Blood Brothers: The Sign of Seven Trilogy

In the town of Hawkins Hollow, it's called The Seven. Every seven years, on the seventh day of the seventh month, strange things happen. It began when three young boys-Caleb, Fox, and Gage-went on a camping trip to The Pagan Stone. And twenty-one years later, it will end in a showdown between evil and the boys who have become men-and the women who love them.

Blood Brothers is not a 'usual' Nora Roberts plot - it's a little 'off the wall'.....I bought this one because I had the 'second' and wanted to read the 'first' first! Not too excited about getting the third.

I've read quite a bit of Nora Roberts. Not every one but many. I loved High Noon and the sisters trilogy so I though I'd pick this up. I read it in just a few days although I did have to re-read some parts as it was sloppy and mishmash in spots. I thought she could have done a much better job. I think she had a deadline to make. Nora, Dear!! Please give me QUALITY reading!

Oh why, did I ever deny what I know from experience to be the truth? The truth is, Nora Roberts is just a pulp romance writer. I know her legions of fans will take offense over this opinion, but I tried so many of her books and have found they are formulaic and poorly written. Blood Brothers has a promising beginning, as Roberts sets up the framework for her trilogy with the unwitting unleashing of an ancient demon as they play in the forest. Then, several chapters later, she introduces Quinn, then the second of her three main female leads, and it all goes to, well, hell. Same old schlocky romance story. Steamy sex despite misgivings. The three male leads will pair up with the three females. All of this encouraged by loving families.
The paranormal part is also hokey. I won't infuriate further by delving into more detail, but it would be laughably easy to do so.
What's the old saying? If something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

I have been a Nora Roberts fan for years. That being said, Blood Brothers, has to be one of the worse books I have ever read. I struggled to finish the book. The plot was absurd and boring. Thank goodness I did not buy this book but instead borrowed the book from the library. I have become very disappointed in her writing style in the last few years. I hesitate to purchase any of her books.

(Hide Review...)  Same six characters, different trilogy.
Reviewer Permalink
One thing you can count on with this author is that she repeats, repeats and repeats. Not only her same 6 characters in each of her trilogies, but the same, word for word dialogs. As she has gotten older, she repeats words and sentences over and over until the books become unbearable to read. Nora Roberts has dumbed down her stories so much that dialog is restated in every sentence as if the characters were absolute morons. In her effort to seem "hip" she has truncated dialogs into meaningless sentences; overloaded the stories with "Americana" references, ie: baseball teams, that mean zero to a reader, for instance, in the U.K., Japan or Australia. She continues to label drop until you wonder if she is getting kickbacks from the fashion designers, or Coke, Diet Pepsi, etc. IMO, it dates and trivializes the stories.

Caleb's "ooey gooey" family interactions are beyond sucky. If you compare prior trilogies, as I did, with this and her second in this series "The Hollow", you can see where she has copied and pasted dialogs, ie: "She rolled her shoulders". Word for word. You can predict what her character will say next and it never fails. In this story the formula remains: The lead chick is the blustering, hoggish, crass, self absorbed, dead bore Quinn Black. The wimpy, hyper feminine, lamer chick is Layla. The savvy, brainy one is Cybil. Nora clones her 6 main characters, changing only their names, back stories and locale. In each book she repeats her formula of fleshing out two main characters and the 4 others remain minimally developed but in the background. That pattern never changes.

Unfortunately, the characters' attitudes, personality types, expected behaviors remain predictable. If you read one of her trilogies you have read them all. With this one all my hopes for different stories croaked. Just as stulifying Caleb and crass Quinn become lovers by half way through the story, the studious, serious male Fox and wimpy Layla will become lovers midway through "The Hollow". Following this boringly, repetitive pattern, you can predict that brainy Cybil and the hostile male in this trilogy Gage will become lovers by at least page 42 in the final book. Even the increasingly vulgar sex scenes and dialogs are like reading copy and paste. The "demon" in this story is so silly it is hard to not laugh when reading about its antics. I love metaphysical stuff, but this tripe is just too inane to swallow. You don't have to agree with me, but this is how I feel after having been a fan for so many years. At least we have Nora writing as J.D. Robb, in the still compelling futuristic series with gritty Eve Dallas, that is still worth reading. We'll see.

To be fair, I have never read Nora Roberts nor been interested in this genre. I (stupidly) bought this book for a beach trip because it was listed under amazon's Beach Reads. What a mistake. I gritted my teeth through to the end only after reading everything else in the house - including my kids' books - and being desperate for something to read.

The characters are irritating, one-note, stereotyped bores - I care only a little for the 3 'men', and not at all for the 3 'women'. There is no character development at all. The pacing is inconsistent. The plot is a mishmash of every romance and paranormal cliche you can think of - tied together messily with only a lackluster attempt to keep up with the various arcs. The sex is so trite as to be laughable.

I feel like Nora Roberts tossed this off in about 3 days, relying on her fandom to buy whatever crap she turns out at this point. I see some reviews here stating that this is not her best work - for the sake of her fandom I hope that's true.

If you love this stuff, then I can't really say whether you'd like this book or not. If you are NOT coming here a a Nora Roberts / Spooky Bodice-Ripper fan, then I advise you to look elsewhere. This is tedious plodding poorly plotted crap without even the benefit of tight writing or interesting characters to make it worthwhile.

The background of the boys and their brotherly behavior is very well written and believable. The remainder of the story is so beyond belief it is almost laughable. If the author was someone other than Roberts, this book perhaps would not be in print let alone a triology.
I am a fan and have all of her books with the exception of the "in deaths". I gave up on them after the third book because they are unbelievable, repetitive and futuristic claptrap. But I do so love Rourk.

This novel has a long list of things wrong with it from my perspective. I will lump together just a few:

(1) The paranormal stuff just doesn't work. It's supposed to be scary, but it doesn't pass the giggle test. I've liked some books about monsters and ancient magic and such, but this wasn't one of them.

(2) The three men and three women central figures are annoying yuppies who I suspect would drink expensive wine with bologna sandwiches--just for show. They seemingly have no money problems, dress expensively, have nice vehicles and say, "Good point" a lot in an attempt to convince the reader that the story makes sense. Their discussions about what to do next and their conclusions with respect to what is and has happened are silly. I found myself hoping the boogey man would get them.

(3) The best thing about Nora Roberts' novels is her sense of place and the ability to take th reader there. It was completely absent for me in this book. We're somewhere in Maryland, mostly in winter, in some little burg, but the specifics were lacking. I never felt transported.

(4) The book has no ending, no satisfying clincher chapter. I realize this is part one of a trilogy, but in other Roberts trilogies there was a denouement of sorts for each book. The ending here is--well--as goofy as the plot, which is goofy indeed. I can't be more specific than that without someone saying I ruined it for them because they were still reading the book.

This is well below the better books by this author. Somehow I don't have much hope for the next two books, given the absurdity of the premise, the yuppie characters, and the lack of atmosphere.

(Hide Review...)  Intriguing approach to 'horror'
Reviewer Permalink
Other books would focus on the details of the demon's attacks on the town, the 'infection' and madness, suicides, assaults, murders. Instead, while these come up now and then, they aren't the focus of the book. Blood Brothers is as much a mystery as it is a horror novel.

You could say that this series was written for those of us who chuckle every time we read one of those 'lessons learned from a horror movie' emails that goes around, or who roll our eyes when the girl in the horror movie freaks out and runs straight into the bad guy's arms. It's for all of us who want to know why the good guy imprisoned the bad guy centuries ago, risking release centuries later, rather than eliminating him. It's for readers who get frustrated with horror characters that run around getting mown down by evil rather than fighting back.

When the demon tries to drive the women away from the town they've been drawn to, they don't run away. They decide it's time to find out why things are happening they way they are and how to end them. The whole group goes into research mode, interviewing Cal's 97-year-old great-grandmother, reading the journals of an ancestor, consulting with experts on demonology in Europe, figuring out the women's connection to the town, and trudging out to the Pagan Stone in the forest where everything started.

This being a Nora Roberts book, characterization is beautiful, and key to the story. Every character is fascinating and unique, from Cal and Quinn (the foreground characters in Blood Brothers) to Cal's extended web of relatives and acquaintances, and yes, even his dog. I've often wondered how Ms. Roberts can keep up such entertaining and fun descriptions and dialogue for book after book; it feels as though she writes them with every bit as much joy and mirth as radiates from the lines she's written.

Blood Brothers is part horror/paranormal, part mystery, part romance, and all amazing. Due to the research angle I imagine there are some people who might find it too 'talky' if that isn't what they're in the mood for. However, the plot & background are so fascinating as they get teased apart, and the characters and their dialogue so interesting, that I daresay as long as you aren't specifically in the mood for something else, you'll get quite a charge from this engrossing story.

I am a huge NR fan. I started reading her books about 7 years ago, and I have rarely been disappointed. I definitely wasn't disappointed by Blood Brothers.

In the town of Hawkins Hollow, evil lurks. It seduces. It kills. For 21 years, evil has stalked the town, returning every seven years. Since their 10th birthday in 1987, Cal, Fox, and Gage have been cleaning up the carnage that it has left behind. Now, 21 years later, it is beginning again. This time it has started sooner and it has gotten stronger. The guys don't want to just clean up after it anymore, they want to beat it, and with the help of Quinn, Layla, and Cybil they will.

I was stoked to learn Ms. Nora had a new trilogy coming out. It is not as good as her other trilogies. This first installment left too much out. As an attempt to ensure future sales of the second? I wouldn't think so - this woman is a writing machine! An interesting story, with too much of a cliffhanger ending.

"Blood Brothers" is a very entertaining paranormal romatic suspense novel. The characters were well-rounded and likable, and it was easy to see where the romances would develop. The horror parts were my favorite, as I think the author is quite good as raising goosebumps!

I felt the ending was a bit abrupt, though I know this is the first of a trilogy. I'm looking forward to reading "The Hollow" very soon to see what happens to Cal and Quinn and their friends.

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

On their 10th birthday, unbeknownst to them, three best friends - Caleb, Fox, Gage - made a blood pact on the Pagan Stone and released demonic evil that had been imprisoned for hundreds of years.

Now, every 7 years, on the 7th day of the 7th month, 7 days of terror plague their home town of Hawkins Hollow and no one in town really remembers what happened during that time. No one except the reluctant heroes who made a pact to do everything they could to protect their twon from this evil.

Now 21 years after the demon was first unleashed, fear attacks the town early and Caleb, Fox, and Gage, and three woman drawn to the town for unknown reasons - Quinn, Layla, Cybill - must find courage and hidden strength to defeat the monster once and for all. And maybe even find love in the midst of terror, if only they can survive.

Caleb Hawkins, owner of the small town's bowling alley, feels the strongest responsibility of the three men to protect the town since his ancestors were the town's founders. He fears what will happen if they can't defeat the evil demon before it's too late. Quinn Black is a writer famous for her books on modern urban legends. The stories surrounding Hawkin's Hollow lure her into town and she stays upon feeling a strange bond to the town, and to Caleb. These two are drawn to one another in spite of all the odds stacked against them, and the visions they experience about along dead couple from Hawkins Hollow bind them even closer.

However, all the signs of typical Nora trilogy fare are present here, same formula, same personalities. Three single men we meet immediately, each attracted to one of the three also single women. As usual, quite a bit of time was spent setting up all three couples, which cuts in to the time I would have liked to spend with Blood Brothers' couple. Even the standard physical appearance found in every single Roberts trilogy are present here. I'd sure like to see Roberts venture away from her typical formula and give us a new crew of characters.

I was quite emotionally invested in Blood Brothers and enjoyed this first installment in Nora's latest trilogy much more than most of her other trilogies I have read. Romance is found, as to be expected for Nora, but this book is evenly split between the romance story and the horror/suspense story. We have a whole variety of things here, psychic gifts, demons, ghosts, reincarnation (maybe) and several other interesting elements. I was so disappointed in her previous paranormal trilogy, The Circle, so I was happy to see that The Sign of Seven was far better.

Phil Gigante does an impressive job narrating Blood Brothers. He is fantastic using voices perfect for each individual character. The only fault I found in his performance was that he tends to overdo the falsetto used to portray the women and after a while, that grated on my nerves quite a bit.

Potentially interesting story, if you like the paranormal/demonic stuff...which I generally do. Story dragged in places, though, and the characters were a little flat. Frankly, the character I cared most for was the dog. Romance was a little smarmy...I mean, Gabaldon pulled off paranormal romance w/out the smarminess...it can be done. Roberts is better than this...she was clearly in a hurry on this one. If you want paranormal stick with Buffy...

(Hide Review...)  Daggone it, should have waited for all three
Reviewer Permalink
First off, I'm a big fan of Nora Roberts's writing, in general. That probably skews my review. However, I have disliked some stuff she has written, so this isn't a blind recommendation.

For the overview: this is paranormal romance. Three boys - most likely relatives - are tied to a demon who wants to wreak havoc. These boys - men - spend their lives containing the havoc and trying to find a way to stop it.

After 20 some years of this hold play, something changes: the players. Suddenly, there are three women in on the action. Of course, since this is romance, there will be three full romances. This book is the first in the trilogy.

N.R. is famous for her trilogies, and for the most part, I really enjoy them. This is no different. I love the way she writes both male and female characters, and her plots, though not exactly fresh, still read like something new.

The only thing I found disappointing in this book is the finale of it. There really isn't one. In the Three Sisters trilogy (probably the next most popular paranormal fiction series of hers, though she has so many!), each book had an established battle at its conclusion. This book really lacks that, I think. There is a "battle", but it's more like something that should have happened somewhere in the middle of a book. Not at the conclusion.

For me, I wish I had waited for all three to come out, because I think that book three is gonna kick serious bootie.

COURTESY OF CK2S KWIPS AND KRITIQUES

Caleb, Fox and Gage, best friends, sneak off to Pagan Stone, a forbidden spot in the woods to celebrate their shared tenth birthday. They will soon discover why it was forbidden to visit this terrible place, as an innocent oath meant to bond them as blood brothers calls up a great evil. An evil that will plague their town of Hawkins Hollow every seven years on the seventh day of the seventh month.

Now as they approach their 31st birthdays, they realize that the evil grows more powerful upon each return and this is their last chance to stop it.

First in a new trilogy by Nora Roberts, Blood Brothers grips you and won't let you go. I would say it won't let you go until the end of the book, but I'm still feeling its clawing grip as I impatiently await The Hollow coming out in May.

I love it when Roberts delves into the paranormal and spooky. Even though it's billed as a romance, I felt the romantic aspect played a somewhat supporting role in this book. The romance gave the reader some much needed break from the delicious tension of the supernatural and was decadently palpable in and of itself. The relationship between Caleb and Quinn simmered until it sizzled.

The town of Hawkins Hollow is more a character in the story than a place setting. The deep history of the town takes us back to the Puritans and its founders, providing centuries of back-story to play with. Small towns with a deep past are my favorite background for a book like this. There are so many layers and possibilities as this trilogy unfolds.

As I've come to expect from Nora Roberts, her female characters are strong and multi-dimensional. That's not to say the ladies don't have their struggles or weaknesses, but each of them shows courage and it's always a pleasure to read a story with women who work through their fears and support one another.

I also appreciated how well developed the characters were in this book as a whole, considering there were so many that played an important role.

My only complaint is that it ended too soon. Unlike any of the author's other trilogies the conclusion of this book had a more unfinished feel to it. Almost as if it was merely pause in the story. I was hungry for more. I definitely wouldn't have been satisfied by it on its own.

I am a huge fan of Nora Roberts - she lets me get away with reading romance novels - that arn't too, well you know, girl meets boy, the guy is always perfect & and never has committment issues they live happily ever after BLAH BLAH BLAH....those kind of romance books. Nora always includes 'real' life relationships - Strong lead women characters, committment phobic guys (like in real life) etc etc. Blood Brothers was a very good book - not her best...but like others could not put it down until I was done (middle of January) and then realized that the 2nd one doesn't come out until MAY!!!!! Grrrr.

Anyway - I am always happy when I pick up a Nora Roberts book. She never disappoints me as the reader. I am a BIG fan of all her paranormal books - never got to 'into' just the romance ones. I would recommend this to others out there who like the SCI-FI side of Nora.

As usual,Ms. Roberts gives us a good read; she is always interesting and her insight into her character's personality is very clever. Which name she writes under makes no difference,I've never been disappointed with ANY of her books because she always satisfies! I'll purchase anything that has her name on it, no matter the price! Every character is very real. Can't wait for what comes next!!

Once again, Nora Roberts has outdone herself. Now we just have to wait for books 2 and 3. While I always hate to see her books end, I love it when she writes a trilogy so that the suspense lasts longer. I highly recommend this first book.

(Hide Review...)  Finally... Roberts is back!
Reviewer Permalink
I must admit I didn't really like Roberts' last books. I didn't like the mystical detours and I even did the unthinkable - started to read a new book and then put is aside.

But Roberts is back. Finally. Blood Brothers has everything I love about Roberts. The emotions are there, and they sweep you along. I laughed, cried, and wished this book would never end. Now that it did, I'm counting the days till the next one.

I think the reason I loved this book despite its mystical parts, is the fact that the characters already have the knowledge of their powers, and there's no agonizing acceptance process. Thank god.

Blood Brothers is a fun fast read, Roberts style. You don't want to miss it.

Let me start off by saying that I have never read any Nora Roberts books before this one, so I have nothing to compare this book to as far as her previous works go.

I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. I found this book very enjoyable to read and I finished half the book in about two days. I like how she mixed the romance with the suspense/supernatural.

The only part I didn't like was the ending. It seemed unfinished to me. I know this is the first part of a trilogy, but I thought she could have written a cleaner ending.

Other than that, I enjoyed this book and I am now looking into other books by Mrs. Roberts. I also will pick up the 2nd book in this trilogy when it comes out in May 2008.

I think Nora Roberts is at her best when she writes about the supernatural. (I think she's a closet Pagan, personally.) It was a hard book to put down. A little predictable in some parts. Don't know if Roberts does that on purpose. The predictability stretches into the other two books to come as well. Still, looking forward to book two-The Hollow.

I felt this story started out slow, but built up momentum as Nora took us to the modern-day characters, searching for the answer to the Pagan Stone. Caleb Hawkins, Fox O'Dell and Gage Turner are all boyhood friends now grown and about to reach their 31st birthdays on July 7th. Ever since they were 10 years old and camped out in the wooded area of the Pagan Stone, a large rock with a haunted folklore behind it dating back to 1652, mixing their blood on an oath of "Blood Brothers Forever," the boys have experienced some very strange happenings, occurring every 7 years starting with their 10th birthdays and again at ages 17, 24 and now the big one, 31 (all three boys were born on the same day, 7/7/1977). Strange things take place in the town of Hawkins Hollow, Maryland; people who are otherwise complacent, begin to murder, rape and steal for no apparent reason. The boys themselves have been free from disease or bodily imperfections ever since their frightful awakening of the spirits on that day in 1987. Now we are in present times and they are reaching "the end of it, seven times three, death or life." With the aid of three women - all drawn to the town for different reasons only to discover their link in this strange and haunting chain. First, Quinn Black, writer, comes to the Hollow in the hopes of researching Cal and writing a book on the tale. Then we meet Layla Darnell, NYC shopkeeper, led to the Hollow through her very own nightmares. Last but not least, Cybil Kinski, friend of Quinn, shows up to help the cause as well. We have to wait for the next book "The Hollow" to come out in May to find out what happens next to our group of six. It is a spooky and romantic saga, similar to the Circle Trilogy and for my money, certainly worth a sequel.

I just loved the book but I wish that the book two and three where more forthcoming then they are. I wish I would have known tht there are almost six month between release dates between the trilogies 1, 2 and 3. It is rather hard to keep The story line in my head for so long between books and time. But I will I still always adore Nora Roberts as my favorite romance novel writer of all times because she is able to take me way from the places aim at to the places she creates. Susanne DeRemer

Nora Roberts returns to her trilogies, and returns from the strange streak of vampirism and fantasy she displayed in her last series, The Circle trilogy.

Three friends, making a blood brothers vow on their shared tenth birthday, unleash an evil that has been held in check for three hundred years. Suddenly the town goes mad for seven days and seven night...and just as suddenly it stops. But the evil returns every seven years for seven days and nights, and Cal, Fox, and Gage are the only ones who sees the demon, the only ones who can try to stop the madness. Now the men are thirty-one and the evil is stronger than ever. But in to The Hallow strolls first Quinn, then Layla, and Cybil, who are compelled to the town for their own reasons. The six unite to try to destroy the evil before it can destroy the town. And, of course, pair up with each other.

Roberts returns to fine form with Blood Brothers, presenting her readers with solid characters, good background, and a very creepy plot. If her last trilogy felt like Anne Rice, this harkens in all the best ways Stephen King - in fact, one of her characters references his classic 'Salem's Lot to describe the panic-inducing vision of a demon child floating outside her second-floor window. The action speeds through the novel, and more than one scene will leave a nighttime reader with the urge to glance over their shoulder on the look out for that demon child. The plot and characters feel more fully fleshed out than in her last trilogy - with the exception of Layla, but as the second of the series (The Hollow, due out in May 2008) is her story, one can expect better characterization to come, and the third of the trilogy (The Pagan Stone, due December 2008) promises a pairing of Cybil and Gage, which already seems like the most interesting prospect of the three couples. The only complaint a regular reader of Roberts' trilogies may have is that the form is formulaic and very familiar; however, the story and the characters are intriguing enough to keep them hanging on.

Blood Brothers is a solid book, combining the love story with good supernatural suspense without once feeling over-the-top or completely unreal; in fact, the creepiness factor feels almost like a tamer Stephen King at his best. Nora Roberts has given her readers a captivating first novel of the Sign of Seven trilogy.

I'm not at all into the whole paranormal thing but I bought this book for two reasons-1, Nora Roberts wrote it and 2, because she wrote the unputdownable, wonderful stories of Cam, Ethan, Phillip and Seth. I was hoping to find the same connection between the "Blood Brothers", Cal, Fox and Gage. I did. In fact, NR went one better. Cal is a little bit Ethan, Fox is a little bit Phillip and Gage is definitely a whole lot Cam. And still, I wouldn't have bought the book but for the little synopsis 'the boys who have become men-and the women who love them'. I'm much more about guys and girls hooking up than ghosts and boogy-men. While I wasn't terribly engrossed by the plot, just reading about Cal and Quinn made it a worthwhile read. There was plenty of Fox and Gage, too. In fact, I can't wait to read the story of the "scruffy, gorgeous and dangerous looking" Gage Turner.

I will start out by saying that I am a die-hard Nora Roberts fan and have read literally everthing she's ever written. That being said, this first book of her newest trilogy didn't do a whole lot for me. I know that the first book of a trilogy always sets the stage for what is to come, but this book was fairly boring and didn't leave me anxiously awaiting the next installment like most of her other trilogies have done. I will, of course, read the rest of the series with the hope that it will get more exciting and involving as we go along.

I agree with the poster that wrote that she didn't have a very good sense of these characters yet and that they seemed underdeveloped. I got the same feeling. And frankly, this book just didn't have that page-turning intensity that she usually creates for me. I can usually finish one of her books in a day or two because I don't want to put it down but this book didn't do that for me like, say the Circle Trilogy did.

As I said, I'll continue reading and hope it gets better because, let's face it, even a not-so-great book by Nora is better than most anything else out there these days.

I normally love Nora's book, but this one left me lukewarm at best. The characters seem under developed, the story drags in spots and quite frankly this demon is a wimp!

Normally her books pull me and keep me captivated. I can not wait for the next book to come out, this one here, yawn.

Nora Roberts once again has captured my trilogy attention. This is book one and it left me excited about the next two coming up. I especially like Nora Roberts mention of my favorite movie/dancer/actor/singer Hugh Jackman. It isn't the first time she has a little bit of Hugh or Wolverine in her writing. Go Nora!
