For years, Mitch Rapp's bold actions have saved the lives of countless Americans. He has killed with impunity, tortured to avert disaster, and shown he will do whatever it takes to prevent terrorists from fulfilling their bloody wishes. His battles for peace and freedom have made him a hero to many, and an enemy to countless more. In the tangled, duplicitous world of espionage, there are those, even among America's allies, who want to see Mitch Rapp eliminated. They have decided the time has come.
Now, the powerful father of a dead terrorist demands vengeance in its simplest form -- an eye for an eye, and Rapp instantly becomes the target of an international conspiracy. This time, he must use all of his vigilance and determination to save himself before he can turn his fury on those who have dared to betray him.

The second of Vince Flynn's books read, and rated higher than the first largely because of a wish that we really had a few Mitch Rapp types taking care of us instead of relying on Janet Napolitano.

I loved this book! Flynn seems to get better with each of his novels. Some do not like all the detail he provides to set up the action, but I thrive on it. Flynn is a master at almost putting you into the plot, watching the action take place just a short step away. As a teacher of Political Science and International Relations for 34 years, I really appreciate the amount of research and back-ground work Flynn does for his books. First class!!

1. I've read several Vince Flynn books; all of which are good. However, this is the best one thus far (I haven't read them in order).
2. What else is there to say--> well written books, with a "24" type theme, that will be enjoyed by most. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-16 06:13:24 EST)

This is my 2nd Mitch Rapp book, but it was predicible, in that as soon as the reader learns that his wife is pregnant, we know without a shadow of doubt what the author plans for the wife, and ensuing actions by Mr. Rapp (what a name!)- as in "Don't give a rapp). Also, somewhat unbelievable are the actions of the [...]'s partner after their attack on Mitch. Truly not believable in the context of prior activities of this pair. However, overall, the book was fun to read, but, please, leave his wife alone. What's next, marrying his CIA boss and becoming a step-father to her son, with whom he has bonded? That would also not be believable. Read with tongue in cheek and suspended most belief.

This was the first Vince Flynn book I read, recommended by my father. Once I got through the sexual machismo section in the beginning, the story, character development, and plot became engrossing. I think my father said he could not put it down and finished it over an evening. It is that kind of book.
Since reading this, I ordered all the prior Flynn books and started in a logical release date order to come up to speed, just finishing the Fall 2008 Extreme Measures. All were great if not semi-prophetic in some cases, but Consent to Kill has the most grit and thrill. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-10-06 01:36:21 EST)

"Consent to Kill" is the second book of Vince Flynn's I've read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Flynn's hero Mitch Rapp is a great character, and I found myself laughing when he confronted a particular politician and smacked him upside the head with a folder.
Flynn writes a great thriller. It keeps you wanting to read more. He mixes military technology, fast paced action, and politics to engage the reader in this violent political tale. I don't want to give the story away, but there was an event, a key event of the story, that surprised me. I was not expecting it, and it actually made me mad for a bit. I didn't want it to happen. This is the mark of a good author, he gets you to care about the characters and story. I will tell you that in this chapter of Mitch Rapp's life, he finds himself not only battling with terrorists from afar, but also dealing with those in Washington D.C. that would rather see him reigned in, or maybe eliminated altogether? I just discovered the works of Vince Flynn and Lee Child this summer, and they have both quickly entered the ranks with some of my favorite authors such as Brad Thor, Barry Eisler, and Stephen Hunter. With all of these authors, I read the books for escapism enjoyment. I definitely enjoyed "Consent to Kill." The book is longer than many thrillers, but I didn't mind at all. I enjoyed it all and am looking forward to the next Mitch Rapp adventure I read. After reading the rave reviews for this series, I took the plunge. I enjoyed the creative story and the characters here, but I was a bit surprised at the author's sometime sophomoric writing style, which distracted from the story. Maybe this book just needed some more editing. Many of the sentences seemed like they were written by a high-schooler. In comparing this author to writers such as Michael Connelly, Lee Child, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais, and Carl Hiassen, I find the level of writing in this book to be much less "crafted." So, while the story was fun, I did not 'savor" the writing ability, as I do with some other authors.

What a Powerhouse Political Thriller! I have read Flynn's books in succession, with a couple more to go. This one is the Cream of the Crop so far! This one should be made into a movie. The ending is perfect!
If you think 24's Jack Bauer is a Bad A_ _, multiply him times 10 and you have Mitch Rapp! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-10-06 01:36:21 EST)

Despite its unnecessary length and the inclusion of way too much background information, I almost liked this book. "Consent to Kill" is about 250 pages too long. For the first 200 pages I patiently read along -- waiting for the story to begin. But it never began in earnest. It was all "background," "personality/character development," and "stage-setting" for the ultimate assassination attempt which came much later. There is way too much inane dialogue between and among some of the key and minor players. Floyd's attempts to give assassins a conscience or to humanize them with love interests, pregnant wives and "normal" urges to have a real life fail.
So the first flaw here is that what might be an excellent 275 - 300 page story was turned into a 650 page tome. Is it a recent trend in this genre to regale the reader with unnecessary, even if well-written, background material on each and every character in such excessive detail? I see this tendency in other writers, and I don't like it. I prefer reading a story that begins on page 1, not page 201. At about page 210 in this book, I realized that this story was going to be about one attempted assassination (and accompanying fallout, revenge and collateral damage), populated by a cast of 10 to 12 players, none of which, by the way, had a scintilla of appeal or charm or likeability, and whose background was abundantly over-established. I really thought it strange that everyone in this story was fundamentally unlikable, incapable of experiencing anything beyond their own selfish, mostly evil, desires. All were despicable or worse. Well, there were a few innocents in this story, such as the young boy, but in very minor roles and way too few. They are all on the wrong side of normal morality. Worse, there is not a shred of humor or irony in this book, to say nothing of its total lack of memorable lines, redeeming thoughts or humanizing philosophy, except for the sappy ending. The story plays on all of the reader's real and imagined biases, prejudices and wrong opinions, especially those of Saudis and Arabs in general. The Americans are hardly people to admire, either. In a dispiriting sense, this book perpetuates racism and racist stereotypes. While it's a well-written story, it reads like it was actually written to be sold for its screen or TV-rights, say, for example, to the very successful and well-filmed British spy series, MI-5, also known as "Spooks." Nonetheless, the story moves forward more-or-less quickly with the added creative twist of Flynn involving the reader in the personalities and the minor appeal of the 2 key women characters (even though writing about women is probably not his forte). The strength of personality and backbone that motivates these women to "do the right thing," despite all of the worthless men surrounding them, is clever. Not one of the men in the story, including the main character Mitch Rapp, would I ever want to shake hands with, let alone spend 5 minutes with. The oversimplified, naïve view of national and world politics, boggles the mind -- until the reader remembers that this is a novel, a fictional view of a complicated real world. There are a few coincidental events too many, a few law-breaking episodes too many, a few unbelievable murder scenes too many, and a few too many required leaps of faith to make the story work. But, all-in-all, and rather begrudgingly, I admit I almost enjoyed the book. I just wished I could have liked just one of the characters! And, really, do assassins and their handlers ever actually acquire a conscience? (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-03 06:06:15 EST)

Well, i have to say that, of all the "Mitch Rapp" novels, this is by far the best one, imho. As an avid reader, and mostly espionage books, i love getting into a cat and mouse game. This novel delivers the goods. Fans of this type of novel will of course be familiar with others of the genre, notably Brad Thors' superspy, Scot Harvath.
If you are a fan, you'll love this series. One can only imagine if Harvath and Rapp ever got together to take down some baddies !! Like 24 Jack Bauers together. Speaking of which, this novel is absolutely as cinematic as it gets...it has Hollywood blockbuster written all over it. As you read, you cant help but think "what a great movie this would be". It really is sublimely good. If you like Action/Drama in your thrillers, this delivers in spades. Buy it, thank me later. Enjoy your read. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-04-24 20:04:59 EST)

This was my first Flynn book but it certainly won't be my last! I travel a lot so having something entertaining on my Kindle at all times is a must and Flynn meets fits the bill (and then some!).
I found I couldn't put it down so you may want to make sure you start reading on a work night. If you like good, fast paced reads, then check Flynn out; Cussler, Paterson and Johansen are among my favorites and I now I've added Flynn to that list. I just bought 4 others. Enjoy! Fete of Death
"Consent to Kill" is one of Vince Flynn's better thrillers starring the brutal CIA hit man Mitch Rapp. Flynn is neither a great writer nor an exceptional stylist, but he tells a great high-concept story, which is a sine qua non in the thriller genre. In "Consent to Kill," Rapp is put on a hit list by a Middle Eastern potentate seeking revenge. Throughout the book Rapp must survive attempts on his life and also attempts by duplicitous power-hungry American politicians to sully his reputation in Washington. One assassin in particular, a German who doesn't fail his assignments, has Rapp's number. He even succeeds in killing Rapp's wife--by accident. Rapp was supposed to die in her place. Speaking of revenge, now Rapp has revenge on his mind. Devastated by his wife's loss, he seeks her murderer with a single-minded ruthlessness that only Rapp could be capable of. This is a deft thriller that in many ways reminds me of Frederick Forsyth's classic "Day of the Jackal" with its intricate detailing of the manner in which a professional hit man goes about his business. --Bryan Cassiday, author of "Fete of Death" (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-06 08:21:51 EST)

America's hero CIA assassin Mitch Rapp along with CIA Director Irene Kennedy are unbeatable! They totally bypass the wimps in The Administration who are more concerned with pretenses than the reality of the war on terrorism. Namely the naive appeasers are Kennedy's new boss, Mark Ross, Director of National Intelligence as well as the Secretary of State and the Attorney General. The President doesn't wimp out. Basically the plot is about a Saudi Prince who puts out a $20 million contract to eliminate Rapp. Other Saudi royalty are also involved. The attempted murder is brokered by a former Stasi agent who comes up with a team of two fascinating killers who are recommended by a former KGB handler. The male/female team has a former member of the French Foreign Legion and his brilliant girlfriend. They nearly succeed in getting Rapp. Rapp recovers from serious wounds and dramatically gets rid of the bad guys. Tremendous, quick, gripping read even at 675 pages. I have enjoyed all books in this series. But think this one is the best.

From John Howard Prin, author of Secret Keeping: Overcoming Hidden Habits and Addictions
This is my first Vince Flynn book and it went well beyond my expectations. I found myself enjoying rebel-guy Mitch Rapp in the first couple hundred pages and the array of sleuthy characters and diverse international locations. It felt like a travelogue at times and a manual for professional assassins to follow, but with enough twists and surprises to pique my interest: like the French husband and wife assassin team and how their loving interaction sprinkled the narrative with real-life humanity. As I neared the end, I braced myself for what I thought would be a predictable bloody ending. Thankfully, it never came. Instead I felt real pathos for the tragedy to Mitch's wife and how the pregnancy of the French woman literally and figuratively birthed a change in Mitch, layering his internal dilemma with genuine humanity. CONSENT TO KILL packed enough pleasurable surprises to qualify as a fine genre novel. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-18 09:58:31 EST)

Wow! This is our first novel by Vince Flynn that we have read - and it certainly won't be our last!
What a find. Vince Flynn is a fantastic writer in this genre. Just with this book alone, we like him better than Tom Clancy. Flynn juggles action/adventure and political intrigue with aplomb. Not an easy feat. Mitch Rapp is a CIA operative that actually works outside the web of counter terrorism task forces, the ultimate assassin for the USA that takes care of dirty business that not even the president knows all about. This book shows that Vince Flynn can handle solid and numerous characters that are not the typical, but interesting and deep. The husband and wife team of assassins, the showing of their internal strife while on a mission, was a breath of fresh air in the literary world. Not often you see solid character writing like this for the bad guys. (You even start to feel for the bad guys.) We have just purchased 5 more books from this author, and will be reviewing them as soon as we can get to them. So many great writers and books out there! If you haven't discovered Vince Flynn yet, and you like espionage-type adventure novels that Hollywood would salivate to make, then you need to try this author out. The story is predictable to a point. The novel very entertaining. If you know the character Mitch Rapp, you already know he will prevail. Unlike some other Rapp novels, his character is much more believable & human in this one. The international tale is nicely woven & written. There's a good little twist used to finish the story

Although I read the book when it first came out, I'm now enjoying the incomparable reading of the audio book by George Guidel. He is the best voice I've heard, with the possible exception of Kenneth Branagh doing the 1st Narnia book. As far as the book is concerned: SPOILER ALERT: Thank heaven the atrocious wife Anna is no longer cluttering up the bookscape with her insufferable ego and disrespect for her husband and his work. From her tendency to be late (which invariably means that the person who is late considers her own time important and yours of no value) to her attempts to worm secrets out of the man who die to protect her (and all of us), there were times when I wanted to blow her up myself. She may have served a purpose in showing that even superman Mitch has a weak spot in his brain by getting involved with this gal, but gosh I'm glad she's gone. For that alone, this book would be worth the money. I've read every one of Vince Flynn's books and I've preordered the newest one. Go Vince!

So many of the other reviewers have done a wonderful job of briefly telling you what the story is all about; so I won't duplicate their effort. But, being a big fan of Vince Flynn in general, and Mitch Rapp, in particular, I urge you to RUN, not WALK, to grab this novel. It is absolutely FABULOUS! The best of all of them so far and probably pretty hard to top going forward...but, then, that's what Vince Flynn does so well. The character development is fine; and Mitch has an emotional side that we have not really seen before, and you will be genuinely surprised at the heart that beats within him. There are few surprises when it comes to what Mitch will (and has to) do but, nevertheless, you will find yourself shocked at some of his actions...great finesse! Let others give away the story, I just want to give this book away to anyone I care about who loves modern-day terrorist thrillers. And if you can listen to it on Audio Books, you get the extra "hit" of it being read by George Guidall. Nobody does these readings better! Reading Vince Flynn is, for me, like waiting for a Wilbur Smith novel to come out (eg: the Courtney series or the Egyptian series with Taita)...I hang there just waiting for the new book to pop out. Grab this book, sit back and enjoy yourself thinking: "Go ahead...make my day!"

This is the second Vince Flynn book I couldn't get through. Memorial Day was great. Then, Term Limits was a disaster. Consent to Kill was absolutely atrocious. It seemed the entire book consisted of the assassins going back and forth trying to decide how much money they would get for killing Mitch Rapp. It read like drivel that Flynn put out to try and keep squeezing the Mitch Rapp machine. I've given him enough of my time. Mr. Flynn, I bid you farewell.

This novel gets my "Razzz!" of the year award. I see all of the 5 star reviews and can only explain them by supposing that the people reading Flynn's books are looking for this particular sort of nonsense.
The hero is a HERO and a one of those bully boys for the President that take care of business that can't be left to those pinkos in Congress. If you have a loose sense of reality, and are among the 29% who still give Bush a positive approval rating (perhaps a redundant statement), this is the book for you. If not give it a miss and try some Lee Child, or the new novel "Volk's Game". (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-25 23:39:18 EST)

This is my first Mitch Rapp novel but it won[t be my last. A great story about the classic rogue CIA agent, but rogue for the good guys. And the book serves up rough justice on an assortment of bad characters, from imam apostles of hate, to inside-the-beltway paper-pushers, to amoral terrorist enablers. SPOILER ALERT. I mean, when you have the protagonist go to Saudi Arabia, strap a bomb vest on the evildoer's son, then blow up the son and the bad guy while flipping off a security camera, there isn't really anything more to do to satisfy the bloodlust of the reading audience, myself included. I only worry about one thing, which is that I share many of the geopolitical attitudes of the former East German bad guy. I hope Flynn isn't trying to tell me something.

I've only read 2 Vince Flynn books, but they've been enough to pique my curiousity and now I will go back and read the earlier Mitch Rapp novels to catch up on this assassin's history. I like Flynn's writing for the sometimes atypical bents he puts into the characters. Mitch Rapp is an assassin, straight-up, and almost never conflicted about his job. He is NOT a Jack Ryan (as some have likened) and we rarely get any moral pause in the action in these books. If you're squeamish, be forewarned that Flynn does detail the kills. I was shocked a time or two in the first book - Flynn took me a little past my comfort zone - but now know what to expect. I would liken it to a roller coaster you've never ridden before. A twist or turn will be too much - but then you get to the end and yell, "Wow - that was great! Let's go again!" The last few chapters of Consent to Kill are fantastic. Flynn does not take Rapp where I thought Rapp would surely go. Supporting characters are also terrific and you're left hoping to have them reappear in future Rapp stories or even to get stories of their own. Love Rapp's loyal friends. Wouldn't surprise me if Flynn has one or two turn out to be not so loyal in future books, but hey, let's just enjoy the "good guys" while we can. They kick butt (and never kiss any either!). I highly recommend this read!

This is my second Vince Flynn novel. (Memorial Day was first) There is some need to get the sequence of when you read them right, but it is not critical. It has you speculating on outcomes from the beginning, making it very tough to put down. Flynn is not afraid to hurt the good guys or make the bad guys successful, and in the end, you are curiously pleased with the outcome. Good stuff.

Very good, fastpaced reading. The author keeps things moving and something is always happening among the key players. There are quite a few characters but they all have distinct personalities and are easy to keep track of. I like a book that understands we are at war and then has the hero actually fight back. Unfortunatly in an era where Force Protection is the mantra of the US armed forces we don't fight all out and we certainly would never fight dirty, the NYT would find out. I just read online that some Marines fought their way out of an ambush in Afganistan and the headline is it's a crime against humanity because civilians got killed. That's why we are going to lose. Read this book and pretend there really is a special unit that is fighting to win, it will do you good. I read it during a business trip to Tripoli, Libya, they would love it because they really do hate the Saudis (who are the principle bad guys in this book). I plan to buy more of the series.

Vince Flynn books are great reading. Escape the drudgery of the work week by staying up past your bedtime because you can't stop flipping the pages of this book. Consent to Kill is one of the better in the series. These books are fiction, not history lessons. Lighten up and enjoy yourself. I've read four, passing time in airports and through flight delays, fully entertained.

Vince Flynn Mitch Rapp novels are Islamic apologetic pabulum , they are the heart and soul of modern pulp fiction, If you are able to detect the islomoplogetics in "24" you now know where to comes from , the mind of Flynn whose knowledge of Islamic scripture is as deep as piss on a hot rock in the sun. They are entertaining for the most part , but irritating , he prints the CAIR party line. If his knowledge of the "inner workings" of anything are equal to his Quranic knowledge you wont be getting much for but a fun read, no insight, His story line wouldn't suffer if he just didn't offer his opinion about Islam alleged hijacking.

I like the story line. He has a great way initiating suspense and keeping the story rolling. The writing could stand a little polishing and that's why I gave it a four. I feel the best has yet to come with this series.

This book was by far the best yet. I have yet to read An Act of Treason however.
For the first time, I think ever, I actually was brought to tears in this story, especially the ending. Vince wrote an incredible story and gave Mitch more character than I thought he would ever have. Thanks Vince. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-03-09 08:44:56 EST)

The latest in the great line or Mitch Rapp novels. In my opinion this is the best series of books on the market. In every one of these novels there is non-stop action and twists every time you think you understand whats happenning. Vince Flynn allows you to pick up anyone of these books and began reading without being lost on the backstory from the other books, but he also does a great job of pulling in details from the books before it.

Vince Flynn is a favorite author of my husband and myself. We have read all his books and anxiously await the announcement of a new one. We recommend all his books to our friends and tell them that they must read them in order because of recurring characters.

This is my first Vince Flynn novel and I am excited to see there a more Mitch Rapp books to catch up on. I loved the protagonist who is a dichotomy of cold-blooded assassin and warm, loving husband. Truthfully, when I started the book, I really didn't know if I would like it or even finish it. Espionage/political thrillers are not my favorite subgenre, but after the first few pages with the introduction of characters which I found a bit confusing, it became a page-turner. By chapter 3 all thoughts of not finishing the book flew out the window. Only the soap-opera-ish ending jarred a bit otherwise it was a first-rate read.

Can a professional killer have a soft side? Yes, he can, according to Vince Flynn's latest Mitch Rapp novel--his best to date.
Mitch Rapp is known and feared the world over for his daring exploits in the service of the CIA. He has many powerful friends, most notably the president of the United States. But in his work he has also managed to accrue a number of very powerful enemies. One of these is a Saudi prince who believes Rapp is responsible for the death of his son (referencing events that occurred in Flynn's previous novel, Memorial Day). The prince is determined to see Rapp brought down for his sins, so he hires a German contract killer to take care of the American once and for all. The German subcontracts the job to a pair of ruthless assassins who have a 100-percent success rate. What follows is a breathtaking international manhunt--but this time, the good guy is the target. Flynn spends most of his energy developing plausible action scenes rather than character depth, so readers are required to draw on snippets of information presented in previous books to discern certain characters' motivations and drives. Even so, the character of Mitch Rapp comes across loud and clear, as do his motives for personal revenge after his would-be assassins' first attempt on his life goes awry. One of Flynn's great strengths as a novelist is his ability to ascribe realistic and believable motives to his villains. As many scenes are written from the points of view of either the hired assassins or their Saudi backers as are from Mitch Rapp's perspective, with the result that by halfway through the book, we feel almost as sympathetic for the killers as we do for the protagonist target. Yet never does the narrative allow the reader to mistake the twisted values of the villains for anything other than what they ultimately are--pure evil. Consent to Kill is the most thoughtful of Flynn's thrillers so far, and the added depth pays off. By giving all the main characters a good deal of introspection, Flynn is able to explore the various moral dilemmas that arise in the field of international espionage. Mitch Rapp in most cases makes decisions that go against civilized sensibilities, but on the other hand, it's important to know that there are people in the real world who have to do difficult, unpleasant, and sometimes horrible things in the interest of national security and relative global stability. The closing scene leaves Rapp facing a choice between his humanity and his sense of human justice--and will leave readers panting for more. Flynn's books have almost no spiritual content, Christian or otherwise, and Consent to Kill fits right into that mold. On the other hand, the novels take place in a setting that necessarily includes moral right and wrong--and very often good and evil--as essential components of its underlying structure. The violence is often intense but never meaningless; language is sometimes harsh but rarely superfluous and never out of character. The world Flynn writes about is sometimes a bleak one, but it's the one in which we all live, and we all know it has its dark sides. Flynn writes about that darkness, but he doesn't dwell on it. Rather, he focuses on the efforts of a few dedicated individuals to bring some light and order into the chaos. Christians know that the only real hope for true light and order in the world comes from Jesus Christ--who came "as a light to shine in this dark world" (John 12:46)--a point Flynn's characters miss completely. But they do their best, given the purely secular worldview that the novels express, and the result is realistic and often moving entertainment. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-31 03:51:42 EST)
