| Could It Be...Perimenopause? : How Women 35-50 Can Overcome Forgetfulness, Mood Swings, Insomnia, Weight Gain, Sexual Dysfunction and Other Telltale Signs of Hormonal Imbalance | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
The decade before menopause, says Dr. Stephen R. Goldstein, is a time of profound change--both physically and emotionally--yet many women don't realize this. They may try to ignore subtle-to-bothersome symptoms such as erratic menstruation, "free-floating anxiety, inability to concentrate," forgetfulness, weight gain, sexual difficulties, and insomnia, when they could be effectively treating these problems. Unfortunately, not all doctors recognize perimenopause or know how to treat its symptoms, which may lead them to discount patients' complaints, or worse, suggest unnecessary treatments--including hysterectomies. That's where Could It Be ... Perimenopause? can help.In clear, supportive prose, Goldstein offers no-baloney advice. "Today's perimenopausal women has neither the time nor the patience to go through four to fifteen years of symptoms without relief," he says. He fully delineates the roles of various hormones, how to determine if you're in perimenopause or not, as well as how to treat the various symptoms to gain control over your life. He's a big advocate of low- and ultra-low-dose birth-control pills: "There is nothing inherently advantageous about bursting the capsule of your ovary and having to repair it each month. There's no reason for having fluctuating levels of hormones floating around unless you want to have a baby." He also recommends some natural and herbal treatments (he tells which ones are more appropriate for menopausal or postmenopausal women, and which are worthless or even dangerous). He's also a big promoter of sonohysterography, a type of ultrasound test that he says could prevent up to three-fourths of all emergency-room visits made by women with excessive uterine bleeding. With added resources, including URLs for recommended newsgroups, Web sites, and medical databases, along with information about the very latest in treatments (such as crinone, a natural progesterone gel), Goldstein's created an enormously beneficial reference for both women and health-care providers who could stand to brush up on this topic.

Perimenopause is a marketing construct, intended to sell drugs, books and other products by instilling self-doubt and insecurity. Resist the effort to pathologize everything about women's bodies.

I really liked this book's approach to the subject matter. I found a lot of information in here that was helpful and timely. This book is a keeper for my home library.

Well, as one of the previous reviewers said, there were just too many things about this book that were not to like. When you're on a mission of trying to discover "what's happening," you need facts uncluttered by opinion, etc. Would not recommend.

Everyone else raves but I really really didn't like this book. Here are my reasons:
- he rejects all herbal remedies because they have not been FDA approved. I admit there are problems with quality control and no you shouldn't ask the check out clerk for advice on natural remedies but there are other educated practitioners, even doctors, who can give advice on natural remedies. - he is too quick to recommend a hysterectomy. While he says that you shouldn't have a D & C to try to identify excessive bleeding if you're going to have any surgery you might as well have a hysterectomy, forget myomectomy or any other less invasive surgery. I'm quite happy that I got rid of my fibroids with a myomectomy and still have my uterus - thank goodness my doctor didn't agree with this book. - the book is 4 years old now and doesn't take into consideration the recent studies which show that HRT may not be the right way to go. I'd like to know how those studies affect his recommendation that all perimenopausal women take low dose birth control pills - he seems to have only one answer for perimenopause and that's low dose birth control pills. I'm always suspicious of complicated problems that have only one answer. I'm still looking for a book that I feel comfortable with. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-15 01:03:44 EST)

I spent three years in misery suffering numerous symtpoms that couldn't be isolated by my doctors. Many times, I was told that these symptoms were essentially psychosomatic, or related to my weight, or stress from work. Then my husband found this book in a bookstore while on a business trip...just flipping through it, he immediately recognized the problems that I was experiencing. This book made such a difference for me. It helped me get through the final two years of my perimenopausal period and helped me learn how to manage the symptoms. If you think you might be approaching menopause now (or expect to be in the near future), I encourage you to get this book. It will make the next few years of your life much easier and give you peace of mind and body!

I really wasn't sure about this book just based on the cover. Boy was glad I changed my mind and purchased it! Like another reviewer I've read several books on the subject of perimenopause. None can compare to COULD IT BE...PERIMENOPAUSE? Dr. Goldstein has provided such a great service to those of us who are wondering what the heck is going on with our bodies and minds during this sometimes trying time. One of the sections that I was so glad to read is about dealing with symptons in a natural way. He asks, "Do you really want it natural or safe?" Dr. Goldstein brings up great points in answering this question. I realized what I wanted was safe and if at all possible natural. If anyone is contemplating surgery, get a copy of this book and read the section about this subject. It is very important and a REAL eye opener. I wish I had this book before I had surgery. This book really educates you and prepares you to ask more questions when visiting your OB/GYN.

Dr. Goldstein's book answered so many of the questions I had regarding the changes my body has undergone since turning 40. It never occurred to me that there were simple medical explanations with simple solutions. I particularly liked Goldstein's step by step analytical approach. Armed with information from the book when I met with my doctor (and my herbalist), I was able to ask the proper questions, accurately describe my symptoms, and receive effective treatment. It's nice to know that, no, I'm not going crazy, I'm a normal 41 year old woman experiencing perimenopause. A great read!

I am not the type to usually write reviews, but I feel very stronly about this book. I am thrilled to find this readable, educational, and friendly book which anticipates, and answers so many of the questions about why my 46 year old body is acting the way it is. This book has made me feel so much more in control of what is occurring physically. Education is power, and this book educated and empowered me. I have bought it for many of my friends, and I highly recommend it.

I've read a few books on this subject since and this is the only one which doesn't blame every ache or pain on a woman's hormones, but explains what symptoms can mean and how to know if it's really perimenopause or something else. Dr. Goldstein, an authority in the field. really understands women and the questions they ask. Finally we're hearing from a real M.D. who views the problem holistically. The chapter on RX for Black Moods was expecially helpful to me, and I liked the question and answer formula. Overall excellent information.

Awful book, poorly written, patronizing and insulting to women. Save your money and buy "Screaming to be Heard" by Elizabeth Vliet instead.

My doctor recommended this book and I'm so glad she did. It is full of helpful information, and unlike so many other books explains what your symptoms might mean in addition to perimenopause. I found real help here, and realistic options.

There are no false promises here, just well expressed, medical advice, as well as information about lifestyle changes and other healthful alternatives every woman can follow, from one of the top doctors in the field.
