinnamon roll at Au Bon Pain over Cinnabon will save you 463 calories and 20 grams of fat!
In the freezer section of your local supermarket, a turkey pot pie from Swanson's has 610 fewer calories than a turkey pot pie from Pepperidge Farms.
In the produce aisle, you'll get twice the vitamin C-and nine times as much vitamin A-simply by picking red bell peppers over green ones. (Who said eating healthy was difficult?)

And that's why EAT THIS, NOT THAT! is going to change everything. It's time to level the playing field. We're all tired of sneaky calories adding to our waistlines, and having to starve ourselves or spend hours on the treadmill trying to burn off the damage. Now-for the first time-you're in charge. With this simple illustrated guide to thousands of foods--along with the nutrition secrets that lead to fast and permanent weight loss--you'll make the smartest choice every time!

This is a well-researched, eye-opening report with plenty of information about bad and good foods that are served at well known restaurants.

The book consists of eight chapters, each chapter being focused on a separate issue such as: 1. Foods recommended for every day, and foods to always avoid; 2. The best and worst restaurant meals; 3. Strategies for eating right when dining out; 4. Advice for holiday eating; 5. Strategies for grocery shopping; 6. The ultimate guide to healthy beverages; 7. What to eat in various situations (stress, tiredness, etc.); 8. Eating guide for children

Each chapter provides tons of helpful information presented in a simple, but effective layout. It is an easy and fast reading, with some very nice and helpful pictures. The author made a good job in creating alternative, healthy menus for almost everyone and in any situation.

I especially like the comparison of good and bad meals. For a restaurant of your choice you can find presentation of good and bad meals with detailed information of why they are either good or bad (calories, fat and sodium content, etc).

Of course, it is not possible to list all restaurants in one book so the author concentrates on the chain restaurants that are predominantly known as fast food places. This is a limitation. The other thing that I noticed is that the primary focus is on a fat/sodium contents of the meals discussed. We all know that carbohydrates are not to be ignored when analyzing foods and their effect on our health. This, in my opinion, is a major shortcoming of the book, and for that reason I am subtracting 1 star from the rating.

Otherwise this is a nicely published and useful reference book and I recommend it for all health-conscious people especially those that watch their weight. There is another book that I recommend as extremely useful for planning healthy and not fattening meals. I find especially useful the chapter titled: Obesity - Your Worst Enemy.

Kind of a fun book. They did a good job in giving a wide variety of reviews but I would have preferred if they had given more within each option. It contains a lot of very useful information if you are going to be diligent enough to keep it with you and review it often. I give it a thumbs up.

(Hide Review...)  Takes the guilt out of eating
Reviewer Permalink
I loved this book. For years, I have packed on pounds and have always kicked myself for not keeping it off.

This book is just what I needed for the discipline to watch the calorie intake. You know exactly what to order at a fast food joint, your favorite restaurant (even the mom and pops), and what to get at the grocery store. So the guessing game of choosing the Big Mac (bad idea) over the Quarter Pounder no cheese (good idea) makes for guilt free choices, if you happen to need to eat at the golden arches.

I made an "eat sheet" simply by writing down the one item the book suggested from most of the places I eat at. I keep it in my pocket. I've stuck with eating only those items, and in 2 months lost 11 lbs mainly from this disciplined eating and walking once or twice a week.

I plan to keep using the ideas in this book for the long haul to get back in shape. It makes it pretty easy to do that, in my opinion.

I was a little skeptical when I ordered this book thinking it was just another calorie counting book that would collect dust sitting on the shelf with all the others. However I was amazed when I got the book. It has easy to follow calorie comparisons with photographs. They have the names of most of the restaurants that people eat at and it is amazing how ordering one item that you would think is lower in calories might have five times as many calories of an item almost the same on the same menu. I have a copy for my home and I am going to buy a second on to keep in my car for when I am on the go. This book has saved me thousands of extra calories and I did not sacrifice one thing. Get this book!

I was hoping for a lot more tips that I could use in my own kitchen, but that's not the type of book this is. For those who eat on the go very often, this can be useful. Overall, it felt more like a review of fast food restaurants in America. Some of the calorie counting was only marginally helpful. Like I said, if you eat out for almost every meal, and if you are just really strict about calories and need to watch every bite, then this may be right for you.

A helpful little book that gives readers the run down on the calories contained in the foods served up in fast food outlets and restaurants. The information allows one to sum up the food options, which is good for them, which is not. Which food is too high in calories and is there a better, healthier alternative on the menu.

In an age where many are overweight or obese in the Western World, books like this are always needed to help keep us educated on healthy eating habits.

This is a fun book to go through and gives an idea or two for most fast food/national chain restaurants. Sometimes it's nice to have just a few options. The problem is, if I don't want one of their top choices... I'm out of luck. No other info given. For instance, at Panera bread, they don't recommend ANY sandwiches (instead they want you to eat 1/3rd of a little pizza? Right.) Now I'm wishing I had bought the Calorie King book instead, less fun and flashy but more comprehensive. 2008 CalorieKing Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter (Calorie King) Then again, if I take this one out to lunch, it's a conversation piece - the other one just makes me a diet nerd :)

I actually bought this book for my sister (it was on her Wish List) but after she unwrapped it we both became fascinated by the information contained therein. Some of the items listed in the "bad choices" truly surprised me.

Now, I hasten to add that you still have to read the book carefully. Just because a choice is "better" doesn't mean it's not loaded with calories. Sometimes it's 29 grams of fat vs. 35. So, just pay attention :)

The other thing I really think is helpful is that there are sections about supermarket choices and holiday eating.

And my sister likes it because it's an easy size to keep with you in the car, so that you can have the book handy wherever you end up.

I picked up this book after going to Men's Health website and viewing the Eat This section. It's a good book to keep on hand while you're eating out. The only thing I have a problem with in this book is that the author is still in the less carbs, the better mentality. Low carb diets aren't as popular as they used to be, and as someone who's on Weight Watchers, sometimes my carb intake will outnumber protein, and I have still lost weight, hence the 3 stars.

This book had a lot of very useful information. It was interesting to know that some of the things I was ordering in restaurants, I had actually chosen to be healthier, and they weren't healthy at all... Having said that, a lot of the comparisons they make are meal vs meal when I would have found it much more useful had they done sandwich vs sandwich (or food vs food) - For instance: they compare a meal consisting of a cheeseburger with fries and regular coke to a meal of a chicken sandwich, salad and a diet coke - So is it the fries or the burger? While I'm sure it is a little of both, I would have rather had a direct comparison.

Anytime I go out to eat at a chain restaurant, I will consult this book first! It has interesting facts about the most common chain restaurants in the U.S., and great ways to avoid eating things that are horrible for you. I don't like its focus on carbs (it seems to repeat this idea that carbs are somehow bad for you--while certain types of carbs eaten in excess are not good for you, I don't follow the avoid-carbs-at-all-costs thing). It also provides great information on the types of foods you should go for in certain situations--like the 4th of July, movie theatre, vending machine, Easter & Halloween, etc. It will be a great resource.

This book is informative and interesting. I like the approach of not looking to diet per se, but to make an informed decision wherever you are eating.

I appreciated the emphasis on different types of calories- rather than just total caloric content of a given food- which is a point I'd previously neglected to consider.

I'd recommend this book as an aid in maintaining healthy everyday eating habits, avoiding harmful and pointless diets.

(Hide Review...)  Better Choices of Bad Foods!
Reviewer Permalink
This little book by David Zinczenko, editor in chief of Men's Health magazine, is well written and full of eye-friendly pages of pictures of food choices. The pages are laid out in a logical easy to follow display. This book is great for someone who is clueless about nutrition and averse to healthy eating. It still lets people go to unhealthy casual and fast food restaurants, but gets them thinking about what they are eating. It also discusses holiday and events foods. The book highlights high calorie, fat laden foods comparing them with healthier alternatives, and lists other good and bad choices.

What I most like about the book is its 8 healthy foods that Zinczenko recommends we eat each day - spinach, yogurt, tomatoes, carrots, blueberries, black beans, walnuts, and oats. Now these foods and similar counterparts are healthy choices. When you find yourself in an unhealthy restaurant, how about asking the server for a custom meal or a few side dishes that include foods similar to Zinczenko's 8 healthy foods?

Basically, this book can be used to begin getting used to the idea of thinking about what is in foods and their nutritional value. I have a young friend who is just beginning to think about his health and weight, but still loves his burgers. This book offers better choices of bad foods. I recommend this book for someone who is just beginning to consider what they are eating. For someone truly serious about nutrition, health, and losing weight, I recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams

Although I WILL agree with some of the other reviewers that a few of the choices on the NOT THAT side seem to have fewer calories or sodium or fat than their counterpart on the EAT THIS side, I found the book enlightening, informative and sound.

The samples of restaurant menus with notations on "what to order instead of.....". and the reasons why -- were very good.

The color photos are great, the breakdown of even what Movie Theatre candy to consume is outstanding, and I liked the sections on what to eat/not eat for the holidays.

The color of some of the typefaces poses a legibility problem. I would suggest that the author stay away from using lime green typeface in future editions.

All in all, "Eat This Not That" is a great, indispensable little book. I can feel the weight falling off already......!

I have to admit from the outset that although I've scanned the book several times I have not actually bought it. I think the main two reasons are that I don't really eat fast food very often and that the thought of carrying this book around with me as a reference is just not something I'd like to do. On the several occasions when I've read through the book, I did find some interesting little tidbits and a few surprises but to think that I would be able (or interested) in committing all these menu items to memory is just not exciting or realistic for me, especially since many of these types of items are in a constant state of modification.

I think people need to understand the basics of nutrition and then apply them to their daily eating habits instead of carrying around a reference book with them. If, on occasion, they wish to "indulge" themselves with some tempting fast food item, so be it - just as long as they have developed an overall healthy lifestyle which includes a good, simple, realistic diet and exercise program that they can easily fit into their daily lives.

This book is a great resource for someone who is trying to make healthier choices! It is very easy to read and makes sensible and doable recommendations for eating right. I especially love the grocery shopping section to help me make better buying decisions. It is compact and fits in my purse. I also enjoy the colorful pictures.

This book is Awesome! For those on the go, this book allows you to make wise choices while dining out at Fast Food restaurants...I have been following weight watchers and felt guilty eating at fast food restaurants but this book lays down guidelines that allows you to make wise food choices and you actually maintain or lose weight! It's a great book! I highly recommend it!! :)

This information in this book will probably surprise you if not shock you. I only wish it was much more extensive and listed many more items for each establishment.

This book was a fascinating read. It gave you real insight into the everyday foods that you eat. It should be known as the hadnbook for dieters. It allows you to go to regular places to eat but make smarter choices of what to eat. It allows you to almost trick your mind. "You are still able to say I am eating at Wendy's but you are making a smarter choice of what you are eating.

This book is not only good for the information that it holds, but also very entertaining and delightful to read. Every page has large colorful photos of selections that you may make in chain restaurants, and gives details about the nutritional content of the items. But the info is given in a way that makes it not only informative, but fun to read as well. Who would have thought that ordering a Quarter Pounder without the cheese at McDonald's would be better for you than the Premium Grilled Chicken Club? Some items analyzed were obvious (like ordering a side salad with light dressing instead of fries), but most were really eyeopeners. For example, I thought that going for cheese pizza would be lower in fat and calories than any type of topped pizza. Wrong! At Cici's, for example, ham and pineapple pizza has less calories and fat than plain cheese pizza. Other food items bought in stores are also reviewed, and menus are looked at as a whole too. I recommend this to anyone who wants to make smarter choices, even if you think you already know this. You'll be surprised!
