I recently finished my first year at a top tier law school. This book did so much for me. If you are serious about getting good grades in CivPro, I think you should seriously consider this book. It forces you to understand the concepts and work through the rules, which is vital to doing well on exams. Don't stress about exams. This will help you.

This is by far one of the best supplements out there. It really explains everything and illustrates the material with great examples followed by explanations that are clear and concise. I would not recommend taking Civil Procedure without this book.

However, one caveat: this book may not cover all of the material in your Civ Pro class. Off the top of my head, I know it is missing chapters on class actions, Seventh Amendment right to jury trials, and interpleader (though it has impleader and other joinder topics). Despite this minor shortcoming, the material that is contained in this supplement is explained well and illustrated through great examples. Definitely a must have!

This is an essential supplement if you are going to understand this God-forsaken subject. I took off a star because there are some important subjects that are not covered in the book for some reason (For example, there is very little on Rule 24)

E&E is a great series. I've found many of the books helpful in supplementing law school reading that can be at times difficult to synthesize. However, Freer's supplement on civil procedure is unbeatable.

Law school is about knowing the rule and applying the facts. E&E is great at helping you to know the rule. However, it doesn't help you figure out how to apply the facts, especially in a way pertinent to law school exams. Freer's book is full of examples and frameworks that assure success on your CivPro exam. This is especially true of the frameworks he lays out for analyzing Personal Jurisdiction problems and Erie.

Buy Freer and you'll be happier going into your final.

This book was very helpful for reviewing each section as we went through them in class. The explanation sections are wonderful and the examples are very helpful for exam prep.

This book is a must read for anybody taking civil procedure. Glannon is the man.

I don't know what I would have done without this book. It really explained civil procedure succinctly and in a way that was easy to understand. The chapters on jurisdiction and the erie doctrine were very helpful. Seriously, I can't thank the author enough.

My professor recommended Glannon's Civ Pro book as a an additional resource. It was a great help in preparing for my exam in the course, primarily because of the examples and explanations. It's a little weak on the Service of Process discussion, but it covers personal jurisdiction really well. It's worth the buy.

Guys I wanted to ask is there any major differences between the 5th and 4th editions I noticed in the index they added in one more chapter on Discovery in the 5th edition but the rest of the 4th looks identical to the 5th edition. Any one have personal experience with this please let me know, you can reply back in another review here on Amazon. Thanks guys/gals!!

If you have a limited budget (and what student doesn't), this book is well worth the money. It clears the fog surrounding so much of Civil Procedure, and my professor even recommended it as a course supplement. I found it was helpful to read this at the beginning of a new subject in class, and it made the readings go faster. It is not an outline, and it isn't a book that's terribly useful two days before the final unless you want to read a few examples on a topic you're feeling shaky about. You have to use it throughout the semester to really get the most out of it, and it's easier to read in smaller chunks anyway. The rest of the books in this series are good, but this one was by far the best of the group, and if you can only buy one supplement your first year, buy this one.

This is an excellent exam aid for the student who has already put in at least some of the work of studying during the semester but wants to sharpen up in preparation for finals. It is not a quick-and-ready, black letter law outline. It provides thoughtful, accessible analysis of the significant areas of civpro and then provides excellent short essay questions and answers.

This book is best at helping you practice the analysis necessary for perfoming well on essay exams. It is the only study aid my civpro professor recommends, and it helped me secure A's both semesters.

I didn't find it helpful. The information in the book wasn't what I expected it to be from it's description.

A must have for any 1L. This book is a staple in the book library of any first-year law student taking civil procedure. It explains everything at an easily understandable level w/ examples and explanations to go along with it.

This and the sister volume for torts are must-have resources for any 1L. All of the topics this book covers are covered well, but its greatest value lies in its accessible treatment of discovery, personal and subject-matter jurisdiction, joinder, collateral estoppel, and res judicata. As reviewers above have said, this book (as well as others in the series) contributes to a detailed understanding of complex topics: it is neither a cheat nor a shortcut and was, in fact, required by my Civ Pro professor. Also, if you finish a section of this book and still want more examples, The Glannon Guide to Civil Procedure is just as helpful and accessible.

Loved this book, actually met Glannon when he came to my law school to visit one day and thanked him so much for writing it, all my friends use it too

Many friends and I used this book to aid in our studies of Civ Pro and it helped tremendously. It explains all of Civil Procedure in simple terms, then has pages worth of hypotheticals, most of which are tricky. It then gives you the answers to these hypos in simple terms. Glannon is always linked to Civ Pro for a reason. As a supplement (not a replacement for studies), this book is excellent.

I don't know how I would have survived Civil Procedure without this book. The chapters break down the major topics and provide easy explanations. The most valuable part is the Q&A section of each chapter, which tests your understanding and helps you grasp the "wrinkles" of various doctrines. It was especially helpful for personal jurisdiction, both throughout the semester and when studying for finals.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I had several Civ Pro study aides, but this is the only one I really found helpful.

All 1Ls need this book. I couldn't have gotten through civ pro without it. Makes it seem so simple (though don't be fooled...it's not!) I'm graduating this year and will DEFINITELY be using it to study for the bar as well.

If I didn't read this before lecture, I had no hope of understanding my prof (let's just say he wasn't the best teacher). My casebook was terrible, so I relied on Glannon to teach me everything. Apparently, my prof relied on him too, because he used on of Glannon's fact patterns on the final! BUY IT!!

This is a great book- very helpful in learning civ pro... This book simplifies much of the confusion. I definitely recommend it to anyone studying civ pro!

I was seriously considering applying to the law school last summer, and this book was one of those that I purchased to read along with LSAT prep books. The book had specific cases lined up in order from easy ones to more complicated, and it has questions of the end of each chapter, so that you can test yourself and your udnerstanding of material and how it applies in the courtroom. Also, I liked the sense of humor of the author; it was very encoureging in the beginning, and then kept peeking throught the book.
Howerver, please be beware of the used editions! I got my book for 1/3 of the list price, but every other word in my book was underlined with occasional comments on the sides. That being said, I was still able to read through the book, and learn and apply some of its consepts. I would recommend this book to all students who are consedering law school, as it was my case.

All of the E&E books I have read, especially this one, are disappointing. I guess they can be helpful if you haven't been attending class and need to learn the material for the first time. But I'm not sure why a student who has kept up in class would waste time with such a vague and introductory study guide. I recommend a more advanced, detailed and concise study guide. Also, the Q&As at the end of the chapters are too verbose for what they cover. Most of the answers are pages long, when they should be at most a few paragraphs, if not a few sentences.

Personally, I found Civil Procedure was the most difficult class in my first year of law school. I purchases several secondary sources but none were as helpful as Glannon's book. Glannon's book teaches by taking its reader through series of exercises that start with the basics then build into complex problems. Each problem comes with well written, complete, and comprehendible answers. The book uses helpful diagrams for explaining confusing topics such as the sometimes-confusing relationship between subject matter jurisdiction, person jurisdiction, and venue.

If you're taking Civ Pro, then you need this book. And that is all that needs to be said.

If you are taking Civil Procedure, this book should be your Bible. Period.

I am sorry I did not look for study aids b4 studying for the final exam. This book explained much more than the class ever did. I was confused about pers. Juris. (who wouldn't), and this book cleared it all up for me. No need to open any other book. Glannon is the best, I would (and did) buy all his books (too bad he did not write the whole series). Absolute must. I feel much better about my final. (and the lowest rating on this book is 4 stars!!)

Read this book before starting law school, and I was honestly confused as to why everyone always says Civil Procedure is such a hard class, when Glannon makes it soooo easy.

You know this a good supplement when even professors (who traditionally do not like supplements) are recommending is, as mine did.

I had the pleasure of taking Glannon's course in civil procedure. We used his Examples and Explanations book as the primary text. I highly recommend it. It is substantive and clearly written. In addition, the hypotheticals will leave you well prepared for an exam, no matter who your teacher.

Enough said. This, as well as all other E&E's are worth your time and money.

Glannon is great and this CivPro book is undeniably the king.

This book and several others are the gold standard for supplements in law school. And don't listen to what anyone says, reading these books is not somehow cheating yourself out learning information from the cases. Case-analysis is a vital skill but it's not what law school exams test you on. They test primarially how well you can synthesize information over the course of a semester and then apply that synthesized information to the analysis of a fact pattern in a four hour exam. The E&E series generally mimics this process very well, but the Glannon Civil Procedure book is heads above the rest.

It's such a talisman for first year law students that anyone who advises against it should be regarded with grave suspicion.

I owe an A+ in Civ Pro to this book. It's the best study guide available.
