Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

The highly anticipated sequel to the #1 NEW YORK TIMES bestselling book!

Secrets have a way of getting out, especially when a diary is involved.

Whatever you do, don?t ask Greg Heffley how he spent his summer vacation, because he definitely doesn?t want to talk about it.

As Greg enters the new school year, he?s eager to put the past three months behind him . . . and one event in particular.

Unfortunately for Greg, his older brother, Rodrick, knows all about the incident Greg wants to keep under wraps. But secrets have a way of getting out . . . especially when a diary is involved.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules chronicles Greg?s attempts to navigate the hazards of middle school, impress the girls, steer clear of the school talent show, and most important, keep his secret safe.

My son is going into 3rd grade and I tried all sorts of books to grab his interest and get him reading, this one did it, he reads this at night and when I go in to say lights out he pleads to read a few more pages. He laughs and reads me parts that he thinks are funny - enough said!!

I recently gave two of these books to an 8-year old boy. He loves reading and devoured these books in a couple of days. He stayed up with the proverbial lamp under the covers the first night to finish the first book. He loved the books.

I borrowed this book from my public library and I was at first impressed with the little pictures and the layout of the book which really made it inviting to read. However, on reading it, I don't think there is anything really interesting about this book. It's not even that funny to me. I did read the whole book though. I have a better recommendation. Try « The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole » by Sue Townsend. There is about three in the series and while the first one was written in the 1980s and makes references to UK society and culture, it is a much more sophisticated read and a lot more funny, sad, etc. The Adrian Mole diaries begins when Adrian is 13 and 3/4 years old so a little bit older than Greg but not much more.

Two-star rating overall. Could be a lot more interesting.

I bought this book for my 6 year old son, who has just gotten comfortable reading real books. Staying focused for sustained periods of time remains a problem for a young kid of his age, so the books have to be exceptionally engaging to hold him still long enough.

This is one of the rare few books that passed the mark. My son was giggling nonstop through the pages. Although he is too young to get all the jokes by himself, with my occasional help, he is able to fully enjoy it.

Greg Heffley is back in another round of journal entries profusely illustrated with comics. Greg has plenty to gripe about, starting with his summer. His dad insisted he join the swim team, where he finally got over hiding from the starter gun bullet but managed to stay the worst swimmer on the team --- an experience that was "worse than being in middle school." One problem was that, because of the women's Water Jazz exercise class, the team had to swim in just two lanes. Another was that Greg had to wear his big brother Rodrick's outgrown skimpy Speedos, although his teammates got to wear trunks. How much did Greg hate being on the swim team? He actually tried to talk his dad into letting him join the Water Jazz exercisers instead.

The main thorn in Greg's side, though, is Rodrick. Rodrick is the drummer in the band called "Loded Diper." He makes Greg sit crammed with the band equipment in the back of the ancient Loded Diper van when he drives Greg home from swim team practice. Finally, Greg comes up with a foolish --- I mean "foolproof" --- plan to get out of practice, but it involves being wrapped like a mummy in toilet paper.

The swim team experience, plus the fact that Greg's best friend, Rowley, is gone all summer, makes going back to school an anticipated event --- but afterward all is still far from rosy in Greg's world. He and Rodrick fight so much that their little brother, Manny, draws a picture at day care featuring two big heads fighting while a small one cries. Although Greg's mom and dad believe it's of them and so act unrelentingly fond of each other around Manny, Greg knows that Manny's picture is actually of his big brothers arguing. The boys cannot get along but are forced by their parents to spend time together. For instance, they wash the dishes together...during which Rodrick always leaves for an urgent and prolonged call of nature.

Unfortunately for Greg, Rodrick has the goods on him. Rodrick is capable of blackmailing Greg about his most humiliating secret, so Greg can't ever tell on him. Greg wants to find out something embarrassing about Rodrick, but in the meantime watches his parents' maneuverings. His mom wants his dad to watch romantic comedies with her, but his dad only really wants to hide out in the basement to work on his miniature Civil War battlefield, resulting in a bit of a battlefield at the Heffley residence.

Greg is also chagrined to have to hear every single detail of Rowley's summer vacation trip to South America, which bores him senseless but causes girls to gather maddeningly around Rowley. He manages to stay busy with practical jokes, along with the consequent visits to the principal's office. He also figures out a great way to cheat at school, but his plan will only work if he has a glass eye. When he finally discovers a secret worth blackmailing Rodrick about, Greg takes notice.

RODRICK RULES --- the sequel to the New York Times bestseller DIARY OF A WIMPY KID --- is another enjoyable saga in Greg's life, which will make readers of all ages laugh out loud at his escapades, along with the tweaked and quirky family relationships. (Gramma displays all of Manny's drawings, but also the note Greg wrote when he was six and angry at her: "I hate you, Gramma"; Grampa only watches his building's security camera feed on TV.) We're also treated to a delightful twist in the tale about Greg's big secret. Let's hope Greg's mom buys him another "Diary" soon!

I never know whether my son will like a book that I choose for him, or whether he would discard the book and return to his favorit addiction - his Nintendo DS. Diary of a Wimpy Kid arrived when I was at my office, and I gave him permission to open the Amazon package in that I knew what was inside. By the time I arrived home from my office, my son had not only begun reading the book, but he had actually finished the book!! His sitter stated that he pushed aside his video games and his Wii to read the book, cover to cover!!
Needless to say, I am thrilled with the book, my eight year old son enjoyed the story and the interation between the main character and his older brother. He had never read a book written as a "diary," and I was pleased with the way he adapted to the format. My son asked me whether there were more "Diary" books, so I also purchased the next book in the series. I highly recommend the book to anyone with a mature eight to 12 year old child in mind. (Is that an oxymoron?)

Second book in the Wimpy Kid series.

Greg is a middle school student who fills his diary with amusing illustrations and written descriptions of his day-to-day struggles with his family and friends. Greg's older brother, Rodrick, is holding a secret over Greg's head that remains a secret until teh very end of the book. Rodrick uses his secret to take advantage of Greg, but it works out okay in the end.

Very funny. Teens will be able to relate to Greg, who feels like a misfit much of the time, but manages to have some fun along the way.

(Hide Review...)  We're a sorry society
Reviewer Permalink
It dumb founds me that our society can give accolades to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, an embarrassing comic book. It's hard to believe that an adult man actually put pen to paper with this drivel. The book is full of whining, complaining, and disrespect. It would be one thing if the main character Greg, were to have an epiphany, but unfortunately this does not happen. When my wife asked my 8-year-old and 10-year-old son's, "If Greg were your brother would he get in trouble in our house for his behavior?". Both unequivocally answered "YES". When she asked "Would you like to have Greg for a brother?". They both said, "NO!".

We're in a society where most young people going into the workforce, think they're doing us a favor because they showed up, and were giving five stars to a book that tells them that this mentality is OK. In the messages to our youth today we see complete disrespect for oneself and everyone else around you, taking no responsibility for your behavior choices or the results of those choices, and generally teaching our children that foul mouths, lying, sarcasm, disrespect, whining, and complaining are all good things. You give your kids to someone else to watch most of the day, unlimited access to the Internet, video games, and other mindless and divisive media like this book, feed them full of Red Bull, Diet Coke, fast food, and frozen food, and you wonder why your children are such behavior problems. Does anyone understand the concept of raising their children? Does anyone understand critical thinking?

As a Cubmaster, baseball coach, and father of four boys, who range in age from young elementary school through late high school, all of whom read at four to six grades above their age level, are physically fit, spiritually grounded, excellent students, and respectful young men, with my oldest soon to be an Eagle Scout, I can tell you that the youth of today need far better guidance than they're getting, especially much better scrutiny by their parents of what goes into their bodies and minds.

Mr. Kinney, I find it deplorable that you want to jump on the bandwagon of encouraging this type of behavior in our youth and mentality in our society. To some this may seem like a harmless little book, but to me, The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, and many other books like it, serve as an indictment of our society for the moronic, disrespectful, self-centered level it has now stooped to. The intent of reading is to develop the mind. Instead, we're pushing for everything in our society to remain at a mere fourth-grade mentality level. I guess that's why they knew "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" would be such a success, because evidently, most of our society isn't. How sad.

My eldest son is a very reluctant reader. Even bribery can't convince him to open a book of his own accord. Since I am a bibliophile, this drives me insane. However, at Christmas he visited with a friend for a few days. This friend had received Diary of a Wimpy Kid for Christmas and my son read the whole thing while he was there. So, for his birthday, I purchased both the first and second books in this series. At first, he felt the present and said, "Oh, great, a book." Then, when he saw what books they were, he was thrilled.

I read the first one, shortly after hearing he had read it. I could understand the appeal. It is funny, easy-to-read and fully illustrated. Any pre-teen guy would love these books! Even grown men would probably get a kick out of reading these books! Too fun!!

(Hide Review...)  so-so, super silly, potty, nerdy, smile-out-loud funny humor of a geeky middle-schooler
Reviewer Permalink
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is not a diary but, in fact, a journal or "novel in cartoons." It covers one school year in the life of a geeky middle-school-aged boy named Greg, especially antics involving his equally unpopular friend, Rowley. The book is unique in format, but filled with Captain Underpants-like humor in its anecdotes about things the (mostly unsuccessful) quest for cool at school, friendship, and family. Certain parts, notably a standardized thank you note and an attempt at setting up a haunted house, were entertaining, but parents of younger readers might not be thrilled with bullying as a recurring theme and a handful of inappropriate words like "jerk," "sissy," "moron," and "dork," which make the nine to twelve year old recommended reading level seem appropriate. And although my favorite nine-year-old bookworm raced through it (and the sequel) and then started in on the first one again after requesting two milk bottles filled with sand and a stick, I was never able to muster more than a smile during the time (less than an hour) it took to get through it. From this reader's (adult) perspective, it's overrated, but to each his own. Similar: Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants series. For adults: Dave Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day. Better: The Dangerous Book for Boys by Hal Iggulden.

It's DIARY OF A WIMPY KID #2, and I can't wait to read #3. These books are fantastic. The tales and adventures of Greg Heffley and his creative illustrations are well worth your time.

Greg begins his second diary. He almost decided it wasn't worth it after Rodrick got his hands on the first diary, but once again he writes about his frustrations with his older brother, Rodrick, and his younger brother, Manny. Greg reveals all the embarrassing encounters involving his mother's determination to butt into his life. He also includes tales of his bumpy relationship with his best friend, Rowley.

Imaginative cartoon drawings combined with fresh, wacky humor make the DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES popular with even the most sophisticated readers in my middle school. Everyone considers it just plain fun to read. Anyone who is currently striving to survive middle school, or anyone who remembers the pain, is sure to appreciate the good-natured humor in Jeff Kinney's creative series.

School's starting again and Greg, Rodrick's younger brother (a.k.a., The Wimpy Kid) is starting his journal. You can't call it a diary because that's `girlie.

Greg, through his alter ego, a.k.a. author Jeff Kinney, is following up his New York Times Best Selling Diary of a Wimpy Kid with a story where his brother "rules." Created on wide lined paper with cartoon drawings throughout (some handsome; some not-so handsome, and the weird ones are easy to pick out).

This book has many possible markets: boys in this pre-teen age, their parents, men who want to reminisce how thrilled they are to have made it through junior high--and anyone else who wants to laugh out loud at the antics of this wimpy kid (your little brother, maybe?) Everyone who attended school can relate to him, some of us more so.

Before school journaling starts, Greg has to recount his summer, his friends and enemies--and he has lots of them. But then the first day of school starts with Greg's biggest fear is that the stupid thing he did in summer that ONLY brother Rodrick knows about, will be spread around school--the kiss of death.

Here are some of the common themes that I am sure are played out in families worldwide, as our siblings toughen us up for surviving life:

* Older siblings that taunt and blackmail you, and young ones who tell on you.
* Name calling and ugly nicknames.
* Older sibling's poor educational reputation passes down to you.
* Praying for school to be cancelled by weather because you don't have your report done.
* Dad/Mom `helping' with a report so you get a good grade--and maybe better than they ever got.
* Stupid things boys say/do that other boys think is cool-and girls hate.
* Your worst fear coming true, or not being as bad as you thought.

Near the end (p. 211) the book says, "So that just proves once and for all that Mom doesn't understand a THING about kids my age." Boy, isn't that the truth!

From the cover to the last page, author/cartoonist Kinney has captured our families and given us some deep and joyful laughs (especially if we and our kids survived that time). Kinney is an online game developer and designer when he isn't Greg's alter ego.

Armchair Interview says: Kids of all ages will enjoy this. Read the first book, too, and anticipate Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw.

I bought the 2-for-1 book listed with this, "Clive & Brie" by Norah S. Bernard, and I think anyone who enjoyed this would like that one, too. I highly recommend them both! Another book that is actually non-fiction, and not actually written for kids, but I think they would find it really good, too, is "Tales From Time-Out" by Henry J. Roth. He is a principal of a school for kids with behavior problems, and he has these conversations with the kids who are sent to time-out. Very funny, and each story is illustrated with cartoons.

I have a nine year old fourth grader who doesn't like to read. This series by Jeff Kinney is just the ticket for him. When we got this book he read the entire thing (224 pages) in less than 3 days! And when he was reading it during study hall at school, several of his classmates asked to borrow it when he was done.

For my grandson's 9th birthday I gave both of the Diary books. I also gave him a blank journal, just in case. It's now a month later and he told me he not only finished both books, he is writing and drawing in his journal. What a great inspiration for young children to be interested in writing stories. Three cheers to author, Jeff Kinny.

My son is 11 years old & really does not like to read for pleasure. He'll read exactly the bare minimum for school work & it's a super chore to get him to read in the summer. He devoured this book in just one afternoon. Plus, he has re-read the book a number of times. I highly reccomend it!

Our whole family loved the first Wimpy Kid Book so picking this one up was a no brainer. Rodrick Rules just didn't have as many laughs as the first volume. My son still tore through it, but he hasn't re-read it several times as he did Wimpy Kid 1. Not terrible, but not laugh out loud funny either.

I just happen to pick up this book for my son in the book store. After reading the first one in 2 days. He decided that he wanted the 2nd book and I ordered it from Amazon at a cheaper price. He is now waiting for the 3rd book. I am impressed with how much he is reading with chapter books.

(Hide Review...)  Anyone Whose Life Was "Ruined" by An Older Brother Must Read Rodrick Rules

Diary of a Wimpy Kid was a breakout success in bringing kid humor into classic situations and an appealing format. One of my concerns about reading Rodrick Rules was whether there would be enough classic kid problems to fill another book with side-splitting laughter. Well, some of the best gags are gone but some pretty good ones are left.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid featured humor built from not wanting to touch a piece of rotten cheese. There's no exact equivalent that's as funny Rodrick Rules, but the continuing saga of being dominated by an obnoxious older brother certainly will evoke memories and laughs among those who were a younger brother or the parent of two or more boys.

As in most families, both boys have something they can use to blackmail the other. But Rodrick is much better than Greg at fighting for dominance. What Rodrick has on Greg is truly funny, the sort of thing that would deeply embarrass any middle school boy.

There's lots of contact between the two boys because their parents want to bring them together. I could relate to the sorts of things I tried to use to create peace between two teenage boys . . . that didn't work.

One of the on-going gags involves Rodrick's band and his parents fear of where this could all lead. Any family that's ever had a garage or basement band will relate to this part of the book.

I was also amused to see the book address that perpetual middle school challenge . . . how to pass without doing any work.

This is great fun, just not as side-splitting as Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
