Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR (Text Revision)

The last 6 years has seen many advances in our knowledge of illnesses. The DSM-IV-TRV spans the bridge between DSM- IVV and DSM-VV to ensur e that the most relevant new information since the DSM- IVV literature review in 1992 was incorporated and to enhance the educational value. Specifically, new information on associated features, including asso ciated laboratory and physical findings, has been added for many of th e disorders. Sections on prevalence, gender/age/culture, course, and familial pattern have also been revised to reflect recent research fin dings. More comprehensive differential diagnoses have been incorporat ed for many of the disorders.

Reviewer Permalink
Psych is difficult to understand in it's complex levels. This book goes to some extremes, where it could have been easier to just simplify it. Some "DSM-IV" for dummies books do exactly that, making the whole thing a lot easier to comprehend and use. Overall, it's the standard knowledge base needed for any psychologist/health clinician.

One of the most, if not the most, debated publication in the field of psychology. Aka (by some) the clinian's bible. If you consider diagnosis and essential part of therapy, you would already have this book. If not, it (I consider) the DSM still provides useful guidelines in terms of treating patients with similar symptomologies, and the like. I find that the Diagnostic Statement is useful in summarizing an individuals circumstances, even without providing a diganosis. If you are not working, or studying in the field, you will most likely find this publication a bit dry and technical.

I love this book! Oh, come on. If you aren't a psychologist, I don't know what you're doing even looking at this book. This is of course the ultimate book on diagnostic information for mental disorders, but it's not written to be entertaining. It's written for clinical use. There will be a new one coming out in 2010? I think.

There are too many reviews here stating how indispensable or vital the book is without saying why. Mental disorders do not conform to lists of symptoms with "5 out of the following 8 criteria." They are far more fluid. There is no discussion of etiology. It is just a check-list of symptoms that is overused by unknowledgeable practitioners who can't do a good diagnosis through observation, history and examination, the courts and jails and especially the insurance companies. A lot of reasonable diagnostic possibilities are omitted due to lobbying by political groups too.

Wait just a chicken flickin' minute! What is Amazon trying to say about me that this shows up in my Gold Box with the claim that it's been selected "just for me?" It doesn't take a detective to figure out what they're seeming to imply, here.

Sure, there's probably a good doctoral thesis for someone in many of my issues, but I don't need a big doorstop of a book to self-diagnose actual disorders. Well, more of them, anyway.

I purchased this for a diagnostic counseling class in September '06. I use it weekly. Some of the pages are coming loose from the spine. I think this book is too big, and should be in volumes divided into disorders, or something like that. The pages are tissue thin, and we all know that this is a book that will be referred to often in practice. Of course, it is a necessary item in practice, and the information is just as it ought to be. There is a new DSM-V due out next year.

The DSM-IV-TR is fairly straight forward and easy to understand. It is not perfect and has limitations in application, but is good overall. If you are entering the field of psychology, this is a must-have. All psychiatric or psychological diagnoses must meet the criteria of this book. This will not tell you how you should treat disorders. It just gives the criteria and descriptions of each recognized mental disorder. If you want to learn about treatment, you will need an additional text such as the Manual of Psychopathology.

Psychiatry has always mentioned the brain and its parts. They use technical terms in reference to actual parts of the brain. However thier knowledge of mental illness is purely subjective. Meaning they only speculate as a group or panel then "diagnose" the illness by only labeling. Its strange but true. This is how they do it.
The fact that mental illness has no biological proof is the painful truth about psychiatry.

Reviewer Permalink
Anybody that works in mental health knows that the DSM-IV, no TR edition, is the closest thing we have to a bible in the field. A good learning tool for medical students and helpful with creating billing codes for insurance, but often difficult to narrow a patient into a specific diagnosis. Although the IV edition does have different qualifiers and diagnosis from III that it does help catagorize, but again this narrowness often leaves some people in the grey zone for a diagnosis. But, it's better than it was, and at least some of the grey zone that is psychiatric diagnosis is differentiated, now we just have more shades of grey. A good reference book, medical students might as well by the desk reference, but as a practitioner, its nice to have this handy once in a while. I suprise myself at least once a week finding a diagnosis that I didn't know was in the text. At least someone tried, and their will never be anything that make all practioners happy, and if their is...you've found the magic bullet.

(Hide Review...)  The closest thing to Diagnostic Guidelines in Psychiatry
Reviewer Permalink
This is the full manual that you need to at least be in the ballpark on a diagnosis to help treat your patients with reasonable certainty. With Diagnosis, there is prognosis...and with this book, you can give a patient some relatively confident answers about what they are experiencing. One disadvantage to this full text is that it is large, and there is a lot of verbage. The scaled down desk version or the pocket guide to the DSM IV that you may want to have on rounds.

One caviat, this book is a Conscensus between multiple experts and schools of training. The timeframes, symptoms, and criteria for diagnosis are never going to be perfect because patient's do not read this manual. This book does not substitute for clinical judgment and experience. If you see a duck and it quacks, but doesn't fall exactly into a catagory, call it a duck and go from there. Always treat the patient, not book.

A must have for a psychologist/psychiatrist/counselour.

DSM will remain as the bible of psychiatry. Despite its shortcomings, DSM has made it possible for clinicians to talk more objectively about psychiatric illnesses. Now more than ever, people around the globe can actually understand what 'schizophrenia' or 'bipolar disorder' really is. So if you're a trainee or a practising clinician, devour it, master it, enjoy it, and use it. But don't take the criteria too literally. Highly recommended!

(Hide Review...)  Have they made loneliness a "disorder" yet?
Reviewer Permalink
So, your 12-year-old kicked you in the shin, cursed at you, and ran away because you grounded him for being an academic failure? Oh, well, gee, your son must be suffering from "Oppositional Defiant Disorder." Oh, no, the problem has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that you are a lousy parent who failed to enforce discipline and teach your spoiled-rotten kid the meaning of respect. No, no, no. It's just a "disorder," and we can fix your boy by doping him up on some pills from GlaxoSmithKline.

So, you get piss-drunk every night after coming home from work at your dead-end job? Ah, well, you are being troubled by an "Alcohol Dependence Disorder." Well, sure, you might be a loser who has lost sight of life; but we can assure you that this is just a "disorder," and we can fix it by doping you up on some pills from Eli Lilly and Company.

So, you have been feeling down after your whole family--who meant everything in the world to you--died last month in a terrible plane accident? How awful to hear that you are feeling this way! You must be suffering from a "Depressive Disorder." Some may say that feeling depressed is just a natural part of being human, but this is blatantly false. Healthy, normal people never have any depressed feelings, so you must be troubled by a "disorder." So how about we dope you up on some pills from Pfizer?

So, you live in the Deep South, like to keep to yourself, and you prefer to spend your free time pursuing solitary, intellectual interests instead of burning crosses with the neighbors and flirting with your cousins? Oh, my, this sounds like a case of "Antisocial Personality Disorder." People who are normal never like to be alone, and they will always try to be in the company of other people. No, no, no; do not try to tell me it is just because the people around you are mentally and morally backwards. This kind of attitude only proves that you also suffer from a "Narcissistic Personality Disorder." This time, I'm going to have to dope you up on all the pills; because when someone does not conform to the arbitrary standards of "normality" which have been established by the APA, there obviously must be something wrong with them.

...

This book is garbage.

Chose Plato, not Prozac.
