If you've ever wondered why the latest fad diet doesn't work for you... well, there are lots of reasons, mostly the fact that it's a fad diet. But it could also be that you're the wrong blood type for the kinds of foods the diet recommends. Peter D'Adamo makes a persuasive argument that your blood type is an evolutionary marker that tells you which foods you'll process best, and which will be useless calories. He covers the entire range for each of the four blood types, from entrées to condiments and seasonings, and also makes type-specific exercise and lifestyle recommendations.

If your goal is to read a book that will provide you with peer reviewed articles cited, scientific studies referred to, etc. before you try the diet then you should save your money because you will not find these things here. If all you do is read the book, and you want hard science, look elsewhere.
BUT, if you are willing to experiment with your diet based on anecdotal evidence only because you want to feel and look better than you have in years, buy this book. In the past I have had trouble with weight and also a great deal of trouble with PMS. For years I have tried to find answers to the problem, but nothing ever did the trick. I would try to eat "healthy" foods, whole wheat homemade baked food, light meats like chicken, soy, lentil soups... things that I thought were good for me. What would happen is that I would feel so tired all the time and gain weight. Terrible! The times I gave up and ate red meat were the times I was my thinnest, but I never got rid of the PMS. Recently my doctor said I should remove yeast from my diet entirely which meant a lot of foods had to be eliminated. Once again I did a lot of cooking - but because my diet was so restrictive I really noticed how certain foods made me feel. Anything with wheat in it made me feel just awful. I mentioned this to my doctor who then asked my blood type... and so I bought this book. In two days I found my energy levels and mood to be enormously improved. In 4 days the rash I have always had on my upper arms went away and my arms are a smooth as a baby's behind! Overall, my skin is softer and just healthier looking. I sleep deeper and awaken feeling good. My mood is so stable, I am not irritated or blue half the time - I just feel GOOD. My concentration is better, I feel sharper. As to wieght loss, I feel like I am losing but it is only day 7. Speaking of weight loss, many people speak about this as a diet book and talk about how much they have lost - but that isn't what this book is about. This is a lifestyle change, and I can tell you that if I can feel this good and yet remain my current weight I would still count myself as lucky. This type O will never miss wheat - or the other things I should not eat - and why would I? I do not remember the last time I felt this good. I don't pick up a hammer and start hitting my knee in spite of the pain, and I won't eat a bagel for the same reason. Can't recommend this book enough - why not try it? Eat Right 4 Your Type is a revolutionary work. The author recognizes our differences in heritage and blood type and then makes appropriate diet and exercise recommendations. He explains that people with each blood type process food and fight disease and stress differently, and therefore thrive on different diets. The premise is interesting and makes sense on an intuitive level since blood type is such a fundamental physiological distinction. For example, Type O's should eat more protein, less grains, and do aerobic exercise, Type A's should eat vegetarian, exercise less vigorously, and meditate, Type B's should eat a diverse diet, and exercise moderately, and Type AB's are a combination of A's and B's and should also do relaxation exercises.
The Contents include: Introduction: The Work of Two Lives Part I: Your Blood Type Identity One: Blood Type: The Real Evolution Revolution Two: Blood Code: The Blueprint of Blood Type Three: The Blood Type Solution: A road Map Part II: Your Blood Type Plan Four: Blood Type O Plan Five: Blood Type A Plan Six: Blood Type B Plan Seven: Blood Type AB Plan Part III: Your Blood Type Health Eight: Medical strategies: The Blood Type Connection Nine: Blood Type: A Power Over Disease Ten: Blood Type and Cancer: The Fight to Heal Epilogue: A Wrinkle of Earth Afterword: A Medical Breakthrough for the Ages Appendix A: Blood Type Charts Appendix B: Common Questions Appendix C: Glossary of Terms Appendix D: Notes on the Anthropology of Blood Type Appendix E: The Blood Type Subgroups Appendix F: Resources Appendix G: References Appendix H: Survey Index A classic - this book is an interesting and worthwhile read. I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreamsas a companion book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-27 07:47:11 EST)

Having read this book, I keep referring to it over and over. Once you start thinking how your body asks for certain foods and others are intuitively not for you, the information in this book explains why and reinforces what you know about your body, helping you make better decisions about what is best for you.

Shortly after having my son in 1993, my health 'challenges' began to worsen. I've known since age 6 that I was allergic to milk when diagnosed by a doctor, but just had a feeling there was more. I had some allergy tests and all the doctor could tell me was the indoor/outdoor allergies I had and the one thing I already knew...dairy. Eventually body forced me to eliminate numerous foods that I had eaten for years. My body had enough.
One day I had been watching a morning show and saw Peter D'Adomo promoting Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type. I thought it sounded logical and decided to give it a try. As soon as I began reading from the very beginning. I found out how logical it was. I'll let you see for yourself. ;) As I came upon my blood type and read all that I should/shouldn't have, the exercises, the personality of said blood type, etc; I was amazed. It hit me right on the heat. Everything I had recently eliminated from diet was what I shouldn't be eating. I began to implement the entire regimine for my type and never felt healthier my entire life and lost more than 60 pounds. Do I recommend this book? I certainly recommend at least reading the introduction and forward. {:O) Everyone owes to their wellbeing. ;) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-21 00:54:10 EST)

In the Western world, it's pretty "all food works for all people", right? Some of us discover that we have allergies to certain foods and stop eating these. Other times, we have health issues that we don't have a clue as to their source.
Peter D'Adamo has studied food vs. blood type. He breaks foods out and lists what foods work best for your particular blood type, but also which ones are likely to cause you problems. Blood type to me still seems too broad, it should be possible by studying genetics to come up with a better list with much finer resolution. Such a study as not been done, so we are left to work with what we have and that is blood type. So, this book is useful in that it gets you thinking in a direction that may help you identify the foods that are causing you grief. For instance, there are some foods that cause ALL blood types grief, those might be good to avoid altogether! I have been playing with the concepts and leaning in the direction that according to D'Adamo is correct for my blood type. I have to admit most of my little nagging physical issues have all but extinguished. Thus, I consider it worth a read! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-09 01:56:08 EST)

I was suprised at how much information this book provides. I now understand why my body reacted in the manner it did when I ate certain foods. I never realized how my blood type and diet could affect my overall health. After reading this book and making minor changes, I have seen a profound change in my energy level and my immune system has changed in a positive manner. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to empower themselves, and to enjoy a healthier way of living.

If the book is authentic and reaches a large audience - this book will make real change for a lot of people and visa a versa.
In addition to reading this book - you may want to consider reading - The Apo E Gene Diet: A Breakthrough in Changing Cholesterol, Weight, Heart and Alzheimer's Using the Body's Own Genes by Pamela McDonald an Integrative Medicine Fellow - graduate of Dr Andrew Weil's University of Arizona Program in Integrative medicine program. THE APO E GENE DIET "This book represents the future of medicine, an individualized, personalized approach that honors our genetic uniqueness. I've been into the practice of eating based on my blood type for nearly 20 years since I first stumbled on this way back then. This book is new and updated to today's healthy standards and is quite different in many respects, some disagreeable. I believe this is a way of life, and something to maintain as a regular eating habit not a "diet" by today's understanding of what a diet is.
In my studies of nutrition, this the Blood Type Diet is a wonderful way to find and maintain your optimal healthy state of being. I'd like to see this book broken down further into the blood type sub-types. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-23 17:56:15 EST)

These types of books are usually hard for me to read, however Eat Right 4 your type is very intertesting! I have found why my stomach gets upset after i eat something and I am never sure as to what or why. I have cut out those foods and I feel 100% better. For anyone who has ever had tummy problems, this book is very educational.

Although the first chapters are the origination of blood types from an anthropolicgal and scientific persspective, I found it quite interesting and easily understood. The origination of blood types will help anyone to formulate an eating plan that will work for their body type which, will help with the maintenance of weight and health. One of my friends simply followed the plan of "beneficial foods for blood type" and has lost 12 lbs without much effort. Also, given my blood type, eating mainly from the beneficial food types should help with the arthritic condition I have. I believe the book to be helpful for a healthy life!

This book is totally awesome. I decided to try it for two weeks to see if it would fail, like all diets do, and to my surprise not only did I lose several inches in those two weeks, but I feel like a million bucks, not to even mention going down from 163 to 144 in two months, which allowed me to go from a size 12, down to a size 8, which I haven't worn in 15 years.
I love how he breaks it down so easily which foods are good for my blood type and which one's cause problems for my blood type, no confusion at all. And there is soooooo much food that works well with my blood type that I actually get tired of eating before I have eaten everything I'm supposed to eat in a day. I've donated all of my old clothes because I'm never going back! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-14 03:13:28 EST)

This is a very interesting book and one everyone should have. I had no idea that you should eat according to your blood type. All this time I thought I was eating healthy, I came to find out that I was eating the wrong things according to my blood type. No wonder I could never lose weight. I am so glad I found this book!

Sometimes certain books can lead you down another path of related books... unfortunately my path didn't include this book until it was 'too late.' Several years ago, I began a health quest and ended up reading several books on vegetarianism. After eating vegetarian for about 8 months or so, I was getting worse instead of better. In fact, I was developing new symptoms I never had before, like sensitive teeth and fatigue. One of my closest friends has been vegetarian for 30 years, so I asked her about it. Why wasn't it working for me? The first question she asked was my blood type. When I said I am blood type O, she said "No wonder! You need meat." She's blood type A, so she does well as a vegetarian. She referred me to this book. Within a few weeks of eating meat again, I began improving.
This also turned out to be true for my husband as well. He was raised in a vegetarian family, but began eating meat on his own as an adult (instinctively) and feels much better on meat - he's also type O. He'd never heard of the blood type theory either. The main thing I want to stress is that without ever hearing of this blood type theory or knowing the book existed, it turned out to be true. Sometimes the argument can be made that people subconsciously make true what they believe, but neither my husband or I knew about this idea until we'd both already found vegetarian diets don't work well for us. There are some vegetarians out there who vehemently detest this book and want the whole world to be vegetarian. But we aren't all the same; it's just a fact. What works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for another. There's no "one diet" for all of mankind. The blood type theory explains why. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-06 23:08:51 EST)

It's been about 10 days since I first started following the guidelines in this book. I'm blood type A, which demands a vegetarian lifestyle. It was and still is very difficult, as I always lived my life as a meat-eater. Anyway, I did not make gradual changes; I plunged right in and omitted all the "avoid" food list. About 3 days later, I started to experience a number of discomforts ranging from headaches, mild fever, symptoms of sinus infection and colds, snuffy nose, sleepiness (a couple hours after waking up from a 10-hour sleep!), etc., which made me question the foods I was eating. And then my sister said that I may just be detoxing. And I think she was right. I read up on the topic and found that I am in fact experiencing symptoms of food detoxing. I have yet to lose weight, but I'm sticking to this and will see what happens.

Read and digested ER4YT and would love to agree with the Good Dr. - but feel that we need a little basic statistical research to confirm D'Adamo's conclusions:
I was left with the (unsubstantiated) conclusion that if you are not a blessed type-O, you are doomed to live a short, physically delicate and socially unachieving existance ..... until one of the many human ailments lurking to take out the weak no-Os gets you. Is the Good Dr really suggesting that all homo sapiens 'achievers' from Olympians through to successfull Captains of Industry and leaders of men must be type O - due to their natural attributes of superior muscular physiques/hunter-killer psyches/minds which feed on stress for breakfast ..... coupled with inexhaustable reserves of physical and mental stamina which leaves the non-O loser packs struggling ! Surely a simple follow-up analysis to confirm the claimed type-O dominance can be done to present actual proof from the huge history of Olympic champions, successful business persons, leaders in all walks of life ? Numbers please - and we can put this book's statements into a credible scientific context ...... maybe we should be hired and promoted by our blood type potential indeed ! On a personal note, D'Adamo might well be onto something: my girlfriend is a stereotype-O as described: eats meat twice daily, lives in a rock solid, naturally muscular (and seemingly inexaustable) physique, relishes physical and mental challenges, is a natural social and career leader, and likes nothing better than to demonstrate her brawn and stamina at leasure and familly events by outswimming/outrunning and outlasting allcomers. Lucky type-A me (I think !) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-14 19:40:05 EST)

I am 56 yrs old & after being very healthy most of my life--at 53; I started having many health issues--fast weight gain almost 60 lbs in 8mths!), thyroid issues, arthritis, high blood pressure, chest pains, ect.... After spending last 3 yrs seeing SO MANY doctor's with little to no luck in resolving any of these issues-- I heard about this book from a friend who is a big homeopathic user. So, I thought, well why not?
I bought the book from Amazon & have been on the diet (about 90% true) for the past 11 weeks -- I'm O blood type and have already LOST 32lbs!!!! I no longer have chest pains-- my blood pressure is back to norm/low without medication, I have more energy & feel better that ever! I think it's a very easy diet to follow...I just cut out the glutin/dairy & coffee.... and, stick with eliminating the things on the 'Avoid list" as closely as possible...I try to eat at least 5 of the foods listed on the highly beneficial list every day... and, the rest is easy. Hey, I can still drink red wine & eat chocolate! What could be better than that?? Plus, I forgot to mention that this weight loss was with virtually NO exercise... I had knee surgery in December & have just gotten clearance from my doctor & physical therapist that I can begin a regular exercise program again. This book was the miracle I was looking for! I tried this diet 6 years ago and I lost weight and felt better. I am type 0. Type O's cannot have wheat so I could not stay on the diet. I am trying this diet again because I have fibromyalgia and I am in constant pain. It has been two weeks and the decrease in pain is dramatic. I found recipes for making breakfast bars and deserts with rice flour and they are delicious. With that as a back-up, it is now easy for me to follow the diet. I feel so much better that I am very motivated to stay on this diet.

Not thrilled with the book at all. After trying to follow my blood type O section for almost a year, I have come to realize I can't follow it.
I have been sick for 2 1/2 years now and 6 Doctors later couldn't understand why I was trying to get well by following the suggestions in this book & every single one of them stated I had irritable bowl syndrome. Doctor #7 then tells me that I have Celiac Disease (after all his testings were done) & most of the stuff I was eating was not good for my problem any way and that's why I was not getting better, Go Figure. Now a days sticking to a Gluten Free regimen is not what I would call the best in the world but I can walk straight up now have a new outlook on life now and I can enjoy being alive again and pain free. I hope this helps someone. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-14 19:40:05 EST)

Eat Right 4 Your Type divides us by our blood type and ancestry. After reading Dr. D'Adamo's prescribed diet for my blood type, I realized it coincided with the types of foods I already knew made me feel better. I believe this book has been a great seller for many years because the work is interesting and provocative and people find they feel better emphasizing and limiting the foods prescribed or proscribed in the different diets. I definitely feel better following the general prescriptions for my blood type. The book has become a much-referred-to and referenced classic. I think it is worth reading along with Dr. D'Adamo's new book The GenoType Diet, which separates us into six separate genetic types - Hunter, Gatherer, Teacher, Explorer, Warrior, and Nomad. I also enthusiastically recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams

Like Atkins, this book is a revolutionary trend setter. The author recognizes our differences in heritage and blood type and then makes appropriate diet and exercise recommendations. The premise is interesting and makes sense on an intuitive level since blood type is such a fundamental physiological distinction. The author explains that people with each blood type process food and fight disease and stress differently and therefore thrive on different diets. For example, Type O's should eat more protein, less grains, and do aerobic exercise, Type A's should eat vegetarian, exercise less vigorously, and meditate, Type B's should eat a diverse diet, and exercise moderately, and Type AB's are an amalgamation of As and Bs and should do relaxation exercises. It is an interesting and worthwhile read. I also highly recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams.

Two people I work with have taken the information in this book and put it to use. Both have lost weight and claim to feel much better. Which is why I decided to buy and read it.
The premise seems plausible, but there is no data supporting the conclusions save the author's statement that he has done a particular test on a number of people and found it supports his premise. But nowhere does he explain how he even met the basic principles of scientific research. Book has been around a long time, so it must fill a need gap somewhere. My blood type is AB+, supposedly the "newest" blood type to appear which combines both the good and bad of types A & B. However, in one individual a good characteristic of A may be a bad characteristic in another. The author points out, correctly, that only 5% of the world's population is AB. Not knowing what the population size of his test subject's are/were, it still seems very unlikely he could have tested a significant number of AB's to draw any meaningful conclusions. Indeed, the chapter treating this blood type rambles. As a diabetic, I found his information on controlling this disease relative to blood type to be counter to some American Diabetes Association accepted practices. I am not about to jepordize my health care on such little evidence. Just glancing through the various "diets", there didn't seem to be much difference in them & I didn't think the information was valid enough to spend my time comparing them in detail. Curious about new slants and thoughts, read on; looking for a tried and true diet, look elsewhere. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-24 18:57:39 EST)

This book has changed my life. I am no longer experiencing the severe digestion problems that I was experiencing prior to reading this book. Easy-to-follow format and well-organized. Clear explanations that are accessible to a layperson, not in the health/nutrition field.

Cicero once said: "In nothing do men approach so nearly to the Gods, as in giving health to men."
Virgil said: "The greatest wealth is health." So many of us take our health for granted. It's truly THE MOST IMPORTANT asset each of us have. I am posting this review to not only share my favorite, most important health books of 2007... but more important, to hopefully convince just one person to read a book that might strengthen their health and maybe help them live a little longer and a little healthier. My Most Important Health Books of the Year... * You: Staying Young - Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen hit a home run with this book. The advice is sound and the nutritional recommendations are cutting edge, presenting the latest research on nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and cayenne. This book may very well help rejuvenate your health and allow you to drop the extra pounds and possibly protect, and even reverse, certain ailments such as diabetes, high cholesterol, arthritis, and others. * The Natural Bird Flu Cure They Don't Want You to Know About - The deadly bird flu is spreading like wildfire across Asia, and it's only a matter of time before it hits the U.S. The CDC and government officials have said as much. Unfortunately, we don't hear a lot about the bird flu in the U.S. anymore because of the media's preoccupation with O.J. and Britney Spears. This book reveals a possible natural cure to the deadly bird flu supported by 2 Nobel Prize-winning chemists. *You: On A Diet - Another book by Drs. Oz and Roizen. While I do not like the word "diet" (it conjures images of strict calorie cutting, sacrifice, and, well, torture), this book does share a wonderful plan for finally and forever dropping those extra pounds. Let's face it, the majority of illness and ill health in America today is food related. This really is an important, worthwhile book, despite its somewhat gimmicky title. I found this book to be a very easy read. It gives very simple straight forward explanations and rationale for the diet and it's theories. It further reads like an instruction manual and very clearly explains what foods are beneficial, neutral, or an avoid. Pretty straight forward, if it's beneficial eat it, if it's an avoid, avoid it. And if it's a neutral it has little significance either way, so you can eat it but don't make it a diet staple.

I have followed the guidelines in this book loosely for 2 weeks and have lost over 8 pounds. Which is a 20% of the weight I want to lose by December. I am type O which is the best type to be on this diet because it allows for a larger range of foods. Type O's should definately try this diet, and its not hard to follow. The Other blood types should try this as well, but food options are more restricted. So if you have a hard time avoiding certain foods this may not be for you.

In John Robbins new book, "Healthy At 100", he studies the Abkhasians of the Caucasus Mountains, the Vilcabambans of Ecuador and the Hunzans of Pakistan. These are probably the three healthiest populations in the world. None of them prepare special foods for different people of different blood types. Yet they are almost universally healthy and happy.
Weston Price traveled the world back in the 1930s and examined the healthiest tribes of people to be found. None of them prepared different foods for people of different blood types. To the best of my knowledge, there has never been a single scientific study demonstrating that people of different blood types have different nutritional needs. Blood type diets are nothing more than silly mumbo-jumbo. Why do people embrace this kind of dietary cult? I'm not sure. Maybe because people feel a need to be segmented and divided in some way. This is MY special blood type diet! I eat this and you shouldn't. Maybe people embrace this stuff because it helps rationalize decisions that they have already made. This is a GREAT book. It is not some fad diet, but gives scientific information to use in your everyday food choices. This was recommended to me by a co-worker that lives by this book. If you like science or history this will be a good book for you.

There is no reasonable scientific basis for the claim that blood type has anything to do with one's proper diet. D'Adamo has never done a controlled study on blood type diets. His assertions are almost completely anecdotal.

This is a four in one book that covers the four blood types. The companion smaller books for each blood type are small in size large in content and great to take along with you when you go food shopping. A lot of the foods I like, don't like me according to this book and I agree with 93% of this point of view. This book and this serie of books are a fast read and another good reference for you to consider while building your life time diet plan.

I was introduced to the blood type book 8 years ago. The idea that food causes an immune response made perfect sense to me, further studies in college reinforced all the ideas presented in this book.
The diet is very specific but over the years I have found that some "avoid" foods are more reactive than others, for me personally. Over time I paid attention to how I felt after eating certain foods. If a food made me feel bad or gave me a runny nose, sore throat or mucousy cough I would look to Eat Right 4 Your Type and invariably, it was on my avoid list. While the diet seems very restrictive, just keep it in mind when you eat and then feel bad. Eating should not make you tired or give you indigestion. Food is supposed to give you energy! The more closely I stick to the diet, the better I feel. People who feel bad all the time forget how it feels to be normal. I encourage everyone to test out some of the ideas in this book, perhaps it will help you resolve non-specific symptoms you are experiencing (and may not even realize it!) this book is one of the best books I have read for information on dieting.
It has made me realize a lot about myself because of my blood type. I have shared it with my co-workers, they are also impressed with the info in this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-07 11:02:52 EST)

If you buy into the possibilities, it can be beneficial. Both my husband and I have felt better since trying to follow this. I can't say any real weight loss, but definitely feel much better!
