Dark Possession

A Carpathian event-the new hardcover from the phenomenal New York Times bestselling author.

Christine Feehan returns to the sensual Carpathian world that has earned her a reputation as "the queen of paranormal romance" (USA Today) in a new novel of true love and the unnatural forces that could destroy it.

Dangerously close to becoming a vampire, Manolito De La Cruz has been called back to his Carpathian homeland-and has unexpectedly caught the scent of his destined lifemate, MaryAnn Delaney. MaryAnn is human and well aware of the aggressive instincts of Carpathian males. A counselor for battered women, MaryAnn has no room in her life for someone like Manolito. But when she goes to South America to offer guidance to a young woman, she has no idea of the trap awaiting her. For she's been lured there by Manolito, who has seductive plans for the irresistible human female.

Once there, she'll be his. Once his, she'll never be released. She is his dark possession.

Let me start by saying that I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the previous books in this series--even the one where I hated the hero (shockingly it was one of Manolito's brothers). Mary Ann was not the same character in this book as she was in Dark Destiny. That was the first mistake. The second mistake is a lack of story. I felt like I was reading a bit of porn rather than the usual erotica--I finished the book a couple of weeks ago and am still waiting for a plot to show up.

I liked Manolito in Dark Celebration and was, in fact, expecting Dark Possesson to be, more or less, a continuation. Eh, no. I liked Mary Ann in Dark Destiny and expected her to be about the same if not more mature. Eh, no.

Still waiting for the plot to show up. Not sure but this may be the last one that I lay money out for. This is sad because I've been waiting for Nicholas' story.

(Hide Review...)  Different formula than other 'Dark' books

At first I really didn't like this book. Mary Ann's character was a total 'Diva' who was more concerned about the state of her boots than helping her dying lifemate. Manolito was also a bit different from Feehan's typical Carpathian male. He was confused and weak, unable to distinguish who was friend or foe.

BUT---to be fair as the story progressed, I realized why Manolito was having problems and why Mary Ann was being SO strong willed. It took a few chapters but after being taken aback initially, the book began to steadily grow on me and I really got into the story.

Feehan changes things up in this installment, giving us a new species and an unusual danger to Manolito and Mary Ann. We are also introduced to characters that we've heard about through out the entire Dark series but never met.

All in all a great story, with lots of twists and turns, steamy sex and danger, plus we have some suprises with the jaguar race and Mary Ann's conversion as well.

Although this book is slightly different from Feehan's usual format, it was a nice change, just different enough to spice things up a bit and keep me interested.

This was my first Carpathian Novel by Christine Feehan. Reading this book first wasn't probably the best idea considering there are 14 books before it, so I missed a lot of history that Feehan only briefly touches on in the book. The plot was a little messy --there so much going on and obvious details setting up for the next books to come, so at times I literally had no idea what was going on BUT in this novel are some of the hottest love scenes I've read in a long time (at one point I thought I might need a fan to cool myself down). On that point alone I'd recommend this book ; though the scenes are a bit unrealistic, sometimes that kind of fantasy love making just gets you thinking all kinds of "ohmy" thoughts in the best kind of way.

I couldn't wait to start reading it... and couldn't put it down once I started it!! I didn't think I would like any new twist with new creatures.... but now I can't wait to read more about them and how they get along with the carpathians. I say wow and you will love it if you like any of the other books. I have them all and can't wait for more....

I really like the Carpathians and own all of the first 12 or so. But it had been a while since I'd read Ms. Feehan when the write-up on DP brought me back to the series. It was gooood and not too difficult to piece together what I'd missed in the interim. I found myself rooting for Maryanne - you go girl! I loved her. She had a unique personality; she didn't just roll over and let the Carpathian take over her life. He had to meet her halfway and respect her power and her needs if he wanted to keep her.

This book renewed my interest in the series but is not a good starter book for someone new to the Carpathian world. I intend to go back and pick up the books that I missed so I can find out why they can't have girl children. And what about the dragonseekers! That's a new one on me. I'm definitely looking forward to the continuation of "the plan" and I hope Ms. Feehan injects some more fresh blood into the series like Maryanne. She was great.

Does anyone else wish that Ms. Feehan would find another adjective? If she uses "tremendous" one more time!

Very well written and picks right up after the ending to Dark Celebration. First book in a while that I've had to read twice back to back. Not all is as it would seem and the war between Carpathian and undead takes a new turn. Cant wait for book 16 later this year.

I thought that Dark Possession was a terrific installment to the Dark series. It was wonderful to have MaryAnn in the story. She was one of my favorite characters since she first appeared in Dark Destiny; and now she may be my favorite heroine. I thought Manolito was a perfect match for her, and the chemistry between them just fit. This suspense filled story with romance and love kept me reading page after page. It was a fantastic read, and there's no need to go into the detail of plot, etc., since others have commented on book and I don't want to spoil the story for the fans. Just count on lots of twists and great read. Enjoy.

Another novel that has touched my heart is Gathering of Cans by Robert L. Saunders. In this stunning Women's Fiction Zoie Baker is the heroine and a dauntless dreamer that feels with every fiber in her bones that she can build a swimming pool by gathering aluminum cans. In this quest she stumbles on unique cans, i.e., Nehi, Mountain Dew, a golden Budweiser beer can and these cans takes the reader on a fantastic journey into Zoie life. There is romance and a bit of mystery in this riveting story. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. Bye..

This audiobook was fantastic. Phil Gigante & Jane Brown should be proud of themselves they brought the characters to life. Phil Gigante has a great accent for the main character, super sexy. I can't recommend this highly enough especially, if like me, you are used to the audiobooks read by the one reader. I love it....have I metioned that :)

This book is a book to die for. It takes you on vacation of a lifetime.
You get to travel to the rainforest and the romance is supper. Christin Feehan knows how to connect the past with the present that if you are not a fan of her Dark Series, it will make you want to go and collect the rest of her book. I give it a big thumb up.

I love Christine Feehan. I have read every Dark book (some of them 3 or 4 times) from the Dark Prince right up to this latest, Dark Possession. It started to go wrong when the brothers from South America were brought in to the series. They may be Carpathians, but they are certainly not like those up to and including Dayan.

How could such a great series get so far off track?

I had hoped MaryAnn would get her own story eventually. MaryAnn was my favorite character from a previous novel -- i think it was Dark Destiny. The fire and personality of her character reminded me a lot of a close friend of mine.

It was a pleasant suprise to find that by going to Ms. Feehan's website you can read the excluded portions of the novel.

I love Christine Feehan's Carpathian world. The series is fabulous, the characters are wonderfully amusing. I can't wait for more of the series. I think the next one is called Dark Curse.

Reviewer Permalink
Considering that we had met the protagonists in previous Dark Series books and they were compelling individually, I was surprised that together they were a disaster. In this book, Ms. Feehan decides to add yet another kind of shape shifter to her already struggling repretoire of supernatural beings. The story itself was stilted and, in many aspects, a poorly disguised copy of earlier Dark books. There was no chemistry between the primary characters and the supporting characters were flat (even unlikeable).

The problem is that her talent is mediocre, at best, and she has trouble keeping her story lines fresh and interesting. In order to compensate for her flagging interest in her Carpathians, she has decided to blur the lines between her Dark books and her other supernatural series books. The results are disappointing.

Ms. Feehan continues her trend of making her heroes unappealing boors and her heroines unintelligent ninnies. Often, when I read her newer novels, I feel like she has forgotten her audience. Her website claims that she writes for herself, but she's not the one shelling out $25 dollars for 300 pages of muddle. I think if her philosophy is to write for herself, perhaps she should leave her chosen profession since it is her audience who determines her success and she is seriously letting them down.

I waited to buy this book because the last one A CARPATHIAN CELEBRATION was not what I expected and I didn't want to spend the money for a hardback, however Amazon has reduced the price. So I ordered it and I am glad I did, this is a very good read and introduces more supernatural beings. I must admit I hate the mages and that storyline.

I was pleased to read a book with minimal mages, I am not to thrilled with the next book in the series tho. However, this one is definitely worth the time and money if you are a Feehan fan.

Manolito is a hero to savor, I liked the fact he was not able to just order her around. In the previous title he was almost killed saving Shea and her baby from attack by the mages. Now he awakes in South America unknowing how he got there and because of his close call with death he is apparently in both worlds. Somehow he must join the two bits of his soul togather. MaryAnn holds one piece and the other is trapped in the nether regions.

MaryAnn is a counselor, she is human, Manolito claimed her without her knowledge and she is suffering because he has been sent to rest and recover in the ground. She does not understand what is going on, but her depression causes Manolito to rise early from his rest.

The rest of the book is a delight, new revelations, new storylines and a wonderful test of the sexes. I really did enjoy this one but I will still wait for a while on her next few, because as with most authors they don't always hit the nail on the head. I bought everything by Feehan until the mages appeared and that storyline has just not appealed to me. Good reading.

I have been a loyal fan of Christine Feehan and this series from the beginning and still go back and re-read the earlier titles, but I was hugely disappointed in this new venture into the Carpathian world. After Dark Celebration, I was avidly looking forward to Manolito's story, and I have to say that I feel completely let down. First, I have rarely met a heroine that I disliked so much. For someone who makes her living as a crisis counselor, she has some serious issues with both men and her inability to relinquish even the tiniest bit of control. Someone needed to tell her to get over herself and make up her mind. Manolito, at least, had an excuse for having problems dealing with his emotions, since he hadn't had any for the last millennium. In my humble opinion, way too much time was spent with the characters feeling sorry for themselves and trying to understand their emotions. Dark Possession might have been better entitled 'Dark Therapy'. Or possibly 'Carpathian as a Second Language', considering the amount of dialog spoken in that tongue. And I was sick of reading every detail about MaryAnn's highly accessorized and perfectly coordinated outfits. Just how many suitcases did this woman bring to the Amazon rain forest anyway?

Another thing that drove me crazy was the introduction of werewolves(!?!) to the series. Jaguar people are not new to the Carpathian world, having tied together Feehan's worlds back in Dark Symphony. Dragonseekers and Mages have also been alluded to before we actually met some. But werewolves?! This is the 18th story in the series and all of a sudden there are races that are popping out of nowhere. It feels like a cheap attempt to extend the Carpathian series beyond it's life expectancy. And it seems that werewolves are more powerful magic users than all the others, since MaryAnn can block anyone she wants to, induce the thoughts and actions of anyone she wants to, AND, she can knock out Mages and send Carpathians flat on the butts with a mere angry thought. If this is true, why are they one of the supposedly extinct races of legend? Of course, MaryAnn doesn't know she doing all of this. Give me a break!

I am still anxiously awaiting the next Drake Sisters and Ghost Walker books (the match between Ilya and Joley Drake promises to be explosive!), but I am heartily relieved that I borrowed this book rather than shelling out $24.95 for the hardcover (another VERY sore spot, but one that has to do with the publisher and not the author). Don't get me wrong, I will buy this book when it is released in paperback for my collection, but I hope this isn't a sign that Christine has given up and is merely 'phoning it in'. She has managed to keep this series alive a long time (Sherrilyn Kenyon seems to be running into similar issues with some of her dark hunters), and I sincerely hope that she can find her passion for the Carpathians again. At least until we can see the plot against the Prince foiled and the race back on its way to recovery.

(ATTENTION: SPOILERS IN HERE)

There were points in the book that seemed a bit redundent and a tad bit boring like the internal struggles. Maryanne was not at all the meek therapist I believed her to be in Dark Destiny! She bloomed! The plot twist about what maryann was and what manolito became was fabulous. I read that part about five times just so I could comprehend that Feehan had actually put werewolves in with carps, mages, vamps and jags. I loved that twist! I love vamps, lycans, and shapshifter novels! This definitly peeked my intrests and by adding lycans I think this opens up a whole new avenue for more books. I can't wait for the next dark book-the majority of them are wonderful. I love the interactions and action the couples have to deal with in each book! I only wish they were longer! Thanks for a great book!

I felt really let down by this book, and I paid the most for it. I preordered it. I tried to read it when I got it but could not get involved in the story, to my shock. I had read all the other stories combined in about 2 weeks time after reading the first one! I am a devoute fan. I love the Carpathian series, but confess this was a surprising miss. I put it aside for 4 months and just read it this week. I really liked the primary characters but I felt some critical information and other things were missing in this book; and I felt like there were some false starts. Where did all those mages suddenly come from? There was an opportunity here to tie up some loose ends from the previous books, especially regarding the mages. Just throwing them in, especially in the jungle, left me feeling very unsatisfied with the genesis of how they got into the story. The last we knew, there was only 1 for sure, possibly 2. Then there is the issue of how would the best of the Carpathians have put Manuel in that bizzare limbo? The whole one foot in one world and one foot in the other confused me more than anything. I felt like I had been drawn into an unfortunate rendering and coupling of Dante's circles of hell and the Odysseus trip to Hades. I also missed some of the other characters that always seem to appear with rapier wit and intelligence. I agree with another reviewer, enough with the other languages! This is not Tolkien. I don't need or like or want that unnecessary distraction in the Carpathian novels. I got addicted to the stories before Ms. Feehan started this language thing. It is irritating fluff. I prefer the more tightly drawn plots and more interaction between Carpathians that drew me into the series in the first place. While I really like Maryann and her reliance on fashion as a kind of armor, something to which a lot of women can relate, her essential history is missing. I love Manolito too, but felt like he was missing some explanations and a good story line. This story was disjointed and did not seem like part of the series. You cannot skip one of the series without missing a puzzle piece critical to the series. I did not feel that way about this book. I hope the new Ghost Walker book does not dissapoint. I am a huge fan of those as well.

I hope the next Carpathian novel answers some of the questions that have been left hanging and that it brings more of the previous characters together for a united purpose.

I still think Ms. Feehan is a fine writer and respect her tremendous talents.

She needs to move on from this series, it was a good run but it is SO over. The Christmas reunion book was one book too many, it was nothing more than a recap of the entire series interspersed with the current story.
This book shows without a doubt that she is running out of material and the schtick is running thin. Even the sex scenes were so predictable that I just skimmed over them "Oh yes right there oo ahhh." Snore
You were meant to be my lifemate it is written bla bla bla.
If you still love this genre might I suggest J.R. Wards Black Dagger Brotherhood Series.

I am giving this book a 3 star status because I love the dark series and couldn't bear to give anything less. Manolito was such a powerful Carpathian and built-up into a heroic character in the Dark Celebration... and when we finally got his book "Dark Possession" he was diminished to a huge disappointment. I feel that the book has neither a beginning nor a proper ending and the two main characters were not allowed to develop into their natural roles - too many interruptions. I also feel that Feehan is introducing too many new species to the Carpathian race. Her earlier books were great because the species involved were Carpathian males and human females.

I think either Feehan is spending less time on her "treasure" that is called "Dark Series" or loosing her magic touch. Hope the next one, which I think is going to be Dominic's story, will be a good one. I loved Dark Demon and Dark Curse sounds like a prelude to the Dragon's lineage.

This is the best series ever. A friend recommended the first book. I had never read a romance novel in my life until them. I finished all the books in two months (16 books at the time) and am now a romance lover.

The men are wonderful!! Strong.. dominant.. and very possessive. The women are all strong willed and give the guys a run for their money!! I now find myself comparing all other vampire romances to Mrs. Feehan's Carpathians!

The plot of Dark Possession is pretty clear: picking up where "Dark Celebration" left off, Manuel (Manolito) De La Cruz has found his lifemate - MaryAnn Delaney - and needs to claim her in order to avoid turning into a vampire. As usual the female lifemate in the story is reluctant and finds her intended mate's machismo and controlling nature/protectiveness annoying.

Dark Possession, unlike Feehan's other novels, felt rote. There was nothing to expand on the basic plot: Manolito felt like a stock character and MaryAnn was annoying. While I can appreciate the fact that she was supposed to be fashion-conscious, she struck me more like a shallow name-dropper. D&G this, Versace that, Kors boots, etc. At other times this same woman referred to herself as an "urban bush woman".

The sexual scenes were "okay", but I have to agree with another reviewer: compared to the rest of this series, the main characters are less "real", the scenes not as hot (I ran into two pages of squick during one scene, but that's a personal preference), and even the fight scenes are, with one exception (I won't spoil it!), "okay but not great".

I hope that Ms. Feehan isn't losing steam and that this book is an aberration. Certainly, were I the publisher I would NOT have chosen Dark Possession as the first "regular" novel in the Dark series to be put out in hardback form. I suggest buying the paperback when it comes out or, if you can't wait, visiting the library.

Manolito De La Cruz is Carpathian. He has awakened in the rain forest surrounded by vampires and apparitions. He is in grave danger and senses his lifemate is near, but he doesn't know who she is.

MaryAnn Delaney has come to the Del La Cruz home on the outskirts of the rain forest to counsel her friend Juliette's sister Jasmine. Jasmine is the victim of a sexual attack and MaryAnn is a counselor for battered women. She is finding it difficult to help anyone though because she herself is falling apart. She witnessed Manolito's death and is grieving and sinking into a depression that confuses her as much as it distresses her. She barely knew Manolito. Juliette and her lifemate Riordan, Manolito's brother, sense that MaryAnn is connected to Manolito in some way so they take her into the jungle to try and find him.

Manolito is trapped in the spirit world. He doesn't know who has trapped him or why and the danger is rapidly growing. While he and MaryAnn discover unfathomable things about her, it becomes evident that Manolito's past has come back to haunt him.

Dark Possession is a fascinating story. Its amazing imagery, thrilling battle scenes and intense sensuality are unparalleled. Manolito is an alpha male in every sense of the word and MaryAnn is stylish, strong, and independent; their joining is spectacular. Dark Possession's magnificence lies in its incredible storyline and sensational characterization. I was captivated and consumed from first page to last!

I got to read it first. My daughter's got it now. Not sure how many it will get passed along to. Any book that gets passed along to others as quickly as one reader finishes it it a pretty good read.

(Hide Review...)  Steamy sex is great--but the characters aren't

Manolito De La Cruz has waited for his lifemate for hundreds of years. Like all Carpathians, he knows that only one woman will ever be right for him--and that if he somehow fails to connect with her, he's doomed to spend a lifetime devoid of emotion and even the ability to see color. Carpathians who fail to connect with their lifemates go insane, become vampire, or die. But suddenly Manolito can see colors, can feel emotion. Although he's dead, and tortured in the shadow-world between life and the void, he knows he can return, must return. His lifemate needs him.

MaryAnn doesn't need any man. As an abuse counselor, she knows too much the evil that dominant, abusive men can do. While Manolito may claim to love her, he doesn't even know her name--if that doesn't signal he's a stalker, what would? Still, when the vampires, mages, and jaguar-men attack, she wishes Manolito were around. Still, although she's absolutely certain she has no psychic ability, she manages to pull up the power to kill the mage and stop the jaguars.

Although MaryAnn doesn't want to, she can't help desiring Manolito. His hot body, the way he touches her, her own body's response to him, tempt her to fly against all logic. But when Manolito is confronted by MaryAnn's secret, she fears she's learned the truth--that he doesn't want a partner, simply a possession.

Author Christine Feehan combines vampires with steamy sex to create an intriguing situation. The mix of an alpha male with hundreds of years of life (and wealth) with an independence-minded woman has all kinds of potential. And the danger of the vampires and jaguar-men, as well as the mysterious mages, makes for vivid adventure. Unfortunately, Feehan didn't quite live up to the potential. Manolito spends his time feeling guilty for his part in coming up with the plan that threatens the Carpathians, thinking how much he wants MaryAnn, and being tortured by vampires. MaryAnn worries about her fashion while she insists on denying her own magical abilities. Even when she discovers her unexpected talent, this doesn't really become a major plot element.

DARK POSSESSION fell short of its potential because the central characters never really stepped out to become real. Sure the sex is hot, but I like to sympathize with the characters, think they deserve what they're getting. It's hard to see what Sure Manolito desires MaryAnn, but it's hard to see why. It's harder to imagine wanting to spend eternity with a woman who cares more about having the correct brand of nail polish than in learning the truth about herself. As for Manolito, scratch beneath the Latino-macho and there's not a lot there.

Feehan delivers a high-potential story and her sex sceens sizzle. DARK POSSESSION is certainly readable, but it doesn't exactly stick with you.

I loved the hero and heroine. The introduction of the new species was tastefully done. In addition to the interracial aspect of the book made me love this one more than all the rest.

I am a Christine Feehan fan, started with her sisters series and love the Ghost Walkers. However the Dark series just doesn't come close for me. I have read more than one, whilst waiting for a new edition in the other series, but I find myself bored with the characters, unsympathetic and generally discontented. I find them all much of a muchness. If this were all she wrote I would never read her again. My daughter gave me this edition and I did enjoy this one most of all ..... but not enough to buy my own copy or even care when the next one was coming out.

I'm a huge fan of both the dark series and the Ghostwalker series by C. Feehan. This book was no disapointment and I think even a little better written than the last few installments of the dark series. There is still some of the "I'm a poor woman what am I to do without a big strong man" to set your teeth on edge, however it is played down far more in this book when compared to previous releases. Looking forward to reading more!

The story was full of holes as far as the whole gray, dead area. Either the hero's body is left behind or it's not. Make up your mind.

The language was sappy and boring. How can anyone stand to have dialogue cut off in mid-sentence so that the hero can spend three pages expounding on the beauty of his mate and how much he loves her and then finish the dialogue or action? Feehand does this over and over throughout the book pretty much just repeating the same dribble. It's boring and cuts of the flow of action. I found this book to be diappointing.

Every time I swear I'll never buy another Feehan, and darnit, I do anyways. I just wish she'd quit writing the same dang plot. Her stories were so much better in the begining of the series. It just smack's of same old, same old. The last of these books show she's stuck in a rut...but, I know, writing this I'm still intending to toss money her way for the next book, same plot or not. Just hope it proves more interesting.

As a "Dark Series" fan, I couldn't get into this one. It drug on in places and was kind of boring. I'm not going to buy another of this series in hard back again as it's just not worth the price. Maybe I would have been more positive if I'd read it in paper back. I'm disappointed as I didn't care for the last Drake sisters novel either. I guess it's too hard for the author to keep up the momentum but I am frankly SICK of Feehan describing Carpathians eyes as Black Ice or describing the heroine "shoving her fist in her mouth" to prevent crying out or whatever. It's getting old.....I'll let the next few books decide whether or not it's time for me to move on.

I've been a Christine Feehan fan for several years now and have enjoyed most of her books tremendously. This is a wonderful addition to the Dark series. I was worried that Ms. Feehan had lost her passion for the Carpathians a few books back, but I'm delighted that Dark Possession once again revealed her devotion to this series. This book is filled with steamy romance and wonderful character development. I found it impossible to put down!! Well done Ms. Feehan, and thank you for the great read.

Every book in the Dark series never fails to capture the reader and hold them in the story. I always feel like I'm reading about characters I already know, without feeling like there was no closure to the book. I love the old word settings, where men could be counted on to protect and care for family. They have honor and loyalty, and Christine Feehan works magic with her characters and stories. I will always be a great fan, and purchase any book written by Ms. Feehan because she never, never disappoints.

Ms. Feehan has done it again! This story was good and introduced some new elements into a series that has captured my interest since I read Dark Guardian (my first Feehan book).I am anxious to read more.
My only complaint is I have to wait so long for the next one.

I love this series, but I was disappointed with Dark Possession. She devoted very little to the back ground of the characters, gave up more than 200 pages in the beginning to Manolito in the shadow world; which just droned on and on.

Dark Possession (The Carpathians (Dark) Series, Book 15

After having read all of the Dark Series, I was looking forward to reading this one very much. However, I find that having words inserted about a language that does not exist, and without a translation immediately available distracting and made it harder to stay focused on the story itself.

I also was disappointed that the book did not begin where it had left off, in the Carpathian Mountains. So much had happened there and now we are left to believe that the brothers just took their brother and brought him back to the Rain Forest and no story is there to tell us how it all took place?

It was also hard for me to understand how he is able to come and go in the shadow world so easily if his body is alive, but not always?

This story also seemed to run against all the others in that the Carpathian male would protect his lifemate above his own life, but then just leaves her to go back to the shadow world without ensuring her protection first.

I don't know, I was just disappointed in this novel, but love the Drake Series since each sister has unique gifts and qualities of their own so the books are each unique in their own way.

The Dark Series now seems to be Carpathian finds his lifemate, binds her to him, fights vampires, converts her then lives happily ever after with a lot of sex in between.

Hope the next one is better, but if not, it will be my last purchase of the Dark Series.

Thanks, Kay

I enjoyed this book because it moved the story of the Carpathians along. The reason it doesn't have 5 stars is because I feel to much was jammed in to short of a book to the detriment of the main couple. Also, a new reader would be left wondering about much of the backstory.

The main couples story seemed a bit rushed. A lot of people disliked MaryAnn because of her fashion conscious ways and I have no idea if the writer meant this but I took this as the way she had developed over the years to control/keep in check her "POWER". When one looks at what MaryAnn brings to the table I think she actually is one of the most powerful lifemates in that the conversion for Manolito and MaryAnn is a two way street with her giving her "POWER" to Manolito as well as receiving his gift of longevity. Manolito is just as old and just as dominant as the other heroes in the dark series but he is the first one that took the time to think about his actions and how they affected his lifemate. It didn't always stop him from doing or saying something stupid but at least he gave some thought to his words or actions instead of the usual "It is my right, she must submit, yada yada."

I really like this series and although I enjoy each new set of lifemates what keeps me interested is the mystery of how the Carpathians got where they are today and how they are going to recover. I can't wait for the next book because I want to know what they are going to do with the new information gained.

I do recommend this book to readers who like paranormal romances but I would not start the series with this one.

I must first explain my earlier comment and then move on to the review. When I found out that Feehan was coming out with a new novel about the deliciously sexy, yet moody Carpathian Manolito De Le Cruz and whitty, fashionista Mary Ann Delaney, I preordered and didn't really pay attention to the cost, or that now the novel was is hardback. Well, if I had known, I would have probably tried to get it from the library (if I just couldn't wait) or waited patiently for the paperback version (although don't get me wrong, the book was good), because it seemed to be the same quality and amount of her paperbacks. That is perhaps my biggest con about the book.

Now the pros! Finally a story devoted solely to Manolito and his stuggle to (1) remain Carpathian and not become a vampire; (2) not fall prey to the seduction of several vampires he has killed in the past (he is in between the spirit world and the real one); (3) claim his lifemate, who is reluctant to even get in a relationship with a man, especially a dominate male carpathian; and (4) basically, fight all those things threatening to claim his soul and make him evil. On the other hand, Mary Ann, his reluctant lifemate (introduced in other novels) is struggling with her own personal demons, and it would seem everyone elses. (She is in the rain forrest to help cure some women who have been brutalized by some wereleopards). Mary Ann has just learned that (1)she is the lifemate of a dominate male; (2) an attack in her past has left her not trusting men; and (3) she soon learns that not only may she be psychic, but much more.

As the two find love, we are introduced to new characters (Luis) and reintroduced to old ones (Manolito's brothers and some of their lifemates, as well as those under their protection). And the best scene is seeing big bad Manolito painting Mary Ann's toes! Now who else could but Feehan could make you laugh that hard?

Well, in conclusion,I read Dark Possession in two days on a trip to Charleston, and enjoyed it. You have everything that makes a great Feehan novel....romance, great sex scenes and a good plot. But is it worth the hard cover price, that is up to you to decide.
