In the growing world of NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., is a new kind of star. His down-home modesty, rock-and-roll lifestyle, and blinding intensity on the racetrack represent the new face of this fast-paced sport. Now Dale Jr. straps you into the #8 car for a wild ride through his rookie year.In this full-throttle story, Dale Jr. shares a tumultuous year of victory and joy, tragedy and heartbreak. At the age of twenty-five, he embarks on his first Winston Cup season. In a time filled with lofty expectations, when he tries to concentrate on winning, he is thrust into the limelight and forced to endure the crush of the media, huge crowds, endless travel, and faster and more dangerous cars than he has ever driven before. Week after week he goes bumper-to-bumper with his father and more than forty of the world's finest drivers-all the while trying to carve out his own identity and win the respect of his peers.DRIVER #8 takes you on NASCAR's inside track. You'll see how races are won or lost and the strategies that go into every lap and every race. You'll get a compelling look at the bond necessary between a driver and his team and understand how, come race day, the spotter is often the driver's best friend. And you'll learn how that bond can be stretched when the season begins to turn sour and the weight of racing against a man who is not only your father but also your boss, your toughest competitor, and a NASCAR legend takes its toll on a young driver.Powered by a high-octane mix of bravado, humility, and a lot of beer, Dale Jr. captures the unique pressures of making split-second, life-and-death decisions behind the wheel of a racecar...and highlights the perks-and often the drudgery-that go along with being a rising star in the world's most colorful and exciting sport. Thrilling, vivid, and authentic, DRIVER #8 is one helluva ride.

This book was great. I enjoyed the descriptions of all of the tracks that Jr. raced at and how he talked to his dad and Matt Kenseth about things that were happening at any one moment. I also enjoyed hearing how him and Tony Jr. have such an honest relationship. They may yell at each other during a race on the radio, but after the race is over they are able to go back to being cousins/friends again. They leave it all on the racetrack. Very well written book! A must for any Jr. fan!

I really enjoyed reading about his experience as a driver. It is well written and not boring. Which it could have been since it is always hard to write about work. I loved watching his father race and now I get to watch him.

The book is a look at the first year of his career.... however, I will admit the authors seem to exagerrate the excitement of his year. The book would be a little better if you felt it was entirely realistic. However, that put aside it's a neat look at the first year of a NASCAr career.

Driver #8 was a very very good and insightful book. With Dale explaining every race of his rookie year it really lets you get a good feeling about what nascar is really like. This book is one of the best books i have every read that has to do with racing. The book is very fast paced and easy to get started and know exactly what is going on. In my mind i give a big 5 stars.

this book was unbelievably great. two thumbs up. I started to read it and couldnt put the book down. it seemed like I was in the pits with JR. I couldnt stop reading no matter what. I always wanted to know what went on in the pits and now i know how they did things. i figured that all the drivers were all rivals but for the most part they are all pretty good friends.

This is a really good book Dale Earnhardt and some other people wrote it, but he wrote most of it. Dale is a race car driver. It is about all the Nascar drivers. This is an autobigraghy. There were lots of people that read it. My mom likes the book a lot. It explains what goes on in his life and with his enemy Jeff Gorden, number 24. I read this book two times; it is really good. I recommend this book to people who like Nascar.

I really enjoyed this book. It is written in Dale, Jr's own words and his down to earth, good ol boy charm is not lost on paper. Each chapter is based on each race week-end throughout the season, which gives you some insight to what goes on "behind the scenes" at the track. The stories have everything; excitement, humor (you'll laugh out loud alot) and tears. I even bought this book for my father, who is not a Junior fan, but I knew would still enjoy the book! If your a Nascar fan, you'll like this book! If your a Junior fan (and how could you not LOVE this guy!) you will love this book! I hope he does another soon!

This book is written in the first person, and it's sort of a diary of Dale Earnhardt Jr's 2000 Winston Cup season. It's funny, articulate, thoughtful and informative. I was really surprised at how well written it was. I know Jade Gurss helped write the book, but it really came out sounding authentic and true to how Junior presents himself. I highly recommend this for the diehard NASCAR fan as well as the novice...and watch out for motorized barstools. You'll see what I mean...

This book is a great read, regardless of whether you're a Junior fan or not. It shows what a typical rookie year is like in the world of Nascar. It's funny, true to life, and is written as if Junior, himself, is telling you the story. Great book, must have!

This book is one of the best I have ever read. It is definitely a must read for any NASCAR fan, especially one that is a fan of Dale Earnhardt, Jr. This book is extremely captivating, and I completed it in two days. There is not a bad spot in the book, although he does tend to focus on Bud Girls...there are hilarious moments in this novel, one of them being the 2000 Winston and it's tale about a man dressed as a giant Oreo. Although it was penned by Jade Gurss, you can tell that the stories are entirely Dale Jr.'s, and his personality comes shining through. You feel closer to him somehow after the completion of this book. Dale manages to use colorful language to his advantage; it's an easy read, but definitely makes you think. The photo inserts in the middle are a great addition, as is the epilogue covering the events of 2001 and how he coped with his father's death. He is very candid about everything, and it's refreshing. Overall: it's just a great, great book and can definitely be reread numerous times.

How his first season had ups and downs and wins and loses. And the tradgety that happen in 2001 at Daytona is in the Epilogue. This book uses some very strong language. Its a must read for all fans!

Driver # 8 is a biography of the racing life of Dale Earnhardt Jr. It summarizes the rookie year of his career in 2000. Each chapter is another race and another struggle that Dale had to face. In the book Dale gets off to a good start placing thirteenth in the Daytona 500 the biggest race of the year. Out of the rookies in that race he placed 2nd overall finishing behind the other rookie Matt Kenseth who finished 9th. He goes through many frustrating races by having bad racecars or crashing. There are times in the book were it seems like it can't get any worse than it possibly is. But then he finally gets that thing he needs. He wins his first race as a Winston Cup competitor. It came at Fort Worth, Texas. The way he describes the victory is amazing. He says there is no greater feeling in the world. But with this victory he stills trails Matt Kensenth in rookie points. Can he surpass Matt for the rookie point lead?
I think people of many ages will enjoy reading this book. Especially those that are Dale Earnhardt Jr. fans. It is emotionally exciting and fun to read. I would not recommend this book to other race fans such as Gordon fans or Johnson fans. I don't think that people not interested in the sport would like this book. Those who would like to learn the sport better should read this book. This book helps you to understand the sport of racing a lot better. I think this is a really great book and I enjoyed reading it. This book had me laughing all throghout the book and had me crying at the end. It was very informative and written to where people who do not undestand the technical aspects of racing could still understand what they were talking about. Also gave an insiders view on what it's like to be famous in NASCAR racing and have all that pressure but if foul language offens you you should pass on this book but if not then great b/c this is a great book.

This book is a must if you're a NASCAR fan! Dale Jr. writes about his 2000 rookie season, his lifestyle and, of course, girls. There is parts of the book where you laugh your head off and parts where you wonder what in the world is going through his mind. He talks about his father which is very sweet. When his father tells him something or advice, you can read it going through Jr.'s ear and out the other and later he relizes he should of listen to his father. I finished this book within a week and I enjoyed it alot!

Driver #8 is a very great book. This biography is said by Cale Earnhardt Jr., but written by Jade Gurss, his publicist. Warner Books published it in 2002. This book shows you how hard everyone has to work to win a race. It also shows you that you shouldn't give up. If Dale had given up when he had a few bad races he would not be racing today.
It is about Ralph Dale Earnhardt Jr. during his rookie year. He tries to win any race so he can win Rookie of the Year. He works hard with his team. He won 3 races and got second in Rookie of the Year. This book is so many things. It is entertaining and memorable. It is one of my favorte types of books to read. Until you finish the chapter you can't put it down, but you can read each chapter at a time so you can do other things too. The book keeps you entertained. You feel like your right there walking or racing with him. You also remember some of the high points and the low points. The most memorable part of the book to me is the Epilogu. Anybody who watches NASCR knows what happened in 2001. Jr.'s father Dale Earnhardt Sr. died in a car accident in Daytona. Jr. told a reporter that he had a dream that he had led most of the race at Daytona and won. The reporter asked if his dad was there and he said, "He wasn't, or was he?" It just kind of sticks in your mind. It's right at the end of the book too, so it's the last thing you read. This i sone of those books were yo say that was the best thing and other times you wonder if it's the same people making the decisions because they make a terrible decision. The place where you think about this most is when they are deciding wht to do for a pit stop. Sometimes they would take 2 tires instead of 4 and you knew it would cost them. In the end it did. Then someimes you and the crew had to be on the same wavelength because you could guess what was best. This book helps you understand the challenges of a rookie race season. It shows you that when you are the rookie you have it harder then everybody. Not only have you never raced on tracks but you also don't have the respect of the other drivers. This hurts you especially at races where you use restictor plates because you have to use the draft to gain points. This book helps you understand racing much better. Driver #8 is one of the best books I have read. It takes you into the mind of a driver at the track and where ever he goes during the year. I woul drecommend this book to any Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan. If you like Gordon or anybody like tha I ould not recommend this book because you probably wouldn't like it. If you're a race fan and don't really have a favorite this would be a good book to read. If you don't like racing I recommend not reading it but if you want to learn a little you could. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-20 04:36:14 EST)

Powered by pure adrenaline, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. goes through the highs and lows of being a rising star in Nascar Winston Cup. This amazing story travels through the up and downs of Dale's rookie season, which tood place in 2000. Jr. started racing at a local track with only one car and didn't get very far. He then got an opportunity to join the Nascar Busch Sersies, (just a step down from Winston Cup) where he won 2 championships, before entering the cup series. Jr. was born into racing, his father was a 7 time Winston Cup champion and a legand aroung many and all racing circuits. Unfortunately his life was cut short when he crashed and hit the wall, on the last lap of the Daytona 500, on February 18, 2001, at the Daytona International Speedway. For Jr. it was a bad start of his second raving season in Winston cup. But he then came back in July of 2001 and won the Pepsi 400 at the same track his father had lost his life. Jr. has been in the lowest and highest in his life and this book lets you see only a small year of what Dale Earnhardt Jr. has evperienced in his 28 years on this earth.
I loved this book and it is a pure adventure for anyone who is into Nascar or any other type of motorsports. It gives the reader and insight of what it is like to live the life of a Nascar Winston Cup Star. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-20 04:36:15 EST)

I have to say that after I'd finished this book I was wondering if maybe his sister Kelley didn't write it... "Operation Flowerbed" and kittens... what's that doing in a book about a Rookie Season in WC?
I've only been a NWC fan for 4 years, and am still learning about racing, this book helped, lots. What a great insight into 'a day in the life of the WC driver'. It's a great read, and if you're not a Jr. fan, by the end of this book, you'll sure have a lot of respect for the guy. Get it! Read It! It's an entertaining read worth re-reading over and over. PS: If you're trying to decide if you should or shouldn't buy the book, I'd pay the cover price just to read the Epilogue. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-20 04:36:15 EST)

I felt that this book gave a lot of insight into what really happens in the life of a Nascar driver. I learned some things about racing that I didn't know. I feel like I got to know a little more about Dale, Jr. the person than just Dale,Jr. the driver. Once the book started moving from track to track, I couldn't wait to see what comments were coming next. Reading the good and not so good things about each track was very interesting. I would recommend this book to just about anyone who just likes auto racing of any kind.

Amazing. Simply the best book I've ever read. I may be bias because Junior is my favorite driver... but I think this book is fantastic. It takes you into his life- his real life. Hes not afraid to hold back, and thats what makes the book-and him- so great. One of the best parts is when in one paragraph his mouthing off to someone or swearing at something and then in the next he tells about going and buying a kitten and how he just had to have it. If you are a NASCAR fan- get it. If you are a Junior fan.... get it sooner! #8 in 2003 baby!

I am a big fan of NASCAR but not so much of a fan of DJ. This book gives you a great look at the life of a NASCAR driver outside the race track and how many obligations they have from sponsors. It reminds you of how much tradgedy happened while this book was written.

I'm a big Dale Jr fan & I just had to get this book to read. The book tells about his rookie season in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in 2000. The book talks about what he would do on race weekends before the race tells & what was going on during the race and he (Dale Jr) talks about his father a lot in the book. I have read this book 2 times and I have to say that Dale Jr and his PR person are both AWESOME! writers. This book is just AWESOME! Every Dale Jr fan needs to go out and buy this book and read it 1 or 2 times.

As a NASCAR fan, I picked the book up because I like reading bios of my favorite athletes. But this is a story of a rookie in Winston Cup, told by Dale himself. The writing is very personal, he's not afraid to curse or say he wasn't upset when the Bud Girls "forgot" to wear bras to a photo shoot. It's the perfect book to read to get inside the season of one of the most popular drivers in Cup!

I became a fan of NASCAR during the 2001 season. My dad was always a fan and I'd watch some of the races a few years ago with him. I decided at that time that I liked Jeff Gordon because I thought he was "cute". When I began watching the races more seriously, I started liking Dale Jr. (I also think he is a "hottie"!) After reading his book I am now a devoted Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan. His book was great! I felt like he was talking to me. The way he told his stories and the language that he used, you could almost hear him. I learned a lot about him as a driver and as a person. I also learned a lot more about NASCAR racing and what the teams go through week after week. It is truly a team sport. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys NASCAR.

Driver # 8 is simply one of the best books I have read in a long time. This book is not a biography. It is about Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s rookie season in the Nascar Winston Cup Series.
Dale Jr. proves that he is as good of a writer, as he is a driver. There are several moments in this book that will make you laugh out loud. This book is good for the new Nascar fan, as well as the long timers, as it provides a fascinating look into an entire season of the Winston Cup Series. Dale often talks about the highs and lows that the teams go through. He also explains several things about the cars in layman terms so that the non fan can understand it. Overall, as a long time Nascar fan, I got a lot of enjoyment out of this book, and I believe you will too. Highly Recommended!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-20 04:36:17 EST)

I bought this book for my husband and he just loved it. What a great story about his rookie year. It was great fun to read. Jr shows his wit, candor and honesty. He tells it like it is. It is a view behind the scenes of NASCAR. He explains what it's like to be a driver in the greatest sport and a son of a racing legend.

I was always a Wallace fan until recently....
Dale Jr proved with this book he is not only an incredible driver but he is intelligent. He talks and holds high regards for his family, friends and racing fans. That means a lot to a Nascar fan. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-20 04:36:17 EST)

An intense look into the life of a young race car driver's rookie season. Ups and downs, wins and losses and how each outcome is handled by this "young" man. An amazing "ride along" with the driver, race by race. I have a different outlook regarding drivers, pit crews and all involved in the racing business since reading this book. I really loved the kinship between all the teams. I don't think you find that type of friendship in other sports. It's a "must read" for all Nascar fans!

I'm a "Driver #20" fan, but this book by Junior is simply wonderful. Oh, it's not all that deep, but it tells a great story. His first person accounts of the races from his in-car perspective are really interesting and book really moves along fast - I think I got through the whole thing in a single weekend.
The neatest thing about it is that Junior's personality really comes through here in his writing style. If you've ever seen him interviewed on TV, you will perceive the same attitude (sort of a big swagger tempered by a lot of neophyte humbleness) here in print. I think that is pretty remarkable - this book is truly is told in the first person and you will feel as if you actually spent the 2000 Winston Cup year as a part of Junior's entourage when he's writing about events off the track, and you'll feel like you're "Wilson" when he's writing about the racing on the track. This is a super book - and it's not just for Nascar fans. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-20 04:36:17 EST)

My 9 year old son asked for this book for Easter. He races karts and Little E is his favorite Nascar driver. We have the same paint scheme as the Bud car on the kart!! Easter was less than 1 month ago and he has already finished reading the book and loved everything about it. This is excellent in the eyes of a parent to have a child of this age read a book of this length in this period of time. He has learned alot about Earnhardt reading the book and has shared the information with us on many occasions. He has greatly enjoyed it and will be disappointed that he has reached the end and not have Driver #8 to read tomorrow!

This is a wonderful read for all NASCAR fans even if you are not a Dale Jr. fan. I was glad to find that Dale Jr. divulged emotions regarding the death of Dale Sr. appropriately and respectfully while conserving the privacy that he and all NASCAR drivers fight daily to preserve. As a twentysomething NASCAR fan I naturally related to his new millenium attitude and approach to the industry, his career, and often complicated issues such as media infringement, sponsor committments and unstable fans. Additionally, this book provides the reader with fantastic play by play descriptions of the races along the NASCAR circuit of his Rookie season with driver oriented explanations of various technical issues of the cars and tracks.
Overall, I rated this book 5 stars for its easy readability and attention keeping entertainment factor. By the end of this book you'll be ready to invite this guy over for a cold Bud! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-06-20 04:36:20 EST)
