(Hide Review...)  A nice substitute to the magazine
Reviewer Permalink
I was sad to see Domino magazine end. I suppose in this economy it's to be expected. Anyway, I haven't gotten a new subscription to a magazine, but I am buying decor books now. Domino isn't as flashy or modern or even innovative as some of my other books... but it's pretty good. A bit messy chic, like the mags or an Anthropologie store, but comforting and with easy to follow tips. I like it.

For starters, I purchased this book on Amazon because it is way cheaper here than in a specialty store. I love the layout of this book, it's very informative with lots of beautiful photographs and illustrations. I definitely recommend it if you like creative, somewhat vintage and antique with a little contemporary all mixed in one. If you didn't know anything about decorating before, you should know plenty after picking this up!

This book is incredible. Really comprehensive, beginning with a fabulous gameplan for starting your decoration or redecoration process. I particularly appreciate the room made for those of us with smaller budgets (especially the save/splurge encouragement). And being that I'm just learning how to describe my style, I loved the authors titles of each room, as well as the mix and match ideas. Finally, a lot of the designs are timeless, lending this book to a long and happy shelf life.

The author of the only one-star review does not like anything! Take this book for what it is -- a primer on decorating. It's a great beginner's design book. It has a broad range of ideas to emulated. The photos are on par with most design books.

(Hide Review...)  An Everything Book for Decorating--
Reviewer Permalink
For those of use who look forward to receiving home decorating magazines in the mail each month, and reading Thursday's Home and Garden section in the New York Times each week, Domino: The Book of Decorating is a special treat. There are thousands of photos, illustrations and hints inside, all culled from the magazine's pages and true to its fresh, eclectic sensibility. It's the kind of book that you can't get enough of, that you pull off the shelf and pore over again and again.

The book is organized into chapters that guide the reader through house design room-by-room, from dining room and living room to office and kid's room. But it's most useful as a compendium of smaller design solutions, as a pattern book full of examples for someone putting together an interior. There's information on every page that answers simple questions. Does a room painted charcoal grey feel dark? Do they make two-burner cooktops? Is it garish to use more than one patterned rug in the same room? And there's information on every page that opens new possibilities. Can one wallpaper a ceiling? Can one install 1 hexagonal ceramic tile on a bathroom wall? Can one hang unframed photographs on a wall? The answer to all these and many other questions, happily, is yes.

Domino's decorating guide, not much larger than a hardcover novel, is packed with sharp design ideas. If someone is just getting serious about decorating or remodeling her home, and searching for a single source of information and inspiration, this volume might be the perfect kick-off point for her adventure.

My husband and I were tired of living like grad students, so I bought this book. I never read the magazine and knew NOTHING about decorating. Somehow, after flipping through it a few times, I felt confident to attack the apartment. One month later, we now live like adults, and I love coming home to our organized home with real furniture. I found the book so accessible and sensible in terms of costs (no telling me to drop a couple grand on an armchair or whatever... unless I want to) and effort (no one suggesting I retile my own floor).

I can't speak for people who already know what they're doing in terms of interior design, but for a novice like me, this book has been worth every penny.

A great reference for room-to-room design with ideas for making your spaces both colorful, creative and personal. I liked that the approach isn't likely to produce too many generic 'out-of-the-box' rooms for those who take it's lessons to heart! Bravo!!

"Domino: The Book of Decorating" contains sensible, practical advice on how to create a room that matches *your* style. When it first came out a lot of people reviewed it poorly because it was a "rehash" of images previously shown in Domino magazine. Now that Domino is dead, I only wish the book had contained even more images so that I'd have them to refer back to.

Since I got this book at Christmas, I have read it cover to cover, put it away for a few days, picked it up again, re-read a chapter, put it away, picked it up, browsed through pictures, put it on the kitchen table, re-read another section...you get the picture. I cannot recall having EVER looked at the same book so many times. Thank you Deborah Needleman - may the gods strike down Conde Nast for cancelling Domino. It was a GEM!

(Hide Review...)  Good intro to home decorating - but perhaps one for the girls
Reviewer Permalink
I have a semi-professional interest in design and a very large collection of interior design books, but my husband has never looked through any of them with anything but cursory interest...until he saw this one. "It's quite good this", he said, which is high praise indeed from a Yorkshireman.

The Domino book is unusual because it features homes with normal (ie small) domestic proportions, is full of images that include unremarkable furniture from multiple periods (ie how real people live, with a mixture of scavenged, inherited and bought bits and pieces, not an array of expensive "design classics"), and solves practical problems (a baby's bedroom that doesn't look like Toys R Us; what to do if your dining table is not to your taste but too good to give away).

As another reviewer has mentioned, the book has a great double page spread in each section which uses key images to help you define your style, so you can choose furniture and fittings accordingly.

Finally, because the 1930s and 1940s were the golden age of American building, there are also some excellent ideas for kitchens and bathrooms of that period. No UK designer seems remotely interested in the humble interwar semi, and so there is a real lack of styling information for people wanting to avoid wholesale modernisation - amazingly, this US import could be just the job to help fill the gap.

I have taken one star off because the featured interiors do favour a very distinctive style, loosely summarised as "colourful/eclectic/timeless" - this is very much my own taste, but may be a little too hokey and feminine for some readers.

This book is incredible! There is a guide on every type of furniture, paint colors, different styles, and just about everything design-related you can think of. There are so many different styles represented and many rooms that show a blend of different styles to give the reader a good vision of what goes together, why, and what does not. My favorite part of this book is the little glimpse into a certain room which includes that the inspiration was, what pieces the person already had and wanted to use, and then what they bought to add and why. I am only in college right now, but I dream all the time of my first place when I can actually own my own place instead of renting. This book will come in very handy when that day comes, but until then I love looking at it and marking pages to add to my inspiration folder!

Reviewer Permalink
I own hundreds of interior design and decor books and if I could only keep 5 of them, this would be one of the top 5 interior decoration books. Why?

It's thoroughly up-to-date with styles which will inspire and stretch you, while retaining some classic styles. It's a great how-to book. It shows you how to put rooms together with different elements. The rooms are original and captivating. It has a "little black book" at the end of places to buy the design elements in person or online with a review of each and its price scale. It's just a fun, cheeky book that is well-designed and entertaining to look at and read. It continually surprises and enchants. I use this book in a design course I teach and the class loves it. Even if you like traditional decor, this book will inspire you to keep it fresh by incorporating something surprising or unusual just so the room doesn't look like every other traditionally designed room.

I just wish Domino magazine hadn't gone out of business, and like Victoria magazine, will be revived when the recession is over and we're all buying back copies of domino magazine on Ebay....

Until then, at least we've got this domino book with which to comfort ourselves!

I absolutely loved Domino magazine, which, earlier this year, was a casualty of the recession and lagging publication sales. While I'm still not quite over the death of my favorite magazine, this book (and the back issues!) provide some solace. This book seems made by a bunch of (pretentious) college kids who think their "decorated" dorms look wonderfully sophisticated. (I wonder how old the people who gave it 5 stars are...) It is a collection of pretentious, childish pictures. The vignettes (or whatever the little descriptive texts are called) are right on top of the pictures, cutting most in half and making it really annoying. Also pictures are of very low quality, with too much light and too small. To make a long story short, a very bad little book. I wish I could give this book half star.

You get photos of beautiful rooms as inspiration and all kinds of design tips. There is also a great list or resources at the back of the book. I also really love the size of the book. I have been reading Domino since the beginning. It is the only magazine I subscribe to without fail. However, I do not clip out images or articles to save (i have a problem getting rid of paper, so I nip it in the butt before it's out of control). This book solved the dilemma of wanting to save pieces of the magazine, but not wanting to hold on to scraps of paper. It's like a "Best Of" version. Somehow almost every picture or article I have been drawn to in the mag is here, like they read my mind.

I do wish they had a more style pages... they come up with great labels of style, not just the usual Hollywood Regency crap so prevalent in Elle Decor. Like edgy classic. Or brave bohemian. you get the point. I like the way they categorize things, I just wish there was more.

Drives me CRAZY that almost all the resources in the back of the book are only in New York. I'm in Los Angeles, can't you at least give the west coast a quarter of love?

Anyway, the pictures are beautiful, they have great floor plan ideas, spot on tips for types of furniture, and how-to's for merging aesthetics and functionality (in my opinion, that's the most important).

It's so good, I already bought a second one for my friend.

I love this book for various reasons:

1) Well structured - starts off with a "how to get started", followed by one chapter for each key room in the house, concludes with guides on resources
2) Each section boils down certain aspect to general terms that are very helpful with your own designs (e.g. shapes of sofas)
3) Great photos
4) Different styles covered in each section

I disagree with a previous reviewer who states that this is only for young people in their 20's - it may not be a book for someone who likes very traditional designs but I would not put any age restriction on it. If you like to have a bit of fun with your designs you will like this book.

One thing I want to make sure that you understand before you buy this book - this is not a shopping guide that gives you details on where to buy particular pieces which you might expect when you are a subscriber to Domino magazine. So you get ideas from this book but will have to do your own research where to find the pieces that fit your budget (which is half of the fun of it - don't you think!)

This book will get your creative juices flowing and if that is what you are looking for, I highly recommend it as a staple for your own library and as a go-to-gift.

As almost all reviewers have noted, the Domino style is pretty consistent-clean, colorful, eclectic, nothing fussy unless it is tongue-in-cheek over-the-top Baroque. I love the magazine, so I loved the book. I would have appreciated a chapter with photos of a few complete homes, so you could see how the owners made an entire apartment or house look cohesive. If you don't know the magazine, visit their website, [...]. Also, I'd check out [...] . The creator of that site started out with a small book, Apartment Therapy, about his design philosophy, how to streamline spaces in an 8 week exercise, etc. His newer book is Apartment Therapy Presents, with lots of photos and tips, etc. His website features photos of the readers' homes, and great shopping and design tips.

This book has it all - ideas for those on a budget to those who can spend whatever and when they want, and you will never run out of ideas, only time!

I highly recommend this book for amateurs AND professionals looking to be even more creative with clients and even themselves.

Rather than being overwhelming, the colorful and easy-to-follow steps make the process much more delightful for those with little training and less natural ability.

While the book has great resources, including examples of window treatments and upholstery and a detailed resource section, the one missing piece that would be invaluable to the true novice is a glossary. Point number 2 in Getting Started in the book tells you to determine your style and uses terms such as bohemian, traditional, sentimental, and theatrical. For those with NO introduction to style and decorating, these words are meaningless without some background or specifics, making self-definition difficult. Running into this wall at the beginning of the book might discourage some readers. A simple glossary of such terms would help.

domino: The Book of Decorating is subtitled "a room-by-room guide to creating a home that makes you happy".
If you have never set up a home space before, you can use this book as an all encompassing workbook. Simply proceed chapter by chapter and you will be supplied with options from which to choose, and tips for choosing among them.
Collecting, mixing and matching, how to get premium function from minimal space, furniture, practical decor and tricks for renters, when I say all encompassing, I'm not falling victim to hyperbole.
It's a plus that the book is basically organized room by room, rather than into overall style sections. That makes it super easy if you only want to look at ideas for bedrooms, a home office, etc.
If you are experienced at creating a home from a house (or apt.) you will still love checking out the abundant detail found in the multitude of photographs, each with its own tip, technique, or revelation box. Even avid readers of Domino will appreciate the further consideration of
set-ups they may have seen in issues of the magazine, and there are definitely legions of us who never saw all the issues. This book would make an excellent gift for anyone moving into a new house or redecorating their old.
