(Hide Review...)  Should be required reading for Prophet/Thinkorswim users
Reviewer Permalink
I'm an active sell-side options trader and came across this book almost by accident. It is very well written and filled with lots of current examples of the most common and reliable chart patterns. I have no connection to the author or company, but I have a retail account at Thinkorswim and find the Prophet charts excellent, even as a more advanced trader.

The book should be required reading for anyone that uses Prophet charts, as the book lists lots of suggested settings which are only relevant if you use the product. Specifics aside, it is still an excellent book and much easier to read than most of the other ones out there, charting can be a very dry but important subject to study, this book is highly recommended for the beginning and intermediate technical trader.

Good stuff.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent Resource for Technical Analysis
Reviewer Permalink
As a reader of Tim's blog for the last few years, I finally bought his book and am glad I did. Tim's approach to Technical Analysis is simple, yet his concepts really do work. He focuses on just a few of the main TA tools and he really explains each concept in an easy-to-understand language. It was a very refreshing and engaging read after reading other books on TA which confounded me with the numerous concepts that all jumbled into each other after a while. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn Technical Analysis, as well as anyone looking to expand their knowledge.

This is a must read book for anyone that wants to make money in the markets. Tim makes difficult topics easy to understand with his clear and often witty dialog. He not only explains the technical side but also how the charts reveal investor sentiment. Worth every penny and more.

(Hide Review...)  The Best Charting Book I've Read.
Reviewer Permalink
I have been studying trading with a very good and well known trading education company and thought I had a really good handle on charting, candlesticks, price patterns, etc. Tim's book takes reading and understanding a chart to the next level. I bought the book to really hone my fibonacci skills but I've learned more just in reading, testing and charting a simple trendline than I thought was possible. This book is not cheap...but if one thing can be said...it could be priced at 10 times the price and would still be a bargain!!! Whether you are a beginning intermediate or experienced trader, you will learn from Tim's insights and years of charting experience. I highly recommend it...even if you don't use Prophet charts.

This is a good users manual for the Profit Source Software which is bundled with the Investools data service. If you don't use Profit Source then you can skim over the user parts. The author of the book is the creater of the Profit Source software. Because of that he seems very qualified in his explanations of techical analysis. I would recommend this book as an excellent introduction to technical analysis, even if you don't use Profit Charts.

Reviewer Permalink
In "Chart Your Way To Profits", Tim Knight takes the intricacies of Edwards & Magee technical analysis, and updates it in a conversational, user-freindly format. Hundreds of real-life chart examples are utilized, as are trading tips from a veteran individual trader. This is a book where new insights can be gleaned with multiple readings, and one you will want to keep by your computer for constant reference while analyzing stock charts, and during trading hours.
You don't have to use Prophet Charts to get great value from this book, but if you do, the book doubles as the best 400+ page user's manual you could ever ask for. And for those who don't know, the Prophet charting platform is available with certain online brokers without having to pay for it.
Definitely five stars, and highly recommended for any level trader.

(Hide Review...)  Good book but too much "How to use Prophet Software".
Reviewer Permalink
I agree, with last reviewer how to use the Prophet Software within the pages of the book. The author should have placed all the Prophet advertising, subscriber to the author's charting website, how to use the software toward the back section of the book. I never use Prophet software since there are many other professional charting software out there that does even a better job than just using website charts.

This book has some good easy to follow information on charting that can be useful and is quite simple to understand.

A better book to purchase is "Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" by Robert D. Edwards and John Magee ,since this is the best book on charting and charting patterns which was originally published back in 1948. This is like the bible of Technical Analysis. I prefer the 5th Edition and you may be able to get it used on amazon.

(Hide Review...)  Dedicated too much to Prophet, but a good value, nonetheless
Reviewer Permalink
This book is written primarily for use with the author's charting software (Prophet) and spends quite a bit of time highlighting it's features. When he starts to explain the chart patterns and the reasons the market created that pattern, you could be using any software. This is where the book shines.

Roughly 1/3 of the book explains Prophet Charts. Basically a manual. That part should be available online to users of the software.

Once you get past the manual, and the chart analysis begins, there is a lot of value. Tim explains chart patterns in a simple, (relatively) jargon free manner. Every topic has several examples to make it very clear. He also explains the reason the pattern came into existence in the first place, adding even more clarity to the topic. I found this part to be very useful.

I feel this book is suited to anyone who uses Prophet Charts, but that info should have been included with the software. Paying for the manual irked me a bit. I did find value in the charts, and assuaged my irritation with my increased knowledge and comfort with technical analysis. Definitely worth it, just be aware.

I bought this book in order to learn how to use the Prophet Charting Tools. The book provided an excellent and clear summary for this purpose.
Aside from this application, Knight's explanations provide very useful background for understanding how to exploit the bear side of the market, which tends to be favored by Knight. If you are uncomfortable in investing on the short side but want to learn more, this is a good place to begin.

I was one of the first to read Tim's book and I have to say I have read it cover to cover 3-5 times and go back to major chapters on a daily basis. As a successful trader I use all resources possible to get an edge and Tim's book gives you the edge we all are looking for. There is decision making put on the reader to challenge them to get better at using CHARTS as a way to succssfully navigate the markets and even though we do not see the markets in the same way ...the classic style and easy read of ALL CHARTS make the book a MUST BUY !!!

If you are in the business or just starting to trade , Chart Your Way To Profits is a book that needs to be near your computer during these times where all resources are needed to be profitable. No one does charts or explains them better than Tim Knight in this book. I am looking forward to many more from this great talent.

I have read the book cover to cover and now it's near my computer - to support concepts displayed by both Tim and other technicians who are reading the road ahead. Excellent
Book, easy to read and understand.

This book covers a lot of technical territory; yet,it is written in an enjoyable conversational style that makes it a standout among reference books and painless to read. Many of the "whys" for chart patterns are covered, helping to bolster intuitive interpretation of price movements. This is a must read for anyone that has access to Java charts or Prophet charts, but anyone that uses interactive charting (complimentary from most brokers and many free websites) would benefit exponentially. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to try to enter and exit trades at the most opportune times.

Knight covers using chart patterns for technical analysis exhaustively and completely. He covers Prophet Charts extensively, which is not surprising since he is founder and continuing principal architect of that software. His book is especially useful for Prophet Chart subscribers who have access to market data through the Investools and ThinkorSwim investing and trading (respectively) providers.
For those who disdain technical analysis in favor of fundamental analysis, a careful reading of this book convinces that you don't have to believe in technical analysis but you can't ignore it.
The book contains an e-mail address for the author, and concludes with a "Practical Guide to Trading" chapter.

I found out about Tim Knight's new book, "Chart Your Way To Profits: The Online Trader's Guide to Technical Analysis", from reading his blog (which by the way REALLY ROCKS). And, boy am I glad I found this book. It would not have appeared on my standard Amazon lists, so I figure this is fortune (i.e., $$$$) calling.

I've skimmed the book, and found lots of topics of interest. As an INVESTools student, I have already been using the new ProphetCharts charting software for about 3 months. I thought I knew how to use it. I'm finding features of the software I didn't know existed (I won't bore you with my lack of knowledge, get the book and see for yourself).

And I'm already getting a feel for how a professional trader uses charts. This is the real reason I got the book. Reading Tim's blog every day, he includes a LOT of relevant charts, but little reasoning about "why he created the chart the way he did". Reading his book is becoming a desk reference, helping me to understand why he created the chart the way he did, which is also helping me create my charts.

This is a must-have book for any INVESTools student, ar any investing student that wants to start "playing like the big boys". It is an easy reading book, filled with examples and ideas. There is even a little humor, which makes remembering the concepts easier. I'm going to read this an hour every night, but not before bed (it would keep me up, and make me want to go to the computer and try some of the charting techniques on some of my current trades).

(From Page 141)

"When prices violate a trendline, however, it should normally be heeded. To illustrate this point imagine yourself driving a car down a deserted highway. Since you want to understand the concept of trendlines well, you decide to not look at the road ahead but simply open your door and keep your eye on the median line. You have no idea how the road will twist or turn or whether it will continue straight. . .For a while, the yellow line whizzes by more or less in the same place. It sometimes move a little away from the car, but it soon returns to be just outside the driver's door. Suddenly, the median line moves underneath your car, disappearing from sight. You'd better look up quick to see what's happening, because the road must be turning!"

The above is the kind of zippy and delightful writing that you will be reading if you purchase this book. I know that if I'm in this car, I want Tim in the passenger seat providing useful advice for the profits and potential pitfalls ahead. He's the first to say that technical analysis is not a be all end all and provides appropriate cautionary advice. The book has a pleasing conversational tone that de-mystifies technical analysis.

I'm not a trader, nor am I an expert in technical analysis. But, I am an investor who wants useful tools in my arsenal. Technical analysis is one such tool. Beginners will find this book accessible with Tim's straightforward and engaging writing style. If you are a user of Prophet.net (which I am not), you will find many tips on using this service. For non-users, you can skip over these brief sections and immediately dive into the meat and potatoes with lots of gravy.

I can still remember that morning a few years ago... I woke up to see that one of my stocks had jumped over 100% overnight! This beauty, WAVX, happened to be one of Tim Knight's stock picks.
Over the 6 years that I've worked at Prophet, I have seen a number of his "Dish," "Cup and Handle," or "Head and Shoulder" patterns experience massive moves. I won't say that I've always been brave enough to follow his recommendations, but I will say that he is really passionate about charting, Technical Analysis, and Prophetcharts.
