Rather small and outdated for the price. The majority of the information in the book is nothing that you wouldn't find yourself just by searching on the Internet- for free. Sort of a disappointment really. I was so looking forward to receiving this book and then changing our dogs' diets but the diet plan in here is extremely vague. Look elsewhere for info if your dog has Cushings or SARDS.

I bought the book for my dad whose favorite dog was recently diagnosed with diabetes. It didn't sound like his Vet had given him much information beyond the most basic information (give the dog a shot at this time every day). My dad says the book answers many of his questions and provides him with the information he needs to understand the condition and properly care for his dog.

I purchased this book because my dog was diagnosed with Cushings Disease. It had some helpful information on the disease. I found some really good information on diet even if your dog is healthy. Diet really does make a huge difference even in healthy dogs. Since following some of the suggestions both of my dogs seem much healthier and shedding has decreased tremendously.

This is the 2nd copy of this book I've purchased. I can't keep it in my library because it is always out on loan to someone. It provides such good information to help people understand these diseases and how to handle them. This copy is going in our "Rescue" library so that it is available to anyone who adopts from us. (Westie Rescue) A must for any dog owner.

I am a veterinary assistant, but by no means an expert on diabetes in dogs. My heart sank when one of my dogs was diagnosed with diabetes with an initial glucose level of 570. I was shocked, since she was neither overweight, was on a high fiber diet, plenty of exercise and is a mutt. We were in good shape.
As soon as she was diagnosed with diabetes I purchased this book and have to say it was a God sent. It took away my fears of her not being able to live a normal , active, happy life. It is very reassuring to know that Caroline Levin is a registered nurse and most of all has had the experience of having had a dog with diabetes. She has done all the research for us with dogs with Diabetes, Panceatitis, Cushing's Disease etc.. This book is so comprehensive that it answered all of my questions. My dog is happy and active and with a few lifestyle changes we are in good shape again. Thank you Ms. Levin for sharing your knowledge and experience. Informative book especially for someone who has a dog with one of the abovementioned diseases. It helped me understand more about diabetes and what I should do to best take care of my dog.

Having just been diagnosed this year with diabetes, my beloved Coco and I were struggling with the newness of our changed routine, diet, schedule etc. This book helped educate me and put it all in perspective and find the right program for Coco.
Understanding led to action which led to strength and control of our new situation. A must read for all canine diabetes families. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-14 00:26:56 EST)

My dog, Scout, was diagnosed with SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration) so I ordered this book along with "Living With Blind Dogs". That one helped with day-to-day issues, but "Dogs, Diet, and Disease" really helped with the health problems that came along with SARDS. We followed the author's suggestions for a more natural diet and lifestyle, and a few months later we did the lab tests recommended by the author and started hormone replacement therapy. What a difference it made! Scout's vision didn't change, but I have my old dog back. No more depression! A normal appetite! This is the only book to my knowledge that discusses SARDS, offers scientific research, and a plan of care for these dogs. My vet read it too. We're both big fans!

This is by far the most comprehensive book for dog owners on the topics of Cushing's Disease, Diabetes Mellitus, and Pancreatitis that I have ever seen! Ms. Levin's professional background as a Registered Nurse with experience in endocrinology has enabled her to explain the illnesses in clear detail, and to educate owners on how they can better care for their dogs at home. This book covers much more than any vet could during an office visit, in language that is compassionate, supportive, and helpful.
Her detailed discussion of various diet options, including commercial dog food, home-cooked, and fresh raw diets, displays her wealth of knowledge on the connection between diet and health. Her carefully worded and illustrated instructions on measuring blood glucose levels at home and giving insulin injections will help even the most nervous owner learn to care for a diabetic dog. I wish this book had been available when my beloved Boston Terrier, Halley, was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease 5 years ago. But having read it now, I feel well-prepared to care for another dog with one of these illnesses, if the need should arise. I hope that veterinarians will recognize the value of this book, even if they don't agree with everything Ms. Levin has to say (and some will not), and recommend it to their clients to enable dialog that will lead to better health care for chronically ill dogs. I certainly recommend it to all dog owners, as a good reference for preventing illness as well as coping with illness. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-07-07 18:01:17 EST)
