Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

“I rehabilitate dogs. I train people.” —Cesar Millan

There are at least 68 million dogs in America, and their owners lavish billions of dollars on them every year. So why do so many pampered pets have problems? In this definitive and accessible guide, Cesar Millan—star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—reveals what dogs truly need to live a happy and fulfilled life.

From his appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show to his roster of celebrity clients to his reality television series, Cesar Millan is America’s most sought-after dog-behavior expert. But Cesar is not a trainer in the traditional sense—his expertise lies in his unique ability to comprehend dog psychology. Tracing his own amazing journey from a clay-walled farm in Mexico to the celebrity palaces of Los Angeles, Cesar recounts how he learned what makes dogs tick. In Cesar’s Way, he shares this wisdom, laying the groundwork for you to have stronger, more satisfying relationships with your canine companions.

Cesar’s formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline, and affection, in that order. Taking readers through the basics of dog psychology and behavior, Cesar shares the inside details of some of his most fascinating cases, using them to illustrate how common behavior issues develop and, more important, how they can be corrected.

Whether you’re having issues with your dog or just want to make a good bond even stronger, this book will give you a deeper appreciation of how your dog sees the world, and it will help make your relationship with your beloved pet a richer and more rewarding one.

Learn what goes on inside your dog’s mind and develop a positive, fulfilling relationship with your best friend

In Cesar’s Way, Cesar Millan—nationally recognized dog expert and star of National Geographic Channel’s hit show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan—helps you see the world through the eyes of your dog so you can finally eliminate problem behaviors. You’ll learn:

• What your dog really needs may not be what you’re giving him

• Why a dog’s natural pack instincts are the key to your happy relationship

• How to relate to your dog on a canine level

• There are no “problem breeds,” just problem owners

• Why every dog needs a job

• How to choose a dog who’s right for you and your family

• The difference between discipline and punishment

• And much more!

Filled with fascinating anecdotes about Cesar’s longtime clients, and including forewords by the president of the International Association of Canine Professionals and Jada Pinkett Smith, this is the only book you’ll need to forge a new, more rewarding connection with your four-legged companion.

Also available as a Random House AudioBook

From the Hardcover edition.
Fans of the National Geographic Channel's The Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan will be grateful for Cesar's Way, an accessible guide to help new and current dog owners better understand the needs of their beloved pets. If you are not yet a fan, try to catch a couple of episodes of the remarkable show--you will be amazed, impressed, and motivated to create a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with your dog. In Cesar's Way, Cesar explains that dogs are not complicated, and despite what various owners think--not human. They rely on three key elements in their lives: exercise, discipline, and affection (in that order). "Problem dogs" can be attributed to "problem owners," owners who don't understand and misinterpret their dog's behavior. Cesar's Way is really a training program for dog owners, with chapters devoted to understanding the "power of the pack," taking responsibility for "how we screw up our dogs," and learning how to manage aggression. Cesar's book (a must-have for new and old dog owners) moves beyond basic obedience school techniques, and teaches owners how to change unwanted behavior by better understanding their "best friends." --Daphne Durham

Cesar Millan's Top 5 Tips for Going to the Dog Park

1. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered, has all her shots, and is in good health. Under no circumstances should you bring a sick dog to a dog park!

2. Do not use the dog park as a substitute for the walk! If you drive to the park, leave your car a block away and take your dog on a vigorous walk of at least thirty-five minutes to drain some of her energy. Never take an over-excited dog to the park.

3. While at the park, don't "punch out" on your calm-assertive leadership. Be aware of your dog at all times, and take responsibility for her behavior.

4. A calm-submissive dog will not attract another dog's aggression--but an excited dog, a weak, timid dog, or an aggressive dog can become a fight-magnet.

5. Know your dog! If your dog has poor social skills, is overly fearful or is dog aggressive, or if you have not yet established your calm-assertive leadership with your dog, find a more controlled way to introduce her to the company of other dogs, such as "play dates" with one or two other dog owners.

Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

I've been reading his books slowly. I have so many books to read so I'm savoring him. I've enjoyed learning about his background growing up in Mexico and coming to this country to persue his dream and his consequent success. What I've learned I've shared with the rest of the family who find him interesting. Why no one else ever considered the psychology of dogs but Cesar Milan is remarkable. It took a young man growing up on a farm with working dogs to bring his experience and observations to dog training. I'm not even a dog person; I have always lived with cats. Recently I moved in with my daughter and granddaughters. They have a beagle who has a few bad habits that I'm trying to deal with so I began watching Cesar's show. And that's when I discovered this body of little known knowledge and found it fascinating. And then I learned that there were books. I haven't read enough about correcting the problems and I don't know if I will have any support from the rest of the family but I have found discovered a new interest-dog psychology. Thank you Cesar Milan.

Having seen Cesar on TV, I was a bit disappointed in this book after reading a few chapters. It seems to go on and on and on and on about the same thing - being the leader and giving off calm-assertive energy. OK! OK! We get the point!! However, I LOVE to watch Cesar and he is right on the money about dogs. I just wish it was more info on working with my dog than his philosophy (even though he is 100% right).

I enjoyed reading this book. Although I didn't always agree with everything, there is much merit in what Cesar teaches. I do notice the difference that exercise makes in my dog's disposition. I don't have time to do as much of the exercise as he suggests, but I now make it an important part of my day to make sure we get our walk done!

Whether you use this as a dog training guide, or get some tips from it, it is easy to read and very engaging!

This is an excellent book, it all makes sense. Yep, I was one of those people who spoiled the dog and didn't get all the responses I expected - although never a red-zone dog lucky me! My new pup is happier then ever. It's an eye opener. I'm sure some people have a problem with the fact that they may be creating the issues their dogs have (and that they could be wrong in the "training" they're doing), most do not want to take responsibility for their own faults/health etc. so to take responsibility for their animals....this would be tough. Great reading for all dog owners.

I wasn't, and still ain't, mentally ready to listen to Cesar. Maybe it's because I'm a stupid, spoiled American. I pay the mechanic and he fixes my car. But it turns out that there's all kinds of ongoing maintenance that I need to perform on my car - check the tire air, change the wiper blades (yeah! change the wiper blades!), and so on. Listening to Cesar is like listening to my mechanic tell me that maintenance is also my responsibility. I tell you, I nod, but I don't get it. And that's my disconnect with the book.

When you watch him on TV, what you see is Problem / Solution. It's not that simple in real life. Real life is Problem / Struggle / Struggle / Struggle / Better / Struggle / Struggle / Better... One day, I'll be mature enough to listen to the book and it will earn it's five stars. Until then, my pup will struggle with me.

But I'm on the right road today, with the right understanding, and absolutely credit the book with drawing the map.

This book has several pages of gems about the human-dog relationship. I found these gems, that could have been summarized on a page or two, to be quite useful in working with a rescued Australian Shepherd. To get these gems with an explanation you will need to read Cesar's story which is interesting enough but does not carry the book.

So read the book for these gems, essentially:
(1) That you treat a dog like a dog, and not a human baby. Cesar's point is that we act in ways that are counter-intuitive to dog culture. We do not realize that dogs first communicate with the nose, then the eyes (watching and decoding our moves and their meanings) and then ears.
(2) That we must be calm-assertive (or what I prefer to call calm-confident) -- that if you are nervous your dog will pick it up, that if you get angry your dog will find a way to resist the very behavior that would have made you happy.
(3) That exercise, and lots of it, is critical to a calm, balanced dog (key concept here is balanced and stable -- most dog pets aren't). That discipline (meaning consistent application of rewards for desirable behavior, and interrupting undesirable behavior) is critical to a dog that knows its place in YOUR pack, and that affection, which is LAST on Cesar's list, should be carefull meted out so as not to thoughtlessly enforce undesirable behavior. If you are lazy and will not exercise your dog properly, get a goldfish! If you are undisciplined yourself, get a pet rock! If you need affection, do not make it your dog's problem. Get a lover!

Thanks, Cesar, for an enjoyable book!

I learned about energy shift needed in oneself to acquire change in the dog's behaviour. Before reading the book I did not get how he did that transformation in the dogs just watching the videos, I needed to read the book before I "got it".

It helped me change my life with my dogs and with people as the same energy is needed to deal with oneself and others.

Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems

I recently became the owner of a four year old Standard Poodle (named Blinky). The minute Blinky walked in the door it became very clear that it wanted to be the boss and run the show. As time progressed Blinky became more assertive and was dictating to me what the routine was. Corrective action was urgently needed. I had never heard of Cesar Millan before but decided to puchase the book based on other reviews I read.
I have found the book to be brillant and have quickly achieved remarkable results with Blinky. I now clearly understand the importance of demonstrating to Blinky that I am the pack leader and NOT treating Blinky like she is a human. I have read some negative comments about Cesar Millan's tranining methods but all I can say is that they work and I have not had to spend hundreds of dollars going to a dog training specialist.

I recently purchased a pure-bred Standard Schnauzer and was looking for a source to help me get the most out of my relationship with my pet. Luckily I do not take delivery on this animal until early June because I needed to read this masterpiece by "The Dog Whisperer" of Nat. Geo. fame to disabuse myself of some erroneous notions about dog ownership.

Cesar's Way will one day go down as a classic work on dog behavior/animal communication. Mr. Millan, drawing on years of anecdotal experience with canines, illustrates in "human terms" just what makes our four-legged friends tick.

Problems with our furry friends arise when we relate to them using human psychology as our frame of reference instead of "dog psychology." What exactly "dog psychology" is, I'll leave it to this wonderful book to enlighten you. Suffice to say, it is NOT the way you would think one would care for your beloved four-legged member of your family.

Written with wit, compassion, but unapologetically (Cesar is "pro-dog"), Cesar's Way has heightened my anticipation; I am anxious to see how my relationship with my beloved Otto von Schnauzen evolves over the weeks, months, and years. As his "pack leader," it is encumbant upon me to meet his needs, and not simply look to him to meet some deep, lost emotional need.

Cesar Millan has done a great service to the animal kingdom, and the well-being of dogs everywhere with this wonderful, enlightening book. I highly recommend this book as an "owner's manual" for your dog. This is a book you're likely to read time and again. I, personally, am on my third reading.

Just the fact that he has correcting has the title of the book puts me off. More so Cesar is not into teaching anything to any dog rather focused on punishing them and making the owners feel they are "in contro". The set backs and consequences of this type of training dogs are immense and never once mentioned on his book leaving the reader feeling that all these techniques are efective when really they are nothing but abusive and uninformed.

Cesar Millan is truly in tune with dogs.

This is one fantastic book, not loaded down with an autobiography or given over to "name dropping" of celebrities.

Millan is so transparently a down to earth, real time guy who has what it takes to communicate with dogs and to pass on that knowledge to their human owners.

Millan's techniques, while ridiculed by other lesser "behaviourists" or "trainers", get to the heart of the matter immediately with no "fluffing" of the situation.

The techniques used by Millan are completely dog friendly, non threatening, non invasive and are not cruel to the animal.

In a truly professional manner, Millan assesses each dog on its own situation - he does not have a "1 solution fits all" approach to the animals, simply because that cannot and does not work.

Millan, correctly, describes his subjects as "Animal, dog, breed, name" and subtly shows that the owners or handlers can also be categorised the same way, "Animal, homo-sapien, Caucasian/Asian/Latin, name". If owners can see that, then the relationship between man and dog becomes so much more "calm".

Millan is one of the true geniuses of the dog world. Other trainers, sit up and take note. Treat a dog like a dog and suddenly the balance of the relationship equalises. It is so simple, all it takes is that basic understanding.

Highly recommended and highly readable.

I purchased this book for a friend who may be kind to her nice dog but is also extremely inattentive to him, actually telling me one day (to my utter dismay) that she "takes good care of her dog because she feeds him twice a day". She also told me she didn't want to train him to go on walks. After standing by for 4 frustrating years and doing what I could to get the dog out walking on my own, I decided on yet one more approach to see if she would connect with him: I gave her this book. I read it first and liked it a lot. My friend read it as well and as a result started to train her dog following Cesar's methods! At least she was intrigued enough to give it a try. I hope her enthusiasm lasts... Thank you Cesar! Your influence reaches far beyond _dog_ training :)

I hadn't even finished this book before I noticed changes in her behavior - I guess she just needed a pack leader, but first I had to be guided, inspired, and trained. Cesar uses a fundamental technique commonly known as "flooding". Flooding an animal basically means forcing it to do a particular behavior. In my experience this should be used as a last resort and only in certain circumstances. In some of Millan's programs he can be seen ignoring obvious `cut off signals" from the animals. Cut off signals in dog behavior are well documented and distinct. Any experienced behaviorist will unequivocally give a recommendation not to continue an interaction with an animal displaying multiple cut off signals. The results of ignoring this advice can result in aggressive reactions. A well known Vegas showman was recently nearly mortally wounded by a Tiger because he ignored cut off signals. Sound advice is to do thorough research into the latest positive reinforcement techniques that are currently becoming main stream. Rewarding your dog for doing the right thing will give you the closest bond with you animal friend. Careless adherence to Cesar Millan's techniques might get you a trip to the E.R.

With a new puppy, I don't have time to wade through page after page after page of autobiography and self-aggrandizement. I need real information, and I need it right now. After all the chapters of his bio, information isn't really broken down so that you can find it and apply it in a practical way. Even the index was unhelpful. A neighbor loaned me this book as a training aid and having never had a problem relating to animals in general, I didnt' find anything useful that would help me blend a new puppy with my lifestyle and household.

Many seem to have objection with being the pack leader; with setting boundaries for dogs and - heaven forbid - telling them NO!

I saw the first few episodes of the tv show then we moved almost 2 years ago and do not get the channel here. I'd already on the surface agreed with what I'd seen on the show - and thinking back to the farm where it was not only our dogs but the myriad of dogs people dumped "in the country" and even with a small pack there is only one case I can think of this wouldn't work - and it was two dogs who hated each other (friend's dog and mine). I'd turn mine loose, get on the horse and they'd all trail with or behind, one occasionally forging ahead. There were no fights, there wasn't aggression at food time, there wasn't excess barking or any of the problems I commonly see people post about today.

Fast forward 20 years and another 'pack' of dogs from a high energy smooth fox terrier to a German Shepherd, a couple border collies, an occasional rescue/foster dog, a few taken in to find homes...and it's a recipe for chaos. Unfortunately without a way to turn them loose and walk it means adapting, but the basics here still work. Boundaries and rules are in place, dogs get along 97% of the time (we're working on the other 3%). With the energy in the breeds and individuals I can't imagine *NOT* being pack leader.

That said, there have been dogs that have "issues" - and without exception returning to the basics in the book works.

Have done many of the things here before hearing about Cesar, however, returning to basics is always good and with animals - and humans! - w never stop learning. Whether it's your first dog or one of many, purebred or mutt, "rescue" or show dog...check out this book. The answer isn't muzzles and doggie pills and the myriad of collars and training gadgets available. It's time. Time to spend with the dog, time to understand DOG.

Cesar Millian has created needed discussion and awareness. He's worth the furor. Before him, though there were decent trainining manuals, it was the AKC that had the popular ear. And isn't it obvious that that Org is a bit nuts? C'mon! Do you really see those oddly tubby people running the circle with their overly sleeked up dogs. Fatties, every one of them.

And they wanted me to cut off my Chloe's tail! Nuts, I tell you.
Millan's common sense is needed.

But the book needs improvement. Less bio, more help. Truth is that even on TV he's not 100% lucid. You have to take the whole package in, and since it is humane and reasonably generous, you should. Valuable person, weakish book.

Wow, a way to understand animals using energy and emotions... the way nature communicates with us.

I'm listening to the audio version of the book (a great way to really learn the material, for me anyway because I can play and replay it).

Cesar obviously has talent with working with dogs but many skills can be learned with perseverance and practice.

It's helpful to hear where Cesar is coming from, his background, his culture, his history, etc. In this book he talks about how he learned how to work with dogs, living with them in Mexico in his grandparent's Mexican farm, how he crossed the border and his journey to Hollywood where he was 'discovered' by Jada Pinkett-Smith. His life story helps me understand his energy and how he uses his intuition to fix problem dogs.

Thanks Cesar! If you like to train your dogs (this is more of dog psychology book and using intuition to work with them), there's this DVD I'd recommend: Train Your Dog - The Positive Gentle Method

I also recommend watching the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel--so helpful!

For those who are looking for step-by-step training guide, this is not the book for you. This book is more of a personal biography and briefly introduces his core belief that dogs need exercise, discipline, and affection in that order.

It was very interesting to read and rather inspiring given where he is today compared to his background. He is a product of very fortunate events and he makes no mistake that luck played just as big a role in his success as his talent for rehabilitating dogs. Getting to know him better, through his words, helps you understand some of the decisions he makes on the show and also helps you kind of predict what his approach is going to be when watching. After reading this book, there are several times when I would watch an episode and say, "that dog needs exercise" or "the owners are overprotecting their dogs and not giving them any rules, boundaries or limitations."

It is not rocket science, but sometimes people need to be reminded on how simple it is to work with mother nature. It is human emotions and rationalization and makes the world complex. Kudos to Cesar... My relationship with my Chow has improved 10 fold since watching his show and reading his books.

I am so glad I bought this book. I have a yorkie and he's my first dog I've ever had. The day I started reading this book I would take that info and try it at home. I can already start to see the change in my yorkie. I would highly recommend this book to everyone, even if you don't have an dog. I can't wait to read the other book. He truly breaks down what a dog thinks and boy have I learned a lot.

Before I read this book I was totally ignorant about dog's psychology.
I have a poodle who used to be very unruly, demanding, disobedient, would poop in the house, bite his owners, run away. All these behaviors were described in the book by Milan Cesar. He explained the roots of the problems and how to correct them. My dog immediately responded to my changed attitude and behavior. It loves the new ways we are dealing with each other. I feel in charge now. My dog appears much more content and tranquil. He is still a happy and loving dog. I recommend this book to any dog owner. It created a miracle for my family.

(Hide Review...)  Absolutely the BEST! Cesar IS "The Dog Whisperer"!

I have read "Cesar's Way" & starting to read "Be the Pack Leader", and I don't want to stop reading. Cesar is wonderful, witty, firm and so lively. I'm so thankful Cesar is out there for all dog owners! Not just ones that have dogs with issues!

I have six dogs, 1 Rottie, 4 Australian Shepherds & 1 Greyhound. No one can believe that I can have all these dogs and they all get along. YOU can, if you are the Pack Leader, "Cesar's Way"!

I have a x-racer Greyhound. I do NOT have any issues with my Greyhound (or any of our dogs) but just knowing Cesar's method and living what he teaches will avoid any future issues. And really with "most" Greyhound families having multiple dogs, this should be added to the list of "required" reading. My Greyhound has only been in our life since October 2007 and she's just recently PASSED her testing & observations to become a Therapy Dog! I truly believe it's because what I have learned from "Cesar Way's" and watching the "The Dog Whisperer".

After I read all Cesar's books, I am sure I will be buying his DVD's. I watch him every Friday night on National Geographic too! Thank you Cesar & Ilusion!!!

I just love this book and, in fact, love all of Cesar Milan's work. He shows again and again how a seemingly small shift in perspective can have an extraordinary impact on our relationship with our dogs, with ourselves, and with the world around us. Milan's real work is with people - and the dogs simply benefit. He teaches us to be calm, assertive pack leaders to help our dogs achieve balance, and in the process teaches his clients how to be in the moment and become leaders in their own lives. He explains that dogs live in the present with little or no concept of past or future, suggesting that we can create a completely new possibility by just being here, now, with our dog. Milan asserts that with a simple shift in your energy, you can completely transform how your dog responds to you - and incidentally how you respond to your own life. He helps people discover personal responsibility as a way to become pack leaders for their dogs.
Milan's work is of course focused on dogs, but I find his ideas are perhaps as pertinent and applicable to human beings. If you enjoy Milan's books as much as I do, check out some of my favorite books: Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation and Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment by authors Ariel and Shya Kane - they have nothing to do with dogs! but share his passion for being in the present and show that a small shift in perspective can radically transform your life, as well as your dog's.

If you have watched the Dog Whisperer and liked it, you will most likely enjoy Cesar's book as well. Not only do you get to learn all about dog psychology, but you get to learn what made Cesar the Dog Whisperer to begin with. Written in Cesar's simple to understand, easy-going way, it really helps understand what makes dogs "tick".

This is great background for Cesar's philosphy of dealing with dogs. He describes his own upbringing and observations of dog behavior and how that has resulted in his current successful way of "rehabilitating dogs and training people". It is very logical and the many examples and pictures are helpful.

Cesar's Way is not so much a training book as an explanation of Cesar's philosophy and his biography. You'll learn about Cesar's life, dog behavior, the psychology of dogs and you'll hear a lot of anecdotal stories. However, you won't get much in the way of concrete training techniques but if you're a fan of the show you'll enjoy this book. His most recent book "Be the Pack Leader" is more oriented towards training.

This book is absolutely brilliant. The book might not show you how to teach your dog fancy tricks but it will show you how to bring up a balanced, calm and well behaved dog. I followed Mr MILLAN's advise in relation to my greyhound and now have no problems walking him off the leash. Despite what many people told me he has no intention of running away. In August 2008 I am purchasing 2 Hungarian Vizsla pups and will follow Mr MILLAN's advise to the letter from day one.

This man is all about marketing and this book is just another marketing tool. In that regard, he's smart. The show for the primer, now Books, DVD's and seminars. He's making a killing but when one starts taking an OBJECTIVE look at his work, there's really not much to "bite on". He has developed a cult following, some of whom will defend this guy like a rabid Coyote but I'm not falling for it. Never should have bought this book and for those honestly interested in Dog behavior, there are TONS of solid books out there for your choosing...don't chose this one.

This is an amazing book. If you love dogs, this will change everything for you (and for the dog!). One recent experience was at a friend's house. They have an "out of control" Poodle that has to be locked in a room when visitors arrive. I did what the book suggests and the dog's owners could not believe it. He never barked and in less than 30 minutes was actually nudging me to pet him. My friends made a comment that went something like this "incredible, as if he knew you since forever". Thank you Cesar Millan - I can only hope your words spread around the world and save unnecessary poor treatment of dogs.
