This, the second in the Three Sister's Island trilogy is just as good as the first. Miss Roberts moves you right along with her wit. Once again I was sucked right into the story. Great little book.

This is a very charming book, the first in a trilogy. The heroine, Nell Channing, had to fake her own death to escape an abusive husband, but her trials aren't over yet. Landing on Three Sisters Island, she gradually finds friends, creates a career, meets the perfect man...but she has to deal with her past before she can enjoy her future. Along the way, she also finds out that she is an hereditary witch, and will play a part in averting a 300-year-old curse. I have read this book several times, and always loved it, but I have one small quibble...the silly rhymes used in witchcraft wouldn't convince a toddler, much less the powers of Air, Earth and Fire.

Nell Channing is on the run! She has had to go so far as to fake her death to escape her abusive wealthy husband. When Nell lands on Three Sisters Island, she finds the place she feels at home. She finds a job at a café owned by Mia Devlin. The two hit it off and become fast friends. Mia is a witch. This is something she neither hides nor flaunts, but when it comes to light that Nell also possesses powers, Mia helps her develop them. While developing her gifts, Nell makes another friend of Ripley Todd, Zack's sister. Ripley is also a witch, but doesn't actively practice.

When the local sheriff, Zack Todd, meets Nell, he is determined to get closer to her. He plans to break thru all her barriers. While she likes Zack, she doesn't disclose her deception because she is afraid of being found. When her identity is revealed, her life is at risk. It will take the strength of the Three Sisters - Nell, Mia, and Ripley for her to survive.

I enjoyed this first installment of the Three Sisters. The practicing witches were a new aspect for me and interesting to read.

I finished the first in the triology this weekend and I couldn't wait to start the next book. This book was hard to put down and I found myself reaching for the book when I had more than a few minutes to savor it.Nora Roberts paints a vivid picture of the Island and its inhabitants. Her characters come alive on the pages making it easy to picture yourself in the setting and becoming involved in the drama. It's a great read and I can't wait to get to book three. Savoring book two....

I have audio tapes of this trilogy (Dance Upon the Air, Heaven and Earth, Face the Fire), purchased at a used book store, and enjoyed the story so much that I wanted the unabridged books on disc. The discs are well worth the purchase price. Narration and clarity of sound are excellent. This trilogy is my favorite Roberts trilogy -- pure escapism at its best. This set is worth a place in my permanent collection -- I'm sure I'll listen to it many times.

As usual, Nora Roberts delivers another excellent series. This series was one of the first Nora Roberts books I discovered.

Since then, and yeah, I'm a guy, and I lift weights, and I'm a straight macho guy, ad nauseum, but I love Nora Robert's writings, I have read thirty five of her books in the last three months.

The ladies at my favorite restaurant enjoy talking to me about Nora Roberts. I have a couple of them reading Nora Roberts and one lady and I are exchanging different copies of her books.

Enjoy this series. It is one of her best. It has the best blend of magic, romance, good plot twists, and strong characterization. Her series creates a desire in you to pick up the atlas and start hunting down the island and it's inhabitants.

And guys...with Nora Roberts you just might gather a little insight into the minds of these amazing female creatures. One hint...bring lots of chocolate and never forget what outfit and scent she wore the first time you met her.

Nora...I'm about to figure you out!

I enjoyed Dance Upon Air, the first book in the three sisters island trilogy. The story of Nell and how she came upon this island and the place she calls home was amazing. I liked how Roberts tied in witchcraft to the story line. Not only was the story filled with romance but ut has a twist of mystery and drama. It took me no time to read.

I've been reading Nora Roberts for years, ever since she started out writing contemporary romances for the Silhouette line. I always loved her great sense of humor in those books. "Dance Upon the Air" is more serious. It deals with a very serious subject, that of domestic abuse. It also deals with magick and spells. I loved all three of the witches...Mia, Ripley and Nell. And wow, what a hero Zack is. I can hardly wait to read the next two books in the trilogy.

I loved this 1st in the Three Sisters Trilogy.
I was hooked from the get-go by Roberts expert building of suspense and characterizations.
She draws a wonderful sense of place, and atmosphere is
just richly written throughout.
I really liked all aspects of this story.
The romance, the element of magic.
This book is mainly about Nell. Her adventure of running from an abusive husband to find someplace safe.
Her friendship with the other two "sisters" Mia and Ripley.
It is a very satisfying story on all counts.
When Roberts is in the zone, no one does it better.

When I began to read this book I was instantly draw to the character's in it. Ms. Roberts has a way of making the character's seems so realistic. You will probably find yourself saying, "I know someone that is just like that!" I absolutley love the one named "Ripley!" If you are debating on buying this book I would definately say, YES! Don't forget the other two books that go along with this one. Each book tells the story of all three witch's. All are very enjoyable to read!

I love Ms. Roberts books so much because of all the magic she brings into them...but this time, the magic is so literal--no pun intended.

The characters were just exceptional. I loved watching Nell blossom in very page. From being so scared and broken to becoming a strong woman/witch and taking life into her hands. I loved that Zack took Nell for what she was and helped her become the woman she became through-out the books.

The characters of Mia,Ripley, and Lulu were very entertaining as well. I read the rest of the novels and enjoyed them as much but Nell and Zack's story will always be the most special to me.

However with that said- I am a great fan, and will continue to buy her books

I fell into the third book on accident while on a trip and wanted something to read. I fell in love with the three sisters in this story. The characters are so real and the imagery that you get when these women are working their magic is wonderful. She did wonderful research on the occult terms that are within the book and are used correctly. I enjoyed this book so much. Although, I do have to say the third book in the series is a bit better than this one. But, in the first we are getting to know the characters and so in parts in it is a bit slow and tedious. But well worth the read. I love how she can just write about magic and make it seem so romantic and your heart goes out to these women in the story. Everyone can associate with the characters. We all know a friends like these ladies in the book. Get this series and read it!!

Nora Roberts has the ability to create with words towns and places I would love to escape to forever. Three Sisters Island is a beautiful setting for the main character, Nell Channing, to resolve her painful past and find herself and true happiness.

I love Nell as a character. Although she is very similar to many of Ms. Roberts's other heroines, something about the way she wrote Nell really brought her to life for me. I can relate to her, sympathize with her, and root for her to succeed and be happy. Her love interest, Zack, the sheriff of Three Sisters, is also another Roberts stock character. But, like Nell, he seemed so real. It was wonderful to watch Nell find herself and fall in love with Zack against her will. In so many romances it's hard to believe the couple has anything deeper between them than lust and hot sex. But it was easy to see Zack and Nell falling for each other through the story, and when the first love scene finally came, it was deeply satisfying and just beautiful. The love scenes in this novel never felt superfluous, but were a needed part of the romance and helped to move the story along.

The supporting cast, Mia and Ripley, were also well-developed and interesting characters. The way they were portrayed added depth to Nell's story and set up their respective stories perfectly. Mia guides Nell with her strength and wisdom, and helps her to find her inner powers. Ripley is fun, though somewhat less developed. She is Zack's sister, and becomes a good friend to Nell. Her little verbal battles with Mia added some humor to the tale. Each of the minor characters, while too many to list, also felt real and gave the town life and color.

The first part of the story moves slowly, and tends to meander about the town as we watch Nell settling in and becoming a part of Three Sisters. But it's never boring. The magical aspect is introduced gradually; the details of Nell's past and future destiny are fed bit by bit to the reader, keeping an undercurrent of suspense through the rather mundane happenings. Toward the end, when Nell's abusive husband shows up in town to claim her, the pace picks up suddenly and the story becomes intense and suspenseful.

So why the four stars? Well, there were a few things that kept me from fully enjoying DANCE UPON THE AIR. First of all the main characters did not seem quite true to the ages stated. All three were supposed to be in their late twenties, but they acted, spoke and dressed like they were at least ten years older. According to the author, Nell's story begins in June, 2001 but all of the clothing and fashions described, especially Mia's, sounded like the eighties-like styles still worn by women in their forties. Yes, it's a minor quibble, and this probably won't bother most readers.

Secondly, the paranormal aspect of the story was just not well developed, in my opinion. Nell comes into her powers too easily and suddenly. All a witch has to do to cast a spell is make up a rhyming poem that ends with "As I will, so mote it be" and poof, it happens. There's no discipline, no learning, no preparation. Nell is able to do major things like creating wind and fire too easily, considering she'd never had any psychic experiences in the past, and there are no after effects such as exhaustion for such great works of power, nor is there a believable explanation as to why. I would have found this much more convincing had these phenomena occurred throughout Nell's life, especially during times of trauma... like when she was so brutally beaten by her husband. I personally think the whole magic aspect would have worked far better had it been kept a far more subtle, natural power that worked in less obvious, more mysterious ways.

But all in all, DANCE UPON THE AIR was a delightful read, and a keeper. If you haven't read it, I suggest you consider giving it a chance. I'm glad I did.

Here Roberts takes a lame conventional plot (escaping an abusive psycho ex-husband and falling in love, while lying to, a super-honest man) but puts a supernatural spin on it.

This book has little of the supernatural, which is much better explored in the next two, and it is used mostly to show Nell getting self confidence and growing as a woman.

She comes to the remote Three Sisters Island to start a new life and becomes the star chef at the bookstore cafý. Owner Mia Devlin quickly befriends her as well as her estranged childhood friend Ripley Todd. Mia reveals that they are witches, and lo and behold, so is Nell, completing a triumvirate that will end some vague and never fully explored curse upon the island, provided they all fall in love with some man to be named later.

The main story is between Nell Channing and Ripley's brother, sheriff Zach Todd, super hunky and something of a naughty boy scout type. The two main characters are very fleshed out and brilliantly written, but the dialogue can get a little wordy and the sexual attraction between the two is never explosive but always simmering.

Nell comes into her own; starts a catering business, seduces Zach, and takes witch lessons form Mia. But then her identity is revealed and she fears losing Zach at the exact moment her ex-husband steps foot on the island to kill her.

Instead of the conventional hero-riding-to-the-rescue Roberts has the three women forming a triumvirate of power to fight the foe.

This book isn't quite sure what direction to go on but the writing is superb and the magic story enthralling. A good start to a good trilogy, a gentle initiation to the paranormal for those who haven't explored it.

I was drawn to this trilogy because the three sisters of the island are witches. When Nell Channing arrives on the island all three of the positive forces are back on the island together - the three descendent daughters of the sisters have come together as the fable says they will. There is Nell, who escapes to the island to start a new life after running from her abusive husband. She comes to the island and finds work as a cook in Cafe Book, owned and operated by Mia. Mia is a modern day witch and becomes Nell's older sister in friendship and witchcraft. The last of the circle is Ripley, who is the Deputy in town - once a close friend with Mia she now has turned her back on witchcraft.

I look forward to reading the next two installments in the trilogy; 'Heaven and Earth' and 'Face the Fire' and learning more about Mia, Ripley and Nell.

Dance Upon the Air is Nora first in a trilogy about witches and East Coast island lore.

One of the things Nora Roberts does very well is to create her trilogies as we've seen by the Chesapeake Bay trilogy, Faerie Tale trilogy, and now Three Sisters Island trilogy. She grabs the reader within the first few pages and takes you on a fun ride through the lives of three different people who have common threads. No one writes a better trilogy than Nora Roberts does!

Dance Upon the Air introduces us to the legend of Three Sisters Island. To escape being persecuted during the Salem Witch-Hunts, three witches (Air, Wind and Earth) use their magic to have part of the land break off and become an island haven where they can be safe and free. Each goes a different way, and the story is of their offspring finding their way back to the island.

Dance Upon the Air focuses on Air, as you can probably tell by the title. Air's descendent is Nell Channing, a woman who fakes her own death to leave an abusive, wealthy husband. After her death, she changes her identity and becomes Nell. Nell has been running for almost a year when she comes to Three Sisters Island and finally finds a place she wants to call home. She takes a job in the Book Café working for Mia Devlin, a powerful witch with past demons of her own. The two become fast friends. When Nell realizes she too has powers, Mia becomes her mentor and her life really changes from anything she's ever experienced.

This would be a fun book with whimsical stories of friends helping each other heal their wounds, but Ms. Roberts has other ideas to add to the mix. Enter Zack Todd, the local hunky sheriff who starts pecking away at the wall Nell has built around her. Ah yes, a bit of romance to spice things up a bit! And to keep things just a little off balance, she adds Ripley Todd, Zack's sister and Three Sisters Island deputy. Ripley used to practice her witchcraft but for some reason she has given it up. Ms. Roberts doesn't enlighten us as to the reason, only lets us enjoy the tough, opinionated, obstinate Rip, as she's known. The interchanges between Ripley and Mia are filled with fireworks, animosity and tons of other emotions that add pure enjoyment to your reading.

Dance Upon the Air is somewhat predictable but when you're engrossed in it, you really won't care about that fact. It's an interesting, romantic tale of how a young woman is able to leave a miserable life and strike out on her own and become happy. It's a story of friendship and the power of those types of bonds. It's a romance that will have you sigh. It's definitely worth the price of a new paperback!

Heaven and Earth is the next in this trilogy - see my review on that one!

This was one of those fantastic books of Nora Roberts, where I lose myself in the writing. Roberts writes this trilogy with a strength not seen since her Born In Trilogy. I felt this book was made up of several different story lines, but instead of Roberts stuffing them into a readers throat at once, she allows them to gracefully develop and emerge as nescesary for the story. Nell Channing is a woman who grows as the story continues, growing in her knowledge that she is a witch. I would say this is an essential summer read!

This was an amazing book. Nell escapes her abusive husband, and arrives on Three Sister's Island looking for a quiet place she can continue to hide while she starts her life over.

Ms. Roberts has again written some strong, lovable and hateable characters into existance. Her plots are always as storng as her characters and this novel is not an exception to the rule. This book is enjoyable, moving, and also had suspense. This was not a book I could put down, and when I finished I was glad that there was another in the series to pick up and read. The audiocassette version of Nora Roberts' "Dance Upon the Air" is a delightful experience. I enjoyed sharing my driving time getting to know Nell and hear her amazing story of escape and rebirth. Sandra Burr is a voiceover talent who does a great job with the female characters. Nell has an amazing sensitivity and delightful hopefulness, while being shadowed with haunting fears. Burr uncovers wonderful shadings in Norah Roberts' prose. As read by Burr, Mia is also a delightful character, a bit brassy and businesslike, contrasted to Nell's great sensitivity. Her assistance to Nell by taking a chance on a stranger needing a job demonstrates great kindness. Of course, Nell just happens to be an exquisite chef, which makes the fit as a cook absolutely perfect. Burr's Ripley is the least of the three in this recording, but has a real determination and thoughtful side as one of the island's law enforcement duo. Burr's male characters work less well as Sandra strains to get down into a deep register that flattens out some of the sensitivity and shadings of emotion that should be in Zack Todd's character. That said, it's still compellingly interesting, but would have worked more effectively to bring in a male voiceover talent to handle the guys. When Evan shows up, he basically sounds the same as Zack, other than for being a little more mean in his attitude. Perhaps more of a distinction between a New England accent vs. the California rich boy speech could have helped make a better distinction. Norah Roberts' story is a real delight as the Three Sisters Island becomes a real place for us. The description of the cliffs, the forests, the market, the town, the bookstore, Nell's kitchen and the flowers are entrancing. The audio version is an excellent addition for those of us who try to squeeze in time for one more book! Enjoy!

I "cheated", so to speak, & listened to "Dance" - the CD version & I finished it in a day! I zipped through those 4 CD's while preparing Thanksgiving dinner - I couldn't tear myself away from it. In some ways, the book reminded me of "Sleeping With the Enemy" in the way that Nell escaped her past, abusive life to start anew. I loved the whole setting of the island, the characters, the romance & the magic. I can't wait for the second story - I'll probably complete in a day as well! A recommended read for Nora Robert's fans.

Three Sisters is a small, rocky island off the coast of Massachusetts. Legend has it that the island was once a part of the mainland. Back in the late 1600s, during the Salem witch trials, three sisters, good witches all, known as Fire, Earth and Air, conjured the island and made it a haven against persecution. Unfortunately, the sisters did not fare as well as their island. Air fell in love with a man who proved to be so abusive that he finally killed her in a fit of rage. The second sister, Earth, vowed revenge and when she destroyed her sister's killer, she broke her sacred promise to do no harm. The last sister, Fire, lost her love and in despair she took her own life. Before she died she cast a spell to keep the island safe for 300 years. At that time she prophesied a reunion of three sisters, descendants of the original three, who would join together to redeem their ancestors and save their home from destruction.

Fast forward 300 years to Three Sisters Island. A frightened young woman, Nell Channing, comes to the island fleeing her past. She has been drawn here through compelling dreams. Concealing her identity, with few possessions and no identification, she finds a job as a gourmet cook at a local bookstore and cafe. The cafe's owner and Nell's new boss, Mia Devlin, warmly welcomes her as if she is a long lost friend. She rents Nell a lovely cottage and helps her settle in. For the first time in many years Nell begins to believe she has found a home and a place to make her future. The town sheriff, tall, dark and handsome, (of course), Zack Todd begins to woo her and Nell is drawn to him in spite of her knowledge that she can never become involved.

Then the past finally catches up to Nell. The evil she has been trying to escape comes to the island, endangering her and threatening the lives of those she has come to love. The curse of Three Sisters and the legend behind it are disclosed. Nell discovers that she is one of the three who can break the centuries-old spell and save her home and her life - with the help of two other strong, gifted women whom she has grown to care for as sisters.

One of the other reviews called this novel a combination of "The Witches Of Eastwick" and "Sleeping With The Enemy" and I think that is an apt description. The suspense and sheer terror of being pursued by an enraged, abusive spouse is clearly portrayed here, embellished a bit with the addition of magic and the supernatural. And Nora Roberts depicts the love, camaraderie, humor and complexity of the relationship between the sister witches in wonderful detail. It is easy to love Ms. Roberts' characters as she develops them with great care. The sisters' magic is delightful, as is the romance. The story is appropriately chilling at times and filled with suspense. "Dance Upon The Air" is the first part of a trilogy. I have read all three books and this is my favorite. It is an unputdownable read, perfect for curling up on a cold winter's night.

This is my second favorite Nora Roberts' trilogy, right behind the Dreams trilogy. The characters are charming and real, making it easy for readers to relate to them. Nora Roberts is amazing with detail, and when you read the book, it's like you can see everything that's going on through the character's eyes. Fabulous read..full of magic and love.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It was easy to read and had enough suspense and colour to keep me going until the end. Be warned though it is a very simple story written with simple style. It is a great book to curl up with on a winters day and be entertained without getting the grey matter working too hard. Give it a go - you will find it worth your while.

I bought the book for my mother. She told me how much she loved the book. I bought her the rest of the trilogy soon after that. She told me that it was a quick read. I began to think that I was missing something and used the look inside the book feature. At the end, of those few pages, I was saying where is the rest of this and I need more. I bought the books for myself and I have thoroughly enjoyed the trilogy. I was entranced the first chapter. I wanted to see Nell get away from the horrible Evan. I loved the romance and the hot and steamy moments that were so perfectly written. It was interesting to see some supernatural powers involved in the plot. I tried to read it in one night but my dear husband told me that the turning of the pages were driving him crazy so, I had to go to bed. I could not wait until I could crawl into bed and read it again. I am planning to read the whole trilogy again. I felt like I was living on Three Sisters Island. It was truly romantic.

Nora Roberts has done it again! Nell is running from her husband, and if he finds out she didn't really die, she's sure he'll finish the job. In her zigging and zagging a crossed the country, Nell comes to Three Sisters Island. It is here on the otherside of the country, that she will finally find what she has been looking for, home and family. She will learn on this little stretch of land that blood is thicker than water, the power of love, and that sometimes the magic was the last place you ever thought to look, inside yourself.

It is here on Three Sister's Island that Nell must stop running, for if she doesn't more than she could ever imagine will be lost forever. For something more evil than an abusive husband is stalking this quiet little island and the sister's three that protect it. It has waited 300 years for the protections placed upon this little island to fade and now the fate of the island, the sisters three, and all those that live upon the island are in the hands of a battered woman who is only just beginning to remember how to live again.

This is a great start to what is sure to be an interesting trilogy. Dance Upon The Air has just the right mix of magic, romance, intrigue and suspense. This trilogy will revolve around the three main female characters: Nell, Ripley, and Mia. This book focuses mainly on Nell. She is a wounded soul, yet she soon learns her true inner strength. Nell's romance with Zack is truly beautiful. He is such a beautiful man (inside and out!)
The only criticism I have of this book is that it begins a whole lot like the movie Sleeping With The Enemy. It does not detract from the book, but I wish the details would have been a little more original and not followed the movie SO closely. I cannot wait to read the second book and find out what happens to Ripley! She is such a cynical and dynamic woman, her romance should be very interesting!!

I love Nora Roberts and this book was no disappointment. I hav e read all three books in the trilogy and I love how all the characters are different and yet have a bond that is unbreakable. This is, of course, a romance book, and I suspend my reality in order to enjoy it. The amazing pull between the characters is sizzling, and Nora Roberts knows how to play it up to the fullest. I loved the heartbreak in the past and the way that these characters heal with the possibility of a future between them. This was my favorite book in the series, and as always, Nora Roberts delivers exactly what we want before we even know what that is.

Nora Roberts is the queen of light, airy romance. If you are looking for a series to curl up in front of the fire and feel warm and cozy with, the Three Sisters Island trilogy is a must-have.

Ms. Roberts does not disappoint in this first novel in the series. Dance Upon the Air is a great read in which we are introduced to the quaint Three Sisters Island and its wonderful year-round residents. A new arrival on the island revives old legends and lore, and the tail begins.

We are introduced to sweet Nell, running from something, but no one knows what. She is soon accepted as a permanent resident on the island, thanks to her fabulous cooking skills, and friendly personality.

But, will Nell's past come back to haunt her? Does she have a deeper connection to the island?

You'll have to read Dance Upon the Air to find out. The read is definitely worthwhile and an enjoyable Nora Roberts novel. If you are unfamiliar with Ms Roberts, this is a great way to become acquainted with her reading.

Enjoy!

I don't know if it's because Nora Roberts is so popular or so prolific that I just have a hard time believing her books can be as addicting as they always turn out to be. I am one of those TRUE romance fans that don't like suspense or thought so until Nora Roberts (AKA JD Robb) made me eat my words. I'm still pouting over that but gorging myself on her books all the same. And I detest myself for that part of me that still wants to cling to the belief that I am a PURE romance reader.

A few days after I finish one of her books (All 3 of the The BORN IN series books, Carolina Moon, Honest Illusions, Private Scandals, The Perfect Neighbor and all of JD Robbs "IN DEATH" series books), I continually tell myself I didn't really enjoy the book as much as I thought. Then I read another of her books and am amazed all over again and again.

When I picked up Dance upon the Air a few days ago, I just knew I would hate this book. A book about witches? What a bunch of hooey! I finished the book in less than 2 days. I couldn't wait to dive into her next book in the series, Heaven and Earth which I also devoured in less than 2 days! Now I can't wait to dig into Face the Fire.

Oh yes, I have mud all over my face but dang it, she can write a page turner! And she can make me like books on subjects that I don't think I care about. But now, I want to open my own eclectic bookstore on a nice island town like this 3 Sisters island. It makes me want to wish I could cook like Nell, have the presence, grace and walk like Mia and the fitness regiment of Reiley. And now I'm thinking, what's so hooey about a few nice witches? Why was I so closed-minded and so judgemental in the first place about a subject I knew squat about?

Nora Roberts has a wonderful ability to endear the reader into the world she creates and this Three Sisters Island trilogy is another example of that talent. I can resist her no longer, I surrender.(as I bury my face into another of her books)

p.s. If you want to try Nora but aren't into suspense, read the 3 Born in Series books or The Perfect Neighbor as I consider them to be more contemporary romance than romance/suspense.

I've been slowly making my way through everything Roberts has written, and to date, the Three Sisters Island trilogy is up there with my favorites. This book, the first in the trilogy is the best. Nell is the easiest of the sisters to connect with, and I found myself wishing I could visit her in the little yellow house and eat some of her cooking. The other two books are good, but this was by far my favorite of the three.

Let me just start out by saying, this book is a must read! I was a little disappointed in the ending, but the book was all around great!

It's about a girl that moves to Three Sisters Island to try to escape her past. She begins her life over, only to find out that the past will come back to haunt you.

The story is very well told. You feel the struggles & fear that Nell goes through. I laughed and cried and even sat on the edge of my seat while reading this book! I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! I will say again, I was a disappointed in the ending, but maybe it'll elaborate the details in Heaven and Earth. (I've just started reading it).
