I love this cookbook. Me and my husband thought we would try this to lose weight and we have each lost 7 lbs in 3 week so far. I think the recipes are delicious and not very had to make. The ingrediants can get a bit expensive but once you have all the spices stocked up are fine. I have made quite a few of the recipes so far and loved everyone so far. I do not think we will ever go back to eating the way we did before. I am reading a lot of lables on food now. I plan to start exercising soon(which I dispise) but my husband loves to exercise and even does P90X but he had reached that wall and could lose no more weight. This new way of cooking and eating did the trick. I would recommend this cookbook for anyone who wants to lose weight. I have tried lost of my life to lose weight and nothing worked even exercise but this did the trick.

The title says it all..FAMILY COOKBOOK...BUDGET-FRIENDLY...the recipes are very easy to prepare and don't call for alot of items not usually found in the home. My husband, who is a "meat and potatoes" man has found all of the recipies quite tasty. Most dinner recipes make a meal for 4, sometimes 6, but they are easy to cut in half. I ordered another one of these books to give to my cousin and she is as pleased as I am! The strawberry-lime smoothie recipe is worth the purchase of the book alone! I am very, very pleased with my purchase! If you have decided to get on the right track and eat healthy, this is the book to buy!

I absolutely love this cookbook. There is such a variety in recipes in this book that I haven't stopped using it since I got it. Other cookbooks have recipes and stories and then some workout routines. This book is completely devoted to sharing a variety of recipes that you and your family are going to love.

Both books are excellent.
The Biggest Loser Cookbook has many very practical, easy to prepare recipes along with some great advice on healthy cooking. Born to Run is an interesting story about the possible roots of running and poses the question, how far have we really come with all our technology? Good book, great price. This cook book is wonderful! They have a wide variety of dishes, ranging from something similar to McDonald's egg McMuffin to BLT Burgers to BBQ Bacon Meatloaf, and the completed dishes are actually TASTY! My fiancee was a bit skeptical when I first started talking about this cookbook (especially after trying a few other not-so-tasty diets)! We have tried several of the recipes in the past couple weeks and have not come across one we didn't like. The best part about this book is - it's more of a "lifestyle change" than a "diet". What you're eating doesn't taste like diet food! The cookbook tells you the nutritional information per serving for each dish - and ONE SERVING is often filling enough to be considered the main part of the meal - add some green beans, a slice of whole wheat bread and dinner is served! I loved this cookbook so much I bought the orignal one, and will be scoping out recipes in that one soon!

I checked out this book from the library because I wanted some new ideas for some healthy recipes for my family. The recepies are great and they are for the most part easy to follow and all of the ingrediants can be found in any local grocery store. That is a plus because there have been so many times that I have bought a cookbook but have had to shop in a specialty store just to find the ingrediants. Who has the time and money to do all that?
My biggest complaint in this book is the nutrition information listed on page 9. It states to use the following equation to calculate your daily calorie needs in order to lose weight. (your present weight x 7) and then the paragraph below states that you you weigh more then 300 lbs start by eating 2,100 calories a day and if you weigh less then 150 pounds, plan to eat around 1,050 calories a day. That is way to few calories and it is very dangerous to eat this low for weeks or months on end. Sure you will lose weight at first but you will also be starving yourself and as soon as you start eating a healthy amount of calories all that weight will come right back on. 1,050 calories is hardly enough to give the body energy to sit at a desk all day much less exercise as the book suggests doing in order to lose weight. So use the book for the recipes but discard the nutrition information. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-13 05:05:23 EST)

Before purchasing this cookbook I tried to research how it would be laid out in the Kindle. I was not able to find any review, description or image of how the cookbook functioned on the Kindle. I was expecting the bookmarks in the cookbook to work similar to other books I have read and used including Holy Bible, New International Version, NIV. Much to my surprise the only links were in the Table of Contents and to find a recipe under a category like Meats I first had to go to Meats and then click Next Page until I found a recipe that I liked. I was expecting to click Meats and then have a list of links to recipe titles. Not functional at all.
Worse yet was the fact some recipes required a reference to another recipe and there were no links to the other recipe. You once again had to go to the Table of Contents, choose a category and then mindlessly click next page. I am going to by the paper back version. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-13 05:05:23 EST)

I absolutely love this cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow and are definately budget friendly, most recipes contain things you already have in your kitchen. Also every recipe has the nutrition information so that you don't have to guess. The only bad thing is that the book isn't bigger.

I never realized that healthy food could taste so good, and most of all easy to prepare. I've always eaten out for the past 18-20 years, and not a big fan of cooking. 270lbs later, it reflected. Since I started cooking at home I've lost over 40lbs, and have learned to cook healthy and more importantly - portion control. This book rocks, just wish it had more recipes; hopefully their going to come out with a second edition. Even my kids love it. They don't even know their eating healthy and can't tell the difference - all they know is that mom/dad cooked and it taste good. Thank you and a big high-five to Rodale Books, Biggest Loser, BodyBugg and NBC for the motivation, inspiration and the tools to get my life back on the right track.

I like to cook, but admittedly I am not too adventurous with unfamiliar ingredients and don't have tons of cooking pans and gadgets. This book was perfect for me. The recipes are easy with ingredients I buy anyway. I have liked everything I have tried from the book. I like to cook a couple of dishes on the weekend and freeze them for during the week. I would definitely buy other BL cookbooks if they are like this one. My personal favorite is the Baked Ziti - yum!

Listen, if you are the person who skips latte coffee and calls it budgeting and living tight then yes, this book probably will cost you less then the steaks you eat every night. However, I have a family of five, and we already live tight. These recipes cost a lot more then my current budget for food. And I know, we live tight, but when I see a book that says it's for people on a budget, I thought it meant people who actually budget tight for food.
Besides that, it doesn't seem to account for eating food I already have in the cupboard, I have eggs, I have sugar and wheat flour. Why should I have to go out and buy upteen types of brans and fake sugars and fake eggs? Not only would that kill my budget (having to buy all new ingredients instead of being able to use some of the stuff I have) But I can't seem to figure out how much I'm changing the recipes if I do use the stuff I have. Are these recipes even healthy if I use the real food instead of 'substitute' food? It's discouraging, and the few recipes I've tried cost more then any of my other meals. This cookbook has lots of great recipes. I am very picky about "diet" foods and lower calorie/fat versions of foods I love and the recipes in this cookbook are very good and can be done on a budget.

"Substitute fruit for candy if you have a sweet tooth. If I'm craving sour candy, I'll eat a tangerine instead. And the fiber in the fruit keeps your blood sugar steady." ~ Bette-Sue Burkund, Season 5
If you are the type of person who believes that a cookbook is worth the price if you find even just one good recipe then you will be pleased with this cookbook. For me, finding the "Orange Cream Smoothie" recipe was worth the time it took to read this book. The only problem I had with the recipe was that it only calls for two tablespoons of orange juice. Using ½ cup plus the two tablespoons worked much better and took the recipe from ice cream to a smoothie. You also don't need to use ice cubes if you are using frozen mango. I also used Activa "light" vanilla yogurt in the recipe so I ended up with a Mango and Vanilla Smoothie. If you have always eaten pineapple with cottage cheese then you will appreciate the mandarin orange variation. The idea of eating bananas with sugar-free caramel sauce was also a winner. These are simple recipes but are great ideas for snacks. Recently in cookbooks I've noticed authors giving lots of variations for common breakfasts like oatmeal or Cream of Wheat. This book has a delicious recipe for "Banana Cream of Wheat." I'd just suggest you use fat-free milk in place of the water. This is a good recipe to use if your bananas have become a bit too ripe. Other recipes which look delicious include: Szechuan Beef and Broccoli Roasted Lemon-Pepper Salmon Spinach Salad with Feta and Mandarin Oranges Grilled Chicken Smothered Nachos Strawberry Breakfast Banana Split - uses vanilla yogurt instead of ice cream The more I look through this recipe book the more recipes I want to try. So far four recipes have been a success and I look forward to trying even more. The full-color pictures also make this book all the more tempting. ~The Rebecca Review (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-13 05:05:24 EST)

This book is ok, but honestly I was hoping for more dinner recipes. Also, alot of the recipes weren't really kid friendly. I have a picky 6 year old who I know will stare at the recipes and say what is that. I got the book quickly though so kudos for that.

This book has some outstanding, and easy to make recipes using ingredients you can find in your everyday grocery store.
I really like it because most of the recipes are for 1 to 4 servings. The 1 servings are great for me because I'm single and they are simple to make. All the recipes seem to be very easy and quick to make and all you need to do is switch some ingredients used in the old "stand-by" recipes to healthier choices for new recipes. I've already started using many of the recipes! (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-13 05:05:24 EST)

I have bought many "healthy" cookbooks. Most of the recipes aren't recipes my family would eat, are difficult to make, and include ingredients that are difficult to find. The Biggest Loser cookbook is not like that. My family, including 3 kids, has loved every recipe I have made from this cookbook. They are also easy to prepare and there are no crazy ingredients that I have never heard of.
Another wonderful thing about this cookbook is the portion size. I have found with many low-fat recipes I have tried the portions are small, but not with the biggest loser cookbook. The portions are good size portions, but the calories are still low. I would recommend this cookbook to anyone who wants to make healthier meals. I use it several times a week and LOVE it!!! First let me state I don't watch the show. I am aware of the kind of weight people have lost through the show as a result I decided to purchase this cookbook. As a general rule we (my family and I) eat healthy. We don't eat processed foods, EDTA, BHA, BHT, MSG, artificial sweeteners or a myriad of other chemicals which are very bad for the human body yet the FDA allows them to continue to be used in food. We eat organic as much as we can. I was hoping this was going to be a cookbook that took those type of things into consideration and wouldn't suggest using "fake foods". I was hoping this cookbook was going to contain some recipes I could make for my family which were obviously healthy, not as diet foods rather as regular food we eat everyday. Honestly I'm a little astonished they would publish this garbage under the guise of being healthy.
I cannot tell you how much it disturbs me to see they are actually encouraging people to eat hot fudge for breakfast?! How is that a healthy eating choice? There is a lot in there on desserts, sweets, artificial foods, low fat, low cal etc. In case you were not aware, just because it says it is low fat doesn't make it good for you, just as saying it is low cal doesn't. The FDA decided it is OK for manufacturers to say their product is transfat free if there is less than .5 grams per serving. Take a look at the ingredients of those foods you are eating, if it has hydrogenated (partially or otherwise) there is transfat, Interesterified fat is worse! This really gives new meaning to "biggest loser", people think they are making healthy lifestyle changes, all they are doing is trading one bad thing in for another. It is like a cigarette smoker switching to cigars, or an alcoholic switching from Rum to Vodka. If you are the kind of person that just really can't eat a piece of fruit without a bunch of aerosol can fake whipped cream on it, or you can't live without a banana split for breakfast, then this is your book. If you are the kind of person that actually wants to make healthy food choices, wants to make healthy eating choices and/or doesn't want to end up with some horrible disease as a result of all the chemical crap in "fake food", I suggest you look elsewhere. There are easily 100 cookbooks out there which are better. I understand the premise of teaching healthy portion control, they really missed the mark with teaching healthy food choices. If I could return it I would, and I will speak to Amazon to see if they will allow me to. This cookbook is a huge disappointment, I wouldn't recommend it anyone. I certainly wouldn't make any of the recipes for my family or anyone else. It is marketing pure and simple, they are selling the "biggest loser" brand to American consumers without caring what they are telling American consumers to ingest, it'a a horrible disgusting practice and they should be ashamed of themselves. I really like the original Biggest Loser cookbook and think that this one is right up there with it. The budget friendly take on recipes is also extremely good especially in today's economy. A great book that goes along with it is Eat This, Not That! Thousands of Simple Food Swaps that Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds--or More!. We need more great cookbooks like this one.

I have a couple of other cook books from Devin Alexander and they are wonderful. I love watching the Biggest Loser and decided to try the cook books. Right now my hubby and I are doing Nutrisystems together, I want to loose about 15lbs and he needs to lose the 40 he has gained since his heart attack. I started by using this for the vegetable recipes to add some variety in the NS meal plan. The Cajun Squash fries are to die for!!! There are so many great recipes. My daughter even went through both Biggest Loser cookbooks and marked several she wants to try. I fixed the North Sea Omelet instead of a NS breakfast for my husband the other day and he loved it, my daughter tried it and picked off the scallions and capers. But she ate and omelet, she usually won't eat eggs. We also made the Gourmet Roast Beef Wraps substituting Turkey instead (my daughter won't eat beef or pork) She ate in on the Wheat Tortilla, she hates wheat anything. My son will pretty much eat what I make him. This book is a winner in my home!!

Ok, I'll admit it, I buy cookbooks, look through them and then never use them. But not with this one. The Biggest Loser Family Cookbook stays on my kitchen counter and actually gets used. It has great healthy, EASY receipes. I've noticed the book uses many of the same basic ingredients over and over so you don't have to go broke buying new things at the grocery store. It has given me new healthy options for dinner that my family loves!

There are some good substitution ideas in here, but especially in the dessert section there was 'way too much emphasis on fake food (fat-free and sugar-free pudding, for example), and there's already enough of that on the show.
Another big problem with this book is that the organization is poor. Several recipes called for another recipe to be made first (e.g. meatloaf sandwich made with leftover meatloaf), but they should have been listed alongside the original recipe, instead of being in separate sections. Check out of the library first, before buying. If you already use sugar substitutes and sugar-free/fat-free convenience foods in your cooking, this book may have some new ideas. If you're looking for healthier recipes made with regular food that doesn't have additives, there are only a few recipes in this book that fit the bill. Healthy ways to cook the food that you love. Baked ziti-the healthier way or egg mcmuffin sandwich-the healthier way. And of course, a tons of actually delicious recipes. I have been using ONLY this book for the past month to eat my breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, and dinner for my husband and me. He always says how awesome my healthy meals are from this book. I love it too. The book is also budget conscious and tells you ways to conserve herbs and veggies. I never really used herbs to cook, but this book introduced me to it, instead of using lots of oil and salt. Also you do LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book. I take it with me all the time when I go food shopping and to cook. This book is my Bible to healthy eating.

Great Advice, Great Recipes, Great layout.
I have made the sweet and sour chicken from this cookbook MANY times. It is never something I thought of as low-calorie so I'm so glad this cookbook opened up my eyes and showed me how it could be. The only reason I give it 4/5 stars is because there isn't a ton of variety. Yeah there is a healthy pizza, some easy desserts, and creative breakfasts, but 90% of the cookbook is chicken and sometimes I would like to make a new dish with ham or turkey. I recommend this cookbook though. It's worth the money if you are watching what you eat. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-04-24 04:27:34 EST)

This is a great and very practical cookbook (Over 125 recipes according to the book). I really enjoyed Chef Devin's informative pages at the beginning and with each category of the cookbook. Her philosophy is easy to understand and follow. Since she was an overweight teenager, Chef Devin understands the struggle. She works to create tasty and healthy recipes. It shows in this cookbook!
I would choose this one over the first BL Cookbook, although I like both of them. The first cookbook had many turkey recipes and this one is loaded with chicken recipes. Much better for me! There are many salad recipes in the older one that are great. Get both if you can. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-04-04 09:49:25 EST)

As a side note that sounds rather highschoolish for a 50 year old, I was glad that there were less comments and bios of former contestants. It's annoying to see the photos of the show's troublemakers. I've heard many say that they just used a magic marker on those areas. LOL! On the other hand, it was fun to see those who created a positive atmosphere on the show. They put a smile on my face! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-03-30 18:37:23 EST)

I have not bought the book yet. But I was wondering if they tell you the nutritional value of the recipes?

This is a very easy cookbook to use with ingredients that you don't have to spend a ton of money on. I love to get my children involved and they have fun cooking with Mom. The recipes we've tried so far are great in taste and what's even better is they're HEALTHY!

We love this new cookbook. We've already made several of the recipes and there are many more that we can't wait to try. We're some what of a picky family but we were able to find so many recipes that we think we'll really enjoy. This cookbook has given us lots of new options and has given us ideas on how to change some of the dishes we already love to be much healthier. I would recommend this book anyone who's looking for healthier options.

I bought this book in addition to the regular Biggest Loser Cookbook. This one is more thought out. The recipes are in categories as far as breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert just like the other one...but then in this book in each category, the recipes are broken down into food groups...i.e. poultry, beef, seafood...ect. The recipes are good and more importantly they inspire more ideas...I am not a cook, I do not like cooking at all, but the recipes in the book make me want to come up with my own!

It has some good recipes, but many in the book can't really be considered recipes. Adding a wedge of laughing cow cheese to a baked sweet potato isn't really a recipe, it's more of a serving suggestion.
