Don't Pee on My Leg and Tell Me It's Raining: America's Toughest Family Court Judge Speaks Out

¡n we get some reality in here?ߡsks Judy Sheindlin, former supervising judge for Manhattan Family Court. For twenty–four years she has laid down the law as she understands it:

● If you want to eat, you have to work.

● If you have children, you'd better support them.

  • If you break the law, you have to pay.

  • If you tap the public purse, you'd better be accountable.

Now she abandons all judicial restraint in a scathing critique of the system – filled with realistic hard–nosed alternatives to our bloated welfare bureaucracy and our soft–on–crime laws.

I just finished reading this book and it was amazing! I couldn't put it down. Judge Judy is so honest and has many incredible positions on the justice system that each state should take note. I personally agree with her on all of her stances toward welfare, incarceration, and law in general. A must read for all politicians!

Judge Judy didn't disappoint in this book with her life's experiences as a judge in New York. It helps you realize what the justice system is like and the people they see on a daily basis. There are some very shocking cases!

People seem to surprise you whenever you turn around. Her career as a Judge in New York must have many stories and she shares some doozies with you in this book...

Definitely worth it!

I am a fan of Judge Judy. I like her no nonsense approach to life and the legal system. Having myself grown up in a family of police and police chiefs, I know full well the crap that goes on in life as well as the legal system. Having just gone through a legal fiasco of being accused of something I didn't and wouldn't do, I prayed to have a judge like Judge Judy preside over the case. This drug out for 2 years while the other person smeared my name in every media outlet she could think of - even the FBI - and every place where I was scheduled to give talks about my book. I finally had to sue her to shut her up and then she hid like a scared @*&%$! Well after dragging this out by not providing us with their evidence and discovery - which I am sure she didn't have, they decided to settle out of court with a public retraction and an apology as to what she had said about me. So I never got my day in court, but oh I wish I had just to hear Judge Judy tell her "you can't fix stupid and dumb is forever!" I recommend her books, they are funny, comical and down to earth legal approches to life in the court system. You will get a whole new perspective on the way things are done and they might get you fired up to get a wrong you have been dealt righted. Read Them!!

First off I love Judge Judy, I think she is brilliant, funny, and right on the money with her quips and viewpoints.....secondly, i found this book absolutely tortuous to read, and gave up after about 70 pages of it, for some reason I just could not go on with it anymore....Judy's ideas on how to solve what ails our society are insightful, and worth taking note of. However, the book is so poorly written, i couldn't continue to finish it. maybe its just the way it was put togther, but this was not at all what i was hoping it would be.

This is a very insightful book about her life experiences as a family court judge in the New York City Area. She has stories from her life, which she ties into some social changes she thinks would make the US a better place to live. It was a very interesting book and I would recommend it.

If you've ever wondered what goes on in a family court in the City of New York, here's your chance to see it from the eyes of the judge. When you see Judge Judy on tv, I believe you're seeing a lighter side to her. After reading this book, you'll realize that she has had to rule on the most heart breaking of cases, only to have the social service administration or the parole system undercut what she determined to be the right decision.

This book made me want to cheer out loud!! Judge Judy points out, as so many in society do, that there is a lack of responisbility out there. So many people in our county refuse to take responsibility for their own stupid mistakes and the rest of us pay for it. There is too much reliance on people who live by the law and live their lives responsibly.
I did feel rather sad to realize though, that she is just ONE judge who takes action in her own little corner of America. If more people thought like her, and followed her actions on getting tough with the deadbeats of the nation, this country would not have the severe problems it has. I wish more people in a position of power could see things how she sees it.

Oh how I hate this cr@p! How can anybody find this programme even remotely entertaining? Its so boring. The cases are mundane and trivial. Who cares if your car door got scratched, or somebody didn't pay back a $500 loan? If you enjoy hearing people fight over trivial, mundane things like that, than this show might be for you. But for the other 99.5% of the population, viewing "Judge Judy" throws us into a world of stupifying boredom. I rather watch "The Bridges of Madison County" than sit through one episode of Judge Judy. Even sitting and staring at the wall is more entertaining than Judge Judy. Its very boring to watch. Its a torture show.

(Hide Review...)  Judge Judy is a PRIME Example of what's WRONG with America!!
Reviewer Permalink
At some point in the past, when I actually used to LIKE this HORRIBLE & ELITIST sorry excuse for a judge, I used to own this appalling book.

Now, if I even still have this excrement, it is probably in a moldy box somewhere in my basement, collecting dust. I don't know for sure, I haven't read it - or wanted to in years.

Judge Judy is a PERFECT example of what's wrong with America!

I mean, here we have a woman, who gets $25 MILLION A YEAR for doing practically NOTHING, while MILLIONS of Americans are struggling to make ends meet, working 2 or even 3 jobs, and still having to often make agonizing decisions like having to choose between buying food, paying rent and utilities, or buying medicine. Millions of hard-working Americans can't afford health insurance, and then are snowed under and utterly devastated by medical bills when disaster strikes.

All at the same time, a WHINY, SELFISH WITCH (substitute the word that rhymes with witch) sits on her throne, making a yearly salary that would probably support at least 50 people for a year, if not more, or longer.

In the beginning, when I actually liked Judy Sheindlin, it was because I approved of her get-tough stance on crime. It wasn't until I really read through this book and watched her on TV interviews and her own show, that I started to realize what a hypocritical fraud Judy Sheindlin really is.

Seriously, if you want a tough judge with integrity, and compassion, who is caring, fair, and humane, look at Judge Glenda Hatchett, who has a show "Judge Hatchett".

Judge Hatchett is just as tough on juvenile delinquents and other offenders, as Judge Judy, but UNLIKE Judy, it is obvious that she actually cares about people and helping those on the wrong track to turn their lives around.

Furthermore, her compassion extends well beyond the bench. A case in point.........

In an incident that occurred in June of 2004, Judge Hatchett was on a flight from Atlanta to New York when she met a couple whose daughter had been shot in New York. Without any judgements, Judge Hatchett helped these parents, taking them to the hospital in her limo.

Compare that to Judge Judy.

In one of her books (possibly this one?) Judy tells of an incident where she encountered a homeless person on the street begging for money. She responded by going to a local restaurant and buying a cup of coffee and a tuna fish sandwich, and giving it to the panhandler. When the panhandler responded by saying that they needed money, not a sandwich and coffee, Judy berated the person, telling them that she was not going to pay for their drug habit, and walked away.

What makes Judge Judy think that ALL homeless people are alcoholics or drug addicts??

Maybe a high percentage of them are. But NOT ALL! There are a lot of people in this country - all over the world, as a matter of fact, who aren't so lucky to be able to earn 25 MILLION dollars a year just for sitting on a throne and throwing insults at various people.

A lot of homeless and poverty-stricken people are HARD-WORKING people who's were just blindsided by tragic circumstances - downsizing, medical bills, divorce, etc. Just because a person is homeless does NOT automatically mean that they are drug addicts.

In fact, studies show that a large proportion of the homeless population are children.

Others, who while not legally considered "children", are still immature in many ways, like the MILLIONS of foster care kids who have "aged out of the system". After years of being shuffled around from home to home, without any stability, steady school attendance and minimal (if any) academic and/or vocational skills and training, at the age of 18, these kids are left out in the cold. On their 18th birthday, they are sent out into the world, with no transitional or follow-up support services - just a pat on the head and a kick out the door. Is it any wonder that a large proportion of foster children end up homeless, underemployed or unemployed, or worse in jail or dead??

This book is one long rant against the less fortunate in society.

It's shocking and sickening that this woman was allowed to be a lawyer, and a Family Court Judge with the outrageous way that she talks about violating the Constitution, like eliminating Public Defenders and forcing the destitute to pay for their own lawyers.

People who can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars an hour to an attorney have still the right to a FAIR TRIAL!!

Having an attorney, regardless of ability to pay, is a right, even guaranteed by the Miranda rights.

Who does this holier-than-thou person think she is?? Judge Judy" is totally condescending, inappropriate, and generally infuriating.

I am ashamed of the type of vigilante law she brags about. She has NO qualms about denying people their constitutional rights that our forefathers fought for and died over, that even today our soldiers are fighting and dying for.

Judy seems to have the idea that anyone who aren't RICH white, educated, upper-middle class professionals, are some kind of animal who needs to be "whipped into shape." This kind of ethnocentricism is just horrifying especially that its perpetrated by someone who has been on the bench.

Judy Sheindlin is an elitist snob, sitting there in her many mansions while the rest of us peons have to struggle for basic needs like food, shelter, and medical care, and THEN have the audacity to claim that poverty-stricken people should have to choose between food, or medicine, and getting fair legal representation??

Judge Hatchett is a MILLION times better judge than Judge Judy. Even on her show, Judge Judy's rulings are ridiculous, and hardly ever (if ever) based in reality or actual law. The only time I watch is to make fun of her, and her stupid sayings.

But even her sayings show her callousness compared to Judge Hatchett, who has her own sayings, which show how caring and compassionate she is.

Compare Judge Judy's "Does it say STUPID here??" to Judge Hatchett's "I'm going to be watching you & I'm pulling for you!". Or compare Judge Judy's "I'm the Boss, Applesauce" to Judge Hatchett's "You need a Reality Check."

Judy Sheindlin is a joke and this book is quite frightening. She advocates killing CHILDREN who commit murder, regardless of the circumstances or their ages, because in her words "...it doesn't matter if your murderer is fifteen or fifty you're just as dead".

This sorry excuse for a book with an excretory title never rises above this level, but sinks far below it.

If you want to see a TOUGH Judge who really Cares, watch Judge Hatchett, and stay away from Judge Judy and her dangerous books.

Meanwhile, we should stick with the title Judy Sheindlin has chosen, and call this book for what it is. A load of excrement.

AVOID THIS BOOK & JUDGE JUDY!!!!

People don't like Judge Judy because she's a "b" or a tyrant. As an ER doctor, I can tell you that what she really is: fed up. Both of us are tired of the vast amount of human garbage we deal with on a daily basis. What is the common factor amongst all these people?

The unwillingness to take *personal responsibility* for your own life.

Simple.

This book is a great collection of situations and solutions for those who cannot manage to wade through the mire of moral choices they are faced with. It's also immensely amusing and right on target.

You will find yourself nodding and laughing. Perhaps you will even wonder why this has to be written down in a book...when it's all just common sense. This is a great present and a quick read. Read her other books as well.

Consider the new lawyer in a trial court for the first time. After three years of legal study that consisted in large part of reading appellate case law written by learned and brilliant judges (or at least written by their learned and brilliant law clerks), the novice could not be faulted for expecting erudition and brilliance from the trial bench. Granted, most trial court judges are smart and work hard. They are, after all, in the trenches. But there is a significant minority who are neither. In jurisdictions that elect judges it is quite possible for a party hack with a law degree to be rewarded with a judgeship after years of loyal service to the party in power. In jurisdictions that appoint judges, connections are all and friendship and favor can trump qualifications. For some reason, the least qualified, the dumbest, and the laziest of this group seem to be the ones most susceptible to Black Robe Fever, a disease that afflicts its victims with delusions of grandeur and also instills the curious notion that their IQ has just doubled by dint of their ascension to the bench. The constitution and the rules of evidence are just so much excess baggage to these folks, since they are infallible, know what's right and holy, and have an unerring instinct for the "right" outcome of the case before them. Now consider our newly-minted lawyer in the courtroom of such a judge as she admonishes people not to [...] on her, abuses litigants, yuks it up with her toady of a bailiff, and generally squats on centuries of Anglo-American jurisprudence. Cruella DeVil with a gavel, only a lot homlier. Do you think the new lawyer, probably staggering under a mountain of student-loan debt, is wondering if it's too late to get into the family business?

Judge Judy is a joke and so is this book. Her prescription for the child who kills is to kill the child since "...it doesn't matter if your murderer is fifteen or fifty you're just as dead". Since public defenders, those selfless lawyers who don't view a law license as a license to print money, since public defenders, in their zeal to protect the constitutional rights of their clients, the downtrodden and the indigent, since these Defenders used to stand in Judge Judy's way-back when she was a real judge-they should be eliminated and poor people charged with a crime left to fend for themselves. What passes for discourse and logic in this screeching book with the excretory title never rises above this level but often sinks beneath it. Let's stick with the author's preferred imagery-bodily waste-and call this book what it is because it stinks to high heaven.

OK, for anyone out there who is tired of people who make excuses, people who can not take responsibility for their own actions, and people who use and abuse the system, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!

Judy Sheindlin takes the same approach in this book as she does on her TV show. No punches are pulled and no one is spared as Judge Judy lashes out in a strong argument against the types of people mentioned in the above paragraph.

For instance, Judy insists that America's legal system must crack down on juvenile offenders, especially the repeat ones. Many Americans, myself included, are fed up with the way criminals have life easy, and people that make their living as parasites off of a welfare system that taxpayers fund.

This book may cause some readers to write to their Congressman and demand that as an American citizen, and honest, hard-working taxpayer, these criminals (I'm encompassing all the people in Judy's book) must be stopped and common sense must have a place in the life of government and society.

Judge Judy, once again, tells it like it is. If you've seen her on TV then you know exactly that she's no pushover. A lot of "bleeding hearts" would never agree with her statements, but I was pleased to read that someone has the courage to stand up and say that things need to change. Being a family court judge, she's seen it all. Women abusing the welfare system by having numerous kids, men hiding from paying child support, people on welfare refusing to work on the basis that it is "below them" and so many other mini case studies fill this book.
I say "Judge Judy for President!!"

I'm so happy Judge Judy came out with this book. Not only does it offer excellent pointers for our lacky government, she gives tips for new lawyers and judges. I'm in college waiting to go to law school, and this book should be required for every class. We can all learn from Judy on what's needed in our judicial system that other judges are lacking. Her suggestions to improve our system make a lot of sense. For example, she believes that once a foster care home is financially stable that we should cut off the money limit we send them. Instead of wasting tax payers money with counselors that aren't needed, let's make sure the housing situation is fine and then stop using our money for waste. If Judge Judy runs for president, she has my vote! YOU GO JUDY YOU ARE MY HERO!!!!!

I don't normally read books that are ghostwritten. This one, however, was not only informative but wildly entertaining. See Judge Judy skewer self-proclaimed victims, lazy attorneys, callous bureaucrats, unwed teen mothers, craven foster parents, and in general anyone who while serving themselves degrades the lives we all lead in this land of ours.

The only negative I can think of is that, too often, points that need more detail end up as truncated sound bites. By making her points as succinctly as possible, Judge Judy has justifiably won for herself quite a following -- although the book's trenchant style is not dissimilar to her TV appearances, so I can't blame the ghost writer. I guess I'm just too much of a detail wonk to feel comfortable with short shrift on major subjects. Give me facts, footnotes, and all those other scholarly trappings that take me beyond the level of the merely anecdotal.

But this book is not meant for people like me, though I can enjoy it as much as anyone. Judge Judy's elevation of COMMON SENSE to a principle of jurisprudence is guaranteed to make you think, even if it doesn't satisfy all bases.

I have to admit that I am in complete agreement with Judge Judy. She is a tough talking, no nonsense, commom sense oriented individual, who believes in personal responsibility and acountability. What you see on the television screen, if you watch her show "Judge Judy", is what you find between the cover of this book.

The book covers a variety of social issues in the context of her legal and judicial experience, and she does a full court press in giving her opinions. Not given to judicial restraint, she speaks out on those issues to which her nearly quarter of a century experience as a judge has entitled her. I only wish that she were running for public office. She would certainly have my vote.

The only issue that I take with the book is that it is really not a cohesive entity. It is a somewhat disjointed collection of essays or opinions on various social issues that repeatedly came up during her years on the bench. There is no attempt to put them together into a broader context, so that one segues into the next. This is the one shortcoming of the book. Nonetheless, it is still an interesting read.

Judge Judy, labelled as America's toughest family court judge, tells us in her book some amusing and amazing stories that she has witnessed in her long career as a family court judge. Eloquent with her words, illustrative with her stories and thought provoking with her insights, Judge Judy's values are simple: "Take responsibility for your actions." She says "If you want to eat, you have to work. If you have children, be prepared to take care of them. If you brake the law, be prepared to pay." She finishes her book by also saying that "the Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to pursue opportunity. It does not require the government to provide that opportunity." Wow...what a judge and what a book.

What's included is good, and Judy has a lot of ideas about judicial reform in America. Some of the cases she reflects back on are horrifying. However, there's too much of the same thing. Judy writes much like she talks on TV...it's entertaining and so forth, but on paper it gets tiring after awhile. I got about halfway through the book and then said to myself, "Okay, I get the picture," and then decided not to read further. This might be a good book to put online sometime.

Judge Judy is tought but she is right. Until we hold people responsible for their actions, many of our social problems will continue to get worst. Why work when you can make a decent living compliments of the tax payer. This book open my eyes to the fleecing of America.

Judge Judy has something very few people serving in the government have... a sense of responsibility and good old fashioned common sense. If you're tired of having your tax money wasted and frittered by scammers and laziness read this book... you won't be disappointed.

I love Judge Judy. She is the most fearless and intelligent judge on TV. She is beautiful and passionate and knows how to make a strong decision. Her book was fantastic! I reccomend it to any serious law student. I hope that I grow up to be just like Judge Judy. Bert is pretty nifty too.

(Hide Review...)  Entertaining but disturbing view of "justice"
Reviewer Permalink
This is an entertaining read about a feisty, energetic, and committed woman, who would be totally admirable if it were not for the disquieting view of justice she holds. The cases seem to be very often decided without sufficient, or indeed any, evidence from unbiased third parties, and without any safeguards against her own personal prejudices. As a reviewer, it is not my place to say that any paricular judgement is wrong, but, in view of the apparent arbitrariness and weighting of the scales against "abnormals", it would not surprise me to see at least 60% of verdicts overturned in a higher court. Her admittedly entertaining rhetoric and repartee can often seduce the "audience" into an "us vs. them" frame of mind, an effect which she has consciously magnified by allowing televization. Something is seen to be done: but is it justice? A dangerous precedent in my opinion.

I have read Judge Judy's book from the library and now am going to purchase a copy not only for myself but for Christmas gifts. I have worked in the legal system for ten years and people didn't believe that the things Judge Judy brought to light really took place. Even more frustrating was to see how "juris prudence" handled some of the worst courtroom etrocities with kid gloves. I have the utmost respect for the Honorable Judge Sheindlin. She has the unique ability to combine extraordinary insight, intellect, compassion, legal expertise, and COMMON SENSE. She also has the answers for our dysfunctional society. Please read this book and pass it along. We'll all benefit. As my ten-year-old puts it, "Judge Judy kicks bootie!" Judge Judy...Encore!!!

(Hide Review...)  An inappropriate plan based on thoroughly biased views

Although I found some of the anecdotal information in the book interesting and informative, overall I found "Judge Judy" to be condescending, inappropriate, and generally infuriating.

I have two major problems with the content of this book, which is obviously written for laypersons with no knowledge of the legal system.

First, all her observations are based on anecdotal encounters with people IN COURT. Has it occured to anyone else that, while there are always people who scam the system or are dishonest, that MOST PEOPLE DON'T END UP IN COURT?!? Therefore, all her observations are biased because she never sees the people who don't have some problem that lands them in front of a judge.

And secondly, I am ashamed of the type of vigilant law she brags about. Denying people their constitutional rights and supplementing the information in a case with rumors from the legal community are only two examples of ways in which she ultimately undermines the basic ! principles of our judicial system. She seems to have the idea that anyone who doesn't model their lives after what white, educated, upper-middle class professionals believe is appropriate, must be some kind of animal who needs to be "whipped into shape." I find this ethnocentricism sickening. While I'm grateful that she is no longer ruining people's lives in Family Court, I am not happy that a whole generation of vigilanty right-wing legal buffs is being bred in living rooms across the country.

Judge Judy tells it like it is. Welfare should be a hand up, not a handout. It's meant to be a This is an excellent book. It's about time someone had the guts to tell it like it is. Welfare should be a temporary solution to a temporary problem, not a way of life. Welfare reform is finally coming to Virginia and none too soon. However, I'm waiting to see when my taxes will be reduced because of the reduced welfare rolls. Let's just say I'm not holding my breath.

People know at last that judges are human beings and care very much about the litigants.
A part of the judge's work is to care about the money people pay as taxes.

If you want to know what`s wrong with the familycourt system, this is what to read. Judges areappointed as political favor without an ounce of common sense, let alone wisdom. Sheindlin comes across as sexist, classist, arrogant and right= wing as in court when she had power to destroy innocent children's lives; thankfully she's now been reduced to "writing" (with professional help) and "trying" dog bite cases oncourt TV. It's justice of a sort, too late for too many kids.
