Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone."
Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus. |

I have done this diet a few times beside being a VERY EXPENSIVE diet, to buy food for, it does not work for more than a few weeks, look around you many lose weight but they cannot keep it off it kreeps back on...here is a much better and cheaper eating diet..if you are ready to commit 6 weeks to a total makeover try Dr. Fuhrmans book, "Eat for health" I have lost 40 pounds in just over 2 months on this diet, yes i have alot of weight to lose but this is a much safer diet based on eating unlimited whole fruits, beans, lentils, and veggies cooked or raw and some whole wheat pasta but breads are limited ...energy level is great...I cannot thank Joel Fuhrman for a more healthy diet...

In 1998, my company at the time asked me to meet Dr Atkins with a view toward a business deal we were contemplating with him. He was so unhealthy in appearance (palid, exhausted) that I told my boss "Don't do a deal with this guy, I think he's going to die soon." Since then, I've done more research into the science behind low-carb/high-protein. The fact is most Americans already get enough protein in their diets. They also get too many carbs, but that's from overeating and over-indulgence in highly processed foods... not because carbs are inherently bad. Moderation on all fronts is the only diet that works. Eating mostly meat is going to work as well as the Banana Diet did, you'll lose weight at first but then get sick and ultimately gain it back.

I know it sounds too good to be true, but I started this way of eating (WOE) on 07/22/08 and from day one my blood sugar never went over 110. It had previously been between 150-250 (even while taking 4 insulin shots a day and 2000 mg of Metformin). I have lost almost 40 lbs in 3 months and have never been healthier. If you have the will, this will be a life changer for you.

I purchased this book because I wanted to see what, if anything, Dr. Atkins had changed from the earlier edition(s) and this editions provides more insight and just tells it like it when you need to change your eating habits and the possible reasons an individual has a weight problem. I am now down 25 lbs and having a great time trying recipes and getting into clothes I haven't worn in a while.

I will put this very simply. I had tried many other diets that only worked while I was on them. Dr. Atkins' diet taught me how to eat healthy, feel full, and after I lost the weight I wanted I was able to maintain my weight by continuing to eat most healthful foods. He also explained why his diet works and what to look for in the foods we eat. I would also like to point out that I started an exercise program of walking 1 mile 5 days a week when I could and going to a gym 2 days a week for 30 minutes. I went to Curves for women but any program would work. It is much easier to keep off the weight and feel good by continuing to eat heathy using this book and excersing at the same time. That is the purpose of a diet - helping you to make healthy lifestyle changes, and this diet did it for me.

Within the first day on this diet I was so dizzy I couldn't stand up without assistance. I thought maybe it was a fluke and I had the flu, so I tried again a few months later. The same thing happened. I was so dizzy and pukey feeling it was unbearable! Someone recommended to me to start out with more carbs. So I started with over twice the amount of carbs atkins says to start out on and I was so dizzy and sick again I couldn't get out of bed. I had my husband bring me a piece of fruit, which I ate, then I laid and bed and the feeling went away after 20 minutes. Obviously this diet isn't for everyone. It can't be everyone who feels this way or they wouldn't have been able to sell so many copies of this book, right?

I have tried Jenny Craig and Nutrisystems and this is the easiest and quickest way to lose weight. The first two weeks were tough but I was encouraged when I saw that I was losing about one pound a day. It has now been seven weeks and I have lost 13 lbs. I need to lose about 15 lbs. to reach my target. I am always surprised to get on the scale and find that I have lost more weight since I never feel hungry. It is very practical b/c you can eat anywhere which has always been a problem for me on other diets. I love this diet and wish that I could have found it years ago. I would have saved a lot of money and learned how to control my weight before it got out of control.
My only word of caution about consuming low or no carbs (I never did the no carbs) is to take the recommended supplements. I did not take them at first and had terrible foot and leg cramps during the night. Taking calcium and potassium cured that problem and vitamin B helped with the initial feeling of weakness. I highly recommend this diet to anyone who wants to lose weight quickly and easily. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-23 07:33:58 EST)

Is there anyone who has had such a positive impact on American's ability to lose weight as Dr. Atkins? The science has, in fact, caught up with Atkins' assertions that sugar and excess carbohydrates are deadly. For a person who wants to know if they should take this book seriously, simply read through the success stories and testimonials here on Amazon! They really say it all. If we want to shorten our lives and make our final years miserable, a good way is to smoke, eat sugar, and be overweight. I think this book is worth reading. Stay away from red meat and processed meats, though, as they have been shown to cause colon cancer. Great companion books are THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams and 2007 Second Expert Report, Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective.

I recommend this book to anyone who is planning to do Atkins. Take the time to sit down and read the book before you start the plan. Once your read the first 150 pages you are pretty good to go. When you follow the plan of Induction the first two weeks can be a challenge but it is so worth it. I have been on the plan know for 3 weeks and have lost 13 lbs. I have tried for years to loose weight and I am so happy that my sister inlaw told me about this. I feel so much better. I have more energy, I have less physical pain, and I eat better than I use to.

Atkins may be ok for some people but I have talked to a lot of people who have had ill effects from this diet, me being one of them.
I was on the diet for 7 days doing the induction phase. For 4 days prior I had difficulty sleeping, muscle cramps and disturbances in my vision. I also suffered from heart palpatations. Something I had never experienced before. And then came the headaches. I am not prone to headaches and had not had one in I don't know how long, but for three days straight on this diet I had headaches. On day seven I woke up groggy and "foggy brained" this is all supposed to be a so called normal reaction to the diet while you are weening yourself off of carbohydrates and transforming your body into a fat burning machine. I was ill the entire day and could not get up the energy to do anything. I started having other problems too. I decided then and there I was going off this diet. I went to the store and got some whole grain bread and ate it with a salad. Within two hours the fogginess was gone, headache was gone and I felt better. I don't care what anyone says, this diet is dangerous for some people. If you do the diet and start feeling ill you should stop it right away. Personally I wouldn't even go on it in the first place. There are no long term studies on this diet and it is frightening to think of what you could be doing to you body. When you stop to think about it how normal is it to say eat all the fat, cheese, meat, butter you want but cut down on the vegetables. I know...I know...when you move up the phases in the Atkins diet you get more vegetables, nuts, dairy, etc. But what damage are you doing to your body in the meantime? I would think a lot before starting this diet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-27 01:04:07 EST)

I had always heard mixed reviews of Dr. Atkins' diet plan. Well, after reading this book and deciding to give it a try, I am healthier than I have been in years. The book does a nice job explaining the science behind the diet, explaining the steps to successful short-term and long-term diet, and has some great recipes.

I lost all of the weight I needed to on this diet-and then some! It is a healthy diet. You do eat veggies, even fruit eventually. I think that people should educate themselves before saying negative things about anything! If you don't want to eat like this, okay. Don't. Your life is your own. But hey, the diet does work for those interested. ;-)

I am the author of a new book entitled GENOCIDE;HOW YOUR DOCTOR'S DIETARY IGNORANCE WILL KILL YOU. I am a family physician with over ten years experience introducing a low carbohydrate, more fat, more cholesterol, more protein diet into my patient's lives. Through this dietary approach I have cured type 2 diabetics, treated people with high blood pressure with little or no need for meds, seen tons of weight lost and the list goes on and on.
Atkin's book is easily one of the best books ever written on low carb dieting. The three books I recommend my patients read are Atkins, Protein Power, and of course my own :-) Unfortunately most physicians will never read this book and if they do they will dismiss it as an opinion, not based in fact. For some reason, the scientific method is not followed in dietary clinical trials. The scientific method should be: I have an idea (theory, supposition, opinion, hypothesis whatever you want to call it), I perform an experiment to either prove or disprove my idea; if I prove my theory-great-look how smart I am. But if the results do not prove my idea, I am supposed to re-evaluate my initial idea, not call the experiment flawed or the results inconclusive. The reason the dietary clinical trials appear contradictory is because the researchers in these trials start off with a conclusion--not an idea-- perform an experiment, and when the results of the experiment do not support what the researchers already 'think' they know; they now call the experimental design flawed or the results inconclusive, which is generally not the case. I have literally treated thousands upon thousands of my patients with low carb diets over the last decade. I love when the labs come back with higher HDLs, lower triglycerides and normal blood sugars. I love teasing my patients and ask if they are eating more fat and cholesterol. When they say yes, I ask them "Well, if you are eating more fat and cholesterol, then why did your fat level drop and why did your HDL rise, and why did you lose weight?" I always get a smile back, because my patients know what I am getting at. And what I'm getting at is the fact--and I mean FACT, that low cholesterol, low fat diets DO NOT WORK to any degree to help people stay off or reduce their medications. This book should be required reading in all medical and undergraduate colleges. If physicians actually understood the correct way to tell their patients to eat--many disease processes would become extinct--instead of the human race. Allow me to end my post with the three biggest dietary myths in America; MYTH # 1 Eating fat makes us fat. FALSE. The truth is that eating fat does not make us fat, unless we're eating too many carbohydrates along with that fat. MYTH #2 Eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease. FALSE. There has never been any study which has shown, convincingly, that eating cholesterol containing foods causes heart disease. MYTH #3 Probably the biggest dietary myth out there is that the calorie actually means something in human nutrition. FALSE. The calorie means nothing in human nutrition. Atkins was a true pioneer in the correct way to eat. Genocide: How Your Doctor's Dietary Ignorance Will Kill You!!!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-03 06:40:04 EST)

Atkin's was a very observant and intelligent doctor. He has an incredible voice in his prose, full of confidence and knowledge. I've tried several diets, and while I can lose some weight on all of them, Atkins is the easiest for me. Under weightwatchers I am always on the edge of hunger and I don't lose that much weight - even religiously following the guidelines, and I find the diet not that satisfying.
Under atkins' diet I am not hungry most of the time and I find the diet very satisfying and fulfilling, I can make a lifestyle change. Of course, it would be better if it didn't have so many animal fats in it, but it's better to lose weight eating fat than not to lose weight. I plan to slowly cut down the fat content as I lose weight to make it a more healthy long term diet. He has great references, the one thing that gets boring for me is too many individual stories about how some person has done great on his diet. I'd rather see more long term, large participation studies in the book (but I know not that many have been done.) The main point of the book is that you aren't wht you eat, but you are what you eat turns into inside your body - and what the food in your body does is not intuitive and a bit surprising. For instance, it used to be recommended that you shouldn't eat cholestrol (eggs, for instance) as it could increase your cholesterol levels, however, the effect is so small as to be almost unmeasurable, there are other things in your diet that have much more effect over cholesterol levels than the amount of cholesterol you eat. Likewise, the amount of fat you have is not directly related to the amount of fat you eat. It turns out that fat on your body comes from high levels of sugars in your food which the body quickly digests and stores the excess immdiately into fat as your blood sugar rises, thus more sugar (carbohydrates) equals more fat. The body then quckly goes to low blood sugar, which causes you to be hungry and to eat more sugar, causing your weight to quickly spiral out of control. Why is this? Because for millions of years the human body has evolved in an environment that had no manufactured food! We ate vegetables, meat, fruit when in season, nuts, and that's about it. Until the last 10,000 years (which have only made minor changes in our genome) we never had the opportunity to consume refined grains and sugars or concentrated alcohol. All of these things are more efficient in $$/calorie, but screw up the body's naturally evolved caloric intake system. Dr. Atkins understood this and has designed a diet to take this into account. It turns out that fat takes longer to digest (as does fiber with carbohydrates) so that as the claories from these types of food are digested in your blood stream, the blood sugar level is raised so slowly that the excess is burned, not turned into stored fat; in fact, the body starts to burn the stored fat to even out this gently changing blood sugar level due to calorie intake - this diet really does burn fat. I can say that for me it really works. I eat until I'm full, when I'm hungry I can snack on food that I like and I feel satisfied and I get down to my ideal weight. Now, long term I plan on eating less meat and more vegetables, but getting the weight off first is key. The best thing about this diet is that you lose body fat faster than you lose weight, and excess internal body fat is linked to all sorts of bad health things - like diabetes (type 2), higher blood pressure, hardening of the arteries and heart attacks. This is a great diet, especially if you have plateaued on other diets and need that extra something to get you through. I reccommend it over fat restriction diets any day. Now, my wife does not do as well on this diet, so it's not for everyone, but for my metabolism, this is a great way to eat and stay healthy. The book itself is extremely well done, diets planned for the first few weeks (every meal.) Tables of carbohydrates per food type, glycemic levels, recommendations for how to eat and how much exercise you should be doing. Solutions to problems on the diet and how to correct them, recommendations for suplements with reasons and explanations that can help you figure out what you really need. It's well laid out and easy to use and a fascinating read. It's a great book and a great tool to help you lose body fat and get to your ideal long term weight goal. No diet is right for everyone all of the time.
However, despite many misunderstandings and myths, this diet can help some people A LOT. Don't be afraid to try this diet, but make sure you read the whole book carefully first and do research by reading about other low-carb diets and low-carb websites. The most important contribution of this book is that it can encourage people to experiment with all foods to find the diet that best fits them at the time. The fact that Dr. Atkins challenged the mainstream dietary advice helped open the door for people that need high-fat and/or high-animal-protein and/or low-carb diets at any phase in their lives. This diet may or may not be right for you, but do some research to find out, because for some people it can be great. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-17 10:57:30 EST)

Let me qualify this by saying - this is ABSOLUTELY the lifestyle change I needed, because I am insulin resistant and pre-diabetic. I can see, however, where some people couldn't hang with this diet. We're all on a sliding scale of how many carbohydrates we need each day. Some people need a lot, some very little. That is why I say, Dr. Atkins is a lifesaver for those of us who tried to comply with the Food Pyramid that the FDA blessed, and then the low-fat craze comes along and we're even more screwed. I was always wondering why I would eat very little, and obey that Food Pyramid to the T, and STILL be gaining weight!!!! Finally, I stumbled upon Dr. Atkins, and his enlightening work. I have lost 30 pounds so far simply from following this "diet", and my cholesterol levels have returned to normal. I no longer have the constant stomachaches, the bloating, and the extreme fatigue and constant hunger that I had on the typical American diet. So thank God for Dr. Atkins - may he rest in peace.
That being said, I realize that there are different people from me who don't need this Atkins diet. They are fine with the diet they are following now! I do believe that there are way too many convenience foods out there that aren't good for ANYBODY. But some folks just tolerate carbohydrates way better than others. More power to you, guys. Just don't come down on us who really have benefited from the teachings of Dr. Atkins. Not only have I benefitted from it, it literally saved my life. I really felt like I was heading down a spiral of doom towards death's door until my doctor actually encouraged me to go on a low-carb diet. Since that day, I have felt better than I have felt in years. So the bottom line is - don't knock it unless you understand it. And don't go on a diet unless you need to. My skepticism about the Atkins Diet's healthfulness tweaked up a few notches when I read the book's recommendation for a daily fiber supplement. Nature did not intend fiber to come in a capsule or wafer. Still, I was eager to lose weight; if the pounds rolled off during the "Induction Phase" as the book promised, I could deal with capsulized fiber.
I was awakened very early on the fourth morning of this eating plan with a blazing, nausea-producing headache. The last time I'd had a headache that severe I had popped one of those over-the-counter herbal hormone pills hawked by actress Cybill Shepherd. I suspected the diet was to blame, but I pressed on. The morning headaches - not as bad as that first one, but annoying nonetheless - continued. I consulted my book. Sometimes, I learned, headaches are due to "withdrawal" from carbs. Riiiiiight. Look, carbs are not drugs. The authors' use of substance abuse terminology in connection with foods the human body requires was annoying, if not downright deceptive. The headaches, along with the calf cramps I was also experiencing, were not "withdrawal" symptoms. They were deprivation symptoms. Sure, I was getting plenty of calories, but I was not getting food my body needs. Still, I pressed on. After one week of following the diet religiously, I awoke with the usual headache and got on the scale. I'd lost two pounds, much less than what the book suggested I'd lose. (I learned at the Atkins website that my blood pressure medication might interfere with the diet's effectiveness. Too bad that little fact is buried deep in the book, under the chapter Week Seven) Hell, I can lose two pounds in a week on a balanced calorie-reducing diet and avoid the headaches and leg cramps altogether. I went downstairs and poured myself a bowl of Grapenuts and topped it with a sprinkling of raisins. And I loved each and every one of those 62 healthy and delicious carbohydrate grams. If you can keep up with the induction foods list for instance, you'll probably have to write it down anyway. It didn't cover any where near the amount of info that the book covers.

I gained almost 60 pounds both times I was pregnant and I was able to lose all of that within 3 1/2 months on the atkins diet. The first couple days is the hardest but after the 1st week its second nature because it's very easy to determine what you can and cannot eat. What I like the most is that you can stay on the induction phase for as long as you want. Now that I lost all of the weight plus some I've decided to go with the South Beach Diet because its less strict. If you want to lose a lot of weight fast without having to exercise READ THIS BOOK!

The book that saved my wardrobe.
I was put on the Atkins diet by my doctor. She is a firm believer in the low carb high protein diet, and it really does work. I read the book cover to cover before I started my diet and it all sounded reasonable to me. And like I said, I lost 36 lbs in 5 months with the Atkins diet, and I was very happy with it. I fell of the bandwagon while I had family in town last summer, but I'm about ready to get right back on it. It works, and I would recommend it to anyone. Gaining back 10 lbs doesn't compare to the 36 I initially lost without any extra excercise and just eating the foods I loved. I would recomend this to anyone who really desires to lose weight. And I have. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-01 15:37:48 EST)

About 5 years ago, with around 25 lbs to lose, I decided to try Atkins even though I couldn't exercise due to a sprained shoulder/broken rib from a ski fall. I'd had serious digestive issues my whole life, but to my surprise, after a couple of days on Atkins I felt better than I ever remembered feeling. And I was eating in a way I didn't normally eat.....more meat, more eggs, butter, some cheese, and more importantly....no grains/no sugar/no starches/no fruit. All my digestive woes were miraculously gone, and stayed gone for the 6 or 7 weeks that I did Atkins....and the weight melted off quite effortlessly despite no exercise at that time. I had tons of energy, no headaches any more, and just felt primo in every way. I was quite amazed, but while I believe exercise is incredibly important, this experience proved to me that losing weight is basically about what you eat. Although some uninformed people seem to think Atkins is all about stuffing yourself with endless fatty foods, this simply is not true. The truth is that whole fat items such as butter and cream are allowed, as are things such as steaks, but what really happens is that these foods are incredibly satiating and therefore you don't actually eat all that much of them volume wise. And on Atkins, most people actually end up eating MORE veggies than they did before! Most people with their horrible processed and fast food diets eat virtually NO fruits or vegetables! Yes, on Atkins your appetite actually diminishes because you are eating satiating foods, not empty processed foods, you are getting fats which your body needs, and you are getting good vegetables every day. The overall volume of food you eat goes down, and this diet is not a fat food stuff fest. Those who haven't read the book and studied what it recommends seem to have the strongest negative ideas about it all. What can I say, ignorance is ignorance!
A few years after that I learned I had celiac disease (inability to tolereate gluten, which means I had to eliminate wheat, rye & barley, also oatmeal from my diet to recover from this). Since then, I've eaten a modified Atkins type diet, and have only limited fruit, virtually no sugar, almost never any starches, but I do eat a lot of good veggies and limited, often low fat meat and fish. Atkins was right....and he has been fairly well vindicated in Gary Taubes' new 2007 book Good Calories Bad Calories. All the evidence is there, and he certainly explains why Atkins worked so well for me. It's the SUGAR and the insulin response it produces, and for me, it's also the grains and the starches, all of which send my insulin soaring as I am very insulin sensitive, apparently. Back to the Atkins book: It's still a good read in terms of getting your head around a few concepts if you're new to this, and shows how to set up the induction diet and subsequent increases in carb levels. In my opinion, there is no better diet to get you on the right dietary road because it gives you a handle on controlling insulin response, which in turn controls hunger, cravings and fat storage. I'd really recommend this book AND the Taubes one for a thorough understanding of all this and the confidence to eat this way if you are still skeptical. The proof is in how wonderful you feel, in addition to the fat you will lose. If I ate like some "experts" (think Ornish) recommend, I'd bloat up, gain weight, feel horrible all the time, and most definitely NOT be healthy. I've read a lot of diet books including all the most well known ones, tried the diets, and none of them worked except Atkins. I felt horrible on the other diets, couldn't control hunger and cravings, and could not lose weight by including the foods I am especially sensitive to (i.e. grains, rice, starches of any kind, sugar of any kind, most dairy except in small amounts). I really wish more people could be convinced of how much better they would feel eating the Atkins way, and in so doing, they would find it so easy to reach their correct weight. I found this book to be informative, but bland. Plus..it was too hard to stick to. It does teach you a lot about good carbs vs. bad carbs and how your system works, so in that aspect, it's good. Two weeks of no more than 20 carbs a day!?! I found that to compensate for this I was eating more of other bad stuff. Too much cheese, too much meat, and too much fat. I realized I was consuming more calories a day on this diet than before I started it. I do have to limit my carbs, but keeping it around 75g a day..I still lose weight. Plus, I limit my fat intake so not only am I doing low carbs, I'm keeping other bad stuff out of my system too. I've learned to eat closer to the source(ex. Potatoes instead of french fries) and avoid a lot of processed foods.
This diet may be preferred by some, but for me, It just didn't fit with my lifestyle. If I don't like it, I won't stick with it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-23 03:56:29 EST)

I read Dr. Atkin's first book about the Atkin's style of eating and while much of the information is the same, this book does give us some updates, such as providing the difference in definitions between ketosis and ketoacidosis. While a controversial eating plan, I know this plan can work and work well for those who choose to adhere to it. As with all diet or eating plans, one should consult with a physician first and use good common sense. Whether you want to implement a carb-controlled eating plan or not, this is a good place to find out how your body utilizes various nutrient sources. Excellent read, in my opinion.

I won't blame Dr. Atkins for not having excellent writer skills. After all, he has provided the world with what I think the most valuable diet books ever written.
The book is rich with information and details that can be easily grasped by the regular layman. You will still stumble by some repeated paragraphs here and there; you missed the idea, don't worry, it will eventually get repeated in the book at least once more, if not even in the same chapter or may be the same page. Doing Atkins myself, I would consider it a MUST read. If you are considering this way of eating, do yourself a favor and get a copy now. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-01 07:01:40 EST)

This is the book that started the whole low carb phenomenon. It is the original! Dr. Atkins pioneered the message about how destructive sugar is and explained why. He has changed thousands of lives for the better. When his first book went into print, Dr. Atkins took on the medical establishment who seemed to blindly accept the myth that fat is bad and carbohydrates are good. Many authors have expanded or replicated Atkins basic principles and written variations of his book, but this book is the Gold Standard and should be read by anyone wanting to educate him or herself on this subject. Basically, the Atkins Diet is a ketogenic diet. You basically eat all of the proteins that you want, hamburgers (without the bun), fish, bacon, pork chops, meatloaf, eggs, etc. The key is, on this diet, the removal of practically all carbohydrates, which means no fruit (because fructose is a sugar - carb), vegetables, breads, grains, pasta, candy, soda, dairy (because lactose is a sugar - carb), and table sugar (because sucrose is a carb). The only beverages one should consume is either black coffee (no sugar or cream - avoid non-dairy creamers as well) and water. The only condiments you should consume is either mustard or Hellman's Mayonaise (must be whole - avoid lite mayo).
The only thing I disagree with Dr. Atkins on is how long he instructs people to stay on this diet. That is why there has been somewhat of a controversy concerning his book. It only takes 3 days for the body to reach a state of ketosis (where the body begins to rely on keytones - stored fat as energy) instead of carbohydrates. The longest one should remain on this diet is only 8 weeks. Then, take a month off, and then repeat the diet again if necessary. Because, if you remain on any ketogenic diet for longer than 8 weeks at a time, you run the risk of your body going from a state of ketosis to acidosis, which can result in a person suffering from kidney stones. Other good ketogenic diet books for the beginner would be: Protein Power by Dr. Michael Eades The Ketogenic Diet: A Complete Guide for the Dieter and Practitioner by Lyle McDonald Dr. Atkins New Diet Cookbook by Dr. Robert C. Atkins, MD (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-25 14:42:23 EST)

The book does a great job of explaining why the diet works and motivates you considerably before even getting to the diet.
I used always feel tired, never felt like going out. And I used to eat a lot. I was always craving things. And when hunger hit me, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Then I tried Atkins. In the first 2 days of Atkins, I felt hungry and worse than before, but on the 3rd day, my energy broke through the roof. I felt so much better. And it feels amazing. I went on to loose 30 pounds so far and my appetite decreased by 4 times. And now, hunger doesn't hit me like bricks anymore and I'm very thankful for that. It feels like hunger taps me on the shoulder and says, "Hey, it's time to eat now, just take your time with food - I'll be waiting." Before this diet I was totally hopeless and thought I was born to be fat. Now I know that I wasn't. Atkins is a life-saver. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-06 05:23:28 EST)

This diet has improved the quality of my life more than I can describe. I had gained nearly 50 pounds after two consecutive pregnancies, and couldn't seem to lose it no matter what diet I tried. This one helped me drop 14 in just the first 2 weeks. I'm now almost half way there at 25 lost, and thrilled. I eat more veggies than ever before, and drink more water and exercise too, so its really healthy.

I think this book is worth reading, and if you need a bit of inspiration and some additional pointers for life long success, get The 3:00 PM Secret: Live Slim and Strong Live Your Dreams as a companion to Atkins! You won't regret reading these books!

When I started the my new (Atkins Lifestyle)I was 5'2",375#. I had high blood pressure, bad Cholesterol levels, type II diabetes, congestive heart failure, and edema of the lower legs and feet. Doctors at Shane's hospital gave me 24 months to live if I did not lose at least 100#. That was 4 years, and 185# ago! I still need a little BP medication, but ALL other problems are gone. My doctor has been checking my Kidneys, and Liver functions for the last 3 1/2 years, and NO problems.
I am not suggesting you use this Lifestyle, just that it saved my Life! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-15 14:43:43 EST)

Mindless garbage for people completely uninformed about nutrion and content to stay that way. Ignorance is NOT bliss. Thankfully few can stay on this deadly diet for very long. If they could, society would ultimately have to foot the bill for the millions of cancer cases that would result. It's bad enough diabetes is going to cost the US billions. Why are people so willing to try everything EXCEPT healthy, natural eating?????!!!
Also it is a diet that is completely unsustainable ecologically. If this diet were to be adopted by the masses and meat/dairy consumption were to increase accordingly, we simply would not have enough farmland to raise all the cattle/poultry. Also the amount of fossil fuel wasted producing that much meat would be devastating. Let's not forget the massive amounts of pestcides, antibiotics and chemical fertilizers required to farm that much livestock, above and beyond what is already being used. The dead author implies that this is a natural way of eating yet the diet requires you to suppliment vitamins, minerals, fiber etc. That doesn't sound very natural to me. A child could see that the diet is completely lacking many components of a healthy human diet. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-08-19 02:42:40 EST)

Loaded with good practical information. Reading this book took the hype out of all the crap I was hearing about Atkin's plan. It put me back in control of my eating. I lost forty pounds. I feel much better now. I liked this book so much, I bought a second hardbound edition.

Atkins boasts about the fact that you can eat all the foods you love and lose weight. Well, all the foods I love happen to be: bananas, apples, oranges, mangos, papayas, white rice, beans, and pasta. I don't love cheese, fried pork skins, chicken, or steak. How then am I supposed to eat the foods I love and lose weight? This is extremely biased because Atkins assumes everyone loves things like cheese, fried pork skins, and steak.

Like many of you, I found myself wondering what the differences were between the various diet programs. What I discovered is that all of the major diet books are well written and share many similarities. None of them offered an "silver bullet" to weight loss - it primarily comes down to keeping your calories burned greater than your calories eaten. There are theories presented about glycemic index, good vs. bad carbs, etc., but at the end of the day it's about calories and exercise.
In this review, I've tried to offer brief summaries of each diet book/program in hopes that it might help you pick out the one that would work best for you. Don't pay too much attention to the number of stars, as it's my own subjective rating based on effectiveness, ease of use, and ability to stick with the diet. Instead, try to discern which diet might fit your lifestyle better. The Abs Diet, **** This book is written by David Zinczenko, the editor of Men's Health Magazine. The diet likes the number 6 - promising "6 pack abs in 6 weeks," by eating 6 meals a day. Each meal is built around the "power 12" foods. There is a strong emphasis on whey supplements. The fitness program was easy to follow but perhaps too strenuous for beginners and seemed better suited to men. Strong points are excellent nutritional content and strong exercise. Weak points are questionable claims about rapid weight loss and "6 pack" abs, and mediocre meal plans. Average recommended daily calories are 1,890, with 7 fruits and vegetable servings. The South Beach Diet **** The SB Diet is a slightly more permissive version of the Atkins low-carb diet. It is based on the premise that eating low-glycemic foods (foods that don't raise blood sugar) decreases cravings for sugar and refined carbs. Like many of the diets, there are two phases. In the first phase, fruits, sugar, and grains are banned outright. Phase 2 allows some fruit, high-fiber grains, and dark chocolate. The simplicity of the diet might appeal to many busy dieters. However the emphasis on the glycemic index and insufficient exercise sections are a drawback. Recipes are easy to prepare, but some called for unusual ingredients (a clever cook could make substitutions). Average recommended daily calories are a mere 1,340, with 13 fruits and vegetable servings (mostly veggies). The Sonoma Diet **** The Sonoma Diet is an updated low-carb diet with a Mediterranean theme. Again, it is broken into two phases, called "waves." In "Wave 1," the dieter is banned from eating most sweet or refined foods. The much longer "Wave 2" permits fruits and wine. It has a unique method of calculating portions by filling sectors of small plates with specified food categories. The diet is healthy but complex. It is also very restrictive, which makes it more difficult to stay on. Also, the book doesn't offer enough on exercise. The recipes were tasty but elaborate to prepare. Average recommended daily calories are a mere 1,390, with 10 fruits and vegetable servings. Ultra-Metabolism *** The Ultra-Metabolism Diet is designed around the assertion that people get fat because their body's systems become toxic, inflamed, and imbalanced. Again, this is a two phase diet. Phase 1 is an initial "detox" period. The longer Phase 2 is a "rebalancing" period. Overall, the dieter must eliminate white rice, refined grains, most red meats, and caffeinated beverages. The theory of your body requiring detoxification goes beyond any scientific evidence and rings a bit of late night television "miracle detox bowel-cleansing pills." The diet is fairly restrictive and complicated. The exercise section was brief but practical. Average recommended daily calories are 1,660, with 12 fruits and vegetable servings. Volumetrics, **** The Volumetrics Diet is based on Penn State research. It aims to maximize the amount of food you can eat for a given caloric intake. This is done primarily by eating reduced-fat products, adding in lots of vegetables, and using low-fat cooking techniques. It encourages eating a first course of broth-based soup or low-calorie salad (not heavily laden with dressing, cheese or bacon) to take the edge off your appetite. Recent clinical studies have shown this diet to be very effective. The recipes are appetizing but time consuming. Average recommended daily calories are 1,500, with 14 fruits and vegetable servings. The Zone Diet, **** The Zone Diet was designed to keep your blood sugar and hormones at optimal levels so that you can better fight obesity and diseases. It requires that each meal consist of 30% protein, 30% fat, and 40% carbs (based on calories). The diet allows many fruits, but almost no grains except oatmeal. The meals are simple to prepare and nutritionally balanced. But having to keep to the 30/30/40 balance is very tedious and requires lots of preplanning. Recent studies showed that the overall weight loss was below average. Average recommended daily calories are 1,660, with 17 fruits and vegetable servings. Eat More, Weigh Less, *** The Eat More, Weigh Less (Ornish) Diet is a low-fat vegetarian diet that bans all meat, fish, oils, alcohol, sugar, and white flour. Their clinical studies suggest that strictly following the diet can prevent or reverse some diseases. Ornish argues that it is easier to make drastic changes to diet rather than small ones. The diet offers the most food per calorie of any of the diets. It is actually lower in fat than current USDA guidelines recommend. Studies have shown good long term weight loss, but a relatively high drop-out rate. Average recommended daily calories are 1,520, with 17 fruits and vegetable servings. Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, *** The Atkins Diet is the grand daddy of them all. As with many of the other diets, it is divided into two phases. The first phase is a two week induction period that bans nearly all carbs. The second phase is only slightly less restrictive, but does slowly add more vegetables, fruit, and wine. Research has suggested that Atkins' dieters are less hungry than on many other diets. But the diet is difficult to adhere to and has a high drop-out rate. Long term weight loss has been shown to be average. The single most glaring concern with the Atkins diet is that the nutritional profile is far outside conventional dietary guidelines. (We've all known people eating handfuls of bacon, eggs, and cheese for breakfast, claiming they were on a diet). Average recommended daily calories are 1,520, with 6 fruits and vegetable servings. Again, please don't worry too much about my ranking of the diet books - it's completely subjective. My suggestion is to simply find a program that seems to fit your lifestyle best. Please be kind enough to indicate if reviews are helpful. Written by Arthur Bradley, author of "Process of Elimination" - an intense thriller in which a martial artist, a greedy corporate attorney, and a sexy conspiracy theorist team up to stop a world-class sniper from killing presidential candidates. I accidentally started a low-carb diet last summer when I ate a BBQ plate for lunch and had water to drink. An hour later I was driving along talking about how good I felt. My mother and wife asked me what I'd had for lunch, and they deduced that I'd had a very low-carb meal. They also mention that's what the Atkin's diet was based on. They both seemed to know about it. So, we all started looking in it, buying the books, and getting more information.
All three of us started on Atkins in August of 2006. I lost over 20 lbs the first month. My wife lost nearly 20. Well, then she got pregnant and we threw the diet out the window. My mother, who turned 71 yesterday - and survived stage-4 colon cancer in '95 - remained on the Atkins diet, and lost 40 lbs within a few months. She's since lost 10 more lbs, for a total of over 50 lbs gone. She looks better than ever! And has more energy than any of us. And she's had little periods, like a recent trip to France, where she was off the diet briefly, but gained no weight. Well, my wife is due to have a baby in a few weeks. She's obviously gained weight. And I've gained weight, too. I've been running out of steam - dealing with her being so pregnant, and me picking up the slack with our 3-year-old son. We'd planned on both getting back on Atkins as soon as the baby was born. But I know I'll need even more energy in the coming weeks - as she gets closer to the due date. Two nights ago, I was "self medicating" with food, and really pigged out. I made two big chocolate milke shakes, and later ate most of a huge Danish. I was wiped. I felt like crap. I had no energy. I needed a change - and fast. Yesterday, I decided to get back on Atkins. My mother, who's still on it, was thrilled. I invited her over to a dinner I made with steak, lax, mozzarella cheese, aparagus, mashed cauliflower [made just like mashed potatoes with lots of real butter and heavy cream], and some zucchini slices drenched in Marie's Blue Cheese dressing. We had a feast! I'd been on Atkins enough that I'd played around with some amazing meals. I still remember how to shop and eat for the diet. It's like riding a bike, and I'm so glad I'm back on the diet. I came here because I was researching more on the Atkins diet again. I'm sitting here about 24 hours into the diet, and I have more energy than I've had in months. And now I remember how great it felt to be on the Atkins diet. At this point, I didn't start the diet to lose weight - although that will naturally come. I started because I need the energy for my family and the baby that's on the way. Although, you can read tons of info all about the Atkins diet right on the web. The entire diet and Dr. Atkins philosophy makes much more sense when you read the book. So, I highly recommend it to anyone contemplating this diet. There were articles earlier in 2007 that had American Medical Association results showing Atkins as, not only the most successful diet, but also one with health benefits as well. That's a big deal. And for them to come along and have to confirm that Atkins is "the best diet for weight lose and improved health." [...] (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-03 19:12:47 EST)

I accidentally stared a low-carb diet last summer when I ate a BBQ plate for lunch and had water to drink.

Adkins wrote several books. Since this was a revised version, I bought it to go with the other Adkins book.

A down-to-earth weight loss lifestyle that works. With sensible moderation at the core of his philosophy, Atkins has helped many lose weight and keep it off. This book is already working! I've only had it for 2.5 weeks and I'm seeing results. I must say that I am also loving ' the T_r_u_t_h about C_a_f_f_e_i_n_e `by K_u_s_h_n_e_r.

This is the second week I am on the Atkins and right now I would not trade it for any other diet. I am losing the weight slowly but I need to exercise more and I need to control this darn "sweet tooth", for chocolate which is a no-no. Dr. Atkins give helpful tips on what you should do. I have not done the induction at all though, maybe if I had the money and the time to cook all those things :0)

I know it sounds like an overstatement to say 'it changed my life' about a mere diet book but it really did! I was trying hard to lose my baby weight and also trying to improve my lipid profile. I was losing weight with low-fat, low-cal dieting but even when I was consuming 1500 cals a day I was always hungry. I was also working out each and every day of the week to help speed up the weight loss. At one point the scale just stopped moving! I hit a plateau that just wouldn't go away. I decreased my calorie intake to 900 cals per day and then I increased it back to 1500 thinking my body is going into starvation mode. I tried the zig zag dieting nothing was working and I was at my wits end when I decided to give low-carb a try.
First 2-3 days are just horrible, it's like your body is screaming for carbs!! That's all you can think of each and every minute of the day. Then all of sudden the weight starts to melt off and it motivates you to stick around and then you REALLY lose the cravings for carbs! The book basically alters your core beliefs about fats and calories and the whole attitude of looking at food. I know it's going to sound silly but it is enlightening! I had stopped buying real butter, cheese and reduced my meat consumption and now I eat all that and plus low carb substitutes for other comman foods. I almost felt like we are let down by the food industry, FDA, doctors anyone who is trying to tell us to eat low-fat food. Both my parents are diabetics and I know that it is going to be my destiny as well. I am genetically set-up for that but now I control what I put in mouth and can possibly delay the onset of diabetes. Knowledge is power isn't it? This diet is not cheap by any means and I don't eat red meat so Chicken and fish are my only options but butter, cheeses and the low-carb products will run up your grocery bill. But you can not put a price tag on health. After following low-carb diet for about 6 months, my husband realized that I am pretty serious about it and he suggested to get blood work done just to make sure I am not killing myself in order to stay thin and so I did. My good cholesterol improved by 20 points and my triglycerides were down by 50%!!! I was shocked to see such improvement. My doctor sent a note saying 'just keep doing what you are doing' and that's exactly what I am going to do! I am a converted Low-carber now!!! It's a new way to live! ATKINS FOR LIFE!
