The theme of this book would probably be that it ties in with the rest of the series, which is 'The Magic Treehouse Series'. The moral lesson might be not to burn or destroy books because they are such a great source of history.
There are actually three main characters. First there is Morgan le Fay, from the time of King Arthur, who owns the treehouse. Next there is Jack, the oldest of the two siblings. Fianally, there is Annie, the younger of the two siblings.
The supporting characters are their mom, who is in pretty much every story at the begining and end. Also included are a few people from ancient China. Mainly there are the silk weaver, the scholar in disguise, and Emporer Qin. More minor roles are the silk weaver's fiance, and a few various scholars, townspeople, and guards.
"You're going to ancient China." is a good excerpt to illustrate the geographic and time settings. The time is around 2,000 years ago in the time of the first emperor, The Dragon King. The geographic setting is, of course, China. Since Emperor Qin (the first emperor) was trying to unite the colonies it was, by that time, all one country rather than being divided. It is set in the capitol where the Imperial Palace was built. The political setting is to the point where Emporer Qin was so frustrated with the scholars that he is burning all the books. Because of this everybody is scared of him, especially the scholars and philosophers.
The major problem in this story is Jack and Annie need to find the ancient book, without any major mishaps. Normally they have a few minor problems, but nothing too huge, as it's a children's book and only about 68 pages. Helping them resolve this problem are a silk weaver and a scholar in disguise. Resolving the problem, simply, they find the book and bring it home with only a few problems.

I have always liked this series, even though I'm 15 now, I still like this series even though they're kind of young for me, and I can finish one in 30 minutes.

What a great way for the kids to learn! These books are great reading for children 7- 10 the characters are a brother and sister ages 7 and 8 who travel through time in a magic tree house by picking up a book and wishing to go to the places in the book. The facts of each book are acurate so the children are learning without realizing it. The passport on line for the children to fill out helps the children retain the knowledge the attained while reading. These books are a great teaching tool for teachers and parents alike

My four year old son is in love with this chapter series! A friend suggested it to us since he seemed ready for a more advanced reading material at bedtime. My husband reads him a chapter every night...sometimes more because they don't want to stop. It's become a great tradition for them, and something they both look forward to. We love that there are so many in the collection! Start with number 1 and just continue. :)

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

When Jack and Annie found out that they were going to China, they went straight to the treehouse. They met Morgan there, and she told them that they had to save a library in China. The dragon king was going to burn all the books, because he didn't like them. Jack and Annie saw a huge map of the castle where the emporer lived and they used it to help them find the library. In the end, Jack and Annie saved the library and were heroes again.

I liked this book because of the Terra Cotta soldiers (we have one of these at home !), the Chinese hats that Jack and Annie wore, and the dragon kings clothes. And I think I'm a good judge of Chinese things, since I was born in China !

This story take place on China in the 1970, the boy and the girl were ready to go to China and they go in to get the bamboo book that is on the city, and they find two Chinese people. They take them to the city and they see people selling fish, the boy told them if they can take them to the library to find the bamboo book that has all the secrets of China.
This book is mostly about two kids that go to China to look for the bamboo book that is in the city of China. They went to the library with the secret library card and finally they found the bamboo book.

In my opinion, I think its a very good book because, the trip to China and the Great Wall and the Dragon King's tomb.

Jack keeps a notebook, carries a backpack, likes adventures, likes information, likes to study, solves riddles, and is a smart boy. Annie likes animals, imaginary things, willing to help, encourages Jack, polite, uses clues, and she's focused.
Jack and Annie have to find a dragon coin to give to Morgan. I learned how to take care of people who are poor.
I felt excited because I felt like I was the dragon of the castle. This book reminds me of Dragon King on Damage Road. I think elementary students who like to read who like the author, Mary Pope Osborne, who like fantasy and adventure books would love this book.

I like that in every Magic Treehouse book you meet some good and some bad people. This book is not as scary as some Magic Treehouse books. There's only two scary parts. I think that the author doesn't tell you everything about the characters that Jack and Annie leave behind. It leaves a sort of happy surprise at the end.

Jack and Annie have gone to china to save an ancient legend. An extreamly powerful emperor (The Dragon King) gives an order to burn all the books in China. Will jack and Annie save the legend or will it be burned into ashes? You will find out when you read Day of the Dragon King. Jack-always sticks to his reserch book when they are in trouble or when they see or find something interesting. Annie-is a brave girl but sometimes she does extreamliy stupid things. The Dragon KING-The Dragon King Made a BIG mistake when he ordered for all the books in china to be burned. I would recomend this book because it has alot of really funny parts in it.

This book is where Jack and Annie go back to Japan where they meet the first king, the Dragon-King. A lot of people are worried because the Dragon-King is going to burn all the books that he finds. It's kind of scary, but mostly action-packed when Jack and Annie try to save the books. I highly reccomend this book to all fans, wether your a big fan or not.

Mary Pope Osborne has created a magical tale around her Master Librarians. Jack and Annie must travel back in time to save at least one bamboo book from the emperor's bonfire. The emperor is afraid that books are a threat to his power. During their adventure, Jack and Annie interact with characters from an ancient Chinese legend and observe history as it is happening. Jack describes many authentic Chinese artifacts and habits. These tidbits of Chinese hisory stimulate a desire to learn more about the Chinese culture. This easy-to-read tale will captivate children from ages six through twelve who wish to enjoy a good story and get a small dose of Chinese history.

Yeah! A series of books that will captivate all of my children from the youngest (age 6) to the oldest (age 12), so we can still enjoy our bedtime "group read." And even better - one that I enjoy reading to them! Oh, and it gets even better - the books even teach about different times and places in history! (I have to add a recommendation for you of my favorite new parenting book: Perfect Parenting: The Dictionary of 1000 Parenting Tips - very helpful!)

Reviewer Permalink
It's not often that I find a book that I actually enjoy reading aloud to my children. Most books, even kids books, have long, descriptive passages or paragraph upon paragraph of exposition which are boring to listen to and tough to read aloud without me getting dried out.

However, the Magic Treehouse Books are quick reads that are easy to dramatize. Main characters Jack and Annie have distinct personalities that are fun to give voice to. Jack is the serious scientific type. With his signature "Oh, man!", he is the perfect counterpoint to younger, impetuous sister Annie. ("Hi!")

While it's not necessary to start with the first book of the series (Ms Osborne does a commendable job of filling in the back story in each book w/o slowing down the narration), I recommend starting with book one since there are elements that build in each consecutive book. (Who is the mysterious M?)

The Treehouse books also offer contemporary vocabulary (but not to the point of being ridiculous), cool settings and fun drawings.

But the best thing about these books? Even my oh, so cool ten year old will sit down and listen.
