Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes

Until Dr. Barnard's scientific breakthrough, most health professionals believed that once you developed diabetes, you were stuck with it-and could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems. But as this groundbreaking work reveals, this simply is not true. In a series of studies-the most recent funded by the National Institutes of Health-Dr. Barnard has shown that it is possible to repair insulin function and reverse type 2 diabetes. By following his scientifically proven, life-changing program, diabetics can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the standard diet; and cut back on and in some cases eliminate medications while reducing the risk of diabetes complications. "The long overdue epic scientific breakthrough in diabetes is here...an obvious must-read for health professionals and for diabetic and potential diabetic patients." -Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., MD, preventive cardiology consultant, Cleveland Clinic "This is the approach to follow...the clinically proven way to get your blood sugar under control... and start living again."-John McDougall, MD, founder and medical director of the McDougall program "Dr. Barnard's book is no exaggeration...The signs and symptoms of diabetes can be reversed, and he's got the evidence to prove it."-Jennie Brand-Miller, PhD, author of The New Glucose Revolution

Dr Barnard makes an important observation that obesity and adult onset diabetes are relatively rare in populations that share a common trait: a diet that is low in animal protein (and fat), and that is high in complex carbohydrates (and fiber). The role of genetics can be minimized simply by observing that the above health problems increase in these people when they adopt a "western" diet. While directed at diabetics, the advice contained in this book also applies to anyone who wants to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Dr. Barnard's diet is essentially vegan, and his guidelines appear to be very similar to those of the late nutritionist, Nathan Pritikin, who came out with his own book in the late 70's. Since appetite control seems to be a problem with adhering to any diet, a nice feature of the plan is the idea of "volumetrics"; By choosing foods that are high fiber and not calorie dense, the problem of hunger common with other diets can be reduced.

At least for weight loss, this diet actually works. Although I haven't yet completely eliminated animal products, by combining the basic guidelines of the diet with 30 min/day of exercise (alternating aerobic/strength training), I've lost about 15 lbs in 5 weeks without really starving!

As a health professional and a diabetic, I am very interested in material that offers new ways to affect your health. Dr Barnard's book is well written and is a most useful way to seriously attack the epidemic of poor health in the US and the world. People need information that offers a choice and this book does. There is no magic solution, but to change your health you have the change your lifestyle. I have been following the regimen and have lost weight as well as lowered my need for certain medications I am taking to regulate my diabetes. This is of course under the supervision of my M.D..

Can it be possible? Can we reverse diabetes by just changing our eating habits? Dr. Barnard says so. I bought this book because my husband and I saw Dr. Barnard on PBS. He convinced us to reevaluate what we eat and how it affects our bodies' mechanisms. In addition to his powerful persuasion, he gives his web site for further help in this new quest for good health. I always thought that a vegan lifestyle would be beneficial, but I never tried it until I purchased this book. I am into my third week now, and I am eager to see how my cholesterol numbers are affected. This book has some "good stuff."

I loved the book and it was as described. However, I purchased and paid for it on Sunday
and the book was not even shipped out for 8 days. Once it wa shipped, I received it
very promptly. I did not understand why it took so long to be shipped. I felt that
waiting 8 days was a long time before shipping and that is the only thing that was not
smooth about the transaction. Everything else was just fine.

The hardback copy of the book arrived 2 weeks before the softback. Somehow I didn't realize that I had purchased both. It is an extraordinary book which we are using as a guide to change our eating habits. The message is so in line with the message we are receiving about osteoporosis and eating the right foods, eliminating the gastly drugs prescribed by the doctors.

The reviewers who blame the author for not mentioning exercising in his book are absolutely wrong. Of course exercising is good for one's overall health but it is completely outside of the scope of this book. The author specifically talks about ways of reversing diabetes with a proper diet instead of using drugs. There is a whole range of other positive things that you can do to improve your overall health but this book is not an encyclopedia of natural health but a program for reversing diabetes.

And what an interesting and effective program that is! This is a book about a great healthy nutritional plan not necessarily for diabetics only. It is a surprisingly easy plan to follow as it never makes you hungry but you will end up with a lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol level, and also lower body weight. The recipes are tasty and they don't result in the feeling of meat deprivation, which is a good prerequisite for keep the diet for a long term, hopefully for life...

Dr. Barnard in a respectable American scientist. His book is well researched and his system is scientifically proven to bring good results. Yet as the same time, the book is free of doctor's jargon and is easy to read.

But Dr. Barnard is not alone in his approach to treating diabetes. In the book Cure th e Incurable, a renowned Russian scientist writes the following in the chapter about diabetes:

"Thirty or forty years ago, when we didn't have today's abundance of highly processed refined food, deli products, (...) diabetes was a rare disease. People who got it were usually advanced in years and their pancreas wasn't efficient any longer due to old age. (...) We know that our digestive system, if fed natural non-processed food, can produce all hormones necessary for our body. It means that we can get rid of diabetes by putting some efforts into our diet..."

For those who would like to read more about not only the ways of treating diabetes but also other so called "incurable" diseases, and for ways of keeping the body fit and healthy in a natural way, in addition to above mentioned book I also suggest reading Live 150 - Your Body Maintenance Handbook.

The title of this book can tend to be a bit misleading, but it at least misleads in the right direction. The entire "program" can be completely summed up in two words: vegan diet. Other than recommending the daily use of a multivitamin, keeping your diet free of all animal products (meat, eggs, milk, etc.) IS the program. You will find plenty of evidence supporting the theory that a vegan diet can dramatically improve one's health in the book, which makes surprisingly few references to diabetes directly. The book could just as easily have been titled Dr. Neal Barnard's Program For Reversing high cholesterol, or hypertension, or obesity. It really does not address diabetes as an isolated disease, but rather as part of an overall health problem that could potentially be cured through diet.

That being said, there is almost no emphasis whatsoever on other factors that may help improve one's diabetes, or one's overall health. You will find only passing references to exercise, supplements, prescription medications and other staples of traditional diabetes treatment. Exercise, in particular, is ignored to the point of absurdity.

The evidence to support the benefits of switching to a vegan diet are compelling. Still, readers need to understand that this is basically a "diet book", rather than a complete plan for diabetes reversal. I understand, and even support, the message Dr. Barnard is promoting. I would have preferred that the book's approach to treatment be more well-rounded than it was though.

I'm a little disturbed by the fact that virtually every good reviewer for this book has never reviewed any other books. (I'm certain that will change immediately, but it's the case as of this review) It's a shame that, now, when I'm interested in a book, I have to check out more than the reviews. I have to check out the reviewers as well, checking whether the reviewers are actually regular Amazon customers who are doing us a service by giving us their opinion, or are biased. Don't get me wrong - as one review stated "don't throw out the baby with the bathwater". I realize that a good product might have artificially pumped up reviews, say by co-workers or friends of the author. But, unfortunately, I've bought too many awful books with good reviews, so, now, I look for reviewers who have reviewed other books. This might be a very good book, but I'll have to pass, based on what I can see about the reviewers, themselves.

Almost a year ago I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 64. I thought that I would escape its impact through a relatively reasonable lifestyle even though my father died of it at age 68 after having it for 25 years. The diagnosis hit me like a brick...there was no way I was going to suffer its possible diverse ramifications or food exchanges like my father endured.
A trip to the bookstore somehow allowed me to find this fantastic information. My A1C was 7.3 and glucose was at 183 when tested and after a week of reading the book carefully and spending a few weeks coming up to speed at the grocery store both my wife and I became vegan.
The results have been nothing short of astounding. Even the family doctor who was prepared to start me on a drug regimen is totally amazed as I progressively lost weight, lowered LDL and triglicerides and raised HDL. I have lost 25#, the A1C is now at 5.9 and feel better than I have since college age. I found everything he predicted to be the truth (which as we all know in todays' world is in short supply. We will continue to develop our cooking skills and look forward to even more success.

MAKE THIS LIFE ALL IT CAN BE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY...THERE IS A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM AND IT IS SO SIMPLE.

This is a book worth reading not just for diabetes but for many other aliments. My doctor recommended I read it when I told her I was not going to take any Cholesterol-Lowering drugs. I already have some blockage in my arteries. After changing my diet as recommended in this book and going back to the doctor 2 months later, my cholesterol level had dropped 66 points to 166 and I had lost 8 lbs. My doctor was surprised that I had become a Vegan, and that in such a short time, it had made so much difference. Thank you Dr. Neal Barnard. I highly recommend this book.

Interesting facts...

I have found and have also read that if you exercise in the morning
before eating, does reduce you blood sugar for the day...
don't eat anything with HIGH Fructose cornsyrup...very
bad for blood glucose..from other sources I have found out
that since the introduction of Hfcs, diabetes has risen
significantly and you would be surprised how many products have it
it turns off the brain hormone or signal that tells you when you have
eaten enough......
even mayo and Ketchup..has sugar..good grief, I never
realized this....even bread that says sugar free may
have mannitol in it...

1.THe A1c test(mine 6.00 and 5.8 another time)
is reflective of your glucose for
three months...in other words what you have eaten
that would influence the test up or down...

2. good use and tips as preventative if diabetes runs in your family..
(my mother and 2 sisters have diabetes)

3. This promotes a 100% Vegan diet...which I have conformed to
only up to 70% of the time...( I can't totally commit to Vegan)

4.good info on hdl,ldl,tryglercides,blood pressure...
....good recipes.

5. Cinnamon good for stablilizing blood glucose...I have
sliced apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon and spread
with organic almond butter or organic peanut butter..
great snack when you are craving sweet...

6. Dr. Barnards vitamin recommendations excellent....

7. Recommended Ezekial bread which is low glycemic,
(I have used for a long time before I read it..flourless bread...
very good toasted with organic almond butter and cinnamon..ezekial
is found in the frozen organic section and also has raisen bread,
and english muffins....)

8.stress increases blood sugar levels and blood pressure...
I can vouch for that personally...

9. Also fat intake extremely important...so even olive oil
tho healthy can wreak havoc when used too much....

10. Studies conducted verify that people that follow his vegan diet
are reversing and lowering their blood glucose numbers..

11. Good idea to pay attention to the glycemic index of foods..
some glycemic examples in the book but you can web research or google
glycemic index and can print a whole list of them...

I did try this 70% vegan and lowfat and it did reduce my fasting and
2 hours after eating numbers......I feel better have more energy..
I am doing this so I don't have to take medications

I can't totally give up eggs, chicken and beef but I have days
when I don't eat meat, dairy, eggs, it makes sense to
give your system a break to recoup....
and heal itself...at least it has done well for me...

Even if you can't go completely Vegan this is a must read
Book... glycemic index important, your fat intake
significantly affects your blood glucose and a good idea to at
least cut back on your meat portions, days I have meat at lunch...
I either significantly reduce meat to a few bites at dinner
or not have meat at dinner..in other words when your liver
is overloaded with too much fat and cholesterol it doesn't
function as well and affects your other glands, for example
your pancreas which negotiates your glucose...

I have cut back on fat (sigh...I love olive oil)
now i use the spray evo or extra light...this is working
for me..and I am losing weight..

Neal Barnard's book is an offshoot of an NIH funded controlled study in which he compares clinical results in patients who have followed his low fat vegan diet with those in patients who followed the ADA (American Diabetic Association) diet.

Patients following the low fat vegan diet had much better control of sugar levels, weight and diabetic complications. Perhaps surprisingly, ease of following the diet was also better for the low fat vegan diet since part of that diet was a high quantity of satiating low fat food. Many patients on this diet were able to eliminate all anti-diabetes medications.

Barnard also cites others' research using similar diets for diabetics. One particularly remarkable result was in diabetic neuropathy which can present as pain, often severe, in the region served by nerves damaged by diabetes. In two weeks 17 of the 21 patients had total relief and the other 4 had noticeable improvements.

I should buy two of these books -- one to keep in the kitchen and the other one to bring with me when I travel.

Not only is this book "empowering" but it is also a life (and possibly limb) saver. It is logical, sensible, filled with extremely helpful facts and basic scientific information about the inner workings of diabetes and other physical processes connected with it. Dr. Barnard (who is a great speaker by the way) educates and informs the reader with information that is easy to assimilate and at the same time, demystifies the "patient/doctor" relationship, even though this "relationship" is in the form of a book.

Nutritional guidelines as well as a good basic explanation of specific diabetes medications, are all extremely helpful.

The charts are very useful, the recipes are plentiful, and while I cannot tolerate things like nutritional yeast and certain spices mentioned in these recipes, I can still utilize (and in some cases, modify) many of these recipes.

This book contains a lot of excellent informatio. The only problem I have with it is that this book seems to assume that everyone reading it is having a weight problem. Dr. Bernard says to cut out olive oil and nuts because fats make you fat. If I lose more than 3 pounds I will be too underweight so I am nervous about this suggestion. I believe I can follow all his other advice but cooking with out olive oil and not eating nuts will be extremely hard for me to enjoy my food. I am thinking of trying to reach him to see if there are any other reasons to avoid these two items aside from the high fat they contain. I have not entirely read the book to be fair and haven't tried his three week trial diet yet.

I did find most of the information useful and I have passed it on to my parents who actually do need it for modifying their lifestyle.

(Hide Review...)  Good book--but..............
Reviewer Permalink
I found this book after being diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. It prescribes a strict vegan diet as a means of reversing the disease. To date, my results have been very positive--my blood sugar has fallen and I am now clinically non-diabetic. That is pretty terrific. My only reservations are that Dr. Barnard does not disclose that he might be politically motivated. He never states that he has close personal ties to PETA, nor does he mention any considerations whatsoever might be a factor behind advancing his diet other than health. This raises the question--are there non-vegan alternatives which would also have good results?

Conclusion: advancing animal rights is ethical as is advancing health. However, avoiding full disclosure of one's background, affilations and possible motivation is, if not unethical, certainly not optimal. Still, this is a good book.

(Hide Review...)  Interesting Approach
Reviewer Permalink
I am interested in this approach, but some of the scientific evidence seems to be based on rather small studies and some of those with not clearly spelled out designs. I think that there is probably a strong connection between the diet that Barnard is suggesting and the level of insulin resistance, but there may well be other factors involved. For example, no studies have been done looking at vegetarian versus vegan diets and the effect on type 2 diabetes. No studies are mentioned that try to quantify the effect of eggs alone, nor studies to measure the effect of milk products from different sources (goat cheese versus cow cheese, for example). Because of these omissions, it is hard not to feel like Barnard is pushing the vegan agenda for its sake alone.

Hi,

I found this diet plan is very helpful in my losing weight. I also drink alkaline water, and that has also helped in reducing the need to use diabetic medications.

This is an excellent book. I don't have diabetes but wanted to make sure I don't get diabetes. This book has it all - 1) The Breakthrough - tells all about type 1 and type 2 diabetes, 2)The Program - Menu's, Healthful Weight Control, and exercise 3) Complete Health - re healthy heart, nerves, eyes, & kidneys. PLUS menus and recipes. I would recommend any of Dr. Neal Barnard's books. "The Best" in Arizona!

I must say that this latest information based in clinical research was a life saver. Generally I am a little leery of the medical "system". So I started this book with an attitude. I soon saw that the book is so well written and the information so practical, I knew I had found the information needed to help with this diabetes. I found that, based on previous information, I was heading down the wrong path. I have been using Dr. Barnard's program and experiencing wonderful results. I highly recommend this book.

i awaited the book with impatience. i am a type 2 diabetic and looked forward to new insights and suggestions i could use.
the explanations are probably good, but nothing new if you have read up on the condition. The program basically consists of eliminating all animal products, and reducing use of oils (and peanut butter). in fact, to me, a vegan diet, a switch i am not willing to make. i expected more of the book.

This is a good book, but I like Eat to Live (2003) or Eat For Health (2008) by Joel Fuhrman, MD better. Both doctors recommend a low fat, vegan diet, but my sense is that Dr. Fuhrman has better basis for his recommendations and his information is more up to date.

My husband is a Type 2 diabetic and although he controls it well, just as this book pointed out, the current diet and treatment are only slowing down the erosion of his health from the diabetes. The research and studies that Dr Bernard shares in the book gave us a much clearer understanding of what diabetes is, how it affects the body and what is the causes of the different types of diabetes.
The diet that Dr Bernard's research has come up with may seem extreme to someone who has been following the typical high protein diet that the medical community endorses, but if you can have quality of life as you age, avoiding blindness, kidney failure and a host of other health problems by following Dr Bernard's recommended diet then I think it's worth trying.

The diet in this book is a vegan version of the nearly-vegan, low-fat diabetes diet given by Nathan Pritikin (Live Longer Now, 1974); identical to the vegan diabetes diet of John McDougall, MD (The McDougall Plan, 1983); and a vegan version (without supplements) of the low-fat diabetes diet employed by Julian Whitaker, MD (Reversing Diabetes, 1987). All in all, the author's claims to originality don't hold any water.

The only things original in this book seem to be the results of A1c measurements, and comparison with the ADA diet (which has been known to be lacking for many years).

The author never mentions the highly successful diabetes treatment programs that have been in operation for the better part of 20-30 years at the Pritikin Longevity Center in Aventura FL, the Whitaker Wellness Institute in Newport Beach CA, and Dr. McDougall's Health and Medical Center in Santa Rosa CA. These three programs have successfully treated a combined total estimated at over 40,000 diabetes patients.

The author never mentions how he, personally, lionized the Pritikin Program in one of his previous books (The Power of Your Plate, 1995), and then forgot about it in the present book.

All in all, Dr. Barnard seems to want the reader to get the impression he invented the vegan diet and was the first to use it to treat diabetes. He does say, "A new idea," "We have completely redesigned the dietary approach to diabetes," ". . . an entirely new approach to diabetes," and "This program is truly a revolution." All claims that appear to be untrue and unwarranted.

Whichever diabetes book you decide to read, first read Prtikin's Live Longer Now, 1974. Used copies are available on Amazon.com. I bought a nice used hardback for $5.

As an RN I find this information easy for the lay person to understand and apply. My brother has used a lot of this information and his diabetes is very controlled (off medication) and he has no other diabetic related problems. This is a must read for all diabetes and their families. The large print book is so helpful!

I bought this book after I received high blood sugar and high cholesterol reports on a blood test. I decided to give the program a try during Lent (40 Days) and then have my blood work done to compare results. After doing this program my results were so much better that I have made it how I live and eat on a daily basis. It is a true life-changing way to eat and I recommend this book and program to anyone who wants to be healthy. By following Dr. Barnard's program I lost weight, my blood sugar and cholesterol counts lowered to the normal range and I have the energy and vitality to do activities that I love to do.

Having a 13 and 15 year-old child both diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of four, I continue to be amazed with the lack of knowledge that most physicians express about Type 1 diabetes. It is obvious to me that Dr. Barnard is just another Doc on an ego high to make money by publishing. To title a book "Program for Reversing Diabetes" is once again irresponsible and erroneous by not stating on the cover that this ONLY applies to Type 2 diabetes and only a small percentage of Type 2 at best. Unfortunately, there is NO reversing of Type 1 diabetes. It is true that one can improve there glucose levels by using an insuling pump, exercising, and eating a healthy diet. But reversing Type 1 diabetes is not yet an option. After being an active diabetes advocate for over 10 years with several trips to D.C. and lectures from Doctors from the National Institute of Health, I have learned that the facts show that the treatment for Type 1 diabetes is very $$ lucrative and finding a cure is not worth the risk for private industry. The cure for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes must come from Government funding (after the War). In the meanwhile, we will continue to have Doctors to profit from misleading information.
