This book is typical for a college text. It is full of information pertaining to introductions to biology. My only complaint is that it only has information rather than explaining how it determines the information.

Because I have to travel a lot (public transp) I am very happy with this hard covered book. It doesn't get damaged very easy.

This book is a good biology text book -- it's pretty easy to read and has interesting examples and real-world applications of some of the concepts. The MasteringBio website, though, is AWESOME. It comes with an ebook version of the text book, so you don't have to carry it around with you (good because it is huge and really heavy). It also has quizzes and mini tests that you can take online to see if you understand the material. The best part in my opinion though is that there are all kinds of animations and interactive learning tools that make the material super easy to understand. I absolutely recommend it!

Dense albeit through text. Diagrams and pictures are very good and aid greatly in understanding biology. Needs more problems at the end of the chapter to help the student lock in the information.

This book has a great layout, and it has a great website that coincides with it. It's easy to read and not very complex. Obviously, some Biology prerequisite should be in order if using this book, but other than that, I say it's one of my better textbooks this semester, if not the best.

We received this item in a timely manner, however the listing said hardcover and it was actually paperback. That's a bit of a difference. We kept it anyway.

I am not qualified to judge the contents of this book. I do have some criticisms of the book itself and some ideas how it could be more easily published.

The time has not yet come for electronic textbooks. This book, though, is the tipping point for me to decide that not only are e-textbooks inevitable but necessary. This book is extremely heavy and unwieldy. I would like to see this company publish the book in two volumes. The problem would be the lack of appendices from volume to volume. But the benefits would outweigh these.

The sheer amount of paper is mind boggling. Knowing that this is the number one selling biology textbook on Amazon just makes me wonder how much paper is devoted to this text throughout the country. How many tons I mean, not sheets. I would like to see Amazon make a larger model of the Kindle that would allow the reading of textbooks in the larger format. Imagine downloading your textbook on the first day of class from the teachers computer rather than waiting in line at the bookstore... of course the problem with e-books is that there is no such thing as a 'used' e-book.

As far as ordering from Amazon, as usual the book arrived in great shape. I will order from them again (and again) whenever possible.

This book is great for any biology course. I give it my highest recommendation for any college level course. I personally a using it for General Biology I and it is a great tool with great diagrams to enhance the reading.

I had this book for the first semester. One will
have to do a lot of reading but the book does a
good job explaining concepts. The CD that
comes with the book is awesome for testing
your knowledge. If I may suggest something that
has helped my studies greatly, a little book called
Don't Like to Read, Then Don't, Listen!: How to
Turn Any Type of Text Into Audio Files That Can
Be Read to You!. I know that many students out
there are like me and would rather listen to
material than have to read it themselves. I use
programs like the one that is reading this review
to have my texts read to me. This is a god send
for me. One can get this title on amazon.

My college bookstore wanted this book for $185.00, I paid $137 on Amazon. This book also comes with a CD (student access kit). Amazon will continue to get my business when it comes to textbooks, if the price is right.

I was able to purchase this book through Amazon.com for my class for $35.00 less than what it was sold for at the college book store, with free shipping. As much as college text books are, I was thrilled to save the money. I found out afterwards that a national book store chain contracts at my school book store. No wonder it was $35.00 more there! I will check Amazon.com for every class from now on.

I completed my B.A. in biology over 30 years ago and got this book for self-study and to catch up with progress in topics outside of my work experience. The sections seem well written and illustrated. Since this is an introductory text it has sidebars and interviews meant to interest the intro student. I'd leave those out, if only to make the book less massive.
