I really like this book, it helps you to buy a product that is much better for you to eat the right food and at the same time to lose weight, at work there are a couple of people that have purchased this book and they really like it also.

I am into nutrition an didn't think I could learn much from these books, but I was wrong. They are compact, yet contain very important information from pesticides used, how to tell if fruit or veggies are ripe, the FDA, rodents and bugs in factories, nutritional information on product, and very good "eat this not that" comparisons.

No joke! To date I have lost 20lbs (and solely because of my dietary changes). This book opened my eyes to packaging trickery and what to look out for on labels. Now, I always read the labels on things I buy, actually purchased some of the suggested items in the book and switched to mostly organic fruits and veggies. Love this book! It's so informative and induces a lot of "Holy cow" moments...I couldn't put it down!

I thought these books were great until I looked at the Ice cream section and saw that Ben and Jerrys was selected as a good choice because it was trade compliant. It was actually selected over more healthy choices on the "not that" side. Thats not what I was looking for when I bought the book.

This book takes the mystery out of shopping for food. Some products have so many ingredients that you need all day to shop. Many food products have hidden ingredients in them and you may not notice unless you read carefully. This book makes it more easy to shop carefully. My husband, being a diabetic, makes me read labels carefully. Much sugar and salt is hidden in many foods. This book is great. Barb Petry

This book was very interesting. It provides insight into what you should and should not buy at the grocery store if you want to cut calories. I was amazed as I try to eat healthy that some of the things I was buying weren't quite as healthy as I thought.

I read the yellow and the orange books from the library. Glad I did before I decided to buy them. I have few problems with these books.
-Many of the items on the "eat this" this are still horribly bad for you.
-Some things on the "eat this" list in one book is on the "not that" list in another book.
-Many of the items they compare, I don't buy to begin with
-When I wrote items down to get at the grocery store I discovered the brand I was already buying was better than what they recommended.
-Some the items they recommend I have tried and they taste horrible. Apparently this is not taken into account.
-Some things are not explained or may not be even be true. Example, they recommended a certain brand of pasta but looking at the nutrition it was no better than any other pasta. Why is it better? Are companies paying these guys?
I give this an ok rating because it does have some good advice to consider and is a good starting place though the book is flawed. I recommend you get the book on loan, not buy it. And just go ahead in the store and compare the labels on the products you buy to others like it. And if you frequent a restaurant get the nutrition menu on the way out so next time you can pick the lesser of the evils that you still like.

The best thing about this particular Eat This, Not That book is you can have ice cream (as shown on the cover) and chocolate, just know which ones are the better choice. I particularly find this information the best in the series. It is important to understand how to get the most out of your shopping experience. If you are at the supermarket and you don't have this book with you (or the information with you) you are at the mercy of some nasty ingredients.

One thing I find fascinating is that Reduced Fat or any label with that can tweak the recipe to include more empty calories and sugars.
If you don't buy this book, you should know you are missing out on some easy to read information that you could take with you in any food market.

Eat This Not That Supermarket Survival Guide actually helped radically change the shopping and eating patterns of friends and family almost overnight! The nutritional information is so well presented, on-target and up-to-date that it absolutely cannot fail to improve your shopping skills, no matter how much you've already read in books and magazines on nutrition. You just might be amazed at the mistakes you've been making on picking alleged "diet foods."

Davi Zinczenko and Matt Goulding's "no-diet weight loss solutions" are life savers that everyone can use. I love this book and have given copies to others because it makes the right (and sometimes life-saving) decisions in the supermarket a snap.

Buy this book and I promise you will be thrilled by how the author presents his research!

I had seen David Zinczenko on The Bonnie Hunt Show and really liked the information he gave. This book is a supermarket version, that you can fit in your purse, or a big pocket. His philosophy is that you can make small changes in what you eat and still lose weight--without being on a "diet". Very helpful, relevant information that pairs a good choice (low fat, lower sodium, less sugar, etc) with a bad choice--often using two versions of the same brand. In the Canned and Jarred Vegetables section, Green Giant's Extra Sweet Corn Niblets are on the good side, while Green Giant's Corn Niblets are on the bad.

We bought this at Christmastime and everyone who was here visiting picked it up and read portions of it. If you are on the road to eating healthier, this is invaluable!

Although I was aware of the "Eat This, Not That! [ETNT]" series of books, I didn't think that they would be useful for me, as I am someone who already reads food labels and is conscientious about my grocery shopping choices. However, I received this book as a gift, so I read it to discover whether there was anything I could learn.

The authors begin with some helpful yet basic information on food and dietary choices. This covers everything from how the American diet has changed over the past 50 or so years to what the food industry doesn't want you to know to a review of 20 of the worst packaged foods in America (as in all of the ETNT books, the foods mentioned are common, familiar name-brand items). The book then spends the next approximately 60 pages discussing the fundamentals of healthy eating, including reviewing various types of vegetables and how to select them, explaining the benefits of organic produce, and addressing other issues, such as choosing meats and creating a healthy refrigerator. Finally, almost a third of the way into the book the authors begin to introduce their actual Eat This-Not That selections. The foods are organized loosely by type as well as by where they are found in the kitchen (e.g., "The Refrigerator," "Pantry Staples," "The Freezer Section," etc.).

Now, my impressions. First, I am very proud to say that very few of the "Not That!" products were items that can be found in my own home. This is because the authors generally focus on overall calories, saturated fat, and sugars, specific criteria that I look at myself when I read food labels. On the other hand, some of their recommendations surprised me. For example, in the "Dry Noodles" category, they recommended Ronzoni Healthy Harvest Wheat Spaghetti, 180 calories, 2 grams fat (0 sat), 6 grams fiber. However, they gave a "Not That!" rating to Barilla Whole Grain Spaghetti, 200 calories, 1.5 grams fat (0 sat), 6 grams fiber--a negative which hardly seems deserved for a measly 20 calories more per serving. In another "Not That!," the authors complain that a Weight Watchers ice cream sandwich is "heavy on the sugar" at 12 grams, yet they recommend Turkey Hill, Oreo, Breyer, and So Delicious ice cream sandwiches, all of which have higher fat gram totals. And finally, as mentioned above, the authors' main criteria seemed to be calories, saturated fat, and sugars. They only occasionally discuss other nutritional benefits of the products such as fiber and protein (the latter being particular important to a frequent exerciser like myself). Similarly, high sodium is mentioned in some cases but also seems to be given a pass in some recommended products.

This isn't to say that I didn't learn anything from this book, however. First, it made me realize that sometimes my own reading of labels is still a bit inconsistent. Based on several specific products which appeared here, I realized that there are times when I am selecting "low-fat" products which are still high in sugar. I also learned more about some chemical fillers, such as maltodextrin, a carbohydrate used to replace fat. And I do plan to bring this book with me during my next trip to the grocery store; I think it will be particularly useful in helping me choose amongst frozen lunch entree choices. For those who have neither the time nor the patience to read food labels on their own, this book is definitely likely to be a helpful shorthand guide to making better, healthier choices in the supermarket. However, even more experienced shoppers like myself may learn something new as I did, and so despite some of the issues that I noted above, I would recommend this book.

While this book is colorful and does give good points, many of the recommended items are not readily available in grocery stores, or are twice the price of the "not that" items.
It does point out that we do need to read the labels more and perhsps as more people pay attention to those labels companies will learn they must do a better job on making foods healthier.

(Hide Review...)  USELESS FOR LOW CARBING DIETERS & DIABETICS - NO CARB COUNTS!!
Reviewer Permalink
Where is the DIABETIC and LOW CARBOHYDRATE versions of these books for even those who just want to keep their weight down to normal. There are NO `'carb'' counts in this book whatsoever, NOT EVEN ONE!! Please continue to read all of below to understand WHY this is so important to have included, and for EVERYONE....

I was extremely disappointed and downright SHOCKED because I'm a Diabetic able to have been staying OFF of medications for many YEARS, and controlling with low carb foods instead and successfully, and was looking forward to having the CARB counts available in such an information saturated book finally....

I never even dreamed that carb counts would be eliminated at all, much less so completely in ANY nutritional food book, therefore I mistakenly didn't make SURE first that they were included and am SO angry, because otherwise I'm in LOVE with this book and the presentations, and wanted to buy ALL of them, till finding out that it's worthless to we who are carb conscious and concerned about high glucose [which EVERYONE should be], about healthy eating and also about losing or maintaining proper weight, all in addition TO proper glucose levels. It's only Calories, Sugar count [in only some products] and FATS.......

America has gotten OBESE on low fat diets through the decades, which has been ADMITTED by the experts, Doctors, etc. and still they're pushing LOW FAT consciousness instead of Low Carbohydrates and ignoring those completely? With low carbing there is NO raise in cholesterol even WITH fats, which nobody realizes without really investigating this philosophy of eating and I'm living proof of it in all my medical records throughout this past decade.....

I was going to get the Restaurant Guide first but then decided on the Supermarket Guide as a first tester instead, figuring it would cover all products and the most important book of all and it is truly wonderful for those with NO weight or glucose concerns, but how many of us are totally NORMAL. Weight gain AND Diabetes are the two fastest growing disorders even in CHILDREN now. Parents also NEED carb counts FOR their kids to set them on the right track early, to avoid these issues later in life and especially the elderly too as WELL as middle agers ....

I have no disappointments with the book except it is SO incomplete without Carb Counts, and useless for me because that is my number ONE concern, and should be everyone's....... Sugar I never eat anyway and try to stay AWAY from products with sugar in them [which everyone should], but low carbs are JUST as important, in fact even MORESO because all carbs TURN to sugar in the system AFTER ingested and digested....

I also purchased `'Hungry Girl 200" etc., and no carb counts there either. What is this world coming to......they're going backwards after all we've learned about nutrition and the importance of limited carbohydrates in our diets and only eating the good one's, salads, NON-starchy vegetables, etc, which ALSO means lower sugar in the metabolizing process if lowest carbs.....

I'm disgusted that this seems to be the trend now, with these most popular books. That is a gigantic FLAW which renders these books absolutely WORTHLESS to people like us, which is most of us, actally ALL of us in the world, if not Diabetic, then trying not to BECOME Diabetic or overweight, so please be forewarned...

I am going to write to them and request a low carb along with low sugar edition or at least ADDED to the counts in future books. Please HELP, because I'm only one person, and though I don't usually write `letters to companies, the books are THAT good to not overlook this and to see what we NEED added to them.

These books were a great idea, they just FORGOT to include the most important thing. If people ARE nutrition conscious, which is their target, then how COULD they eliminate carb counts, of COURSE nutrition conscious people include LOW CARBS in their eating philosophy and regimens. Carbs, Calories, ,Sugar, Fat, and SODIUM are the 5 MOST important things to list, I don't think salt is there either, but I wasn't focusing on that YET because of being too devastated that the carbs aren't there, so I didn't care about the rest anymore....

This book is aimed at the OLD way of thinking from the 50's and before that all we need to care about is calorie. Sugar and fat content....... It's from the dark ages. They have to totally RE-THINK, and RE-EVALUATE what they're doing or put an isolated book out FOR diabetics and other low carbers, since it's too late to add to THESE already published which are a waste for the truly INFORMED nutrition conscious. SHAME on them. I am heartbroken by this and don't want to see anyone else receive these series of books and go through the same shock.... not from even one of the books, as I did.

(Hide Review...)  My new shopping reference
Reviewer Permalink
I love this book. I've read other reviews and criticisms about this book, and while I can understand the viewpoints of the negative reviews, I still love this book. It is hands down the best "food" advice book I've read for my lifestyle and habits and will become a primary reference book for me in months to come.

This is not really designed for people who are already good about "shopping the perimeter", though those folks also may find useful information. It's primarily for people who are confused by food labels, can be lured by the tricky marketing phrasing that the FDA allows, or who need things broken down into layman's language. There are sections on fruits and vegetables and meat, what each are useful for, which are recommended seeking organics for, how best to store them so they stay fresher longer. There is a section about spices, and one about wise choices for salad bars. The bulk of the book, though, is comprised of side by side comparisons of specific food brands/flavors by category. For example, on the ice cream page there may be 5-6 specific types in the Eat This section, and another 5-6 on the Not That page.

The book is very specific in these comparisons...for example, you wouldn't see a "buy Dreyer's instead of Haagen Daaz" type of statement. Instead, you'd see something like "Dreyer's Slow Churn vanilla is better than Haagen Daaz French Vanilla and here are the stats on the label to demonstrate why"...many of the criticisms disliked this formula because it was SO specific. For me, however, it served as more of a reinforcement of the label-reading information shared earlier in the book; by seeing examples of WHY one particular item is better than another, I feel better armed to read other food labels with more confidence.

What I really liked about this book, aside from the general information I was gleaning, is that it doesn't shy away from the way most real people in America eat. Most diet and diet-like books preach the same sorts of things: candy is bad, sugar is bad, stay away from these things. This book says "Look...chocolate bars are bad. We know they are bad. But there are days when we're going to eat them anyway, so when those days come, you'd be smarter to pick a candybar from THIS column instead of THAT column." Just like with involving kids in decision-making that gives them a choice and therefore a "buy-in" to the process, being told that I have an actual choice that may be better for me rather than having to deny deny deny has already changed my perspective on things.

So...bottom line for me: this book may not be for everyone. Some may see it as too simplistic, some not generic enough. For me, it's been a blessing and has made me highly optimistic, even excited, about future grocery shopping endeavors. I have the restaraunt version of this book too, and I can't wait to dive into it and discover its gems.

This is one of the most unusual products, in the sense that it does what its advertising says it'll do. Take the cover illustration as an example. It doesn't say "Don't eat ice cream, you're on a diet." It doesn't even say "Cut back on the ice cream, you're on a diet." It says how many calories, how much fat, how many sugars you can cut back on by eating one brand over another. It has the 'best' and the 'worst', but it also has about ten shades of gray in the middle too. So you can experiment with whatever taste/health trade-off you feel ready for. It has a tremendous number of different foods in it. (and that's probably the single warning you should get concerning this book. It'll take you more than a single reading to digest.) It lets you save fat on every helping of what you like. The more you eat, the more fat you'll save. I like this book.

I've read lots of diet books over the years. I can spout the downfalls of Atkins and South Beach Diet in my sleep, and there was a two-month period in my early 20s that I ate pretty much nothing but rice and steamed vegetables. But diets like that aren't practical, especially when you're a working mother also trying to sneak healthful foods in on two preschoolers, and trying to omit food dyes and boost omega 3 foods for the kiddo with ADHD.

So forgive me for a minute as I do a happy dance for finding Eat This, Not That. Without sounding cheesy, this is really a book that can change the way you eat, and most importantly, the way you shop.

The best thing about this book is that it includes name brand recommendations and photographs of the food packaging, so there's not a lot of guesswork about what foods are preferred choices and why they are better. Think turkey breast is turkey breast? Guess again. This book will help you pick the brand that's the most nutritionally sound.

Another favorite feature -- the photo illustrations of the "perfect fridge". The author has assembled the best of the bunch in every category just to make your shopping list building a little easier.

I love this book. I got it from the library, and fully plan to buy it and use it as a reference moving forward. It's common sense nutrition information and advice for real people that are trying to make the healthiest choice possible and wade through the sea of marketing and confusing product packaging. I'd call it a must read for anyone that eats. Period.

This is a very interesting book, full of information. Recently we were on vacation with a houseful of people, and everyone had to pick up and read a few pages whenever they were sitting around. Much useful information.

I thoroughly enjoy this book, and have gotten a lot of surprises. Things I thought were good weren't, and I pride myself on knowing healthy ways to eat. This has truly been a revelation to me. Thank you!

I'm a very health-conscious teen. I do all the grocery shopping in my family, which allows me to use my own judgment on many of the items I pick out. This book is a great guide to choosing the healthiest products. I've learned some surprising info and have gotten great meal/snack ideas along the way. I refer to this book a lot. It's not only helpful when going to the super market, but it's just fun to read!

I think we all should have a copy of this book. I learned some interesting things about the foods that I "thought" were a good choice.

A great book because rather than just telling you what you can't eat - it shows you options that you can still have. It makes you think about healthy substitutions and points out things I wouldn't know on my own. It helps when making my grocery list, and I tend to remember what "to eat" when making decisions at the store. I would recommend purchasing this with the restaurant version as well.

This book helps to cut the fat out of dietary/nutrition writing. Helpful in navigating today's mega-supermarkets. Unfortunately, most of the things i love fall under the "Don't eat that." category. Such is life my friend!

this book has some good ideas in it but it is not clear if for instance on the frozen pizza page if every pizza that is on the 'not that' side is worse then every one on the 'eat this' side it does make notes comparing specific ones to each other on each page but it would be nice for them to say out of all of these is THE one to get. I also got the eat this not that book with a black cover and it includes restaurants and feel that it is a better one to get because it has both store items and restaurant items in it.

This is a very informative book and filled with lots of information. For someone who doesn't want to give up on certain foods this book gives you an alternative that may be better. The only thing is that I can't remember all the time and find I need to carry the book with me while food shopping!
