(Hide Review...)  pity it is not in metric to help non-American diabetics
Reviewer Permalink
I originally bought the 2003 edition of this guide when I started a low carbohydrate diet. It is very thorough but the layout could be made easier. It is especially useful if you live in the USA and eat out a lot. We particularly found the ethnic food data useful.
Just over a month ago my son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes so we bought the 2008 edition.
One major criticism is (an this could be so easily rectified in the next edition)that all foods are listed using Imperial measurements. This is fine if you live in the USA but hopeless for everywhere else in the world. The strange thing is carbs are measured in grams but the weights are in ounces!? In the next re-print, metric weights should also be listed and then we would have a truly 5 star book.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent quick reference guide

I purchased this item in an effort to curb the amount of fast food I consume during my lunch breaks. It's great because it's small enough to fit in my purse, so I just throw it in there and if I have a moment of weakness and find myself sitting in a drive through, at the very least I can see what NOT to order. It is pretty eye opening to see just how much fast food is bad for you and as a result I've really cut back on my intake. If I have it now, it's maybe once a week compared to several times a week before. It has just about every fast food and chain restaurant you can imagine. Of course, not every item is listed, but you can get a general idea of what a small fry order is going to cost you. The majority of the book focuses on food you can purchase at the grocery store. I found it very well organized and informative as well, but I don't use that section as often. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and showed it to everyone in my office who were impressed as well.

(Hide Review...)  This book is comprehensive and basically OK
Reviewer Permalink
This book is ok - the reason I say this is that I really do believe they could have come up with better rhyme and reason when putting the list together. There is no understanding to why food is listed the way it is and that makes for continually flipping, and flipping and flipping - oops I missed it - flip back, flip forward until you find what you are looking for. Why could they not just do it alphabetically arranged with restaurants at the back? I would suggest going to BN or Borders to look at different books first before deciding which one is easy to use. There is definitely a better way than this!

This is an amazing aid whether diabetic or trying to lose weight. This small book is packed with info from calories, carbs, fat, etc. It also includes many restaurants rating their top menu items. It's incredibly helpful. I have purchased this book for so many relatives and friends as well as frequently use it for our family. It's also attractively packaged and very user friendly. Nonreaders will also find it easy to use and comprehend.

(Hide Review...)  I use this book for my weight loss group
Reviewer Permalink
I have bought about 50 of these books and use them for my weight loss group. It is the best calorie counting book I have ever used. It also includes carbs and fat grams for each item. It would have helped to include sodium but it doesn't have that. But it does have a few pages in the back (about 10 pages) that lists the sodium, fiber, protein and iron of many foods. It has an index in the back so you can quickly look up items. It gives lots of helpful information about healthy eating tips and target ranges for daily intake of carbs, calories and fats. It gives lots of other helpful information too about the glycemic index, BMI, calories burned for various exercises, etc. It also has a lengthy fast food section. It doesn't contain every fast food business but has enough to make an educated guess about any food you might buy at a fast food restaurant. I am very happy with this inexpensive, well written book. I have used them for about 6 months in my groups.

This is a handy, little book. It has an enormous amount of useful information about different foods, but it has been a little difficult getting used to how the book is organized. I found it best to go straight to the index at the back of the book to quickly find the calorie content for my next meal.

This is a nice little book for checking calorie counts. However, it seemsto be loaded down with advertisements for other Calorie King products, i.e. computer software, refridgerator magnets, food journals, etc... This is a personal pet peeve I have - when I pay money for something, I don't expect it to essentially be an advertisement for other products.

A good reference book, with a lot of information in a small package. The organization of the entries can be confusing--it's not alphabetical, so you have to get used to it. The information on fast food is especially helpful if you're on the go a lot, and the book is small enough to take with you most of the time.

I'm not sure why anyone would ever want to waste their money on this book. It only counts calories, fat grams and carbs. It lists nothing but commericial foods. You can get the same information off the food label for free. You can MORE INFORMATION off of the food label: sodium, fiber, protein, what kind of fat, etc. The restaurant section is incomplete. You have to visit the author's website for more complete data (and the website charges a fee to get this data).

I have the 2003 edition of this book as well, and have used it for a long time. From what I have seen so far, this edition is a good bit more updated than my other one. There are about 50 more restaurants listed, and though some of them aren't in my area, I am sure there are plenty of people who can benefit from these listings. I love this little book! It is so very helpful for those of us who are counting our calories and need to know the caloric content of things like fruits and vegetables that generally don't come with a nutrition label. And the restaurant guide is indispensable. Thank you, Calorie King!

(Hide Review...)  Outstanding reference for eating out!
Reviewer Permalink
The Calorie King "Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter" book is an outstanding nutrition reference for those who eat out a lot. It contains nutrition information for the main entrees and side dishes for over 200 fast food and chain restaurants. For restaurants that are not part of a chain, there is also a section that provides nutrition info for popular entrees for various cuisines. Local restaurants will differ in terms of portion size served and to some degree in the ingredients they use for a particular dish, but the generic section does at least give you a base to work off of.

Aside from the restaurant section -- which constitutes about a third of the book -- the bulk of the book contains nutrition info for every food imaginable to include info for many brand name pre-packaged foods. Also, the book has a small section at the beginning with general dieting and nutrition information which puts all the raw info presented in the rest of the book in the proper context.

About the only complaint I have is that the book didn't include protein data for the foods covered. (That said, one can easily make a reasonable estimate of protein grams in a given food by subtracting the fat calories and carb calories out of the total calorie info given.)

If you are someone who is trying to lose weight and actively tracks the calorie and nutrition information for the foods you eat, this book is an indispensable reference!

This is not a book you can just pick up and use. I was hoping for a calorie counter that I could open the day I got it and immediately find the items I was looking for. It doesn't work that way. Having said that, it does have a lot of information in it though it can be difficult to find. I don't hate it but I would not buy this book again.

(Hide Review...)  great--for fast food eaters
Reviewer Permalink
I was sold this book by a dietician, and that's a pretty sad thing--it suggested that if everyone in the US can count their calories using this book, then everyone in the US eats mainly fast food (and Olive Garden etc.). I buy my own ingredients and cook my own food; this book does nothing for me. My main beef is actually not so much with the book's content but with the misleading cover, the implication that fast food is what food is, and that apparently dieticians agree with that. Hey! some of us still make our own food! I need a book that lets me count that.

This book had been recommended to me because it lists about any food you can imagine. I didn't like it because the protein and fiber were not listed with the calories/carbs/fat grams though...they were in different locations of the book. I would not recommend this book. If you are interested in the nutritional value of restaurant food though, it did cover about any I could think of.

(Hide Review...)  2008 Calorie King Guide tries to be all things to all readers; a narrower focus would improve it.
Reviewer Permalink
2008 CalorieKing Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter (Calorie King) attempts to be a total health guide and not simply a calorie / fat / carb counter. Ambitiously, it touches on many subjects, but can only devote a page or a few pages to each topic. The format and small size don't allow this book to cover these subjects (diabetes, osteoporosis, overweight kids, etc) as well as a full size book. (For example, there is height/weight chart that gives only the most rudimentary information; if you're 5'6" your healthy weight range is 123-156. It doesn't seem to matter if you're male or female, or what type of frame you have.) If you have anything more than a passing interest in these things, you will probably want a book devoted to that specific topic AND a separate pocket size calorie / fat / carb guide to carry with you. Though this will fit into many purses or briefcases, at 4.25 by 6 inches and almost a half inch thick, this is a bit too big and heavy to be a true pocket guide.

The food section of the book is set up very nicely with columns for calories, fat and carbs. You'd be challenged to come up with a food that's not listed; for example, there are three pages devoted to listings of cheeses, and a page and a half devoted to bread.

A very nice feature of this guide is the fast food and restaurant guide, which is approximately 90 pages. Most of the listings are for fast food places, but there are also entries for chains such as Olive Garden and PF Chang. It surprised me that, living in the Queen City of Sprawl, I've only heard of about half of these places while others I recognize as regional but not around here.

No book of this type is going to be able to cover everything - not even a giddy 20th anniversary edition. This one does manage to cover quite a bit, and includes a link for free website support to check out the latest food products besides. Considering the amount of material they include, the purpose would have been better served by making this a full size book with normal print and a bit more detail. The alternative would be to leave out the special interest health sections and go for a true pocket size guide that included more dining out options. I think this book would have been more useful if the editors had gone in one direction or the other.

(Hide Review...)  Great little book!
Reviewer Permalink
I love this little book! In the beginning, there are excellent tips for mainting a healthy lifestyle, which I really liked. The book inlcudes many popular foods: from grocery stores to restaurants to local fast food places. And you'll never need to guess how many calories are in simple foods like oranges or bananas. The book is very small - less than an inch thick and about 4 inches tall, so you can carry it in a purse, backpack, or briefcase easily.

There is also a companion book, which I purchased - a food and excerise journal that is super tiny and allows you to record 10 weeks of food and exercise. The Calorie King website is also helpful, including a sidebar that tells you how much exercise you'd have to do to work off the food you searched for - quite an eye-opener!

The only negative thing about this book is that due to it's small size, the print is very tiny, so if you have poor eyesight, like myself, it can be a really pain, squinting to read everything.

I am totally satisfed with my purchase and I have used it continually since I bought it. Not only is it useful when couting calories, but by using the Calorie King methods, I am more aware of the consequences of my eating actions. I lots 3lbs in a week by using this book. I highly recommend it.

(Hide Review...)  Missing grams of Protein & sodium info
Reviewer Permalink
This is a good book - lots more dishes covered from restaurants and fast foods than most. I have bought a few of these to give to friends. It would be PERFECT if there was at LEAST info on PROTEIN and SODIUM. The protein is vital to me. The shocking calorie totals are useful - but since I look for a carb to protein ratio (which may be of no consequence when you're dealing with dishes that are more calories total than one needs in an entire day), but many people need both protein and sodium info. It seems like those would fit in that column where the calories, fat and carbs are listed. I'd be willing to get my reading glasses out to read it. Another good book is "Eat This Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds-or More!" - especially for men, who need to VISUALIZE the food. But again, it's missing lots of dishes. Both of these books are great for "shock value" - flip through them once a month to keep yourself on a healthier track!

This is not a quick fix book. This is not a diet book. If you are looking for a fad diet or a "loose weight fast" book, this is not it.
This book is so beautiful in it's simplicity. Basically, it gives you the amount of calories in ever/any packaged food you consume. It even has some calories of fast food meals.
This book open my eyes to what I was truly eating. When I thought I was eating healthy, I realized that I really wasnt. After reading through pretty much ever catagory, something just clicked in my head and it has stuck with me ever since. The first time, I dedicated myself to reducing my caloric intake, using this book, I lost 20lbs. A few years later, I had a baby. I gained 50lbs throughout my pregnancy. After she came, I automatically lost 20 but was still stuck with 30lbs. I bought the book again and skimmed through and pretty much motivated myself to watch what I ate. I lost the entire 30lbs before my daughter was 5 months old. I can pretty much estimate the calories in the things I eat and therefore, lost weight without even needing to work out (I dont have time with a little one).
Awesome book but you have to dedicate yourself and count your calories.

Quick reference that is very informative and covers just about any food and any restaurant ... I use it on a regular basis! It's small enough to fit into a purse, jacket/coat pocket or briefcase.

This book is wonderful, my daughter is diabetic and it has all the fast food guide with carb counts. If you are a carb counter this is a must have book.
